Coming Up Coloured

S1: E3 By Mari Abraham

March, 2018. I am in the Hlatikulu mountain reserve, near Giant's Castle in South Africa. It is a traditional river ceremony. The drums are pulsing, the sage is burning, the sun is hot and the water is clear. Everything moves with grace and power. As the water is poured over my head, the energy inside my body and voice releases. I let go.... I am lying on a large, flat rock. under the surface of the water. All I hear is the rushing of the river as my body dissolves. A rainbow road appears. I am taken upstream in to the belly of the mountain. Suddenly, it is dark - but only for a brief moment. Then all around me people made of light begin to appear! They are all different colours! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink and many more. Their eyes are like stars and their voices, music. I sit and listen. They show me many things and share many stories, rich with wisdom and teachings. They acknowledge my hardships and what I have overcome - the lessons I was meant to learn though them. We remember each other. Then, I am pulled out of the mountain, back down the rainbow road and in to the top of my head - still submerged in the water. I breach the surface and take in some air. I look around. All is quiet. I do not know how long I have been gone and the others on the banks are amazed I am still alive.... These are the Rainbow Ancestors. They are part of my family - just as they are part of yours. Remember.

Embracing Winter by Kristy Janota

Do the shorter days during the long winter months impact you? Many people find winter difficult to weather while others embrace it! We all have our favorite seasons and people often spend too much time complaining, profusely, when it’s not the one they want. Here are tips to help get the most out of our coldest season of the year: 1) Pay attention to your words! Complaining only makes your situation worse. Talk about anything positive you can and give as little attention as possible to what you don’t like. 2) Keep your focus on what is going well. Always look for what you enjoy and appreciate about the current time of year. End each day with a list of what was great about it! 3) Look for activities you find fun! Rather than planning a chance to escape the season, embrace it! Play in the snow, go skiing, get out during the day to get some daylight or maybe even sunshine, curl up in a blanket with a good book, or invite a friend on an outdoor adventure. Let that inner child out to play! 4) Take advantage of the shorter days - get the kids in bed a bit earlier, snuggle with the dog or get some extra sleep yourself! 5) Enjoy bundling up! It’s a great time to wear the stylish boots, bring out all the cozy sweaters, and layer up for time outside. Overall, don’t wish the season away! Find anything you enjoy and make sure you add it to your days, often. And if you do need a little escape, take a journey with your mind. Using your powerful imagination to take a “mini trip” is a great revitalization tool!

HeartMath®

by Kent Watson A friend planned to cut a firewood tree and decided to fall the it between two other standing dead trees. When the chainsaw started a clear voice said, “You don’t have a hard hat.” “I know. I’ll get one someday,” he responded. The falling tree dropped between the two. He turned away and was driven onto his knees. The top of the falling tree, snapped off by the branch of another, landed flat on his head splitting it open. The Institute of HeartMath®, which has developed tools that allow persons to access their intuition, postulates the body can sense and process data about future events before they happen, (Science of the Heart, 2015). Our heart beats, or pulse rate, is not constant over time. This is known as heart rate variability (HRV). Participant’s HRV’s and brain waves were monitored. At button press, a computer randomly chose a calming or disturbing image. It was displayed 6 seconds later. It remained on screen for 3 seconds. At button press, the calming and disturbing image HRV’s rates slowed for 1.2 seconds. At that moment the heart knew which image type was chosen. The calming HRV leveled then speed up. The disturbing image HRV continued to slow. Next, at 2.7 seconds the disturbing or calming image signal reached the brain; 1.5 seconds after the HRV curves diverged. The brain knew which image type was chosen 3.3 seconds before the image was displayed. My friend decided where to drop the tree; the heart knew at 1.2 seconds; bad idea. The message reached the brain 1.5 seconds later; “You don’t have a hard hat.” The body’s perceptual mechanisms are always scanning the future within an information field that is beyond our awareness. Intuition is always active but, in a stressful world it is not often heard or is ignored if sensed. HeartMath is a registered trademark of Quantum Intech, Inc. HOLISTIC RELATIONSHIP ASSESSMENT by Cheryl PAIGE Often, when you are feeling dissatisfied in your relationship, it can be difficult to pinpoint why. To create a relationship where you feel fully engaged and fulfilled, it’s essential to look at your relationship holistically to assess where your relationship is at right now. The results are your baseline, the place from where you will move forward. Rate these areas of your relationship on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being terrible and 10 being unbelievably amazing: • Emotional Connection—How emotionally connected do you feel to your beloved? • Sex Life—How satisfied are you with your sex life? • Trust—Do you feel safe with each other, physically, emotionally and spiritually? • Communication—Do you communicate in a loving and effective manner? • Forgiveness/Letting Go of the Past—Are you holding on to grudges from the past in your relationship? • Settlement of Conflicts—Do you settle conflicts with love and respect? • Fun—Do you take the time to go out as a couple and do things that bring you joy? • Support—Do you support each other’s hopes and dreams? • Finances—Is money an area of tension? • Individuality—Are you each satisfied as individuals? When you feel unhappy, restless, or frustrated in your relationship, it’s because you want an improvement in at least one of these areas. Making a change begins with assessing where you are - ask yourself these questions: • Where are we in each area? • Is that where we want to be? • Where do we want to be? • What are we going to do to get to where we want to be? Do this assessment every week in order to build your relationship with intention. Cheryl is a Soulful Relationship & Life Coach, Writer & Speaker. BY MARILYN PUFF When we as a spirit - a chosen one of billions - decided to incarnate, we must have known it was a short-term contract! The art of leaving our bodies has been better understood in many Indigenous and Eastern cultures - they recognize that when death occurs, we depart with only our spirit or our state of mind. Connecting with my family members was intensely important to me, one year, while preparing for a two-day fast on a hillside. My sweatlodge keeper and over-seer of the fast, later told me about traditions of saying goodbye before each fast, because you might discover it was your time to leave this physical world. In one Buddhist tradition, a friend would say goodbye to her four-year- old son every night when she put him to bed - a ritual of feeling her intense heart-connection of love and becoming familiar with the pain and grief of letting go. Also in these teachings is a practice where you contemplate death five times a day in order to learn how to create happiness. To me, the key to accepting change is being deeply vulnerable. This is a lifelong practice of finding the safety to travel through your feelings during any loss, big or small, the feelings of sadness, anger, confusion and pain. It also requires taming of the mind. In order to learn how it can quiet at times, embrace it as an observer: its craziness, anger, blame, distraction and denial. So that in times of great loss, during these stormy waves of mind and emotion, you will find the ripple of acceptance and over time the seas will calm more often. The breath is another key to working with mind and emotion. Many traditions, healing modalities and activities use the breath as a lighthouse to navigate loss and sojourn our last passage. If all we take with us is our state of mind, then it is a huge gift to ourselves, to the world and to our loved ones to do the work required to find some peace of mind. We can make peace with how we have lived our lives and with knowing how we will leave this physical body. It is my goal to make this transition as spirit-filled as when I was born.

