While it has been a while since we have had one of our own tech editor, Will Ramsey's, bikes in the magazine, it's not for a lack of incredible work coming out of his shop. Will has been an LQVSLUDWLRQ LQ UHĂ€QLQJ WKH GHWDLOV of what we do in the custom motorcycle culture and this latest build is no exception from that. Its name is "Against All Odds" and it is easy enough to make the correlation that Will does not settle for a standard approach to his craft.

aybe it’s just because I came from a depressed community or that I am from the in-between generation, but as I look around the world today , FDQ¡W KHOS EXW EH P\VWLÀHG E\ WKH general consensus that everyone is owed something. I thought there for a minute that the storms in Texas and Florida were going to unite us under a much more grateful banner but as soon as the dust settled, it was nothing but people blaming the state and federal government for not providing them with more security, more warning, more‌‌ I have friends that have lost everything in the two storms and my heart goes out to them and of course we are helping in every instance we can‌ I can’t stand the rhetoric from people who just sit on their butts and bitch that someone owes them something. Here’s a little reality check for you, sweetcheeks, no one, and I mean not even your dear old mom owes you a damn thing in this life. If you have been one of these spoiled little ass hats from the Millennial generation who has been afforded a life of PlayStation and microwave tater tots every day and haven’t been given an ounce of personal responsibility until now, too bad. Get a helmet, get a job, pull your pants up or let the legs out and get on with your life. That bullshit was something your parents did to keep

you from having it hard like they did. Unfortunately, at the same time they started a trend that currently erodes the self-respect can do attitude that built this country. This all came to the surface recently when I started to hear a few of the younger generation in this crowd bitch about how hard life in this industry is‌. Now wait a minute, I know I’m not one of the OGs but I’ve been on both sides of this young and old argument. And the least I can say is that when the industry gave us the blues we just did our own thing. The last thing we wanted was to go on VRFLDO PHGLD DQG WU\ DQG ´,Qà XHQFH¾ crowds of people into carrying our cause. We did what people in the United States have done since the ÀUVW LPPLJUDQWV LQFOXGLQJ P\ RZQ grandfather, came here and found out that not everyone was thrilled they had arrived. They went to work and found a way to get it done. All this was for one reason and it WAS NOT because there was a rainbow pointing us to a pot of gold, but because this is how we live and what we love about life, and that’s enough. There are people right now living lives that are far harder than anything you could imagine, trust me. There are people who would love even half the opportunities that you might have: just remember that the next time you throw your little pitty-party. On the other hand, there are examples of the good of the human
condition all around. Through these hard times we have seen plenty of people helping each other. This is especially a good thing when it’s done for those who will roll up their sleeves and put in the work. A good friend of the magazine and the industry who I will leave anonymous recently lost his whole shop in the wake of these storms. As he went about the task of sifting through his life’s work, the rest of the industry began to send him what he needed: Not money, not prayers but tools and supplies to get back to work. He’s the kind of man, you see, who can lose everything and work his way back out of it if given the chance. For that chance, I’d like to publicly thank Spectro Oils, Bikers Choice, Lucas Oil, Bob Kay, Dar Holdsworth, Chopper Charlie, BKC Paul, Darren McKeag and Harbor Freight Tools. All of whom went into action to make sure this cat had the chance to work his way out and I’m proud to know them all. So, think about this, especially if this little rant pissed you off‌. Are you willing to put your head down and do the work, even when it’s hard, ever without the fame and glory? Are you willing to set an example for the ´)ROORZHUV¾ \RX PD\ KDYH VR WKDW when push comes to shove you can work your way out? If so, then call me anytime the shit hits the fan and ,¡OO EH WKH ÀUVW SHUVRQ WR OHQG \RX D hand. But brother‌ if you want to complain to someone about how hard life in the motorcycle business is I might be the last person you want to mention that to‌ Damn right it’s hard and I hope to God it stays that way so only the few, those with guts and determination even dare to make their way in it. Now go do something, we’re all way behind and there’s shit to do!

