An Interview
with Sri Dharma Mittra
Sri Dharma Mittra will be at the SOYA Annual Yoga Retreat in Naramata, BC this coming June 10-12, 2011. Sri Yogi Dharma Mittra the legendary “Teachers’ Teacher” and “Asana Master” is the founder and director of Dharma Yoga Center New York. He has been actively disseminating the sacred science of Yoga since 1967. His practice and steady application of his beloved Guru’s teachings form the backbone of his approach to a lineage seeped in classical tradition. Sri Dharma Mittra has shared these living practices with hundreds of thousands of Yoga seekers, Yoga teachers, and devotees the world over. His Life of a Yogi Teacher Training Immersions has been a supportive platform for the dissemination of Dharma Yoga into the lives of many of today’s new teachers. Sri Yogi Dharma today, at 71, is as active as ever teaching, guiding and inspiring daily at his school on 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue in New York City, and through workshops and Teacher Training Immersions the world over. Countless people have been inspired and learned from him over the years through his famous Master Chart of 908 Postures, his book, “ASANAS 608 Yoga Poses” or his much acclaimed DVD titles: “Maha Sadhana Levels I and II.” For more information on Sri Dharma’s life and work, go to www.dharmayogacenter.com.

"With constant practice, one can improve his physical body and mental attitude rapidly, thereby igniting the higher motives of making ones self useful to himself and all mankind." Dharma Mittra What kind of Yoga do you practice and teach? I have been teaching many aspects of Yoga everyday for the past 45 years. “Be receptive” is my motto, and in order to make the asana practice complete and whole one must learn to offer every action to the Supreme Self or God. These are the teachings imbedded in Dharma Yoga, the name coined by Ismrittee Devi. Every Dharma Yoga class is complete in the main practices needed for a healthy body and healthy mind. Yoga is the settling of the mind into silence, and only a calm mind will be able to find uninterrupted concentration or meditation. The postures, the breathing exercises, and deep relaxation as taught in every class, all offer guidance in the practice of concentration without interruption. A main teaching in Dharma Yoga is the importance of being firmly established in the Ethical Rules. Within the Yamas, Ahimsa or non-violence is the starting place to learn and practice compassion for all beings, and therein it is the foundation for all that is Yoga. I also teach from scriptures such as the Bhagavad-Gita and Yoga Sutras, and chant mantras in order to cultivate devotion. My own practice began with Karma Yoga or selfless service, doing everything that needed to
be done for my Guru. I am a selfless servant who is here only to share and serve what I know to others, so they can find their true self, and ultimately peace of mind. I hope you understand as that is Dharma Yoga in a nutshell. Describing Yoga and Asana, you are quoted as saying: “It’s not necessary to be flexible to practice Yoga. The most important posture is the Headstand, and it requires no flexibility at all.” How does this relate to the 908 poses captured on your famous poster? What Yoga really is, is not all the advanced difficult poses like being able to put your feet behind your head, but learning to see yourself in everyone and offering up the fruit of every action to the Lord. I always mention in classes that the Asana practice is really a preparation continued...

for truly practicing Yoga. It is something that makes the body healthy and strong so we can develop the fortitude to sit and concentrate without interruption in order to discover who we really are. I have devoted every day of my life for the past 50 years to Asana practice. For me Asana is more than physical exercise, in that every pose represents a state of consciousness, and in assuming a complete pose, we have a chance to experience something we have never experienced before. This has an effect on the mind and one can even come to taste meditation right there in the physical practice. When the thought arrived in my mind to create the Master Yoga Chart of 908 Postures, I wanted it to be first and foremost an offering to my Guru as well as to inspire people into Yoga Asana practice. I organized it in a fashion that all the posture variations I knew or created were lined up together so they can be practiced in succession according to ability. If you look to see Halasana, the shoulder stand, you will see so many variations to practice. In regards to Sirshasana, the headstand, it is a more advanced posture, but can be mastered quite easily with correct direction. And yes it is true as I say; it does not demand flexibility. But is does require control and steadiness, and that is often an attribute that needs lots of practice. I still love practicing Asana and manifesting (creating) postures that are both beautiful, challenging, and create a special state of consciousness to advance a person’s love and devotion. I am happy to see so many postures from the Master Yoga Chart and that I am doing in classes today on the covers of magazines everywhere, and in the vocabulary of the young students of today. Most do not know where they came from, as many I named after saints. I see all postures as pure devotion, void of ego, just as love of God. You continue to teach class almost every day of the week, have done so for many years, and still always take the time to answer

questions at the conclusion of your classes both in New York and abroad. Have the questions and your answers changed over the years? It is my highest desire to help all aspirants make spiritual progress in this lifetime. Yoga teachings are so necessary in this period of time, when un-truths can be spread quickly to the public through all mass media forums. I continue to teach daily as I always have, helping practitioners from all walks of life, householders, office workers, dancers and gymnasts achieve physical prowess in asana practice. But my heart felt life mission is to give all the tools and understanding to know that Yoga is a divinely efficient set of techniques devoted to Self-realization that requires nothing, no mats, no props, no expensive clothes or costumes, just the body itself. Realized by the saints and sages of earlier times, I like to say “Yoga is a shortcut to immortality.” It is not a religion, but a science that if practiced correctly, will bring to the Sadhaka (practitioner) radiant health, and mental and psychic powers within a short time. These may then be used to achieve Selfrealization, the goal of all life.
Purpose: to deepen your practice Intention: joyful awareness Focus: mindfulness, Breath and postures
To be a good student, one must be reverent, have patience and make great efforts. I think maybe there is a little less reverence today and perhaps more interest in the physical aspects of the practice, but the questions are still the same, as people yearning to discover who and what they really are remains eternal. I try to be receptive to what the students ask and to what I think will help them to make progress based on my intuition and experience. I think it’s good sometimes to just do your meditation and keep asking the question. Then, all the answers come.

