ACCELERATING ACHIEVEMENTS: YOU MAKE YORK COUNTY STRONG

BY KEVIN J. SCHREIBER PRESIDENT & CEO, YORK COUNTY ECONOMIC ALLIANCE

need to be forecasting the rise of automation and the changing trends that impact our economy. Today, we know that addressing our future workforce needs is a significant challenge that can impede future progress. The partnership between the York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) and Kinsley Construction with the launch of a pre-apprenticeship program is a model of how we can overcome this challenge. In October, we partnered with Lancaster and Harrisburg to secure the RISE OF THE REST® designation, which brought AOL co-founder and iconic investor Steve Case to Central PA to shine a national spotlight on the innovation that is occurring in this region daily. It was not only an impactful day for the York community, but also one of monumental success when Device Events, based in It has been a vibrant year for York

Many of our members achieved milestones in 2017, and the YCEA is honored to be part of their successes. Continuing the Tradition of Catholic Education St. Patrick Catholic School opened its doors in 1851. This year, St. Patrick Catholic School celebrated its 165th anniversary. Smith believes it’s not only the family atmosphere, but also the commitment from the staff, parents, teachers, Church, and parish that defines the St. Patrick community. “I believe all educators work hard. York recently made national news. To be fair, York–Harrisburg–Lancaster also made national news. As a region, these three communities partnered together and secured designation as a 2017 RISE OF THE REST® metropolitan area. RISE OF THE REST® is a national initiative powered by iconic investor and co-founder of AOL Steve Case and his Washington, D.C.–based Revolution. Case recently authored The Third Wave, a book which argues that as technology becomes seamlessly integrated into our daily lives, innovation is able to occur much more rapidly and in areas like ours across the country without being geographically limited to places such as Silicon Valley or New York City. RISE OF THE REST® shines a spotlight on these secondary markets and the innovation that is occurring in them now. RISE OF THE REST® came to Central Pennsylvania on Tuesday, October 10. York was proud to be the first leg of the first stop of the “RISE OF THE REST® 6.0 Tour.” Case and his team — along with J.D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy — spent the morning with company CEOs, investors, government leaders, and entrepreneurs, as well as students excelling in robotic demonstrations and virtual reality presentations. In the few hours that RISE OF THE REST® visited York, we shined. The tour then continued to Lancaster and Harrisburg, where a pitch competition for a $100,000 investment took place.

This achievement is a win for York, a win for Central evening. The competition for this influential designation included a mix of health, tech, public safety, and PA, and a win for all “Third Wave” communities across the country. RISE OF THE REST® has visited dozens education ventures from across the region. Device Events landed that designation! STATE OF THE COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS STRENGTHS WITH PEOPLE AND PROGRAMS

BY DAVID GONZALEZ JR. ADVOCACY COORDINATOR YORK COUNTY ECONOMIC ALLIANCE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY SLAGLE DIGITAL AND DESIGN SPECIALIST YORK COUNTY ECONOMIC ALLIANCE

State of the County aims to highlight York County and its departments and employees. It’s an opportunity to gauge where the County stands in its efforts on the governmental level and economy. The County Commissioners and the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA)’s mission was to give County residents an understanding of how their government operates. After a 10-year hiatus, State of the County returned this year to Spring Grove Area High School. Spring Grove was chosen to expand the County government’s presence outside of York, an initiative that will be continued for future events.

STATE OF THE COUNTY TAKEAWAYS › York County Commissioners showcased three County departments: Veterans Affairs, Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and Parks & Recreation. › Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehabilitation Center operates on an annual $46 million budget, employs 550 people, and serves 365 residents. › The Department of Veterans Affairs has partnered with rabbittransit, which serves the area’s mass transit needs. Currently, rabbittransit offers a free shuttle service for veterans from York to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The Department of Veterans Affairs is seen as leading the effort toward increasing awareness of needs, maximizing benefit, and providing the greatest possible service to veterans. › County Commissioners awarded Chief Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley with a team player of the year award and Scott Lavis of the Clerk of Courts office with young professional of the year. This occasion marked the first time these awards were given to recognize department staff.

› The Department of Parks & Recreation maintains 11 York County parks, which cover more than 4,600 acres, with 29 full-time employees. In the last year, 4,000 tree seedlings were planted across all County parks. About 1.4 million people visited the County parks, and the department completed the creation of wetlands and stream restoration at William Kain Park. › YCEA President & CEO Kevin Schreiber shared that the state of York County’s economy is strong. He reported a 4.5 percent level of unemployment, lower than the state average. York County residents earn a median household income of approximately $58,000, higher than the state average, and 18 percent of residents are employed in the manufacturing sector, higher than the state and national average.

prepared hospitals in caring for stroke. Proud to be certified by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. WellSpan York Hospital has been certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission – a designation awarded to only 3% of registered U.S. hospitals. We are honored that this organization recognizes the skill of our physicians, nurses and other clinical staff members in caring for the most complex conditions.

This achievement, together with our Primary Stroke Centers in Gettysburg, Ephrata and Lebanon, means that WellSpan is WellPrepared to deliver better outcomes and survival rates for our friends and neighbors across southcentral Pennsylvania.
