Jazz events to celebrate music award Aberdeenshire Council has received an Outstanding Commitment to Jazz Education Award from the National Music Council and UK Jazz Services, for the second year running. To celebrate the occasion a special series of events called Jazz in June, which looks to give people the chance to enjoy a taste of jazz music, will be held in Aberdeenshire. The Will Michael Diploma was awarded in recognition of the Aberdeenshire Jazz Programme, which is aimed at both primary and secondary school pupils and has now been running for four years. It is named after the late jazz musician and educator Will Michael, brother of Aberdeenshire Council’s Jazz Programme tutor Richard Michael, who will give a solo performance as part of the Jazz in June programme. The series will kick off with an open mic session on Tuesday, June 12, at 7pm in the Hopeville Social Club, Inverurie. Anyone who would like to play a piece backed by the professional rhythm section featuring Richard Michael, Bill Kemp and Kenny Irons can either book a slot or simply come along on the night. Those who would just like watch the session are equally welcome. The following evening (Wed, June 13), a special concert arranged in partnership between Aberdeenshire Council’s instrumental music service and the Aberdeenshire Youth Music Forum will take place at 7pm in Inverurie Town Hall. It will feature Will Michael’s brother Richard on piano, Inverurie Academy’s Gospel Choir, Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra, Aberdeenshire Jazz Ensemble, South Aberdeenshire Music Centre Big Band, saxophonist Richard Ingram, The Cast, Strathdon Primary Guitar project and Chalumeau projects from Methlick and New Deer Primary Schools. Many of these projects have been funded by Creative Scotland via Aberdeenshire’s Youth Music Initiative programme. The following week several primary schools in Aberdeenshire will be visited by the Scottish Saxophone Ensemble, while the Aberdeenshire Jazz Programme will also be visiting schools throughout June. On Thursday, July 12, the Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra will be performing at the World Saxophone Congress, which is to be held in St Andrews this year.