Yama and Niyama are the foundation of Yoga. Without them, there is no Yoga. To succeed in all aspects of life, much concentration is required. Increased ability to concentrate is a direct consequence of regular Sadhana (spiritual practice) in the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which then may be applied to discover answers to essential questions such as, “Who am I? What is beyond the mind? What is the cause of all pain and suffering? What is the greatest of all impurities?” and “How can I be free from pain and suffering?” The Classical Yoga System known as Astanga Yoga is divided into eight limbs or stages through which the body and mind are prepared, purified, and then surmounted. They are as follows:
Yama (The Ethical Rules) Niyama (The Observances) Asana (Postures; the Exercises) Pranayama (Control of the Vital Life-Force) Pratyahara (Control of the Senses) Dharana (Concentration) Dhyana (Concentration without Interruption; Meditation) Samadhi (Absorption with the Object or Subject of Contemplation; Bliss-Absolute) Yama and Niyama are the foundation, which lead one to success in meditation. Constant application of Yama and Niyama develops in the Sadhaka tools for healthy living and thinking. Ahimsa brings one compassion for all living being and creatures and therefore a clean vegetarian diet. Asana (posture) practice, combined with Bandhas (locks), Mudras (seals) and Kriyas (cleansing-techniques), brings radiant health and long life. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind, and only a mind which is calm and steady can achieve unbroken concentration (meditation). Pranayama (breath control practices) will purify the nerves, calm the mind and, consequently, allow the Sadhaka to take control of Prana (vital life-force) and the mind. With passion and emotions under control, success in meditation is surely in sight. Pratyahara is the ability to control the senses. Dharana is one of the results of Pranayama practice as concentration is heightened when the senses are controlled. With the practice of the previous steps, Dhyana (meditation) is easy to attain. Last is Samadhi, when the practitioner becomes completely absorbed in the object or subject of contemplation as the self rests and is completely absorbed in divine perception.
pizza in New York where there is a pizzeria on every street corner and the smell of the fresh pies follows you almost to the next shop. Balance is not easy to achieve under even the best of conditions, but one must make great efforts and renounce, renounce, renounce. If one can do that when constantly challenged, they are truly practicing Yoga. What is the purpose of Yoga? Well, as I mentioned before, Yoga is a shortcut to immortality. It is not a religion, but a science that if practiced correctly, will bring to the student radiant health, and mental and psychic powers within a short time. These may then be used to achieve Self-realization, the goal of all life. According to the Bhagavad-Gita, at the moment of creation, a portion of God became part of every living being; dwelling in the heart as the Real You. We each have this same Divine Light -the same hundred watt bulb, but for many this bulb is covered in layers of soot and grime and maybe only a couple watts shine through. Yoga is a system of ancient time tested and beautiful techniques designed to help us purify ourselves and calm our mind until the light can manifest full-force in us and we can see it clearly as the Supreme Self or God, the same as in everyone else. This takes time, of course, and it is great to have the help of someone in whom God already manifests a little more through than you. Don’t eat the flesh of animals, be kind to everyone, do your practice every day, renounce the fruit of all actions to the Almighty One and observe the fullness of Yama and Niyama. Of this my friends, I call Yoga. By doing these things, one will surely discover the purpose of Yoga. Much love to all, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantih Dharma Mittra South Okanagan Yoga Academy presents…

The Best of 50 Years of Dharma Yoga!
June 10-12, 2011 Friday 7pm to Sunday 12noon
at Naramata Centre, BC Spend the weekend with the creator of the Master Chart of 908 Postures!
You have a dictum on your website which says: “Reduce your wants and lead a happy and contented life.” How can we learn to balance our wants in an urban environment? For years I have always told my students that New York City is the best place to practice Yoga. I have had Dharma Yoga Centers in the nosiest of locales. If you live in a cave deep in the Himalayas, there may be few or no distractions, but you are not tested either. To practice Brahmacharya (celibacy) when there is no one else around it is not so hard, or to fast when you have nothing to eat. Or if you live in India often there is no means to make money, no work for millions, so becoming a Yogi may be necessary even. The temptations are very strong here in New York City. One has to try very hard to avoid eating

Sleep Deeply, Awaken Refreshed by Janis Goad
1: Modified shoulder stand
If you have trouble sleeping at night, look at what is causing stress in your life. Once we understand that we are not victims of life, we see that we are in charge of the choices that structure our situation and our response to what happens.
2: Supported fish
It is never too late to make changes that will make us happier. We alone are responsible for setting boundaries, controlling how we use our time, knowing our own life’s purpose and seeing that we fulfill it before we die. We can only find happiness within ourselves.
3: Seated side stretch
Sometimes our lives are out of balance because of our personal choices. In The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga, one of the master yoga teachers of the 20th century, Swami Vishnu-Devananda, taught that a balanced lifestyle includes 5 points:
4: Janu sirsana
Right exercise, including aerobic exercise and yoga postures Right diet, including reducing or eliminating toxins like caffeine, sugar, alcohol, chemical-laden food and meat Right relaxation, including conscious relaxation as well as sleep Right attitude and positive thinking, including meditation Right breathing, including yogic breathing or pranayama
5: Child pose
Life is a brief impermanent incandescence that faces us with opportunity to learn and grow. At the heart of every breath is a new beginning that beckons us to know who we really are.
6: Svasana
This flow of yoga postures before sleeping will help you quiet your mind, relax into deep restorative sleep and awaken refreshed. 1: Modified shoulder stand 2: Supported fish 3: Seated side stretch 4: Janu sirsana 5: Child pose 6: Svasana 7: Mental anuloma viloma (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

The Stress Connection Are you suffering from feelings of fatigue, unexplained cravings (especially for salt or sugar), poor sleep, low blood pressure, weakened immune system, low sex drive, inability to cope or a tendency to gain and inability to lose weight? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these symptoms, you could be dealing with adrenal fatigue. By Dr. Melissa Bradwell, ND
What are the Adrenals? Your adrenal glands are part of the endocrine system and are located directly on top of your kidneys. They are the glands that help our bodies regulate stress and are the producers of cortisol, our ‘stress hormone’. Along with producing cortisol, the adrenals are also responsible for controlling fluid regulation, initiating our ‘fight or flight’ reaction to acute stress, preventing osteoporosis, autoimmune disease and cardiovascular disease and maintaining normal sex hormone levels, including a healthy libido.
The Endocrine System The endocrine system is made up of a group of glands each with their own set of hormones that transfer information to other glands to coordinate the functions of different parts of the body. Different processes in the body that are affected include growth, metabolism, sexual development and function, adaptation to stress, mood and salt and water balance. Because the parts are so closely interconnected, any imbalance of one hormone in the endocrine system can easily affect the balance of others. This is why, in some cases, having symptoms of low thyroid function can exist in the presence of a ‘normal’ thyroid test.
The Damage of Stress
TH
INTEGRA T
In acute stress, the body responds by releasing cortisol to help the body cope with that stress. This is useful and healthy in the short term. Chronic, long-term stress, has the opposite effect: the adrenals try to maintain high levels of cortisol all the time and eventually they burn out. When the adrenals are unable to produce enough cortisol adrenal fatigue results. These low levels of cortisol lead to a decreased ability for the body to cope and function properly.
Stress Management Remember that good stress is still stress and that sometimes, life throws us some curveballs that can’t be avoided. Stress reducing techniques like getting adequate sleep, regular exercise and eating a healthy diet are all things that can help in those unexpected or more stressful situations. Certain vitamins and herbs are also beneficial in helping the body cope as certain nutrients are used up quicker in periods of stress and adaptogenic herbs are great at allowing the body to ‘adapt’ to stress with a more gentle effect on the body.
Melissa would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and best wishes for a 2011 full of love, laughter and good health. Dr. Melissa Bradwell, ND Full Naturopathic services: Acupuncture and IV Therapy 735 Victoria Street 250-374-9700 www.naturopathkamloops.com

