“I am an architect, a constructor of worlds, a sensualist who worships the flesh, the melody, a silhouette against the darkening sky.”

01 BEYOND THE LIVING MACHINE 2020-2021 Inividual Project Experimental 17 / Architectural Association, UK Tutors: Kyriaki Kasabalis & Mark E. Breeze

This research studio primarily uses film to reimagine how we live today and tomorrow. Technological transformations, migration pressures, soaring land costs, increasing environmental challenges, and most recently a global pandemic have fundamentally changed our relationship with shelter. While these everchanging conditions are affecting people far and near, their impact remains extremely local and idiosyncratic, signaling new modes of living, working, playing and connecting with each other. This housing proposal attempts to restructure the existing property market, and seeks a balance between standardisation and customisation of the notion of home. To embrace the onging consumer culture, domesticity is reduced to a single product. Using film as an experimental methdology, the new domestic scheme explores minimal dimensions and high density living in the urban context of London Kings Cross. The existing railway system of St Pancras station will be utilised as the primary experimental ground of the project. The mix of demographics and diverse housing needs will be met through a new era of digital and product-orientated agency.

02 DOMAIN GALLERIES 2018 / Inividual Academic Project BDES3027 Design Studio 3B / University of Sydney Tutor: Lachlan Seegers

Located near the boundary between Sydney’s CBD and the Domain park, the Galleries is a microvillage-like event space designed for the city’s public art, talks and events. Informed by Jorn Utzon’s design strategies, the Galleries is composed of various C-shaped units strategically placed onto a 2x2 metre grid system. Each module is designed to apply scale and direction its immediate spaces, determinating territory and boundaries, in a both physical and psychological level, to create intimacy between architecture and the body. This multi-layered event space will become a new cultural and social centre in the city, a transition from the hustle and bustle of the man-made towards a curated landscape.

Designated for events, festivals and performances, the proposal is a hard playground that lays foundation for flexible superstructures. At each event, temporary elements can be added to the site, promising tailored designs for functions of all sorts.

03 RWANDA CHAPEL June, 2019 / Competition Entry Young Architects Competition / Rwanda Chapel Partners: Jake Qin,Winston Liew

The village of Rukomo is situated in the remote uplands of Rwanda, a country still recovering from tragic events happened in the recent history. The new chapel for the local Clarian community and the nearby residents aims to provide a space for their daily prayers and gatherings, a place to reconcile and to forgive. The dispersal of the three spatial programmes allows visitors to venture deep into the lush landscape, through subtle changes in the ground slope, before entering the final pavilion. Like Moses exodus into God’s land, the chapel journey intends to heal and lead its people towards the divine.

04 BALMAIN BOAT-BUILDING AND SAILING SCHOOL 2017 / Inividual Academic Project BDES2027 Design Studio 2B / University of Sydney Tutors: Matthew Mindrup, Heather Cappie-Wood

Located in the historical site of Mort’s dry Dock (now Mort’s Bay Park), the boatbuilding and sailing school is orientated on the historical values of the harbour site - the once the infamous Mort’s Dock. The significance of the site’s archaeological remains inspired the design of the underwater acrylic tunnel through the dry dock, which exposes a past that is almost forgotten. A concrete walkway connecting the dock to the main school building enables a close experience to the constanly changing sea level of the site. The last phase of the design is constructed entirely out of treated timber for its tactility and lightness. Elevated from the surface of the water, the structure adapts to the position of the existing concrete piers. The overall scheme expresses the transition of time in space, through the juxtaposition of the past, present and the future.

05 SANCTURY BEACON September, 2021 / Competition Entry Beebreeders Architectural Competitions / NZ Romantic Cabin / Result: BB Student Award Partner: Jake Qin

Sanctuary Beacon is the jewel on the pristine land of Waitakaruru. A coincidentally simple geometry. A box of light. A space of nuanced pleasures. It is a design that revisits the idea of an open-plan-in-natural-scenery from the modernist architectures, such as Philip Johnson’s Glass House and Mies’ Farnsworth House, and channels their idealist notion of dwelling in nature with advanced technologies into a contemporary take on the human-nature relationship. At Sanctuary Beacon, one is not separated from nature with a harsh layer of glass, but offers an intricate set of experiences where nature is diffused, reframed, enhanced and muffled, bringing a true serenity to reconnect with the loved one.

MARKET OF LAND

SHEET MATERIAL

NEW ROMANTIC

The cabin form addresses itself as a happy marriage between a bespoke response to the foliage within the orientation of the building site and the simplest geometry, the triangle. Pointing 15 degrees east of North, the triangular shaped cabin opens diagonally towards the prime view of the Firth of Thames, engaging the immediate foliage to frame a view of the distant scenery. A soil platform raises the building above the canopy of existing trees, enabling almost panoramic outlook of the landscape.

The design at its foundation was to test the potential of advanced construction system of mass timber. Paired with light-weight cladding material of polycarbonate - also a sheet material solution - our scheme massively reduces cost of both time and budget, as most of the building structure can be prefabricated offsite while the on-site cladding work requires minimum labour. The absence of concrete and large glass glazing also contributes greatly to lifting the environmental burden such a building project inevitably brings. The carbon spending of cross-laminated timber (CLT) is much lower than that of steel-frame or glass achieving the same design output.

As the 19th century Romantic poets enjoyed journeys of wandering the wilderness, Sanctuary Beacon pronounces a program of contemporary reinterpretation. Visitors to the cabin are offered a temporal release from the crowded city, as in the density of population here is barely one person per acre. Hence, the design plays out openness to surrounding nature as well as limiting the expansiveness of the structure for a cosier enclosure, a bay of relaxation that warrants a sense of absolute safety to be enjoyed with the loved one. The landscape of the site is beautifully framed by the dining space windows while rest of the surroundings become a blurred light-painting, offering romantic seclusion with a hint of magical ambience.

06 BETWEEN WALLS March, 2022 / Competition Entry Young Architects Competition / Riyadh DreamVillas / Result:Third Prize Partners: Zekun Qin, PeiyaoYu,Weiqi Xie

The concept begins with the fundamentals of architecture - the making of shelter. Away from wind, heat, and storms, a home provides a sanctuary for human life within the formidable wilderness, especially in the Arabian desert. For centuries, people of the geographic region have developed an architectural tradition of building with unapologetic thickness and solidity to maneuver the transfer of heat. The proposal learns from these climatic responses and seeks to celebrate the bravery of living inside the lifeless territory through a strong architectural language following a tight grid. The monumentality and mathematical precision of the parallel walls manifest the inconceivable act of resilience in choosing to inhabit the uninhabitable.