had an old timer once tell me that your Ă€UVW WULS WR 6WXUJLV LV DOZD\V \RXU EHVW and most memorable. If I ever meet that old man again I will call him a liar to his face. Now, don’t get me wrong, my Ă€UVW WULS WR 6WXUJLV Ă€YH \HDUV DJR ZDV absolutely life-changing. I rode out with Darren McKeag, Roadside Marty and a band of others and was introduced to so many lifelong friends. But each year I go to Sturgis I have the best experience of my life. On the trip home I have a bit of sadness because I think that I will never have as much fun as I did that year, and that same feeling overcomes me for a bit the following year on the trip to Sturgis. Every year, I think that there is absolutely no possible way I can top the year before, the memories made, the new friends, the reconnecting with old friends, and all the wild stories that are created, yet somehow, someway, every year my Sturgis experience continues to get better and better. The easiest way I can quickly describe Sturgis 2017 for me is it was the “Best 10 GD\V RI P\ OLIHÂľ The weeks leading up WR 6WXUJLV ZHUH Ă€OOHG ZLWK a high amount of stress and an extremely low amount of sleep. show. As luck would have it, I was extremely behind schedule and the last two weeks before Sturgis I basically slept an hour or two every night, with a couple all-nighters mixed in. I showed up to Sturgis late Friday night to deliver the bike to the show and I think both Michael Lichter and myself breathed a sigh of
relief when the bike rolled in, as I believe I was the last builder to deliver. Now that WKH ELNH ZDV ÀQLVKHG DQG RQ GLVSOD\ D huge weight was lifted off my shoulders and I could enjoy Sturgis. Sunday morning brought the Flying Pistons Builders Breakfast at the Buffalo Chip. This was a great event that brought the invited builders together to

I was excited to meet the other builders, we had been following each other’s builds through social media VR Ă€QDOO\ PHHWLQJ HDFK other and sharing stories was a great experience. Sunday afternoon was WKH ´0RWRUF\FOHV $V $UWÂľ Industry Party. All of the big names in the industry came to the party to see what each of the builders had created. I had been to this party in the past and knew how packed and crazy it would be, and this year was no different. I even heard there were more people at this year’s party than previous. All of the builders had to get on stage and talk a little bit about their motorcycle. I think a large majority of the builders, myself included, were pretty nervous to be given the microphone. The party was a whirlwind, talking and meeting with so many people. A couple highlights were meeting both Willie G Davidson and Arlen Ness and showing them my build. After the Industry Party was the Pro Flat Track TT Races at the Buffalo Chip, right in the middle of the amphitheater...the main stage at the Chip! This was such a cool race, the TT 5DFHV LQFOXGHG D IHZ MXPSV LQ WKH Ă DW track course, one of which sent the large V-twin race bikes pretty high in the air with the occasional sketchy landing. You almost have to see it to believe it. I was appointed to be a judge in the chopper show and my choice was pretty easy. I selected Christian Newman’s Sportster chopper that he rode from Buffalo, NY. It was a pretty trick machine with a ton of custom, hand-crafted parts. Monday evening was the Cycle Source 20th Anniversary Party at the Broken Spoke Saloon. It was great to see all the familiar faces and congratulations to Chris and Heather for reaching this milestone with the magazine. Tuesday morning was the Adian’s Ride through the Black Hills. A great group of people showed up to support Bobby and Elisa Seeger and the Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation. The weather was a little cooler but it was just about perfect riding conditions. One of my favorite things in life is riding on some killer roads right next to my friends. I lucked out and ended up riding next to my buddy Randy from St Louis. Hitting the twisties with him lined up right by my side, both bikes and riders in synch is always a great feeling. We stopped in Rapid City for some gourmet grub, leave it to Bobby Seeger to have the