TEA, SUNLIGHT, WIND, & TIME
The project “tea maker’s guest house” initiated with three thoughts, what could generate a pleasure time in the tea maker’s guest house? Which environmental elements could make the quality of time in the space? How and what design elements affect people revisit the guest house when people leave. To answer these questions, I belived the tea making process has a key. To make a high quality of tea, the herb/tea need the best quality of light, wind, and time. Herb and tea should have sufficient sunlight with different quality of light. Wind also important element for proper growth of herbs and tea. Lastly, tea is differentiated by time, like new tea, rested tea, and aged tea. From the site level, the design maintained the original orientation not only because of keeping the existed stone structure and minimized work(only added 4 parking spots) for landscaping but also the orientation has a great potential to separate the spatial programs (private, semiprivate, semi-public, and public space) and maximize the view, and wind. Additionally, this project focused on providing different types of spaces to support different types of individual’s relationship, such as Eco-centered space, the space are for one to one relationship, and space for a large group. These program concepts are supported by what people see and what people will feel in the house.

This project is the third of Bosch's IWC(Inspiring Working Conditions) office in South Korea. My team, Keumkang participated in the design competition with other two firms to create this Flexible Seating concept workspace design. I, myself roled as a team leader for the competition. I developed the concept of the space. My team suggested WELLNESS concept for this IWC office. The result, we won the competition.
After my team won the design competition, Keumkang also won the bid for the construction. During the construction process, I supported the construction team for the construction administration process and any additional shop drawings. In the process, I directly communicated with the clients to confirm the final design, finishes, furniture and millwork details. The total experience is the great impact on my design thinking process. Moreover, I realized the details of the construction process in South Korea is different from the process in the U.S. for instance, process of drawing permission, formation of Contract Document sets, Construction Administration process, bidding process, and building completion publication. Keumkang received a positive feedback from the users and Bosch promised they will use Keumkang's documents as their office design guideline for the future IWC projects.

This challenging project started with three goals and the solutions to achieve the goals.
First of all, 29CM, a hot on-line collect shop want to launch their first off-line flag shop within HANA bank, a progressive financial firm. Before this plan, HANA bank occupied in this hot place in Seoul, Kangnam. In order to attract the main target of the area, late 20's to late 30's, the bank invited 29CM to share their space. Keumkang proposed shared lounge and multi screens for both. The design concept is as same and as different. We intended to use monochrome as the major color of the space and use point colors for their identifications.
Second, We want to bring more people into the space. The location of retail shop is the start and end point of Kangnam Station. Lots of people pass by the shop and use the place, in front of the shop, as a meeting point to go with their friends and acquaintances. We considered the ways lead more people to the space and make a place as their lounge. In our first proposal, we used color of the lighting to lead the people. But the client want the space shell be cozy and no barrier to enter, thus we used low intensity of illumination for the shared lounge. Additionally, we proposed new signages.
Third, the owner of the building has a very stubborn opinion regarding of building facade. So, we wanted to reuse the main entry and even to restore the design of the rose window with a contemporary design solution.
I worked as a main designer of the project in early stage. I planed the test fits and the schematic design phase.

SEOUNGSU MULTICULTURAL SPACE
This project was 12 levels of multi-purpose space. There are a theater, a gallery, a training room, fitness, staff dining room, a cafe, a bakery, offices, restaurants, and so on. The System Lab designed the envelope and landscape, Keumkang developed the core and major interior space. As a team member of the project, I developed the interior concept and the restrooms. There are two different spatial uses. One is a cultural space on the lower levels (B2 to 3F). The other is an office space on the higher levels (4F to 10F). Because of the local colors of the space. Seuongsu, in the past, this area was developed as a center of the industrial area on northern-east of Seoul. Thus, my team wants to
render industrial (factor-like) atmosphere. We specified various types of pipes for the mechanical uses, lighting purposes, and even door knobs.
One challenge of the project was there was an unlimited budget for the interior design in the beginning. Which means the designer can express the concept as best as the design can in the most elegant way possible. But the client kept reducing the total budget in the end.

Keumkang participated this TE seoul office relocation design bid project. I, as a design advisor, take a role to create the concept of the new space. We called "CONNECTING GLOW" as the conceptual image of the new TE office based on our research about TE's history, the brand, and the direction of today's TE. It is a continuous design language with TE’s logo the Steaks of Dynamism, but we added the image of orange light to reach your brand power farther. Additionally, our team’s goal is to create a connection between users and the space through the glow. Keumkang not only selected the images that high-tech industries but also, we picked low-tech images such as the image of wood and landscape because TE has the goal of sustainable and connecting past and future.

