BURKE MOUNTAIN NATURALISTS YOUNG NATURALISTS’ CLUB

WINTER BIRDS My mom and I went to the winter bird event at the Hyde creek education centre. There was a very nice leader named Gay Mitchell and two helpers. We learnt some birds’ sounds. I also discovered where birds live. For example: some birds live by the creek and others live on fields. We made some birds sculptures too. It took a while but it was worth it. While I was making my own bird, I felt like I was soaring through the sky Oh! did I mention we did some really cool stretches? All were birds’ stretches. At the end, we put all the birds we made together for a picture. I would recommend this event to everyone that likes birds because there were lots of very creative activities. by Yvette 8 years old

Coquitlam artist Gay Mitchell tells the Young Naturalists about birds in the wintertime.

We drew some winter birds and coloured some stained glass type bird drawings made by Gay.

Gay taught us how to make clay sculptures of birds.

Group photos of us and our clay birds.

* We thank Gay Mitchell, Christina Mitchell and Deanna McArthur for their excellent presentation, and the Hyde Creek Watershed Society for generously allowing us to use their education centre at the Hyde Creek Hatchery.