The Strings of Projection “Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person unconsciously denies their own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, such as to the weather, or to other people. Thus, it involves imagining or projecting that others have those feelings...The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud.” -Wikipedia www.wikipedia.org
As human beings we use projection as a defence mechanism, but also as a point of objectification. We cannot watch ourselves from outside our heads, so to learn more about the way we act our subconscious projects images of our faults, dreams and desires onto other people. We can find ourselves despising a person we don’t even know because we actually secretly admire and yearn for what they have and who they show themselves to be. Or we can take a seemingly small attribute and stretch it into something awful that we believe is there, but is not. As a defence mechanism we project an image of fault on another to make ourselves believe that we are “better than them”, to deflect jealous feelings, or to avoid confrontation with our own digressive traits. But, in the end, projection has been a fundamental teacher through this stage of our evolution. It has main stayed our curiosity about who other people are and, therefore, who we are: the observer. We see ourselves through other people. Our main source of insecurity arises though fear of isolation. Our fears of being alone and unloved can be almost irreconcilable. We naturally want acceptance and to be part of a group, while at the same time keeping our individual identity intact. This leads to an inner turmoil because our ego finds itself in a constant battle with this natural progression. It struggles with the concept of unity consciousness. Ego is the sense of self, the personality. I am Teresa. You are Jane. Our ego’s wants to be individualised and to remain primary. It only wants to be a part of want it can control, and “we” is not a sense of control. So to gain a sense of control, we project our faults (that which we find digressive in character and thereby of lesser quality) on to those around us to observe it at a safe distance and then formulate an opinion. We feel so vulnerable when it comes to our digressive traits that it is easier to project these feelings and thoughts outward placing the ownership of these issues bound to the outside on another person, and not inside where they need to be confronted. This creates the illusion of boundaries when there is actually a deeper connectedness that we all share, with both our progressive and digressive traits. These projections can often take a negative spin with regard to the personality because we have blocked the ability to take responsibility for our faults. It is often brought forward unconsciously through the subconscious mind, showing up as a defence. We are literally projecting ourselves upon another. Then our ego state of mind decides those projected attributes negative and terms them undesirable. It can be so subtle that it only slightly bothers us on the surface or it can be so extreme that harsh judgments can manifest. For example a person with a fear of abandonment could project upon a friend or partner the idea that they will abandon them. Or, another person, angry at themselves for gaining extra weight may observe a person on the outside and accuse them of being too fat or too skinny. These are both issues
that are not the responsibility of the person of which the image has been projected, but is actually a deeper issue that the projector must confront within themselves. You may ask yourself; “how this can possibly be a learning tool? It seems so negative and destructive.” Projection can be a great teacher if you can become aware of it. You can witness and observe your emotional responses to understand more about what makes you react and why. Because, after all, you would only respond to that which strikes a tender place. It is important to be aware of your emotional body and what feelings arise. The purpose of our emotions is to bring us to greater awareness about what we need to learn to grow. So, you could ask yourself, “Why does this person irritate me? Do I do those things? Why is this making me react and feel these emotions? What is my emotional body trying to tell me?” And being honest with ourselves about the answers to these questions brings these tender areas to light to be healed. Many of our emotional responses we have go unnoticed or spiral out of control. We take the response as being the “truth” and react accordingly. But what we forget is that we filter what comes through our senses through the ego, and the ego can be very convincing as to its judgements. It is important to be mindful about the relationship we have with ourselves. The more insecurity we feel the more we refuse to observe the reactions of the emotional body because it feels very vulnerable. But it is openness to the truth and the sameness that connects us all. It is the experience of the human condition that shines with one simple universal desire: we all want to be loved – unconditionally. Teresa is currently working towards her Phd in Metaphysical Sciences and is a Kundalini Reiki Master. She is very blessed to have the honour of working beside two amazing women; Candi Lappin B.D. and Wendy Grono, sharing the teachings of the Crystalline Heart of Akasha. In this course Teresa endeavours to work with spiritual seekers on perspective awareness through The Language of the Ascension Arts and Vibratory Acceleration through Sound. Since moving to Kamloops from the Prairies in July 2010, she has found B.C. to hold the grace and the magic to support her on her own spiritual journey. Feel free to contact her at C.H.A@hotmail.com.

Moving Forward in 2011 By Cylynne Edgelow Abdullah
Collaboration can create change, change can create awareness, and awareness can create growth in our health and well-being. It is this belief that brought 3 creative and dynamic women together. Marsha Wilson of the Integrated Health Network, Meghan Drew of the North Shore YM/YWCA and Cylynne Edgelow Abdullah of BOND Therapeutics & Wellness share a passion of educating and empowering people to better manage their health and well-being. It is with this passion, expertise and dedication that they created the Moving Forward project.
scores, to create an understanding and awareness of the benefits of the self management strategies we will be teaching. The two classes offered will be Restorative Yoga and Gentle Yoga. These 90 minute once a week classes, starting in January, run for ten weeks at both YM/YWCA locations. We will teach the basics of body alignment, breathe work, yoga postures and meditation. The practise of restorative yoga creates a deeply rejuvenating experience for the body, mind, emotions and soul. The supportive postures allow for the relaxation of the muscles and tissues, a deep letting go that facilitates a ‘sweet calm’. These postures allow the innate inner knowledge of the body to restore balance and well-being. As restorative yoga focuses on aligning and relaxing the body in supportive postures, the benefits have proven to be both physical and emotional. The mind and body are connected and must work together for optimal health and well-being. When we make this state of balance our priority our self-esteem increases, empowering and encouraging us to be more self-reliant. Being self-directed, seeing ourselves as whole and complete, we tend to engage with the community in which we live and the world around us in healthy, productive ways. The Gentle Yoga class is an entry level class that will offer a safe and stimulating introduction to yoga postures while exploring the intimate connection between the body and mind.
Moving Forward is an opportunity for adults in the Kamloops area, who have or are at risk of developing a chronic health condition, such as diabetes, hypertension, depression or respiratory conditions, learn and practise strategies that will improve their overall health and wellbeing. For willing/interested participants, we will be collecting baseline data on depression, anxiety, weight, B/P and blood sugar (pre and post 10 week participation) as well as pre/post class stress/anxiety
Cylynne will be instructing all of the classes with support from the YM/YWCA staff. As a therapist, educator and BCRPA registered & certified Yoga fitness leader, Cylynne is passionate about empowering people in the facilitation of their own health and well-being. She has 30 years of experience working in health care, educating, encouraging and assisting in the rehabilitative journey of the mind and body. She has been facilitating yoga classes since 1995. It is a pleasure to partner with the YM/YWCA in offering the Gentle Yoga and Restorative Yoga classes. A Sense of Community By Kim Jensen
I've been writing and talking a lot lately about how all things are made of energy, including people. People are energy beings having a human experience. Or as Teilhard de Chardin (a French Geologist, Priest, and Philosopher who lived in the late 19th century and early 20th century) said “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” And for me, energy is spirit and spirit is energy. The idea that we are all made of energy also helps me to understand how we are all connected and interconnected in more ways than one sometimes. It also helps me to look for that "sense of community" in the relationships that I have and that I nurture. I joined the Let's Move Yoga and Dance Studio Wellness Centre community in the fall of this year. I had participated in the Wellness Fair during the summer and felt right away that this was a community I wanted to become a part of. I am still getting to know people in the Wellness Centre community but my experience so far has been very enjoyable and comfortable. It feels right for me, right now at this time in my life. I am also part of other communities such as: the Rotary community, specifically Kamloops North Rotary Club; the Sons of Norway community, specifically
the Heimdal Lodge #141 community; and the Sk'elep School of Excellence community, which includes the school community, the larger community of T'kemlups, and the even larger community of education in general, just to name a few. I also have my community of family, extended family, and close friends. I am very fortunate to be a part of all of these communities and to be actively involved in them as well. How active I am in any of these communities depends upon my role and function within them. Sometimes I'm a leader; sometimes I'm less involved, depending on my needs and the group's needs. Sometimes there's more of a connection, sometimes there's less. It is always what I need it to be for that moment in time. I have consciously chosen to be included in these communities and I always receive much more from each of them than I am able to give. In this world that we live in, it can be challenging to keep connected with the people that we care about and that we share interests with. We are always on the go and forget sometimes to stop and breathe, never mind spending some time alone or spending time, real focused time, with family and friends. Thank goodness for the winter sea-
son and too, winter solstice! When the weather gets cold it feels so natural to just slow down and to go inwards. It's a time for reflection, for introspection, to spend time with ourselves and those closest to us. It’s a time to remember what's important to us and to be grateful for our many blessings. Connecting to Mother Earth
By Therese Dorer
In our western society we are cut off from our roots, which connect us to the Earth energy. We expend our life force when we communicate on the telephone, email, texting or spend alot of time thinking. Many of us are so disconnected from our body that when we become annoyed, our body speaks to us through discomfort such as a head ache or other pain. We mask the pain with medication instead of listening to our bodies and pondering why these maladies have occurred. Our media creates messages to distract us from our wisdom which sits in the heart of our being. The heart has not forgotten that the Mother Earth provides us with the sustenance for life. This eternal Mother provides the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the homes we live in; survival is not possible without the benevolence of this grand Mother. With this in mind it is essential for our well being to support our heart by connecting to the Mother Earth energy. This can be done in many ways but the simplest way it is to move your body outside in nature. This may be walking, riding your bike, skiing, or just sitting upon the belly of the Mother for she will support and cleanse us as we take time to enjoy just being in nature. I encourage you to be curious about your relationship with this vast spirit of your first Mother. I am sure if we were to sit and have a conversation you could tell me of your love, fear, sadness, and laughter with your biological Mother. You would be able to tell me her name, what food she liked to eat, her voice and so much more. I would ask you to create an intimate relationship with your Mother Earth; she has so much to teach you about ebb and flow and how this can support your journey. The seasons are intended to support your journey so it is important to pay attention to the season you are in. 1. Winter is a time for quiet reflection, offering an opportunity to reflect and ponder and consider where you are going next. 2. The spring brings the promise of hope and new growth. It is a time to plant the seeds of your intention and breathe life into new beginnings that are all around you, filling yourself with life force that is so abundant at this time.
3. The summer is a wonderful teaching of the Mother Earth that the seeds we plant will come to fruition and we can trust in the universal energies to support our efforts. Revel in the warmth of Father Sun and take time to play upon your beautiful Mother. 4. Autumn can be a powerful time which reminds us to die to the old so that we can be reborn again, die to old habits, worries, doubts and fears. The cycles of the moon can support your journey on the earth as well. Full Moon is a time when it might serve you to do a ceremony of releasing the old patterns and habits so that you can go forward on your journey with clean and clear energy. The ceremony can be done with fire, candles and of course, your intention to release and let go of the old so that you can embrace the new. A ceremony you may want to embrace is to breathe all of your fears and worries out onto a stick and then burn this stick in a fire. The fire is a symbol of the sun, the light, so releasing your old stories and worries into the light will create levity for your being. Creating a candle ceremony begins by lighting a candle, taking some time to connect to the highest light, love and truth. When you are ready, set your intention and focus and blow the candle out. With this exhale of breath you are releasing all of your old fears and doubts. Picture the grasses that bend and sway in the wind. They are not brittle and inflexible. It is crucial at this time that you allow for flexibility and movement in your life; this is not the time for old positions or absolutes. The ceremony of release around the Full Moon will align you with thousands of other people who do ceremony at this time. These are just some suggestions to help to re connect you to our magnificent Mother Earth. As we go into the energy of 2011 this will ground us and support our journey forward. Submitted by Therese Dorer www.crystalclearinsights.ca 250-578-8437 I have been interested in the invisible realms since I began to meditate in 1993, the visions and wisdom that has unfolded for me has been intriguing and nurturing. Because of my own experiences I began to do intuitive readings for others, and love to offer workshops to encourage everyone to find their own path to wisdom. We all have intuition and like a muscle we can expand this and open ourselves to new awareness.