intel on the best food place to stop at. On the ride back to Sturgis I had the pleasure to cruise next to Bobby who was riding a brand new Indian Larry motorcycle. At one point, I looked over and Bobby had to be only a few inches away from my handlebars. We blasted down the interstate leading the rest of the pack. Halfway back to Sturgis it was decided to take a shortcut back to the Buffalo Chip which turned into a dirt road, and then it started to rain, which created a mud road, a perfect place to test out the super aggressive Metzler Sahara tires I run. Once we got back to the Chip, everyone’s bikes were covered in mud and looking just about par for the course, in my opinion. We arrived at the Chip just in time for the Sportster Showdown. Another one of my favorite bike shows at Sturgis, always bringing out tons of sweet custom quad-cam machines and the weirdos who willingly choose to build and ride them. It was a great party, including the Red Bull monster truck, complete with the mobile '- ERRWK DQG GDQFH Ă RRU , PD\ KDYH HYHQ felt the need to show off and perform some stunts to impress the crowd by climbing on top of the bridge and performing some Olympic-quality high dives into the pond. I was in such a daze I just stumbled off the track, leaving the bike where it was. Thanks to my homeboy Beasley for getting the bike upright and pushing it off the track. Once I started to process what had just happened I started to check my extremities and miraculously my elbows, shoulders, knees and ankles survived the crash but I did have some nasty road rash on my backside and a pretty sharp pain in the upper back, but nothing a few pain killers and cocktails couldn’t solve for the rest of the week. After the races was the much-anticipated Ozzy concert, and a big thanks to a good friend for hooking me up with front row passes. One extremely cool setup that was going on all week was the Grease and Gears Garage at the Broken Spoke were a real shop was setup on stage with all sorts of builders were invited on stage to do livedemonstrations of their craft. Thursday featured Will Ramsey of Faith Forgotten Choppers. Will went through all the steps of building a custom chopper frame, all while answering questions from the audience. It is always rad to watch these masters of their craft work in person. Friday was the annual trip to Deadwood with the Led Sled Crew to hit up the steak and seafood buffet at the casino. After all of us had stuffed ourselves with crab legs and lobster tails it was time to party. We bounced from bar to bar, partying and dancing and laughing until the bouncers ´SROLWHO\Âľ DVNHG XV WR OHDYH :H SLOHG EDFN into the infamous Led Sled Winnebago and headed back to the Chip to continue the festivities until sunrise. At one point, we went on a long adventure in the golf cart chasing a dinosaur riding wheelies on a PLQL ELNH WKDW HQGHG ZLWK OLJKWLQJ D Ă€UH at bikini beach and getting the authorities involved. Saturday was the last day of the rally and I made sure to head to the HarleyDavidson footprint in Sturgis and catch the Ives Brothers Wall of Death show. Hope he doesn’t mind the new scrapes on the pegs, it was just too fun of a bike to not push the limits. Saturday evening was the Insane Clown Posse concert at the Iron Horse Saloon. If you haven’t heard of ICP, they are a rap group, who dress like clowns and spray cheap soda and chicken feathers all over the crowd. I knew this ahead of time and hid under a beer tent during the concert but it was quite the wild, weird, insane, and hilarious spectacle. A perfect way to end the Sturgis Rally. Unfortunately, due to word count restrictions, time constraints, and censorship, along with protecting the reputation of many of my friends, along with myself, I am not able to include many other stories from the week, but I’ll let you use your imagination, or just stop me the next time you see me, and I can divulge some more untold stories from Sturgis 2017. In recap, this year’s Sturgis experience far surpassed all expectations and was, without a doubt, the best 10 days of my life and I have absolutely no idea how I can top it next year‌but I know I will.