Chicago Big Red Food Hall design proposal initiated with continuing the lobby design that HOK is developing for the building. The CNA center is 44 story building located at 333 S. Wabash Avenue in the Loop area of Chicago.
HOK as one of the food hall user of the building, this place wish to be unique dining opportunities that go beyond lunch, a third place to work outside of the office for the professionals who work in the building, provide areas to study, work and hang out with students near the building, a new place to visit in the city for visitors and to be provide destination experiences for everybody. My watercolor sketches were utilized as the previews of HOK design as a marketing tool. Tom, as the director of the interior design, he leads the project direction, and Pam and I proposed the interior design details.
Although this design proposal couldn't procedure further, it was a great experience to observe how the interior design team and the marketing team coordinate together and what media would be the most efficient way to convey the design ideas to the client.

Renovation plan of Stahl house LUXURY NOMAD
This project starts with my assumption of future living. In 2060, although our technology is improving evolutionarily and our society is moving constantly, our way of life will not be changed a lot. We will still miss our real nature, smell of people, and memories of our spaces. In the past, we just lived in a place almost permanently. Now, we can move if we want, but we constantly rebuild our living places when we move. In the future, interior space will move around with occupant. In this project, the whole interior space can be moved when the future client wants to move other places with the magnetic wooden blocks. The construction of the original stalh house should be preserved due to the client’s job which is a real estate agent. She will want to keep the value of the house for reselling. Exterior view from the outside. For the preservation, the exterior structure remains. It won’t be affected by the occupant. Here, I fill in the interior, and set up the pavilion. As shown below, I use wood with high technology although the material traditionally considered the technology of the past. While the existed Steel and glass, it seems represent modern technology, it are actually product of the past. I thought paradoxically.

Within the design I chose represent the past, present, and future.
Straight lines and curves coexists over the present space. The straight lines represent the existed building structure which is the past, yet the curves indicate the technology of the future. The wood contain both straight lines and the curves as the meaning of coexistence. I chose the material in the character of a bridge to connect through the time as well as link the structure to the city grid below

ENTRANCE - To recall the original design I reset the concrete fence, made famous by the iconic Julius Shulman’s photograph, and added vertical wooden blocks to providing additional security and rhythmical balance. I also added an access of entry allowing guests the ability to enter the house without moving through private space, a flaw of the original design.
KITCHEN - When the client enters the building, she can directly approach this kitchen. As she dwells the space immediately feels the visual progression of the interior space to the transition space and to the city beyond by the lighting.
HOME OFFICE - The client can use her media wall to communicate with co-workers, as well as she would enjoy the view of downtown. The fence can block the view from the neighbor below.
LIVING ROOM - The lighting fixture can change color to create different atmospheres. It is interactive to reflect the feeling of the users. This media wall has two feet of depth, it will share the back side of the home office.
PAVILION GARDEN - This garden is filled with three natural elements: The shaded sunshine from the wooden pavilion, Plants on the garden that exists over the original pool, and the water from the wading pool.
DINING AREA (interior view) - For the use of natural light during daytime, I set up the skylight. The lighting fixture filters the strong LA daylight, and the absorbed lighting source will produce lighting during night time.
DINING AREA (Exterior view) - This area can be changed if she wants to have a dinner in or out-side of the house. The geothermal energy would be utilized by reuse the existing big pool. It can help air circulates for the temperature control.
MASTER BEDROOM - This master bedroom is located the south edge of the site. The beautiful scenery of Los Angeles serves as a gift to the client every morning. The drapes block the sun while converting its energy for the house use.
NIGHT VIEW (from the garden) - This view is a retrospection of the famous photograph by Julius Shulman.

Surrounded by various building styles, our site is located in the conjunction. Various buildings of different functions set up a complicated challenge to connect them into a healthcare community while at the same time to open up the view to the campus on the east side. Located at the traffic intersection, this critical site condition reminds us to consider how to rebind fragmentary healing gardens separated by the lanes and merge this group of healthcare buildings into the green space of University of Iowa campus and urban environment. Based on the requirements of connecting the existing hospital with the parking facility through our tower, we separate different circulation. By lifting up a second pedestrian garden level, we reconnect the our healing garden with the children’s healing garden while ensuring a convenient driving loop on the ground level.
• Vertical Strategy - Connecting three hospitals by vertical healing gardens together with separated circulation system
• Horizontal Strategy - maximize public space by reshaping shared space between 2 patient towers
• Volume Strategy - Twisting the building to open up the view for both our tower and the children’s hospital