Illuminate Yourself By Lisa Woolner
Some Shocking Facts About Vitamin D and Sunlight For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by natural health and the body’s amazing ability to heal itself. This is why vitamin D has become my focus. Here I will share some of my illuminating findings. 1. Vitamin D is produced in the body when skin (free of clothing and sunscreen) is exposed to sunlight. The best source of vitamin D is natural sunlight; the second best is simulated sunlight (UVB light from a tanning bed or booth). The third and least effective is supplementation. Because the body was designed to create its own supply of vitamin D, there is never a risk of producing too much. The body self regulates and generates only what it needs! 2. Vitamin D sufficiency has emerged as one of the most important preventative factors in human health. Not only responsible for the formation of strong bones, every cell and major organ system in the body responds positively to vitamin D, and it is solely responsible for maintaining and repairing over 2000 of these cells! 3. Thousands of studies over the past 10 years show vitamin D to be the single most effective medicine against cancer, far out-pacing the benefits of any cancer drug known to modern medicine. Probably the most important but suppressed discovery of the last five years is that sufficient levels of vitamin D in the body could eliminate 4 out of 5 cancers, and reduce the risk of developing all cancers by 78%. The truth is suddenly becoming apparent: sunlight exposure could help to cure cancer! 4. Tanning as a single variable does not cause skin cancer! New research shows that poor diet (low in antioxidants and high in partially hydrogenated fatty acids like margarine and omega 6 fats) are more to blame for causing the free radicals that lead to the formation of cancer cells. In fact, sunlight combined with good nutrition leads to a reduction in all cancers, including melanoma. Most skin cancers are not dangerous, are easily treatable, and are rarely fatal. Malignant melanoma results in less than 1500 deaths a year in the US compared with 300,000 from the more common cancers. Why are we sacrificing the lives of so many based on the myth that sunlight causes skin cancer? 5. Sunscreen could be toxic to the body and our health. Even a low strength - SPF 8 - leads to a 97% reduction of vitamin D production in the body. In the late 1980’s,
the concept that the sun caused skin cancer was aggressively implemented by the pharmaceutical industry. The medical profession along with the cancer society visiously attacked tanning and sunlight, the life force of every living thing on the planet. As well, they strongly advocated the rampant use of sunscreen. This experiment created severe vitamin D deficiencies which has had devastating results to our health and health care system. It has resulted in huge profits for the pharmaceutical industry and many other industries that profit from illness. Until very recently, sunscreen only blocked UVB rays…the good rays that cause the production of vitamin D in the body and allowed dangerous UVA rays to filter through to your skin. This, coupled with the synthetic chemicals found in sunscreen, has been proven to increase cancer by virtue of their powerful free-radical generating properties. 6. Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial for calcium absorption. Without adequate levels of vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium, rendering calcium supplements useless. This leads to osteoporosis and many other bone conditions and diseases. 7. Vitamin D is linked to 80% less belly fat. Vitamin D promotes fat metabolism, helps to drain fat cells, and increases muscle strength. Recent science shows an amazing drop in dangerous belly fat in deficient women when adequate levels of vitamin D are reached. 8. Vitamin D boosts the immune system. It is a powerful natural antibiotic, and is crucial to activating the body’s immune defense systems. 9. People with darker skin pigment need 20 to 30 times more exposure to sunlight than fair skinned people to generate the same amount of vitamin D. Dark pigment acts as a natural sunscreen. 10. Studies show that 90% of North Americans are vitamin D deficient, with pregnant women falling in the severely deficient category. This predisposes their unborn children to a whole host of ailments including many autoimmune diseases like Type 1 Diabetes, MS arthritis. In addition. there now seems to be a strong link between vitamin D deficiency and the shocking rise in autism. 11. Thousands of studies over the past 10 years now attribute vitamin D deficiency as a major contributor
in the development of all cancers, heart and cardio vascular disease, autoimmune diseases specifically Type 1 Diabetes, MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Chrons and Colitis. It also greatly impacts cognitive function leading to depression, schizophrenia SAD’s, Alzheimer’s, and autism. Deficiencies also lead to significant increase in colds, flus and many other infectious conditions. This Is What You Should Do: (as recommended by Dr. John Cannell) If you use suntan beds or booths once a week or if you live in Florida and sunbathe once a week – do nothing. You will have adequate Vitamin D levels naturally. Otherwise, healthy children under the age of one should take 1,000 IU of Vitamin D per day. Children over the age of one should take 1,000 IU of Vitamin D per every 25 pounds of body weight per day. Adolescents and adults should take 5,000 IU of Vitamin D per day. After 2-3 months, have a 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test done. Adjust your dosage so your 25(OH)D level is in between 50 and 80 ng/ml (or 125-200 nmol/L) year round. These are conservative dosages. People who avoid the sun or have dark pigment will most likely have to increase their dosages. I hope you agree that Vitamin D is a very important topic. Please do your own research, as there are literally hundreds of books and scientifically sound articles on this fascinating subject. It is in my opinion that illness is big business, healthy people equal less profits, and it is for this reason I question the intelligence of accepting health advice from those industries and institutions that profit from us being sick. I hope you choose to seek your own truth, to live in the light, exercise, fill your body with good nutrition, breath deeply, feed your spirit, and expose your skin to the glorious sunlight! Adrenal Fatigue
By Tania McCartney
Slowing Down and Slowing Down the Stress Hormone
This time of year can be taxing on the body, mind and spirit. Maybe it is the stress of spending time with family, spending money, or the anxiety of hosting Christmas dinner for 25, but the holiday season can leave you drained. Add sleep deprivation, and holiday snacking to the equation and this can wreck havoc on the adrenal glands. These glands are like little berets that sit on top your kidneys, and they work hard! They are part of the endocrine system which is made up of several different glands throughout the body that secrete hormones into the blood stream which regulate many things such as growth, development, metabolism and mood. Amongst other hormones our adrenal glands pump out adrenalin, the fight or flight hormone. This hormone evolved as a way to cope with the stress of a lion attack!; they give us that burst of energy we need to react to stress and when functioning well will settle when the crisis is averted. However these days it can seem as though the crisis is never averted. It is our job as moms to keep the ball rolling and this low grade stress (relative to a lion attack) causes this hormone to keep pumping out. There are corresponding physiological reactions to this. The breath becomes shallow, the hip joints flex, the low back and belly seize, the shoulders tighten and neck extends. This instinct of