You see, the story of the Old Man’s life wasn’t one that has great tales of heroic deeds, all though there were plenty of times he saved my life. There aren’t recounts of great acts of charity, although
none of us ever went hungry. He was the sum total of a good and hardworking man. He kept his word, provided for his family and even made sure we all learned something along the way. Like putting

Sure, the rigors of it all left him angry from time to time, or took so much out of him that he’d pass out in his chair, big wad of Copenhagen drooling down his chin into his beard. But I doubt if he could have changed anything about it he would have. In his life, he had a good woman he loved until the day he died, had beautiful children that all managed to grow up right and make lives for themselves. He had great brothers around him who knew they could always count on the old man and vice versa. for solo or passenger, loaded or not loaded, highway riding or back road twisty, it’s all done by hand. Trust me, I played with those adjustments also. Let’s talk a little on rebound. REVO Shocks have an external knob with 6 adjustments to set for rebound DOORZLQJ IRU VRPH Ă€QH WXQLQJ 7KLV works is by turning the knob, it will open or close a passage that will FRQWURO WKH RLO Ă RZ thru a passage at the base of the shock. Smaller the passage, the slower oil can push through, which in turn, slows the rebound. The larger the passage the faster oil passes through which causes a faster rebound. Let me tell you, it works great! Once DJDLQ WKH EHQHĂ€W here is being able to adjust for weight, and riding style. Their dampening system uses a unique design that’s integrated into the adjuster knob itself, unlike others in the industry, so it is actually part RI WKH GDPSHQLQJ Ă XLG PDQDJHPHQW DORQJ ZLWK GHĂ HFWLYH GLVF GDPSHQLQJ
The install instructions on these are pretty simple and straight forward as with most shocks. The biggest thing to watch for is alignment from top to bottom. You want this as straight as possible. Legend uses spherical bearings in both the top and bottom mount to ease installation. Setting up the sag is pretty simple also. Sag LV GHÀQHG DV follows; free sag is the measurement when the bike is unloaded and shocks are fully extended. Rider sag is measured when the bike is loaded with the rider or riders and gear. Sag is the difference b e t w e e n those two measurements. With that being said, here’s an example of a good starting point. A REVO 13’ shock sag starting point is 0.75. I measured from the top of my swing arm to the top shock bolt with no weight, then again from the same points with me sitting on her. I then adjusted the springs by hand to get where I wanted the sag to be. Tighten the spring for less sag, loosen for more. Next is rebound dampening. Rebound dampening controls the speed at which the shock extends after being compressed. Too much dampening here can cause the wheel to jump on bumps instead of following the surface. Not enough can cause it to top out to fast. This is adjusted with the rebound knob. Setting 1 provides the least amount
of dampening, softens the shock, this allows the shock to fully extend the fastest. Setting 3 is in the middle and 6 allows the shock to rebound to fully extend the slowest, stiffens the shock. It is recommended to start at position 3 and try changing from there. Like I said earlier, all this adjusting is done by hand and can be done on the road. I got my shocks on and have put
10,000 miles on them since I got them in May of this year. I am really impressed with the overall ride of them and got to play with the adjustments. I’ve road all over Georgia, and Florida and they felt great. But I really wanted to try them back in my home state of Pa, which I had the chance to ride back to a couple times already. I headed back up to the mountains of my home state where I knew some great twisty and bumpy roads are and I was really happy with the ride! The biggest test also was my wife riding with me. I asked her how the ride was back there and her response was “Great” she said she feels a big difference between the old shocks to these. That my friends, is the ultimate test right there. Like the say “Happy wife, happy life” isn’t that right Chris? LOL! The REVO-A comes in 12’ and 13’, standard or heavyduty applications. Heavy duty is recommended for 500lb plus rider and passenger weight. The Legend suspension parts are handmade in Sturgis, SD and backed by a lifetime warranty. It’s great to see a product made in the U.S.A. that supports its local community with jobs and makes a quality part. I’m looking forward to updating the front end next with their AXEO front end suspension kit. It’s going to be killer! Thank you, Jesse, and your team for your help. Aaron is amazing and I can’t believe how lucky we were to get this for the G&G library. So, all of the action went to Facebook

Live and if you didn’t happen to catch it as it was going down you can check it out anytime on the CS Facebook page. Since we were full time on that property it afforded us the ability to be part of some of the most legendary happenings in Sturgis. One to
mention is the Denver’s Choppers 50th Anniversary Chopper show put on by Mondo and the boys. The bikes were just as you would expect, outta this world. The crowd was like a seventies biker movie and the joint was packed. It was humbling to watch at the end of the day when Mondo
