Clubs “Nearby Nature Search”

Who says nature is something only found “out there in the wilderness”? A simple walk around the school yard or neighbourhood will yield some amazing nearby nature discoveries. Grades: K-7 Time: variable, but 30-45 minutes recommended Subject: Science, Creative Arts, Language Arts Location: Outdoors, near the school either in schoolyard or a walk through local neighbourhood or park. Materials: Nearby Nature Search Blackline Master (photocopy on rite as rain paper) Pencils Hand Lenses optional: clipboards, rain ponchos, nature notebooks Procedure: 1. Tell the kids they are about to become nature detectives! Have them find a partner to work with then hand out their sleuthing assignments (Nearby Nature Search Blackline Master). 2. Either within a well defined area or on a guided walk through a park, green space or neighbourhood, have the young naturalists find and draw the missing evidence. Wrap Up Questions: Did everyone find the same evidence? Did you see more/less than expected? What tools might have helped your search? Extension: Cut out the magnifying lens images and using string mark the location of the evidence on a neighbourhood or schoolyard map. Using the blank Nearby Nature Search Blackline Master design a assignment specific to your location, season, etc.