sprinting from a standstill or curling into a ball and protect the vital organs is no longer necessary, but there it is. This constant stimulation can cause adrenal fatigue which is essentially when the adrenal glands give up and go on strike. I moved to Kamloops from Toronto in October. The emotional and physical strain of moving our life and belongings, baby and cat, halfway across the country left me with a serious case of adrenal fatigue! These are my goto poses when I am exhausted. Nourishing myself physically and mentally as well as making time for variations of this practice helped me to feel a lot better. So I offer this sequence of yoga postures bringing attention to breath and the areas of the body affected when the adrenals are working overtime! Come to this practice thinking of it not as a prescription, but instead be curious about what you might discover enjoying some well deserved metime. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for this practice. 1. Relaxation – Spend a couple of minutes lying on your back with your legs bent, feet on the floor. Allow yourself to settle into the ground and bring your attention to any movement or sensation from the breath and belly. As you inhale the diaphragm contracts down and releases up as you exhale. The kidneys and adrenal glands are located toward the back of the body under the diaphragm, so as we allow the body to relax, the belly to soften, and breath more deeply, the adrenal glands, and all of the abdominal organs, are being massaged with every breath you take. Keep this in mind throughout your practice. 3 to 5 minutes. 2. Reclined Twist – On your back with your arms at shoulder height, draw the knees toward the chest and on an exhalation allow the knees to fall to one side, allow the head to fall in the opposite direction. Drop in the sense of moving like water and allow the legs to rest heavily before inhaling the legs back to centre. Exhale to the other side. You could continue this exercise flowing back and forth, or allow for several breaths on one side and then the other.Repeat 5-10 times (this is one of my favourite exercises – sometimes this is as far as I get!)

flow or spend several breaths in this backbend. As an image to use with this pose imagine the low spine as an airplane taking off, rather than the buttocks hoisting you up like a helicopter!
3. Cat Pose – Stack shoulders over wrists and hips over knees. Feel the ground under your palms. On an exhale drop the head and tail and draw the heart toward the ceiling. As you inhale tilt the tail up in the air and lengthen the back of the neck like a turtle coming out of its shell and melt the heart to the ground. Keep your attention on mid-back. The adrenal glands live around the bottom of the back ribs. If your wrists bother you, come down onto your forearms. Repeat 10 times 4. Pinwheel Pose – Sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together. If you find sitting upright on the floor challenging sit on a folded blanket. This is Butterfly Pose and the hips are externally rotated. Enjoy the stretch here for several breaths. From here with the knee bent, slowly turn the right leg internally so that your legs are making half of a pinwheel. If the hips are really tight, this may bring the right sitting bone off the ground. If this is uncomfortable you can sit that half of the bottom on the folded blanket. Then place your palms about 6 inches behind you, lean back and enjoy the stretch through the hips. Walk your hands back further for more stretch. Spend 30-60 seconds on one side before slowly bringing the right leg back to join the left. Change sides slowly and be attentive. Pain-free knees are healthy knees! 5. Dog Pose – Come back to hands and knees and bring your palms about 10 inches (you can play with this distance) from your knees. Allow the head to relax down and, curl the toes under. On an exhalation pour the weight back into the feet and use the strength of the legs to unfold bringing the pelvis up and back. If the heels are far off the ground you may want to place a folded blanket beneath the heels. Allow for 3 to 10 breaths here. Grounding through the feet slowly come back down to the floor. Repeat if you like. 6. Bridge Pose – Lie on your back, bend the knees and place the soles of the feet on the ground in front of you, not too close, not too far from your bottom. On an exhalation press through the soles of the feet allowing the spine to roll and lengthen off the ground. Inhale and as you exhale roll back down. You can continue this as a
7. Relaxation – Spend another 3 to 5 minutes in relaxation, continuing to observe the breath and sensation in the body.
On a final note, adrenal fatigue can have a big affect on metabolism, making belly weight more difficult to shed. While I have my own thoughts on my body, and body image in general, consider this the cherry on top, that working in a thoughtful, gentle way with the body, could possibly aid you toward other goals. Maybe even more pleasant than 100 crunches. VEGAN FOR BEGINNERS By Nicola Aichele
What is Vegan? Vegan is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes any animal foods (meat) and their by-products (eggs, dairy products - butter, cheese, milk, yogurt… and for some, honey as well). Many Vegans avoid foods that are processed using animal products such as refined sugar and some wines (using animal bone charcoal). Even supplements are labeled Vegan for those wishing to avoid animal-based capsules or fillers. Most Vegans also avoid the use of all products tested on animals, as well as animal-derived non-food products, such as leather, fur and wool.
A Vegan diet includes the following plant-based foods: fruits, vegetables, sea vegetables, legumes, nuts/seeds and their by-products (the butters, oils, milks, and yogurts created from them…), whole grains, pseudograins, herbs, micro-algae, cereal grasses, oils, natural sweeteners, and a few other nutritional additions (miso, apple cider vinegar, yerba mate…) Vegan foods are grown direct from the earth and are a primary-source food (grown for direct consumption) in contrast to animals that are raised for their food (meat) or their products (milk, eggs, cheese…) and consume primary-source foods, which humans then eat. A lot of energy and resources are used inefficiently and lost due to this extra step. Many Vegans are concerned about this and the impact we create due to our food choices – something not considered until recently.
Why Vegan? Following are some benefits derived from a wholesome Vegan diet: • Naturally cleanse and detoxify • Shed excess weight, support lean mass quality and tone skin • Improve bone density, hydration and cellular regeneration • Provide a natural anti-aging remedy • Decreases stress, tightness, and negativity • Improves moods, clarity, patience and sensitivity • Feel brighter, lighter, more intuitive, decisive and creative • Unhealthy cravings, addictions and depression are reduced • Overall health and immunity increases • There are significant reductions in: inflammation, chronic fatigue, cholesterol, acidity, IBS, behavioral dysfunctions…