gave out the awards and talked about Denver Mullins and the anniversary of his shop. Thank you for having us be part of it man, and especially for the trophy my little Board Tracker got! Tuesday was AMCA Day at the Iron Horse. The fellows from the Antique Motorcycle Club Of America roll out in force and wrapped vintage iron all the way around the Spoke and halfway through the Horse. Being the local chapter president, Carl Olsen served as our master of ceremonies and handed out awards for several achievements, all based on the old time bike run rituals. It was so great to see this happen for the second year now. You see, unlike other events, the AMCA really didn’t have a designated meet during the Sturgis Rally and having the Iron Horse open the doors to the place and provide a little hospitality for club members was world class. Thank you all, these guys deserve a little rock star treatment, they keep the soul of this thing alive. The picture above reminds me that the best part was day after day, no
matter what else was going on with Grease & Gears or any event there, the people who stopped by made the day. The Broken Spoke part of this venue has really recreated the special part of the property where the Spoke used to stand. That was always a place where a guy could get in out of the UDW UDFH RI 6WXUJLV DQG Ă€QG VRPH OLNH minded cats to kick back with. Seeing good friends and rally standards like Brother Speed, well that makes all the difference in the quality of the time spent. Our bike show was on Thursday and it was a real pleasure to pass along the Paughco Rolling Chassis and the hand made trophy that was sculpted by Keith Ball to Anthony Marinaro for his backward Shovel. This thing was just too amazing a feat of engineering to not give the nod to. We are doing a full feature on this bike LQ DQ XSFRPLQJ LVVXH DQG , FDQ¡W ZDLW to hear what this guy went through to make all of this work. Of course, we gave out a ton of other trophies and prizes from companies like Twin Power, Lowbrow, Black Brand, DK Customs, Metzeler, Led Sled, Biltwell, 1DVK ,DFRQD 3DQGHPRQLXP 0LVĂ€W Industries, Hot Leathers, JP Cycles and Bikernet.com. at the Iron Horse we did manage to break away for a few events at other properties, Brad covered most of them in the lead article but I wanted to say thank you to Woody and his staff for the special award they gave me. It means a lot coming from a man who built a city in the middle of farm country and has made it into ZKDW LW LV WRGD\ ,¡P VXUH KH NQRZV what Moxie is himself. The Horse show at the Full Throttle gave us a nice break for a minute and there, we got to see the Sons Of Speed track up close and in person. became an engineer. During that time, Rob became involved in Civil War Re-enactments. His great grandfather had fought in the cavalry and Gibson was always drawn to that time period. He loved the pageantry of that time and was fascinated by the images that came from it. This was where Rob got his start in a lifetimes pursuit in an art form; Collodion Photography through metal or glass plates. As a child, Rob would spend hours going through history books with a magnifying glass, studying each sepia toned photograph. on Kniser, the builder of old Betsy here, comes across as a lifetime New Yorker, although 35 years ago he was transplanted from Collinsville, Illinois. He moved to the big city for a job with great pay and as a lifetime mechanic, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse. Back in his younger days it was farm country living that gave him his mechanical ability. His Pop owned a farm and as was common back then, all the kids and grandkids picked a job. When it came to Ron, his Pop had all this farm machinery and told 5RQ KH KDG EHWWHU OHDUQ KRZ WR Ă€[

over time, this was how most of us from the blue color persuasion did customs; a little at a time and all of it from the sweat of our brow. Betsy is beyond clean and a perfect H[DPSOH RI D SURSHU VKRYHO 2I everything on it, his favorite part was the upside-down Ace Of Spades by the kicker. There was a hole that needed covered and he went to work with some stainless to come up with a trick cover for it. In the end, Ronnie completed the bike and scored one of his life long goals in winning the Rats Hole Show in 2010 with her. I asked him why Betsy, and he said ‘cause she was
big and fat and ugly, but always a good woman and never left him stranded. He had her for a good long time and then handed it down to his son. they added an entire event at the Costa Mesa Speedway on Thursday Night, to kick off the weekend, they decided to host WKH ÀUVW DQQXDO %RUQ )UHH Stampede. The stands were full, the band was rockin and the EHHU ZDV ÁRZLQ :DWFKLQJ WKH racers, that were out there on every level, and for every reason imaginable, take those left turns like their lives depended on it... made for an amazing opener! The popular Hooligans racing team comprised of madmen such as Suicide Machine Co. and Rusty Butcher were out there tearing up the track, along with others lucky enough to do that infamous quarter mile dirt track. I still think the star of the show, as always, was Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell. He rips up that dirt better than most guys half his age. All I have to say is...that bastard has balls. The builders brought their bikes out to the Stampede for a sneak peak of course, since historically Thursday is the opening Builder