HAVE
(The Original York Peppermint Pattie)
MADE HERE
Get the sensation…National Peppermint Pattie Day is each year on February 11! The York Peppermint Pattie was created in 1940, although local confectioners had been making their own versions since the early 1900s. As the chocolate-andpeppermint treat gained popularity due to its firmness and crispiness, each confection had to pass the “snap test” before packaging to ensure it snapped cleanly down the middle. Although the company moved to Reading in 1975—after being acquired by Peter Paul Cadbury—and is now manufactured by Hershey, the original Peppermint Pattie was produced and made famous in York. Best of all, the familiar Peppermint Pattie packaging still bears our name! 06 YoCo CONNECT | DIGITAL | YCEAPA.ORG
Cheers to a Successful Ninth Annual Restaurant Week York
Celebrating its ninth year in 2019, Restaurant Week York once again highlighted the important role that York’s independent restaurants and talented chefs play in giving York recognition as one of the top culinary destinations in southcentral Pennsylvania. Thirty-three restaurants participated this year during the weeklong event held from February 25 to March 3. Foodies got to experience the culinary creations from legendary York City restaurants like The Left Bank Restaurant & Bar and Roosevelt Tavern as well as new additions to York’s food scene, such as The Fig & Barrel Pub, HomeGrown Catering and Restaurant, and Zwild Vegans. Each year during Restaurant Week York, participating restaurants offer special prix-fixe menus and Restaurant Week–only exclusive offerings. Check out rwyork.com for what was on the menus this year. Restaurant Week York is organized by the York City Independent Restaurant Association. This year’s Restaurant Week York was sponsored by Fulton Bank, Kinsley Construction, United Fiber & Data, HOLLA Spirits, E. & J. Gallo Winery, Malfy Gin, and Templeton Rye. FOX 43 served as this year’s media sponsor. 07 YoCo CONNECT | DIGITAL | YCEAPA.ORG
FOR THE NEXT GENERATION: How Dover Area High School Gave Its Students a Voice
PROVIDED BY: KATIE MAHONEY, VICE PRESIDENT, MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS, YORK COUNTY ECONOMIC ALLIANCE
How do you construct a school for the next generation of students? You ask them for their insights. This approach is exactly what Dover Area High School took as school officials plan its next high school. I sat down with Principal Jared Wastler and two students of the planning committee, 11th graders Si Barnes and Shyanne Fleming. Both students are Resurgence Team members and student athletes. They were also named Future Leaders of York. Si is president of the Class of 2020, and Shyanne is a member of the National Honor Society. These students are individuals you would expect to have a voice in the school community, but they were merely freshmen when they were asked for their opinion on the future. “We had to think about what the younger generation would need when they hit high school,” says Shyanne. With the building slated to open in the fall of 2020, Si adds, “This isn’t for us; it’s what’s good for the next generation.” Through the student’s visions, and vision exercises with faculty representatives, they made several long-term decisions, two of which are particularly exciting to students. 08 YoCo CONNECT | DIGITAL | YCEAPA.ORG
Wider Hallways and Fewer Lockers
“With more students in each grade, starting with preschool, there are more students coming and they need the space,” Si says. In response, the school reserved space for only 200 student lockers in the new building. “Students don’t use them. Their athletic bags don’t fit in them, and we can better allocate that funding on something more beneficial,” Wastler explains.
A portion of that funding will be refocused on hallway message boards that can display event and athletic notifications. “The production of information on the boards ties directly into our curriculum,” he adds. The new high school will feature athletic rooms to house students’ bags during sports seasons.
More Windows and Common Space
Collaboration spaces have been added for group projects so that teachers can use a new method outside of the traditional classroom. Additionally, a generous open floor plan has been adopted, with common space, a food court cafe, auditorium, natatorium, and exterior windows.
That participation included Si and Shyanne both being vocal by speaking up at school board and community meetings. “Si’s passion helped the community hear it,” Wastler says. “A huge credit should be given to the school board and superintendent. They made every effort to put student opinions at the forefront. Our students were very honest and played a large role in the process. This building is designed by the entire school community. We didn’t cut corners; we listened. I’m very proud our kids have an impactful voice.”
