Since August, the WBCO has increased membership 70 percent and hosted professional development luncheons featuring woman leaders including Keely Childers Heany, Editor-in-Chief of Susquehanna Style; Jennifer Foxworthy, a veteran and owner of Inspirationally Speaking LLC; Deb Harrison, the Executive Director of York County Children’s Advocacy

Episo is a career tool for Content Creatives and is located in Central Pennsylvania, in partnership with York College of Pennsylvania (YCP). Inspired by female leaders, and a room full of videocassette tapes, Marnie encourages women to find new circles and not shy away.

Q. What was your journey that led you to creating Episo? A. About 15 years ago, a friend’s uncle bought a television station in Philadelphia. He advised me to always make sure that I am one of the people at the decision-making table. His advice really stuck with me. During my professional career, Harmelin Media, one of the largest advertising firms on the East Coast, had a significant impact on me. There were three female leaders whom I really admired: Joanne Harmelin, Mary Meder, and Lyn Strickler. Joanne’s story about how she started Harmelin at her dining room table really inspired me. While in graduate school, at St. Joseph’s University, I studied the stock value of Disney and the pre- and post-

The WBCO aims to advance women’s economic investment by connecting them to resources such as educational luncheons, networking events, a mentorship program, and advocacy outreach. Since the WBCO’s launch, the YCEA has had the pleasure of hosting dozens of talented women from across York County at Heritage Hills Golf Resort & Conference Center on the second Tuesday of the month as part of the WBCO. The turnout of membership and support from business and community leaders joining the WBCO has been incredible. Through the leadership of a volunteer advisory council, the WBCO will offer an additional resource to women across York County through a mentorship program. Slated to start in the fall 2018, the program will provide women guidance on transitioning from school to work and gaining access to community involvement, resources, and assistance with career decisions by pairing them with a mentor who will share their skills and knowledge from their years of work experience. On April 10, attendees will learn about the power of negotiating from CGA Law Firm’s Attorneys Margaret “Mieke” Driscoll and Rebecca Shanaman. The last luncheon for the season will take place on May 8 with Jody Keller, Executive-in-Residence at The Graham Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Studies at Penn State York. Applications for membership to the WBCO for this season and the mentorship program are still open. To learn more about membership to the WBCO, the series of educational luncheons,

SHARING INSIGHTS
ON TAX REFORM
STORY BY DAVID GONZALEZ JR. MANAGER, ADVOCACY YORK COUNTY ECONOMIC ALLIANCE
On the heels of the passage of the recent Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, many businesses and individuals have questions about what changes will impact them for this filing year and how to plan for the future.
Claire Weaver, Partner with Baker Tilly in York, shared some insight on what she’s experiencing with the new changes in the tax code. Q. In your opinion, what are key takeaways from the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act that business owners should be aware of moving forward? A. In short, this is the most comprehensive overhaul to our tax code since 1986, which, in that time, it took two years to finalize the new regulations. Regulations will continue to be adjusted as the IRS polishes its interpretation of the tax law changes. This will be the most interesting aspect of integrating the changes into law. Q. What should families keep in mind in terms of Child Tax Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit? A. The Child Tax Credit has been enhanced to be even more beneficial. The credit can be worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child depending upon income—that’s twice as much as before. Dependent Care Credits were not impacted and stayed the same. For all the credits, there are certain criteria that taxpayers must meet to benefit. Your accountant will be able to help you. Q. What changes apply to charitable contributions? A. This is a big change in the tax law. The standard deduction increased; it’s now $12,000 for individuals
MERCY
or $24,000 for those filing jointly. If the total value of itemized deductions is higher than the standard deduction, the best solution would more than likely be to itemize. Otherwise, most may opt for the standard deduction.
A Legacy of Caring
Q. What’s in the forecast for 2018 filing? A. This will really depend on how the tax law changes

and how the regulators continue to work through the changes. Ultimately, business owners and