Release Party. Up until this year, however, it has been a private event that was attended via invitation only. This year the guys decided that anyone and everyone willing to drag their asses out on a Thursday night should be free to get a glimpse of these gorgeous machines. As if adding the Stampede wasn’t enough Grant, Mike and Chris decided that Born Free spectators needed just a little more. On the grounds, they added a vert ramp hosted by Vans and Joker Machine Shop. Not just any vert ramp, but this one was the biggest competition Vert ramp back in 2001, shipped in all the way from Virginia Beach! On the ramp there were professionals, amateurs, men, women, kids! Moving on... the invited builders this year, some new, some returning, put some serious effort into their motorcycles. JP Rodman had his ever-present trike there of course. Bigger and better than last year, but then again blue is my favorite color, so I may be partial to this year’s build. The skill and creativity astounds me every year. Classic builds, modern technology, all put together on bikes I could only be lucky enough to ride someday. There was even a bike built to completely replicate an old “Revel” model kit for a “Harley Chopper”. I asked my friend David Freston (@chopperdaves), or as we all know him, Chopper Dave to give me a little insight from the builder and vendor side of the event. Dave was the builder for one of the giveaway bikes for Born-Free 8, and was at BF9 as an invited builder. Dave came back with “Born Free is a roller coaster. It has become THE deadline for so many builders and riders. Either building for the show itself, or building to ride to the show. I’ve built three bikes I’m super stoked on because of Born Free, it has also gotten PH EDFN LQWR UDFLQJ YLQWDJH ÁDW track. Turns out it’s the main show I vend at these days. More people come to BF than any other show it seems. It’s not just the bikes, it’s not just the builders, it’s the people that go. If it wasn’t for all of the friends and family that support us vendors and builders, and Born-Free itself, we wouldn’t have this show at all. No one would be lucky enough to see all of the amazing things these talented artists and builders bring to the table. This year, in my opinion, was the pinnacle for Born Free. The level of building has surpassed anything anyone could have imagined ten years ago. Martin Calgren built his bike “Insomnia”, the “be all-end all” Born-Free build. It raises the bar so high that it is going to be hard to surpass. This coming year will be the 10th one. I can’t even imagine what will be brought to the table. I cannot imagine what some of these builders will come up with

here’s all kinds of people in this world, categorized in a thousand different ways. But when it all comes down to it you have the loud ones and the quiet ones. You tend to take one at face value and the other, well, you never really know what they have up their sleeve. There are all kinds, but it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for. Bret Hatt is no stranger to the business side of a wrench, he’s been collecting vintage parts for IRUW\ RQH \HDUV +LV ÀUVW ELNH was a ‘46 Knuckle Shovel in a single down tube frame wearing a Sportster tank and a narrow glide front end. That bike was the beginning of it all and as most stories of this nature begin, it was sold off to get his shop going in 1987. Since 87 the shop has taken many forms and a few moves, but it’s always been Bret building bikes and collecting vintage gold. His collection got SUHWW\ H[WHQVLYH DV KH PDGH his mark and bought out inventory of seven other failing shops, focusing his attention on Knuckleheads, Pans, and Shovels. Somewhere around 1998 he caught wind of a screaming deal on a ‘44 Knucklehead cradled in a less then desirable frame with a weld on hardtail and other thrown together odds and ends including a wide glide front end… all for the lump sum of a slim $3500. The bottom end was attended to and rebuilt. Soon after, the motor was tossed on a shelf as the rest of the bike was stripped of it’s worth and liquidated. In my usual routine of working three eastern rallies to gain money for the summer’s travels, I gazed across the huge grass lot of Frank Brown Park to the colorful vendor tents that littered this place. The show was almost over. From across he lot a strange looking cat decorated with face metal walked slowly my way. I knew this guy only as acquaintance, for he worked vendors just as I. Upon arrival, we talked for quite some time. It became apparent that Scorpio suffered from a bad case of wanderlust. On this we agreed. :LWK WKH UDOO\ DOPRVW ÀQLVKHG we were both scheduled to work Myrtle Beach in South Carolina some 600 miles away. There’d be a week’s free-time between. girl would like to make the trip with me. Sounded like an adventure. I said, “I’d love to go with you guys, but it’s a 600-mile ride and I won’t be doing it in a day. I’ll be taking back roads across G e o r g i a , camping at roadside, and it’s going to take at least two nights. If you’re good with that then let’s do it.” Scorpio talked no more on the subject. I’d later learn that this relaxed manner of travel was a new concept for him. To date, his highspeed runs
had been made mostly along the interstates of high mileage days in effort to make the next rally/ job, return home, or some other destination. His motorcycle is