While any diet philosophy can be healthy or unhealthy depending on our food selections and our body’s needs, the important keys are quality, balance, and appropriateness. Ideally, the diet consists of fresh, organic, unrefined whole foods prepared for optimum digestion and assimilation. This may be raw or cooked (properly).
Where To Begin? Start with The plant-based foods list mentioned earlier and explore one new food category each week for healthier whole food alternatives. Go to your local health food store, seek out a shopping tour, consult resources (health professionals and on-line research). Most importantly, familiarize yourself with fresh, organic, unrefined whole foods. If you stay away from the boxes, cans, preserved, processed, refined foods, you will make tremendous gains in nutrition and health. As a bonus, you will also naturally increase hydration by making this shift – fresh fruits and vegetables are 90% water, grains and legumes when cooked properly include 80% water. (Important to use clean, filtered water). Tune in to the next issue for recipes and more ideas to make a healthy transition towards more plantbased eating. See ad below for details.

Feel Good
Meditate
with the Crystal Bowls By Therese Laforge
At the full moon, the ocean waters rise and likewise, our bodily energies and fluids expand . The droning sounds of the bowls also press upon the density and invite further expansion. During a crystal bowl meditation when our bodies are relaxed, warm and safe, our spirit can fly. Afterwards, when the sounds and the room is back to nornal, we return to our everyday consciousness and go on with our lives. In the vedic traditions there is understanding of what happens internally at the level of the brain. Every practice of meditation is a form of brain repair. This is how, in simplistic terms, I am understanding it so far. The ventricles are nurturers and helpers to the brain just like the heart is to the body. Those ventricles contain the cerebrospinal fluid, the carrier of nutrients. The ventricles are fluid sacks and are capable also of neutralizing the ionic discharge from the brain. If we have too much neural activity because we are stressed or wired, the brain produces extra ions. Meditation and sound help the brain discharge the ions, detoxify it and help it come back into harmony. Once this is known, awareness can go to the ventricles to feel their work as detoxifiers and harmonizers while in meditation. And simultaneously building an intentional bridge to our heart center invites more harmonization of body and mind. Sounding the universal Ohm works perfectly as that sound is the natural sound of the human ventricles. It is ours for the doing, no props needed. We are made in a magical self repairing way!! Therese Laforge is the keeper of a set of seven crystal bowls. She loves to share the magic of their sounds here at Let's Move Studio on the Saturdays closest to the Full and New Moon.
BKS Iyengar Blesses Bikram Choudhury Mr B.K.S. Iyengar & Mr Bikram Choudhury In Puna, India, Summer 2010. This past summer Mr. Iyengar bestowed blessings on Bikram Choudhury, honoring his request to open a Bikram method school in Pune, India. Yogacharya B.K.S.Iyengar from India is a living legend who has taught yoga in unique way to all his students. He finds the meaning of the yoga sutras by his practical search and regular practice of yoga. Thus, he has helped all to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras. His style of teaching yoga is called "Iyengar Yoga" and is now being followed by certified teachers across the world. Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India™ with over 500 certified schools around the world. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began the practice of Hatha yoga at the age of four with India's most renowned physical culturist at that time, Bishnu Ghosh. As a young yogi in India, Bikram was 3 time undefeated in the annual All India Yoga Competition - Swami Shivinanda titled him "YogiRaj", and Mr Iyengar (as the senior judge), asked that Bikram not compete in future competition, but to demonstrate the physical possibilities of a Hatha Yoga practice.

Issue #18
GREAT EXPECTATIONS By Michelle Morrison
As we move into the new beginnings of 2011, we are entering into an exciting time of manifestation and creation. Right now is the perfect time to evaluate your expectations, which in turn support your manifestations and creations. What do you expect of yourself, what do you expect of others, what do you expect of your health and well being, what do you expect of your experiences? Do you expect others to behave in a certain way? To intuitively know what to do to make you happy, to comply with your own sense of right and wrong, or to do things the way you think they should be done? The fact is that we have no control over other people or circumstances, just as we have no control over the weather. We cannot depend upon others or the world to do exactly what we need in each moment. We must begin to define what we want our world to look like, the type of experiences we would like to have and the people that we have these experiences with. When you believe that someone or some circumstance is the cause of your distress, you are not allowing well being to be a part of your reality, nor are you allowing a positive outcome.
about being hard on yourself or beating yourself up for doing something wrong, this is simply a perfect opportunity to look at your expectations and guide yourself towards a place of well being and profound happiness. I would like to share some of my own personal expectations with you so that you may understand what I mean and then begin to define and cultivate your own. Great expectations come from the heart; they are kind, compassionate and loving. • I expect to love deeply and to be deeply loved and cherished. • I expect to give kindness and to experience kindness wherever I go. • I expect to be a peaceful being and to experience peace in my world. • I expect to experience passion, inspiration and creation each and every day. • I expect to grow change and expand and have ever expanding dreams and desires. • I expect success; I expect to move from success to success. • I expect to have an incredibly successful career. • I expect to spend my time with sweet, peaceful, kind, loving and extraordinary people each and every day. • I expect my life to be full of abundance. • I expect to be healthy, active, and vital, to honor and nurture my body with care and love.
Begin by understanding that the only thing that we have control over is our own thoughts. Each and every moment of our lives is guided by our thoughts and furthermore, our expectations. So if that is true, why not make our expectations great? Why not make our thoughts beautiful and joyous? With this mind set, we can begin to guide our expectations and then begin to experience the changes to our relationships and our circumstances that we desire. This is not
These are just some of my expectations and I encourage you to begin to define your own beautiful expectations. When you begin to be truly aware of these thoughts, to begin to replace old negative thought patterns with new positive expectations, you will find that the world is your mirror. What you put forward and what you expect is exactly what you will get. You begin to see your expectations as truths; they will in essence be-

come your reality. You will begin moving through and experiencing life from the sweet place of alignment. You will begin to feel less stress, unburdened, lighter, happier, kinder, and healthier. You will begin to experience life from a place of allowing and that is the most amazing place to be. So I invite you to begin a journal, or to make this practice a part of your current journal. As always, begin with gratitude, for all of the things in your life that you are grateful for. Once you are in a place of gratitude you can then move to a place of defining your own expectations. Allow these expectations to be defined from a place of love, compassion and kindness for yourself and for the world around you. You will immediately begin to notice a shift in your reality. You will immediately see a positive shift in your relationships, your circumstances, your health and your success. My wish for you is that you begin to reap the rewards from this new perspective and these new great expectations. May the coming year bring each of you everything you desire. Each of you are beautiful and amazing beings who have a beautiful light and great expectations to share. From my heart to yours, namaste! Michelle is an intuitive, providing intuitive readings based on a person’s energy, aura and their greatest potential. Connecting with animal totems, spirit guides and your personal energy, the reading gives you a great deal of information that is informative and productive. Using Usui Reiki and Shamanic healing, Michelle’s energetic healing is a gentle and beautiful way to help heal the body and transform negative energy. Feeling the warmth of the universe A Poem By Alexa Pongracz
Feeling the warmth of the universe is the last sense I have at night. It reaches out to envelope my husband, children, grandchildren. It paints pictures in the stars. It is neither gratitude nor ambition. It is a pure energy that has no name. I wait by the edge of an ever flowing river. I am part of the rocks that edge an ever moving water consciousness. I am bending like the grass that moves ever so slightly in the wind. I have fingers that ache for contact with the earth. I am part of this energy.

