GROWING STRONGER
TOGETHER 2014 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA OF SNOHOMISH COUNTY
DEAR FRIENDS This past year we asked staff and board members to describe what the Y means to them in six words. While the responses varied, “community” was a common theme. The YMCA truly is a place where everyone is welcome. To bring about meaningful change, we must be focused and intentional. At the Y, we measure our success by how well we engage communities in our three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. That’s because a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors. In 2014 the YMCA had another outstanding year of providing vital human services to the residents of Snohomish County. Our Y advanced a number of strategic initiatives that strengthen both current operations and the longterm vision for expanding our impact in new and existing communities. One way we have achieved this is by offering a “Y without walls” in the Stanwood-Camano community. Working with volunteers and offering programs there since 2012, we have made significant progress toward bringing a facility to Stanwood-Camano thanks to generous donors and a committed team of staff and volunteers. We have purchased property in Stanwood and are on track to break ground summer 2015. We also continue to raise funds to replace the Everett YMCA facility, with plans to acquire property in 2015 and begin construction in 2018. Healthy living programs remain a key focus of your YMCA. Youth obesity, diabetes prevention, and programs for cancer survivors are offered throughout the county. The Y provides active leadership to the Snohomish County Health Leadership Coalition (serving as fiscal sponsor) and supports the Gear Up & Go! program by providing free memberships to all 5th grade students in participating schools. We also continue to facilitate the palliative care education program in our branches to educate the community about end of life decisions. Your YMCA continues to provide significant programming and leadership in diversity, inclusion, and social justice. We developed and implemented additional staff training and are collaborating with a number of other institutions and organizations to advance this work including the NAACP, Edmonds Community College, and Everett Community College, where we conducted a marine science program for MAP participants during the summer. We have also begun the process to become recognized as a Global Center of Excellence (GCE) by YMCA of the USA. Despite a shortfall in budgeted membership revenues the first half of the year, branch and Association staff leadership initiated a number of steps to address the issue to ensure we would end the year in a balanced position. We embraced positive news in the last half of the year as new membership enrollments increased. Through all our ups and downs, we are truly blessed to have such generous and giving boards and donors, amazing volunteers, faithful members, and a strong and dedicated staff which make it possible to do our work.

MISSION IN ACTION: DANCING FOR DIABETES PREVENTION Alex had been morbidly obese for more than 20 years and wore a size 3X. She had tried many weight loss programs, but nothing worked. Knowing she was at risk for diabetes, Alex joined the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. The program gave her the necessary tools and support to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Since it was a gradual change, she never felt overwhelmed or deprived. She felt safe with a supportive community where there was no judgment or pressure. They worked as a class to brainstorm solutions for obstacles and setback. A changed person, Alex has lost 85 pounds and her confidence has grown. She has since become a Zumba® instructor and a belly dancer. “I’m now addicted to dancing! I need exercise every day to help me keep balanced and deal with the stresses of life. The Y is truly my community and I’ve made a lot of friends here.” 7