more of a sport-bike and had no saddlebags, nor did he and Lulu own camping equipment; for their boss generally provided lodging in his RV. Scorpio immediately purchased a set of leather saddlebags from another vendor, then made a trip to Walmart for camping gear. Upon return they unwrapped the new tent, sleeping bags, etc., stuffed the packaging in the boss’s truck, and kept the receipts. Upon arrival in Myrtle the cheap bastard would simply return the gear for refund— so he thought. I knew nothing of this. Unbeknownst to me as well, Scorpio’s Facebook posts began. Here’s WKH ÀUVW *HWWLQJ ready to ride out with famous gypsy biker Scooter Tramp Scotty to learn how to live on the road while heading to my next gig in myrtle Beach. The rally ended. Upon arrival at the new location I threw camp quickly together while my companions worked with the
new equipment. As would become our habit, Scorpio and I sat on a tarp laid before my tent and talked into the night. Both he and Lulu’s excitement was refreshing and it brought memories of my early days out here. Morning went as planned. The company was good and it was 11am when both bikes were again ready. I said to Scorpio, “Now you know all that, ‘We’re gonna make good time! We’re gonna burn up the road! We’re gonna ride, ride, ride!’ stuff you hear so often? For this
one ride we’re going to set all that aside and concentrate on only one WKLQJ +RZ FDQ ZH JHW WKH DEVROXWH most pleasure from this journey.” All who’ve made extended trips know the discomfort of deep road weariness. For this trip, using 100 proven tricks, I’d seek to minimize that condition while also hoping to elevate those pleasant parts to
their highest potential. The road led north into Alabama. As little towns came and went, and with our numerous stops, I couldn’t help but notice Scorpio and Lulu’s delighted enthusiasm. Very refreshing. Lulu was particularly taken with one courthouse so we paused to get photos. They’d spelled the name, WILCOX COVNTY COVRT HOVSE. All laughed at that one. As is a pastime of mine, we also entered an old abandoned house. This was a new mystery and it brought the child-like fun of exploration. Inside, among the deserted objects that once served a family, we also found a baby buzzard who hissed and tried to hide. It was late afternoon when we met with Michelle. It seemed of fond interest for Lulu to meet such an unusual chick. Again, leaving our companions at a country store, Michelle and I separated in search of tonight’s camp. She found it. Once the girls had gone to bed Scorpio and I again sat on my tarp and talked till after midnight. I was treated to a to some deep body-work. Having placed this camp near a river, we took turns going for a bath. All clean and refreshed, bikes were again made ready and we took to the roads. By afternoon the air cooled as clouds rolled in and a summer shower trapped us in a gas station for an hour. From there the day moved forward in a bright collage of sights and small adventure as friendships tightened and camaraderie seemed the order of this day. perspective on life. It’s amazing to see how much we burden ourselves with things we WANT and “think we needâ€? that we end up creating a life in which we do nothing but work to want and want more causing us to have to work more to in turn afford more things we want. All that ends up causing us so much stress that we end up not enjoying ourselves and have no time to truly relax and have peace. Meeting Scotty and Miki and seeing how simple they live but how peaceful they both are is a real eye opener. Today went the same. Book Of The Week Club- The HarleyDavidson Book- This book—concept and design by Michael KĂśckritz, editor-in-chief of ramp magazine— is about the power and beauty of
the engines and the elegance and strength of these machines from Lake Michigan. ,W LV DQ KRPDJH WR WKH Ă DWKHDGV Knuckleheads, Panheads, Ironheads, the Shovels and Evolutions. Gliding on the roads with such an inspired feeling that will surely carry from today into the future, The HarleyDavidson Book is a visual journey through a tradition deeply rooted in the spirit of freedom of the USA. What would Easy Rider be without its iconic heroes, “Billy Bikeâ€? and “Captain America,â€? the most famous motorcycles in the world? This freewheeling attitude is conveyed in opulent, photo-rich stories and articles about the unique HarleyDavidson lifestyle. The authors are all passionate bikers who have been under the powerful twins’ spell since childhood. R.I.P: Lonnie James Isam, Jr - The world of antique motorcycling mourns the loss of one of their most beloved and respected personalities. With his parents by his side, Lonnie Isam, Jr. quietly lost his long and hard-fought battle with cancer on August 20, 2017 at his home in Sturgis, South Dakota. Born May 7, 1969 in Edmonds, Washington and raised as the only child of Lonnie Sr. and Marianne Isam, Lonnie grew up surrounded by antique machinery and was well versed in all things motorcycle at an early age. As a teenager, he spent weekends scouring garage sales and swap meets with his best friend, then reselling their treasures to make spending money well before eBay, American Pickers or What’s in the Barn was ever thought of. As a young man he traveled to Europe, worked with his father as a motorcycle wrangler on the movie set RI 2OLYHU 6WRQH¡V FRQVSLUDF\ Ă€OP -). and immersed himself in learning all he could about motorcycling’s past.