Aging

n our Western world it seems unlikely that energetic intervenEnergetically tion could help us age more beautifully. Energy Medicine, however, can help you enjoy healthy, glowing skin. By being mindful of your energies, ensuring the energies can flow and stimulating pressure points, you can regain texture and more youthful skin. by Marianne Ferguson EEM-AP

The 10 primary meridians are paired into 5 systems, all of which are involved in the beauty of your body: Water Element - the primary system for overall aging: The kidney/gallbladder-system is like the building blocks of your body; the health and vitality of this paired system governs the aging process. Earth Element - responsible for nourishing the muscles: The spleen/stomach enhance the muscle tone of your face and body. When this system is strong, your face muscles are naturally firm, contoured and lifted. Wood Element - controls muscle contraction: The liver/gallbladder-system affects the muscles of the face (combined with spleen/stomach). Liver/gallbladder is responsible for the contraction of your muscles, and governs the process that prevents skin from wrinkling by maintaining a harmonious flow of energy in your face and throughout your body. Metal Element - governs the skin: Lungs/large intestine - these organs are important for the release of toxins from the whole body. Excess toxins always show up in the skin. Fire Element - oversees circulation: Heart/small intestine - healthy circulation creates a radiating glow from your skin. Experience wonderful skin in just a few weeks’ time by adding this “Energetic Facial” into your daily routine: 1. With clean hands, beginning at the top of the face, hold open palms over forehead – count 3 and flip your hands so the backs of the hands are over the forehead – count 3. Continue this flipping process 10 times. Repeat this process over the face and neck.

finding happiness by FRAN BANTING

Happiness is one thing almost all individuals want in their lives.

Most will spend their entire lifetime seeking that emotional feeling of pleasure and contentment. They may: • Take the path of achieving more wealth, perhaps with a better paying job or winning the lottery; • Search for a partner to bring them the true happiness they desire; • Or some may change their personal appearance. While these avenues may bring some temporary joy, they will not create a sustainable increase in happiness, because circumstances have much less of an impact on our happiness. Our beliefs contribute a large percentage of how happy we actually feel. We must believe that we not only have an inner source of happiness, but that we can actually control its growth from within and raise the bar to a higher level. We just need to activate it:

MARCH

1-3 2019

First of all, we must believe in the power of our higher self and its ability to control our emotions. In this way we are creating a mental atmosphere that allows the happiness to occur. Having this state of mind gives us the faith to materialize happiness into our lives. Secondly, we must release any doubt and worry from our minds and replace it with positive thoughts. Even the smallest thoughts can create the biggest shifts. By removing the negative and replacing it with positive we are moving up a notch in the happiness scale. And lastly, being thankful for our abilities, our existence, our inner qualities and the goodness that resides inside creates a positive state of mind. This practice creates the vibration of happiness. Understanding that true happiness comes from within will help one have a long-lasting sense of satisfaction in life, and peace of mind. That my friend, is real happiness.

