YOUR Y STORY
Through your unique and special voice, the Y can share your story to bring people together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. If a story about the Y has meaning for you, and you’re willing to tell it, then we believe it’s worth hearing!
“The Y has given me a safe place to take my children. Before joining I had low self-esteem and never felt I could break from being a mother. Through this I have found myself and my kiddos have become more confident on their own. I love the classes and friends I have made. BEST DECISION EVER!”

“We are a foster family and have found no better facility than the Y to welcome and include our foster kiddos. They come with lots of needs and the Y helps our family care for them through inclusion and lessons. Thank you YMCA staff for caring for those who need it most!”
– South Meridian YMCA Member
“I came to the Y after a stroke. I started with a senior class and got strong enough to go upstairs. Now I don’t need my walker so much. I really like coming to socialize at the Y!” – Caldwell YMCA Member
“I come to the Y almost everyday with my brother. Our mom works till 5 so when we get out of school, we walk here to do our homework and eat our snacks. It is a really fun, welcoming environment here at the Y.” –Downtown Boise YMCA Youth Member
“I cannot say enough about Daphne and Daisy who do the Delay the Disease and Rock Steady Boxing classes. We know that they had to go and get special training to do this. It made such a difference for the participants! It gives them hope and camaraderie with others who have to live with Parkinson’s. It gives them a reason to get up every day. This disease is hard! As a spouse and caregiver I am so very grateful. My Silver Sneakers class with Debbie is wonderful too! It helps me stay physically fit so I can do the things my husband can’t do anymore. Again, I give thanks to the Y. It really helps with our quality of life!” – Caldwell YMCA Member
“I’ve never been someone who goes to the gym but when we moved in I found out the Y had child care, I began coming and walking on the treadmill while my kids were in Kid Zone. Eventually I got brave and attended Group Fitness classes. I immediatley fell in love with the Y and the amazing staff. I became certified to teach HIIT Fitness and now I am a Y employee teaching group fitness classes.”

CHILD DEVELOPMENT Where learning and fun come together
At the Y, we believe every child is of promise and deserves the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. YMCA Child Care Programs are committed to supporting all children in their ongoing growth to help them become independent, self-confident learners. We provide a safe environment that provides opportunities for children to improve skills, build healthy relationships, be physically active, and develop good habits and attitudes, particularly a positive sense of themselves, which will make a positive difference throughout their lives. At the Y we believe that use of space, furnishings, materials, the daily schedule, and how adults communicate and interact with children are all important components that influence their environment, learning, interactions, and relationships. A positive, developmentally appropriate environment for children is important in YMCA Child Care Centers. We intentionally prepare every environment to help support the development of each child at the Y.
Social Emotional Focus All of our YMCA Child Care Programs focus on developing children’s social-emotional development. Research shows that programs where children feel safe, connected to others, and loved leads to an improvement in cognitive function. We use the work from the Center on the Social Emotional Foundations and focus on three areas: building positive relationships, designing supportive environments, and implementing social-emotional teaching strategies. YMCA teachers work with children using strategies that support his/her ability to recognize emotions, set and achieve goals, show care and concern for others, create positive relationships, handle interpersonal relationships, and make positive decisions.
ABOUT Y STAFF
In addition to being licensed Child Care Professionals* and trained in CPR and First Aid, our teachers practice the Y’s four character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in everything they do. They also undergo over 35 hours of special training on child abuse prevention and developmentally appropriate curriculum. *A Child Care License is issued by the City of Boise and the State of Idaho. The process includes an FBI fingerprint and background check.

SCHOOL AGE (GRADES K-8) BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE YMCA School-Age programs offer part-time and full-time child care for children in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Activities align our schoolage programming with evidence-based lesson plans while remaining flexible to foster each child’s cognitive, socialemotional and physical development by sparking an interest in learning through hands-on projects. Each day children will be engaged through a wide variety of activities including physical activity, STEM, arts & crafts, FUN, and homework help. YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT
YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT C D W
The Idaho YMCA Youth in Government is an in-depth educational program that teaches high school students how to be active citizens through a nine-month, interactive experience where they directly participate in the processes of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Idaho State Government. In a state as geographically, economically, and politically diverse as Idaho, we believe that it is our responsibility to teach our future leaders the importance of effectively participating in governing our state. Teens will actively engage in the legislative and judicial processes of government through lobbying, bill writing, competing in mock court cases, and culminating their entire efforts through a mock State Session at Idaho’s Capitol. Youth in Government offers the opportunity for young people to: •
Research national and international concerns
•
Organize this information into a document proposal
•
Engage in intensive discussion
•
Debate these proposals with peers from other states

THE VALUE OF EXPERIENCE At the 2019 Heritage Dinner we were honored to hear Phil Reberger’s Y Story. Once upon a time, many, many years ago—it was 1960—a skinny senior at Caldwell High School was encouraged by his American Government teacher, Mr. Shurliff, to sign up for the YMCA Youth Legislature program. Done. So, one Saturday morning, along with a couple of classmates, I drove to Marsing High School for a district conference preceding the state YMCA Youth Legislature meeting at the state capitol in Boise. At this district meeting in Marsing the state officers for the state session were elected. My classmates nominated me for Youth Governor and, following a vigorous election campaign over lunch hour, I was elected Youth Governor over the hometown candidate from Marsing. This was my introduction to the YMCA. I went on to Boise in the spring to serve as Youth Governor, where I gave a State of the State address to the joint session of the legislature, signed bills, vetoed bills, delivered policy messages to the legislature, held a news conference, and was invited to meet with Governor Smylie and sat at his desk. The governor presented me with a set of Idaho state seal cuff links that I still wear. What was the value of that incredible experience to a senior high kid from Canyon County? PRICELESS! Phil Reberger Partner, Sullivan & Reberger Through your unique and special voice, the Y can share your story to bring people together to invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors. If a story about the Y has meaning for you, and you’re willing to tell it, then we believe it’s worth hearing! Submit your story online at ymcatvidaho.org/cause. By submitting My Y Story, I give the YMCA permission to share and publish my story online or in promotional materials.