Doors & Silent Auction*: 6pm,
There is a man walking downtown. He is oblivious to traffic. With knuckles clenched and bared he pushes a shopping cart filled with black bags. I am part of this man. I am waiting for my welfare cheque. I have three children. I have applied for work at every store in town twice. There are rich people without children. I am rich with children. I go to school and life gets better. The man cashes in his bottles and has money to spend. Neither one of us will give up this business of living. I am part of this celebration. A 92 year old woman, very dear to me, says, “If I am living that is all I ask.” She is happy to be alive. Her knees hurt, the shots, three of them, will cost $500.00 and medical will not pay until six months to two years from now when she sees a specialist. The body wears out. I get tired at night. I go to bed at 8:30 pm and I wake at 5 am. Living is all that I ask. The river, the rocks, the universe, living is all that we ask. I am part of life. When life moves us we become more than what we are. Who is this echo that says we are more. Is it ourselves? When life prompts us to push a little harder, to enter into the flow, to remember we are all part of one initiative, do we hesitate? Each breath is a precious breath and our breath enters into the breath of others. We all feel breath, feel heartbeat, and feel blood like a river. And in each creature: I am life, I am cosmos; I am beauty. The Art of Healthy Living
By Angie Edgson
Ayurveda and Panchkarma in India I’m over here in India, to do some yoga and also to soak up the vibrations of the holy. Getting up at 5 to practice yoga in an unheated yoga hall gives “tapas” or discipline a whole new meaning. To boil water for my morning drink daily requires precarious positioning of the plug of my heating coil element within my adaptor which hangs loosely in the outlet of the wall. It only took one electric shocking to remember to wear my rubber flip flops when I make tea. Blue sparks aside, the water heats nicely once you find that sweet spot in the plug. As I huddle under two duvets and a large rug in my bed this morning after yoga class, waiting for the sun to crest the mountain, I reflect over the last few weeks. My mom came to India with me this time. The goal of her trip here was to explore Ayurveda, the ancient art and science of balancing and healing the body through completely natural means. Of course Ayurveda and yoga go hand in hand in Indian tradition and many people here still consult a doctor of Ayurveda instead of an allopathic doctor when facing a health crisis other than a broken bone or a laceration. Many Ayurvedic doctors here are also trained conventional physicians, so they carry the complete knowledge of both traditions. Our doctor is one such doctor. Dr. D.K.Srivastava was trained in Western medicine before becoming a doctor of Ayurveda. His knowledge of the body is complete and his command of the English language almost poetic. Assisted by his
wife, Navedita, he runs two clinics where he treats the general public and runs Panchkarma programs for foreigners primarily. Panchkarma means the 5 cleansing techniques. They are: abyanga: oil massage, shirodhara: continuous warm oil streamed onto third eye, sneha: oliation of the body, sweden: herbed steaming, and the last two are blood letting and vomiting. Don’t be scared. The latter are only employed in rare cases of absess or extreme illness and not general used. I know, that counts up to 6, but the sneha and sweden are somehow considered as one. (don’t ask me why, it’s India)
Ayurveda, the ancient art and science of balancing and healing the body through completely natural means. The whole treatment of panchkarma is a process whereby the body is cleansed and rejuvenated to a previous, more healthful level, sort of like when you restore your computer to a previous time, before everything started going haywire. Treatments can range from 10 days to 45, depending on the needs of the individual. Some with more serious ailments can benefit from longer programs that go deeper, while those with generally good health can sort of give themselves a yearly tune up with a shorter program. www.yogatreebc.com
Through the gentle process of Panchkarma, many people report feeling younger, more energetic and clear-headed and without the aches, pains and afflictions they started out with. It is especially beneficial for treating ailments of lifestyle and stress such as arthritis, back ache, headache, poor digestion, heart conditions, or skin disorders.... the list goes on and on. Next issue I will share our personal experience at the clinic during our panchkarma treatment. Angie has been teaching yoga for over 10 years and has been passionate about sharing it, ever since experiencing the life enhancing effects of regular practice. She is 500hr Yoga Alliance certified with specialization in yoga therapy. Travelling to Northern India periodically to go back to the "source" and update her training, she brings back the energy and authenticity of the traditional practices. Her classes are gentle and nurturing with an emphasis on safety and listening to your body's wisdom. We do a lot of energizing and cleansing breath work so bring a tissue! Angie is currently in India with her teacher Yogi Vishv-ketu of Rishikesh and will be rejoining our crew in June 2011. 31

Yoga to Beat the Winter Blues Are you feeling down around this time of year? Tired all the time? Do you find you really have to push yourself to exercise, get up in the morning and even make healthy eating choices? Like many, you may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a very real disorder which is caused by a lack of sunlight in the winter time. Canadians are especially prone to this disorder, because of how far we are from the equator and how little sunlight we get in the winter time. Often we are inside working all day, and do not get sunshine on our faces or bodies at all, and on many days during the winter time, the sun does not even shine. If you’ve read this far and are nodding your head, chances are this describes you. And chances are, if you knew just how to pull yourself out of this “funk”, you would, right? Well, there is hope.
it’s only 15 minutes, 3 times a week. Combined with all the other benefits of yoga (increased strength and flexibility, improved sleep, reduced stress, etc.), you may just see an improvement in how you feel. There may not be a lot of evidence to a finite link between yoga and SAD, but you don’t need it. As you start doing yoga, you may just be surprised at how wonderful it makes you feel. So, join a class in your neighbourhood, get a video, or even better, start up a corporate yoga class at your Kamloops workplace that you can do in under an hour, on your lunch break or after work. Approach your HR Manager today and discuss how you can make that happen.
Downward Facing Dog (Using Chair) Adho Mukha Svasana
Of course, we have all heard the typical suggestions around this time of year – make sure you are taking a Vitamin D supplement, get a light box and use it every day, even the simple suggestion of simply adopting a more positive attitude. People are trying to be helpful! And these suggestions are great. If you suffer from SAD, definitely look into all suggestions that come your way and explore which ones work for you. One very simple thing that you can do is to start doing yoga. Why yoga? Well, researchers don’t really understand the link yet between yoga and SAD, but they do know that yoga can make an incredible difference with general depression, so they are confident it will help with SAD too. Why do we get SAD anyway? Well, with the switch to shorter days, our bodies produce more melatonin and less serotonin. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for making us feel sleepy. It helps us go to bed at night. With the increase in hours of darkness, we simply make more of it. This explains why you might be feeling so tired these days. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for making us feel uplifted and happy. So with less melatonin and more serotonin, it’s no wonder we’re already looking forward to the bright, sunny days of spring and summer and grumbling our way through winter. It doesn't have to be this way. Although experts may not yet completely understand how yoga can improve mood in people with SAD, they suspect it does many things, such as raising the level of serotonin in the body. (Remember, serotonin is the "happy" neurotransmitter, and we typically have less of it during the darker days of winter.)
BENEFITS Stretches spine, back of legs, ribcage and more, relieves back tension, facilitates deeper breathing and more. INSTRUCTIONS Step 1: Remove your shoes and socks if possible. Stand behind your chair with your hands on the back of the chair, about shoulder width apart. Take a few steps backward with both feet until your legs are perpendicular to the floor and your back is straight. (Your back and legs will be at a 90 degree angle with other and you will be looking straight down at the floor.) Let your head relax. Step 2: Take a deep inhale, and as you exhale, press your hips and sitting bones back to the wall behind you. Pull your abdominal muscles in and feel your spine stretching and lengthening. Breathe. Step 3: Spread your fingers apart. Relax your shoulders and let them roll out and away from your ears. Step 4: Hold for 5 deep breaths if you can, then to release, walk your feet slowly forward and stand up straight. Release your arms down to your sides and stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose) for 3 breaths with your eyes closed. Breathe slowly and deeply, and enjoy how you feel.