“This was a very big conversation,” says Wastler. “With keeping everything in a common space, parents and visitors can experience several sporting events, or events in the auditorium, at the same time. The student feedback was critical. This building has to meet the needs they have. The students helped us get past hurdles and really made this happen by telling their story.” 09

York County Libraries by the Numbers
In the January/February 2019 edition of YoCo Connect, we highlighted how York County Libraries will embark on a major effort to connect YoCo’s citizens with emerging technologies needed for workforce development. A $10 million capital campaign currently underway will upgrade the physical infrastructure at three existing library locations: Kreutz Creek Library, KaltreiderBenfer Library, and Martin Library. Take a look at what you may not know about these three libraries that serve YoCo’s citizens.
Kreutz Creek Library The Kreutz Creek Library, 66 Walnut Spring Road in Hellam Township, York County, is set to expand from a 1,200-square-foot to a 4,700-square-foot brand-new facility. Cramped, crowded conditions with limited seating capacity will give way to open service areas with more meeting spaces and seating. Dedicated children’s, teens, and program spaces will alleviate space constraints the library is currently facing as it attempts to host all levels of programming.
Library Facts: Kreutz Creek Library opened its doors in February 1979. It’s currently housed in a double-wide trailer, a temporary housing unit built for victims of the 1972 Hurricane Agnes flooding. Kreutz Creek Library receives approximately 43,000 annual visitors (that’s about the population of the City of York). 10 YoCo CONNECT | DIGITAL | YCEAPA.ORG
Kaltreider-Benfer Library The Kaltreider-Benfer Library, 147 S. Charles St. in Red Lion, currently occupies about 9,500 square feet of space in a building constructed in 2000. Its expansion will add 15,000 square feet of repurposed spaces to the facility. Dark lighting and a lack of natural light in the current building will give way to added windows to allow more daylight inside and create improved lighting efficiencies for all library users. Dedicated children’s, teens, and program spaces will alleviate space constraints the library is currently facing as it attempts to host all levels of programming.
Library Facts: In 2012, the Kaltreider-Benfer Library piloted the Kindle Touch lending service, a program that provided the library a way to explore an innovative method of loaning books using the digital reader. The Kindles came preloaded with about 20 titles from the New York Times best-seller list. The library was named after Janet Kaltreider-Benfer and Dr. Kenneth Benfer who donated the Kaltreider family’s home at South Charles Street and Broadway in Red Lion for the library’s use in 1968. An extensive capital campaign resulted in the relocation of the library to its current location during the spring of 2000.
Martin Library Located at the intersection of East Market and North Queen streets in Downtown York since 1935, Martin Library offers library users access to its rich collections, programming, and community gathering spaces. One of the largest collections of books in YoCo exists here, along with more than 70 computers available for public access. Renovations to Martin Library made possible by the York County Libraries capital campaign will update the more than 10-year-old infrastructure with enhanced entrances, energy efficiencies, and touches of historic preservation. The library’s teen space—currently a dark, low-ceiling area—will be expanded, heightened, and brightened with the inclusion of digital media labs and several learning zones. More than 18,000-square-foot of underutilized space in the building will be transformed into community space with materials self-checkout stations and centrally located circulation desks.
Library Facts: The Pennsylvania Library Association named Martin Library “Library of the Year.” It is the first library in Pennsylvania to receive this statewide designation. The library also was awarded a PA Forward Gold Star Library honor. Martin Library maintains a 30-year long-standing partnership with its School Library Aides at Martin (SLAM) program. SLAM places trained library staff into school libraries throughout the School District of the City of York so that students have access to high-quality library services within their schools. 11 YoCo CONNECT | DIGITAL | YCEAPA.ORG
ADVOCACY
U.S. SENATOR BOB CASEY VISITS YORK; Talks Workforce and Infrastructure: Hosted at United Fiber & Data, Senator Casey was able to hear from several York County community stakeholders in regards to workforce development and the impact federal legislation has had on YoCo. With a countywide unemployment rate of 3.8%, one of the most common challenges for employers is the difficulty finding employees with the appropriate skills and training.
