ABOUT ME Believing in design as impactful as music, I am dedicated to design with enthusiasm. A keen learner to embrace knowledges in all aspects of architecture, design and art. I am a person with strong learning desire, comprehension and critical ability. My obsession with architecture pushes me to hold greater motivation to explore the unknown. [REGENERATION UNDER REGULATION] A Bazaar For Craftsmen Living Beside Mao's Monument Individual Work Site: Guangzhou October 2020 A protective historical area is usually limited by numerous conservation regulation, especially where Chairman Mao had stayed before. But it is a pity if we put aside the vitality of the handicrafts living in here, which is also protective heritage. Therefore, the idea of creating a bazaar for them under the shadow of Mao came into my mind.

"Fa-lang" is one of the traditional handiwork of Guangzhou, which is also the intangible cultural heritage. Inspiring by the making of "Fa-lang", there are six elements extracted from the whole process.

"Qi-lou" means arcaded streets. It is the most common architecural form of the bazaar in Guangzhou, which have already became a memory of all the people lived in here.

Protective Historical Buildings Commercial Streets for craftsmen Art School

Site

The site was used to be the living and working place for Mao and his followers who were also the senators of the Communist Party in the 1920s. Until today, the whole place becomes a protective historical area with a series of constructional prohibition. But some craftsmen also earn a living between those buildings. The front of "Qi-lou" buildings are thin and tall. But if you look inside, it is totally differed from the outside with various space form.

Structure

The Mixture of the Handcraft & Builidngs' Elements

T h e s t r u c t u re i s f o l d e d t o create space underneath, also give path to connect with the underground.

The "Origami" structure on the ground aims to be a fake wall which is required by the rules of the protective historical area.

Under the Origami, following the spiral stairs is the bazaar for the handicraftmen and the visitors. The studios of the workers are behind the bazaar. The whole design is aiming to activate the space under control by rules through those handicraftmen living in here, by providing spaces for working and selling.


Crafts The three structures together provide spaces for exhibition or holding conference.

Qi-lou Several units of Qi-lou buildings compose an arcaded street.

Qi-lou The "Qi-lou" buildings are designed to be a three-dimensional street.

Qi-lou The elements of traditional Guangzhou's architecture are combined.

Qi-lou T h e re a re m u l t i p l e spaces providing for commercial use.

Workshops The workshops for the handicraf tsmen wrap the bazaar with industrial style.

Qi-lou Empty streets is for the dealers to open itinerant shops.

Crafts The spiral and the circle are the communication between ground, bazaar and workshops.

Workshops In the workshops, There are pipes for the workers to communicate with the outside.

The streets are aimed to create communication between selling and crafting. There are multiple activities that can be held on the streets.

The hold design is underneath a gigantic structure that can connect with the ground. Creating spaces inside and outside, it also protects the workers from the exist of Mao's spirit.

[STREET BETWEEN CAMPUS & CITY] A College Students Exchange Center On the Edge Of The Campus Individual Work Instructor: Jia Hai, Xuhong Liu, Ya Wang Site: Guangzhou July 2019 TOP 100 – Asian Architecture Newcomers Competition China Division (2019) The building was designed for an art school, containing students majoring in such as industrial design and architecture. It is a school located in the centre of a metropolis, which is interesting for me to cooperate the interaction between the city and school. Also, the design should meet all the requires of the current trend of design study.

The concession for the city and the nearby maker buildings creates three groups of open platforms, each of which are accounted for several functions. All of them are designed for stimulating users and the adjacent.

Reference to the Fun Palace, this project is my trying to build a space where people in the community could come together to celebrate arts, science and culture. Above all of that, I want to build a city with different types of streets inside the building.

The sunk square is prepared for the playground opening for both the faculties and the citizens, as well as the makers nearby it. People gather through the sunk square, experiencing the mixture of city and the buildings through the upward spirals in it.

The main users of the building including three categories: the citizens who want to relax or exercise, the workers from the nearby office buildings, teachers and students from the school. The building interacts with all the elements in different ways.

Two pilotis strengthen the air circulation and ventilation for the building which is located in a Subtropical city. Also, it provides a better vision for the communication between the city and the school. There are two main functions that are set in the pilotis, which are sports and reading areas.

Social Opacity With the uprising of stairs, the extent of privacy keeps increasing, with that most of the activities engaging by the public, students and workers are set in the lower levels of the building. also, the frequency of the usage of functions is dropping when going upstairs.

The Level of Acquaintancy Most of the outdoor activities and semi-outdoor activities are replaced by indoor activities in the high levels of the building, with the changing of "passive contacts" to "close friendships", which describes how familiar the people you have contacted in the building. Also, there are two types of activities which are defined as necessary and optional designed according to the height.

[SPECTATOR] A Theater Space For Immersive Theatre Individual Work Site: Guangzhou February 2020 Immersive theatre is an emerging type of drama, whose spaces designed for performers and audiences can be imaginable. A movie is a show where the perspectives of audiences are limited by the director, which is exactly the kind of space I have interest in for a new drama type. In my design, the audiences also perform a show for the pedestrians, they are all spectators.

Camera track is the basic movement of movie shooting, following the changing of camera focal length, from wide angle to longfocus, the result of the pictures will be different.

The concept was originally inspired by the movie "Rashomon", which tells one story from three different angles by three people. In the view of the audience, they are three stories. It was all about the consideration of the spectator.

"Rashomon" requires the audiences to combine three stories into one. Same as the immersive theatre, if the audiences want to piture the whole story, they need to explore several time and put all the pieces of the puzzle together by themselves.

There are several types of typical camera motions and focal length. Both of them are related to the path and view of the audiences, deciding how they observe or engage in the stories.

Camera Track Guidance

When the criterions and the scenario above intereacts, the theater sapce including performing space and the path of watching is settled. The whole process is three-dimensional.

This is the scene when the audiences follow the perfomers from the "comedy" level to the "tragicomedy" level. The space will turn dark and become intricate.

When go back to the "Comedy" level, it will be bright and open. The audiences can see through what happened downstairs.

Techique Study Technique 1 Pinching: Living by fishing and sea transport, Guangzhou people religiously worship the symbol of water.

Gu Lu Liang Luo Chen Xian Xian village was formed since the Song dynasty( 960–1127) in Guangzhou when the idea of clan was developed, strengthening by the construction of each clan's temple. By now, the status of the temples declined due to the rising of the new business area.

Technique 2 Carving: extracted from the snake, the prototype is usually worshiped by Guangzhou people.

Technique 3 Texturing: extracted from the fish, the fish's scales became one of the prototype.

Technique 4 Peeling: The prototype was extracted from the shape of dragon-boat roof ridge.