THE TEACHER IS WITHIN:
INTUITION
I believe that most of us have been conditioned from an early age to think that “intuition” is a word that belongs in the supernatural and weird category.
vealed to me. If the message is not sillyseeming and if I obey, I am constantly blessed. If I do not act on it, I often regret that choice.
Science of Mind as well as many new thought philosophies teaches us to go within and trust who we truly are and then abide by the wisdom that is revealed. In my words “I trust my gut feelings”. If it feels right in that moment, I stop second-guessing my ”self” and act accordingly. There is nothing paranormal about following your own Spiritgiven good judgment. Remember the 60’s and the saying “If it feels good – do it”? Well they weren’t far off. We change it to: “If it feels right – do it”.
Guidelines for Visioning: First determine the focus for your visioning. Centre in Spirit and enter the silence – becoming aware of Spirit within. Know all answers come from The One. Open up to the vision by asking a question or questions and then trust the answer[s] will come. You may ‘hear’ your answers in a variety of ways: a feeling, a sound, a smell, a thought, a knowing, an image and even silence.
Some Suggested Questions
We have a tool now, that helps us polish up our intuition. It is called Visioning. It differs from ‘visualizing’ in that we aren’t picturing our desires (which is also a good tool).
(Always starting with # 1) 1. What is the Divine idea for this? 2. What are my gifts that could support this? 3. What must I release to be this vision? 4. What must I become to embody, become and live this vision? 5. What else do I need to know?
When we vision, we relax and go within and ask: ‘What does Spirit want for me?’ And then we listen. There are several other steps to this spiritual process but you can develop a much stronger and more effective Intuition with just this one step. I always write down what comes to me – even if it seems silly. And almost every time a connection is re-
It is all about choice. Do we choose to believe our old conditioning or do we choose to go within for guidance? Do we choose to follow that guidance or do we choose to second-guess it all and remain stuck in our superficial sludge?
By Lana Graham RScP
We all know the saying “Change your thinking, change your life”. Likewise, when we choose a new way – ‘Intuition’ offers a new choice. And that new choice is instinctively yours. Bartholomew said: “The teacher is within, so you have to learn to be still. You have to live your life, so that you are listening within no matter what you are doing.” We were created to express our own individual selves. Going-within helps us find the truth of who we are – Divine expressions of the One. And so it is Lana Graham, RScP, cslkamloops@gmail.com Centre for Spiritual Living, Kamloops. Lana Graham is president of the Board of Trustees, for the Centre for Spiritual Living Kamloops. She is also a Licensed Practitioner of Religious Science. She has been on her journey of New Thought Spirituality for many years now and has looked into many modalities for spiritual growth. She has always believed that Divine Energy, Spirit or God dwells within us and that we are all one. Lana has lived in Cultus Lake, Vancouver, Clinton, 100 Mile House and finally she is having a love affair with Kamloops. There's an energy in this city that resonates with her spiritual choices. Start Where You Are...
An exerpt from the talk: Everybody Loves Something By Ani Pema Chodron
Love and compassion are like the weak spots in the walls of ego. If we connect with even one moment of good heart and cherish it, our ability to open will gradually expand. The Buddhist term bodhicitta means completely open heart and mind. Citta is translated as heart or mind; bodhi means awake. The cultivation of the noble heart and mind of bodhicitta is a personal journey. The very life we have is our working basis; the very life we have is our journey to enlightenment. Enlightenment is not something we're going to achieve after we follow the instructions, and then get it right. In fact when it comes to awakening the heart and mind, you can't get it right... Bodhicitta is our means of tapping into this awakened energy and we can start by tapping into our emotions. We can start by connecting very directly with what we already have. Bodhicitta is particularly available to us when we feel good heart; when we feel gratitude,

have the capacity to soften us and to dissolve the barriers we put up between ourselves and others.
If we begin to acknowledge these moments and cherish them, if we begin to realize how precious they are, then no matter how fleeting and tiny this good heart may seem, it will gradually, at its own speed, expand. Our capacity to love is an unstoppable essence that when nurtured can expand without limit. Bodhicitta is also available in other emotionseven the hardest of feelings like rage, jealousy, envy and deep-rooted resentment.
Love and compassion are like the weak spots in the walls of ego. They are like a naturally occurring opening. And they are the opening we take. If we connect with even one moment of good heart or compassion and cherish it, our ability to open will gradually expand. Beginning to tune into even the minutest feelings of compassion or appreciation or gratitude softens us. It allows us to touch in with the noble heart of bodhicitta on the spot.
In even the most painful and crippling feelings, bodhicitta is available to us when we acknowledge them with an open mind and heart and realize how they are shared by all of uswhen we acknowledge that we are all in the same boat feeling the same pain. In the midst of the most profound misery, we can think of others just like ourselves and wish that we could all be free of suffering and the root of suffering. When we tune into any of our feelings, become aware any of our feelings, they

“I never knew fitness could be this fun!”
“I Am Grateful Every Day For My Decision To Sign Up.” “I originally signed up for Katrina’s Yoga Boot Camp with expectations of transformation – all physical, however.
Have fun, love life. Build muscle, burn fat. Get strong, get inspired. Become the woman you want to be. She already lives within you!
I wanted to be fitter, stronger, sexier, stretchier. I am finding that I have reached that goal, and obtained so much more! I feel amazing every morning, I am happier and more stress free. I am sleeping better. I feel transformation in my attitude, in my lifestyle, in who I am and how I look at the world. I am grateful every day for my decision to sign up. Thanks Katrina for being so amazing!” - Corrie Tucker
“I would recommend this opportunity to every woman I know.” “Yoga fitness boot camp has been an incredibly empowering experience for me. As hard as it is to wake up at 5:00 in the morning, the benefits are so worth it, as the rest of the day leaves you feeling amazing. Katrina has a very uplifting nature that positively encourages us all to move beyond our limits. The boot camp has a beautiful integration of fitness, core strengthening and cardio, combined with yoga, intention and relaxation. My body has changed considerably since beginning these workouts! I have noticed especially that my core is stronger, and that it’s much easier to get back on track and feel strong really quickly after taking a short break from any workouts. My body proves it’s getting stronger every time I do plank pose. The way Katrina weaves the alignment principles of Anusara Yoga into the fitness aspect of exercise is remarkable. The group energy of the workouts is fun, social, supportive and challenging. Thanks Katrina!” - Jen Larsen