Say It to Your Dog by Tamryn Fudge

Your dog understands everything you say to them – the intention, the meaning and the emotion behind your words. Shamanic Dog Training teaches (and encourages) us that speaking is an essential part of developing relationships with our dogs. What can you tell your dog? Everything from the logic behind the rules of the house, to the timeline and impact of changes coming up in your lives together, to how long it will be until you return home from running errands. Here are some suggestions: Say you love them! They need to know how important they are to you and how you feel about them. Don’t hold back anything! Tell them why – They need to know why they can’t come to work with you, why you are painting the walls with the smelly pink stuff, why your dad doesn’t like kisses, and why things are happening around them that they can neither control nor change. Tell them when. They need to know when you are leaving for your walk, when you will be back from a business trip and when their favourite person is visiting again - help your dog predict his day so he can feel more included in your daily life and a sense of belonging. Your words are transmitted through the energetic web of connection and consciousness that surrounds us all. Your ideas, explanations and expressions get translated exactly as you intended them – directly to your dog. When you speak to your dog you help them feel more close to you and more comfortable in this crazy human world they are stuck in. Don’t be shy, don’t hold back: tell them anything and everything about the things that matter to them.

Tamryn Fudge teaches shamanic dog training and offers group sessions, private sessions and online training, specializing in aggression and behaviour problems, everyday learning and puppy teaching. Located in Kamloops BC, www.infinitedog.ca. WINTER 2019 | INTERIOR WELLNESS

3 Tips

on Keeping the Relationship Fire Burning

THIS WINTER by Angela Foster

Traditionally winter is a time of reflection and introspection, a time for one to go more inside both emotionally and physically and make plans for the upcoming year. Winter also brings with it a desire to hibernate, which can often transfer over to our relationships - sometimes with this season we can feel less 'active' in our lives and the efforts we put in. This does not usually serve a common benefit if we allow our relationship practices to drop off, which is why it's imperative to 'hold space' for the growth and evolution of your relationship just as you would your child, home or garden. So, how do we keep the relationship fires burning? Here are three gentle reminders of how you can experience growth with your partner over the winter season:

Above all this winter, focus on growing who and what you love. Angela Foster has worked with individuals and couples for 20 years in her practice as a licensed group and relationship counselor and coach. Angela’s training extends from the study of Psychology and Counseling Sciences to her ongoing doctorate work in Holistic Life Counseling. www.rightsofpassageceremonies.com

Let me write your love story...

Acceptance You may have your own idea of what winter is to you, perhaps skiing, snowshoeing or bonfires. Your partner, however, may have other things in mind. Work on finding the place of compromise if possible. Try rotating activities you both enjoy - if this is not viable, it is less frictional to learn acceptance of your partner's wishes and love them where they are. Acknowledgment It is easy to take for granted something that is always there. We can become complacent on extending our love and showing how much we value our partner's gifts. Take time each day or at least a few times a week to share with your partner what you value about them. Everyone likes to feel appreciated, and this may result in a daily or weekly sharing practice that helps your partnership evolve. Passion Yes! Each week practice at least one passionate gesture or action, even if it makes you giggle, it is more conducive to bringing more life to your partnership than by not practicing it at all.

Angela delivered a service that we would recommend to anyone who wants a beautiful marriage ceremony tailor-made to suit them and their partner. She took the time and energy to get to know us and as a result our ceremony was perfect. Angela ensured everything we wanted to say about our love story was said and that our vows were completely unique and based on both of our personalities. Her loving nature and calm mannerism made us both feel relaxed and made our real-life moment, magical. Words cannot express my gratitude to Angela for this once in a life time experience she helped create. - Erica Angela Foster bM.msc

Most of us have been there at one time in our lives - the moment when there is too much to do day to day, running from point A to B to C, the to-do list overflowing and multiplying between work and home, and tonight’s dinner? Ha!

by tracy munson

You're struggling to keep up. You have been sweeping the way you have been feeling under the rug for some time now and you're about to crack. You can feel the frustration bubbling, but you got this..... Until you're running a couple minutes behind and the kids are dragging their feet. Or you are multitasking trying to catch up on a few chores and all of a sudden you smell your dinner burning. Or you have a super important meeting or appointment to get to and you can't find your keys. The volcano erupts and it all comes out: yelling, screaming, slamming, frustration, anger, crying.....defeat. It's all about prevention!

• Meal planning - especially on those busy nights/days. (The slow cooker has become my best friend. I prep it the night before, turn it on in the morning, and it's ready when we get home!)

Do you have the right mindset to take things to the next level, personally & professionally? j Develop a success mindset j Replace self-doubt with self-confidence j Grow yourself and your business j Have peace of mind and happiness

• Getting up a few minutes earlier to ensure you won't be rushing. With kids, especially, you never know what you're going to get in the morning - give yourself, and them, extra time. You know you're winning when you get to relax for a good 10 minutes before leaving. • Making lunches the night before - saves time in the morning (and money if you don't need to buy it because you didn't have time).