THE CYCLE SOURCE WORLD REPORT - POWERED BY BIKERNET.COM
Respected as a leading authority on motorcycle history and restoration, Lonnie eventually opened his own motorcycle shop called Jurassic Racing in Sturgis, South Dakota, but it is the Motorcycle Cannonball Run that he will always be remembered for. Known around the globe as the IRXQGHU RI WKH PRVW GLIĂ€FXOW DQWLTXH motorcycle endurance ride in the world, Lonnie started the famous Cannonball Run back in 2010, forever changing the landscape of antique motorcycling by encouraging owners to make their ancient machines roadworthy and hit the blacktop with fellow enthusiasts. His original quest to just share a ride along America’s back roads with friends catapulted the wrenching visionary into the public eye as he managed to lead a different international group of adventurous riders in an epic excursion across the country three more times after the inaugural run. Participants have declared the runs as “life changing.â€? And while Lonnie Jr. was always happiest when sharing a lane with his friends, his role of promoter launched the quiet gear head into a spotlight he was ill prepared for. He eschewed the limelight and shunned publicity. As far as he was concerned, the old bikes deserved to live out their lives as they were intended, being ridden, and that was all that was important. Lonnie Isam Jr. will forever be a part of motorcycling’s glorious history. His birth mother, Joanne Marie Isam, preceded Lonnie Jr. in death. As per his request, there will be no services. Instead, it is suggested you take a ride through the country and recall a man who lived his life for his many friends and the sincere love of antique motorcycles. --Felicia Morgan

I think this theory was born when RU PRUH \HDUV DJR ZKHQ + ' case bore limitations (couldn’t bore out much due to the case bolt pattern and no big bore case options available at the time) dictated “stroking it, and using longer rods to make more power, which did happen. So, guys thought, “I stroked it and my torque went up, but in reality, the cubic inch increase created the additional power. In addition, heads were not really designed to make big HP like some are today so the HP may
have gone up a little (as well as guys keeping the same smaller cam and smaller diameter pipe in the motor when they stroked it), but the torque really went up. For example, I have owned a few GLIIHUHQW ORQJHU VWURNHUV LQFKHV from S&S that in stock or mildly PRGLÀHG IRUP PDGH DERXW IW lbs. or so of torque. My current 126inch, which I ran for years as a stock crate motor, before being upgraded a couple years ago, in its current form, made 150 ft. lbs. with mild 10.5 compression. Guys who haven’t tested the bigger bore stuff simply couldn’t believe it. So, apples to apples, a shorter SURÀOH FDP ZLWK PDWFKLQJ VPDOOHU diameter pipe and other factors), will make more torque earlier but fade away earlier than a big cam, big pipe motor which come in later and will stay stronger later (provided the heads are good enough to make that power up top). +RZHYHU LQ D PRGLÀHG ELJ ERUH short stroke motor such as mine, with pro level heads, a cam that is correctly designed for the application, with more compression, along with a properly built, matching-the-motor exhaust, you can have the best of both worlds. A motor that makes big torque early (additional compression helps here), and carries out thru the rpm band, as the heads breathe allowing the cam to pull big HP up and across to red line.