• Order your groceries online for pick up or delivery - this has become my favourite weekly routine. With 4 kids - this is a saviour! By saving yourself a few minutes here and there and preparing ahead of time, you can prevent the crash of overwhelm and enjoy life that much more. The easier you make it on yourself, the 'lighter' you become, the happier you get, and the easier it will be to overcome life's challenges when they arise. You are not alone. I am here for you. Do your best. Do what you can. Take time for you. Rest. Be Present. If you want a relationship that looks and feels like the most amazing thing on earth, you need to treat it like it's the most amazing thing on earth.

turn the rift with

your adult child into a gift

by MAGGIE REIGH

Do you wish you could be closer with your adult child? Have you poured your heart into parenting and now feel them turn away from you? The helplessness, guilt, desperation, anger, and feelings of failure can be suffocating. “What can I do?” you ask yourself… and a never-ending stream of possible “fixes” flood your mind, day and night! If the rift with your adult child is keeping you awake at night you are not alone! I’ve brushed up against this myself and helped many clients and friends to break through these heart-wrenching situations to experience a deeper, richer relationship than ever before! The key is to stop trying to fix your circumstances or your child and to turn your attention within: 1. Desire inner peace more than you desire your child to change so that you can have inner peace! 2. Instead of seeing this as happening to or against you, see this as an opportunity to deepen soul connections, expand your relationship, and to release guilt, anger, frustration, resentment, sorrow etc. 3.Explore and release separating emotions so that unifying emotions such as love and gratitude can fill your heart and ripple out to your child.

4. Forgiveness comes when you can thank yourself, the Universe, and your child for-giving you the opportunity to release long held emotional grief, expanding into your soulful-self, and ultimately deepening your relationship. Friends and clients have repeatedly proven that shifting their own position generates shifts in their child without saying a word to them! One mom, having had no contact with her son for nearly a year, released her nightmarish grief and guilt and within 12 hours her son texted saying he was going for a job interview. Following our second session he posted on FB stating how he was turning his life around. Her nightmares have ended and their soulful connection deepens. You, too, can turn your rift into a gift of deeper connection when you release your own turmoil and start connecting soul-to-soul rather than role-to-role.

Maggie Reigh, B.Ed; B.T; CHt. is both a dynamic and entertaining speaker as well as a highly skilled hypnotherapist. Individual therapeutic sessions can be experienced in the comfort of your own home (around theglobe) or in Maggie’s home office in the beautiful Okanagan, BC Canada. 778-214-4684 www.maggiereigh.com

Western Astrology Horoscope: January 1 to 31, 2019

Capricorn: December 21 to January 20

Likely a mellow, even uneventful, month for Capricorn. Periods of deep introspection bring moments of sudden clarity around personal motivations, behavior patterns & irrational fears. For some Caps, relationships may become very intense or even end as others’ secrets, evasions, betrayals etc. could suddenly be revealed. Question assumptions in the light of our own illusions.

Aquarius: January 21 to February 18

After six months of delays, slogging & problem solving, Aquarians experience some forward momentum & progress now. Confusion disperses, blockages clear, relationship issues resolve & Aquarians can resume living fifty years in the future as usual. It’s useful to note with gratitude how much old anxiety & fear has actually dissolved in the past year’s healing energies.

Pisces: February 19 to March 20

Like Capricorn, Pisces can also have a comfortable month. However, they may be restlessly casting around to discover that undefinable mission they often sense is theirs to undertake. Vague, just out of reach, but somehow infinitely magnetic, this mystical call to action imbues Pisceans with a curious air of detachment, as if they see something beyond the limits of this world.

Aries: March 21 to April 20

Life could feel electrically charged for Aries now. Something intriguing is in the air, as if secrets are being kept & mysterious, suspenseful events are about to happen. Well-balanced Arians will merely smile & shake their heads a little, but some folks may become suspicious, anxious, cranky, especially in the beginning of the month. There certainly are unexpected shifts happening this year but not in a conspiratorial sense.

Taurus: April 21 to May 21

Taurus has a sense of expectancy, a feeling of preparation for something new, without exactly knowing what. Old projects are being completed with some satisfaction, as if clearing the ground for something quite different. Taurean patience is supporting the general sense that upcoming change is positive, empowering, without threat & evolving just as it should….

Gemini: May 22 to June 21

This could be an awkward month for Gemini. The first week is not auspicious at all but then improvements begin. The Twins will likely struggle with organization, timelines, relationship issues & any number of small to medium setbacks. Most will not have truly bad luck, but don’t take chances either. Communications can falter at inopportune moments. Have a backup plan for those important projects.

28 INTERIOR WELLNESS | WINTER 2019

Cancer: June 22 to July 23

Capricorn is Cancer’s opposite sign and is likely creating resistance now. Cancer can use it to ensure that every detail is in order when Aquarius brings on swift progress. Cancer can be powerfully in tune with the ebb & flow of Astro energies, supporting timely preparation & advancement.

Leo: July 24 to August 23

The King of Cats, quite at home with Capricorn’s worldly outlook, can now curiously consider the new year’s untapped potentials. Mid-month, Aquarius’ dispassionate nature may throw shadows onto Leo’s outlook, focusing in on less satisfactory, and more uncomfortable prospects.

Virgo: August 24 to September 23

Virgo may well begin the year simplifying & organizing, utilizing Capricorn’s Saturnine practicality to pare down the new year’s confusing possibilities to bare bones options. Trust Virgo to create elegant simplicity—unless more chaotic personalities are involved.

Libra: September 24 to October 23

Capricorn’s somewhat dogmatic decisiveness can set Libra’s sensitively calibrated scales swinging rather wildly, especially after a hectic holiday season. The month begins with a rush of Astro energy almost guaranteed to leave Libra breathless, even confused. By month-end the dust should settle with Libra more upbeat & balanced, though busy. Scorpio: October 24 to November 22 With Pluto transiting Capricorn, Scorpio is likely in a serious, deeply introspective life review. This could trigger intense transformation, with powerful lifestyle or career shifts later on. Some deep emotional issues could ignite passionate, angry, even violent responses to current experiences. If the going gets rough, professional therapy can provide a lifelong investment in useful, healing personal growth for oneself.

Sagittarius: November 23 to December 22

Jupiter’s recent move “home” in Sagittarius is very comfortable, restoring ebullience & more fortunate experiences for Sag natives—& everyone else too. We can all anticipate optimistic good fortune bringing greater abundance this year. Practicing moderation in the face of Jupiter’s extravagant expansion & exaggeration is important too. up-level Your life

energetically

with essential oils By Brittany Gill

You’ve probably heard by now that “lavender heals burns” and “tea tree is a great disinfectant” - but we often don’t hear about is the energetic properties of essential oils. Each plant carries a specific energy to it, and when applied to the chakras and meridians of the body, we can create instant change and flow within the physical and energetic bodies. Here are three simple applications of household essential oils you probably already have in your home, to up-level your life energetically: Tea Tree - Apply daily to the wrist points, back of the neck, and heart.Tea tree is one of the most common essential oils. You probably have it available in your home! Tea tree, with it’s disinfectant properties, helps to clear out stagnant energy. It works on the same vibrational level as sage and helps break patterns and clear the programmed limiting beliefs. Lemongrass - Apply to the top of the head and over the heart. Lemongrass helps clean out anything left over that the tea tree didn’t get, it breaks up the stuck energy and clears it

out fast. Lemongrass and tea tree work magically together when used on a regular basis. Frankincense - Apply to the third eye and top of the head. With the huge energetic release that the latter two oils create, it’s important to replace that empty space with new energy. Frankincense helps to harmonize, replenish and re-instill positive and empowering thought patterns, connecting to the divine wisdom within you! Use your intuition: if an oil is being called to be put somewhere else, trust that your body knows best! If you don’t have all the oils, use one or two and watch what comes up emotionally. And be sure to drink lots of extra water - healing is hard work! Brittany Gill is a modern day witch, social media goddess, intuitive creatrix, and visionaryleader. the revolution of

Fitness for Women by Kate Middleton

Up until now, every fitness program or workout system you've done has been based on the way a man's body works - which is fine…if you're a man. If, however, your body is physically female, then the linear progressing fitness you've forced into your world (or rebelled against), is all wrong for you. Ever feel like crap because last week you went to the gym and rocked it, and now your body is fighting you every step of the way and you can’t figure out why?? Guess what? At certain times of the month, you are physiologically up to 11% stronger!* (right around ovulation, in case you’re wondering) Ever feel like you’re a goddess of nutrition and health, and then not only does your willpower go MIA, you seem to gain weight just by thinking about food? Guess what? At certain times of the month your metabolism will literally be 7-8% higher than normal!** (just before your period starts) As a male, you would have a fairly even-keeled hormone base to work with throughout the month. This makes it easy to plan workouts that increase in intensity and have regularly set rest days. You could have confidence that if you do the

work, your muscles will get stronger in a predictable pattern. And you certainly wouldn’t have serotonin dips that bring on comfort-food cravings or estrogen crashes that make it harder to sleep. You’re female! Let’s celebrate! :). You get to spend the rest of your life with you. Wouldn’t it be great if you could spend that life in harmony with your body? Here are the coles notes on organic fitness: • Follicular Phase: HIIT and higher-intensity workouts • Luteal Phase: Endurance-type workouts You can’t change the hormones, so work with them and you can get faster fitness results while feeling better doing it. *Journal of Physiology **American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

trauma

t was the first time in my adult life that I spoke: my first workshop. I had a general outline, which I allowed spirit to pervade through me. I spoke about trauma. Specifically, thriving after trauma. I was delighted that I had a full room (it was small, therefore easy to fill…but it was full). Tears came to my eyes when I witnessed those listening taking notes. We shared the floor. I allowed the words guided by spirit and intuition to flow through. I didn’t really know what I would be talking about - I couldn’t bring notes. It was all very organic and beautiful. At the end, I was impacted by a very profound truth: There is no after trauma. Certainly, you can do your recovery work and you can learn your triggers…but, there will always be this part of you that experienced something that wired your neural pathways a certain way. You could go for years without any reminders, and then suddenly, something will tap into that part of you, and you will wonder why. You wonder how, after all this work and all this recovery, you still have a trigger. And you’re put on the roller-coaster again, and it could be for a shorter duration, but that trigger is still there.

Our brains are specifically designed to survive, taking in and processing our highly complex environments. Once we experience something, no matter if it was an intense one-time experience, or a slow build-up of patterns and conditioning, our brains will assess each situation with that general wiring. Most of our patterns have become involuntary - like breathing, most of the time we don’t notice we’re doing it - not until something shakes us awake. So, really, there is no “thriving after trauma”. Truthfully, it is “thriving through trauma”: being diligent in our self-awareness and self-care, and not beating ourselves up when we fall back into it. Why be worried about getting “there”? “Here and now” infused with compassion is the best medicine.

Shifting Your

Perspective On Pot BY STACY KRAEMER

In a world where chronic illnesses are common, pharmaceuticals are the norm, and the hustle and bustle of today’s society dictates the lack of self care for health and wellness, we are living in a time that desperately needs a more natural approach to our health now so, more than ever.

tions. It is okay to not yet understand the benefits and effects of cannabis but it’s time to learn and understand with an open mind. It is knowing you have alternative, natural medicinal options to treat ailments rather than feeling forced to use pharmaceuticals.

Que in…*drumroll please*… Cannabis!

Let’s not forget about many other benefits of cannabis and hemp – being able to use this beautiful plant as food, fibre and fuel. For thousands of years people have used cannabis and hemp for many different things including animal feed, cooking, clothing, oil and fuel, paper, rope, sails, skin care, etc. With our planet and environment so fragile and on the brink of catastrophe, cannabis brings a crucial, positive environmental shift to our new-aged world. Sustainable hemp-based products can replace many different single-use items and plastics with biodegradable hemp plastics, replace non-renewable oils and gases, lessen our waste in the landfills, and significantly cut down on deforestation.

“Cannabis is the most widely used medicinal substance in the world. It’s been used this way for thousands of years. It’s one of humanity’s oldest cultivated crops. With education and some trial and error, each person can form a unique relationship to this herbal remedy to treat and prevent countless common ailments!” (Dee Dussault, Author of Ganja Yoga) When we shift our perspective and remove the oppression around treating cannabis as a street drug with no medicinal benefit, to treating cannabis as a holistic medicinal plant, it enables people to ask questions, educate themselves on the topic, and ends the stigma around cannabis that has lingered for years. It is taking back your power as an individual who has the right to a healthy life and natural medicine. It is empowering yourself and others to educate and ask questions about cannabis, rather than disregard it due to confusions and societal expecta-

Finding

Joy Through The Season Love is throwing yourself into a stormy sea, hoping there are arms to catch you, knowing that without the leap, there is only the safe and lonely shore.

At this time of the year, so many prepare for the upcoming holiday season, hoping that joy will be found in the giving, the singing, the getting together with others; while many find that the long winter days compiled with battling seasonal depression can make it quite difficult to put on a happy face. I have suffered depression for many years, and through a variety of affirmations, meditation, nutrition and exercise, I find that these help me manage this. However, the closer I come to Christmas, I am reminded of my loss of my mother, three years ago to dementia. I remember her kindness, her love, her appreciation of singing carols, and knitting for the neighbours. I remember her butter tarts, which I have never been able to duplicate due to her "secret ingredient". I remember that no matter how difficult life was for her, she always could find something to laugh about, and this eases my pain. In these memories, they help me find my way through the darkness of the night, through the uncertainty of life itself and through the moments when missing her is all consuming. I remind myself that the holidays is about so much more, than rushing around or trying to buy the perfect gift; it is about cherishing moments that will last a lifetime. This year I have chosen to knit hats for The Women's Shelter and give back to those having a truly rough time. I will do as my late mother did, and do baking to take to those who are alone or also missing a loved one. I will stop and look into a strangers eyes and wish them well and offer some change. In reaching out to others, and getting outside of myself and my own suffering, I become more than my pain and more than my situation. Living with depression and choosing not to use prescription medication, means living with the highs and lows, and seeking to embrace a gift through it all. I am grateful of the love that continues to be ever present in my life, through friends and family, and the neighbours who stop and make the time to connect is a gift in itself. I encourage everyone this season, to make the time and stop and smell the roses around you. I invite each person in my community to create a new tradition that can be shared with others . I also wish to remind us all , that patience is truly a virtue and understanding is a blessing, when put into action. From the outside it is easy to think we know each others story, however when we take the time to listen, there is so much more we can walk away with, including compassion. by Sharon Strang Our breath is the most valuable thing that we possess. It is life - our vital energy. It is the key to success, abundance, joy, and an easier life… which is something we say we all want. We all resist the very thing that will help us. For example, whenever you get anxious or busy, do you notice how you hold your breath or breathe shallowly? Basically, it is our ego resisting the clarity, peace, and compassion for ourselves, which reflects onto others. Much in life on this planet often does not make sense, and so we continue the search for happiness and truth, even though it is often right in front of us. Or rather, always within us. I just taught one of my Healing Massage courses last weekend, in which breath is a major component. Along with my students, I am always learning. I have been consciously working on myself for over 30 years, and there is always more to learn! My ego says, “Enough already…no more!! I want to be

comfortable.” Well, Deepak Chopra says, “The world cannot be improved one ego at a time!” If you want to help effect others positively and help the world with its evolution, we need to choose to pursue purpose for the whole, rather than for just our self. So I keep breathing more, and I keep supporting others to breathe more, so that together we can all journey to more compassion, abundance, loving kindness, and the peace that surpasses understanding.

AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO

Adrenal Fatigue by Tanya Thompson

Stress is part of life that in moderate doses can help stretch our horizons; when it’s chronic, however, the impact can be depleted adrenal glands leading to a myriad of health problems.

cycle. Changing this cycle requires addressing the root cause of the problem and a long-term commitment to your health. Understanding what is happening in your body and supplementing your system is helpful, however, what is the root cause?

The adrenal glands’ primary purpose is to help us cope with stress through the production and secretion of hormones (adrenaline and cortisol, for example). They are also responsible for producing and secreting a wide range of hormones. As we age, they become the primary source of the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in both men and women.

An Ayurvedic approach to balancing adrenal fatigue is to respond to the depletion with a rejuvenative program that includes building and nourishing: rejuvenating foods, herbs, and lifestyle practices that examine the sources of stress, how they can be reduced or eliminated entirely and focusing on changing our relationship with our stressors while training our bodies to respond to stress in healthier ways. Ultimately, this approach will pacify the vata dosha which governs the nervous and endocrine systems.

Hormones travel everywhere in our body, helping to regulate the behaviour of every organ we have, as well as our emotional and mental well-being. When the body needs more stress hormones than it can make, it can turn nutritive sex hormones, like progesterone, into cortisol. This reallocation of resources is irreversible; once a progesterone hormone has been turned into cortisol, it cannot be turned back into progesterone - even after the threat has passed. Chronic stress without relief can establish a self-reinforcing

slightly sweet flavor, with just a hint of fermentation. Fermenting nut mylk is even easier! Place ¼ cup grains into a first ferment jar and add 4 cups of your favorite nut mylk. Leave it in a warm spot for 24 hours. The sugars in the nut mylk will be eaten up by the water kefir grains.

8LI IGSRH +IVQIRX

A second ferment for 24 hours more will make you a wonderful, naturally carbonated soda with all of the benefits from the first ferment. All you have to do is strain the liquid from the grains of the first ferment into a swivel top bottle that has a tight rubber seal.

There has been a big insurgence of fermented foods in today’s markets, menus, and diet plans. There is one that has been under the radar but is making a huge splash into the market place. Let me introduce you to the multiple uses of water kefir! ;LEX MW ;EXIV 0IǻV$

WATER KEFIR IS A FERMENTED BEVERAGE THAT IS BRIMMING WITH PROBIOTICS AND VITAMINS Baby water kefir grains/cultures/tibicos have been around for centuries and are thought to have originated in Mexico in the 1800s. Water kefir grains (nothing to do with actual grain) are a symbiotic relationship between good yeast and good bacteria and form a tiny little clear jelly that when fed sugar, produce a powerhouse probiotic beverage that boosts gut health, energy and immunity. ;L] MW ;EXIV 0IǻV WS &QE^MRK$

The best part about making water kefir is that within 24 hours you have a fermented low sugar drink that is: ¨ DAIRY FREE ¨ FULL OF MAGNESIUM, ¨ ORGANIC ¨ FOLATE, ¨ CONTAINS 30 PROBIOTIC ¨ VITAMIN K, STRAINS ¨ ELECTROLYTES, AND ¨ CONCENTRATED WITH ¨ ENZYMES B12, B6, and B1

To flavor your ferment, add your favorite juice, tea, herbs, or fresh fruit to the bottle and seal it shut. Leave it in a warm place for 24 hours and slowly and carefully open the lid. The water kefir eats up the sugar in the bottle, creating natural carbonation, leaving you with a fizzy soda. IMPORTANT NOTE: water kefir can be explosive if you leave it out in the warmth too long. Always refrigerate immediately after you have reached the perfect flavor and effervescence. Your bottles can then stay in your fridge for up to 6 weeks!

Kids absolutely love the fascinating process of making water kefir and getting to drink the fizzy, soda-like drink after only 48 hours. Parents love it too because their kids are reaping so many health benefits without the kids even knowing it! 0IITMRK SYV +YV 'EFMIW -IEPXL]

Did you know that pets can have gut issues as well? You can safely feed your furry family members either the grains or the first ferment on a daily basis. We recommend soaking their dry food in the liquid for an extra special treat that your pets will love! ;LIVI HS . XEVX$

You can find D.I.Y. Water Kefir Soda Kits and fresh, plump water kefir grains that are ready to make your wonderful drinks, smoothies and elixers at your local Health Based Grocery Stores.

A Seniors End Of Life

JOURNEY by Carolyn Tytor

As i have assisted in caring for my elderly mother, who passed away three years ago come December, from Dementia, and in order to care for her in a better way, i chose to take a Healthcare Program at TRU, I was blessed with the gift of being able to see through her eyes. As a senior, who was fiercely independent and self taught in many areas of her life, my mother Muriel suffered a stroke and major brain surgery over 27 years ago. Through her journey of recovery, she had to learn to walk again, talk again and eat again. Everything in her needed a jump start, as well when you are elderly the recovery time is a bit longer, and different from person to person.

were many lucid days, that allowed joyfully connections, heartfelt visits, as well as celebrating her 85th birthdays with friends and family. On her last day, i remember staying with my mother for the majority of the day, comforting her while she slept, and returning later as spirit guided me to. I held her hand, and released her to join her ancestors, saying," you no longer need to be in pain anymore momma,".I left her at 11;00 pm at night, and one half hour later received a phone call from her night nurse, telling me that she held my mothers hand while she took her final breath. I was so very grateful and in deep appreciation that my mother was not alone when she passed.

In the course of 20 years my mother had another 4 strokes, as well as a broken hip from a fall. From the affects of anestetic, she began showing signs of Dementia. This began a feeling of lost memory, fear and struggle. Through her process, she had to relearn many things and as she was a strong woman, continued to do so using her gift of humor along the way. As my mom also had to accept that her new home, would be in full care facility, the feelings of isolation and abandonment would also be a struggle. In time, she would feel more at ease, due to the amazing staff who cared for her. She would also meet old friends and develop new relationships, as well as getting to know her care staff on a deeper level.

No one knows how life can change from one moment to the next, and when a loved one takes ill, we never know how much time we will have with them, or what quality of care they will need and receive. I tried to make each day with my mother one filled with laughter, enjoying her favorite movies and music, and many hours sitting in the garden just being there and present.I treasure those moments, and know her spirit is with me in everything i do today. I hope when it is my time, that i am half the woman my mother Muriel was, so strong, so brave, so courageous. Bless our mothers, for without her i would not be who i am today. kuxstemc

Toward the end of her life, within the last 3-6 months, my mother had to be treated for vascular disease in her legs due to diabetes; with chronic pain, necrosis in her toes, and being treated with heavy pain medication which somedays would render her to sleeping for the most part. In the last month of her life, December 2015, which was also her birthday month, there

after the by VickI Scott

As I drive home for this years’ Interior Wellness Festival, I intentionally leave the radio off to allow myself some quiet space to process the weekend. I am literally buzzing with vibrational energy. I took in multiple workshops throughout the weekend some educational, some just for fun, some out of my comfort zone, and some comfortably familiar. The thing they all had in common, however, was that each one challenged me or shifted my thinking in some unique way.

It is interesting how, instead of providing a sense of wellness, self care can elbow its way onto that ever-existing "to-do" list. Sometimes self-care becomes another chore.

I attend the festival every year. It has become an integral part of my personal and professional growth. I typically attend alone, which gives me the quiet space I need in my head to absorb and digest the information I receive in each of the workshops. I tote along a journal so I am able to jot down thoughts, moments, and take-aways to reflect upon later. I always come away from this weekend with a plethora of energy and insight. Swimming in thoughts of how I am going to apply all the things I learned this weekend, I resonate on the theme of the closing speakers (and this is not a direct quote):

Stretch…

Don't try to integrate everything at once. Take the time to digest and process one small bit at a time. In a fast paced world, with to-do lists and agendas, deadlines and commitments, we often feel pressure to accomplish.

BE BUSY.

GET IT DONE.

38 INTERIOR WELLNESS | WINTER 2018

DO.

Exercise more, eat well, get enough sleep, get your steps in, take your supplements, meditate, stretch, drink more water, drink less wine, spend more time in nature, read personal development books, eat chocolate, don’t eat sugar…

Ironically, by placing too many demands on ourselves in the name of "wellness," the work of being better can actually make us worse. So as I drive toward home, I let this advice settle into me. I remind myself that becoming a better human sometimes means relaxing the "to-do's.” Meaningful change occurs slowly, authentically, a little bit at a time. One breath at a time, one day at a time, and one festival at a time. Until next time, A patient festival-goer Vicki Scott’s passion is being a communicator, a teacher, writer, speaker, casual blogger, and by training a Special Educator and Resource Teacher working in the Kamloops School District. Her personal struggles with mental health have led her to the healing arts as one way of maintaining wellness. She is currently training to be a Mindfulness and Meditation Coach, in addition to being a Reiki Practitioner. http://teamscott4.wixsite.com/literature-blog