COMBAT OUT-POSTS Design proposal in Afghanistan
In this project, I am aiming to re-proposing of the interior design of combat outpost within modernity. The people in a current combat outpost still use a design vocabulary from the second Word War that is almost 70 years old. The result of the poor conditioned design of a combat outpost cannot support their life not only during their deployments, but also when they are back to their home in the United State. The re-proposal initiated with analyzing the problems of the current combat facilities. First, the buildings, or the spaces are mainly constituted with temporary structures. It could make them feel unsafe, and also permanent structures like T-Walls were shown as scars. Second, the boundary of the spaces such as working, social, and personal in the current combat outpost. It might influence the soldiers increasing their stress levels for the pressure. Third, soldiers commonly feel high pressure from outside enemies. These three big problems are the main driving force of the proposal of this project.

This project a part of 2015 summer internship at OPN architects. I was in charge of designing interior space for the additional courtyard. The Pappajohn Business Building houses the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Completed in 1994.
The building embodies the style of the Pentacrest structures with its use of aggregate stone and is a modern twist on the turn-of-the century buildings found at the heart of campus. Its style is also reminiscent of financial institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange and its use of a “money-green” paint scheme reinforces its financial focus.
A main purpose of the courtyard is to make additional community zone, a dining area, and diverting the main access because the previous plan has a big problem of traffic between class break.
The team, one project manager, one architect and I concentrated on the courtyard. The architect focus more on the envelop of the building like the curtain walls, constructions, base, and access from outside. I planed the layout of the furniture, interior lighting concept and layout, finishes of floor, walls and so on.

The remodeling plan for the immigrant center is part of a design project, ‘A Study on Design Characteristics of Public-Regeneration- Architecture in Architecture for Humanity.’
The project started in March 2010 with the Sarang Maeul Immigration Center located in Changdae Market in Incheon in S.korea. This immigration center is founded with a view to a church-based protection of immigrants and education for multi-cultural families. By applying the methodology suggested by the Architecture for Humanity, a design group that practices humanity through architecture, the gap between the designer and users could be narrowed through a design centering on architectural process and interior as opposed to the modern design prioritizing exterior.
Currently, resident immigrants in Korea account for 2.2% of the population, but general attitude toward them is still cold. We should accept their cultural diversity and harmonize with them, In which sense, the Sarang Maeul Immigration Center will be able to build bridges between immigrants and local residents through the grass-root movement of the non-profit organization. The Sarang Maeul Immigration Center is located on the 2nd floor of a commercial building in
Changdae Market
the Changdae Market. There are 8 buildings in the market that had been a traditional market for residents around Mansu 4 dong before large-scale modern discount stores showed up to diminish its market share. As a response to this trend, Namdong Office and the Merchants’ Club in the market have sought for measures to activate the market such as installing the rain-proof arcades.
As a psychological shelter and living space for immigrants in the market, the center seems to contribute to communication between immigrants and local merchants, who sell products for immigrants.

The project’s design concept is to make and share the space with users. For this, the design process is applied with design cooperation and the spatial program with locality. Further, sustainability is expressed with the environmental system, materials and colors for the space so that users and the center will activate the local market and make the space more sustainable. Such design process, spatial program, system, materials and colors as spatial components are designed to voice diversity for adding values and harmony like a collage.
Specifically, the project’s design cooperation is represented by participation of the designer, users, local residents and nonprofit organizations in the process. The head of the center, reverend Kim Choel Soo, the staff and immigrants were interviewed to identify any problems in relation to spatial program and its use. Also, immigrants went through a questionnaire survey, which data were led to understand and apply their culture to the design. In addition, existing cooperative programs were properly used to sustain the design cooperation.
To express locality, the existing spatial program was inserted into the marketplace program, or specifically, into its central garden, to build a place of communication between immigrants, between residents and between residents and immigrants.

The central garden will act as a yard for immigrant children on weekdays, while it becomes a place to reveal diverse food cultures, cooking and selling foods from diverse countries. Ingredients for food sold here are bought in the Changde Market on the first floor so that people can cook such foods for themselves at home. Profits from sales of food ingredients will be used to maintain and manage the center.
In terms of environmental sustainability, environment-friendly rooftop fields are applied with the solar heat system for efficient heating and cooling. The roof is lifted up by 60cm for easier natural lighting and ventilation. The part of the roof receiving the sunlight is tilted by 10 degrees so that rain water can be collected and used for the rooftop fields and toilets. Regarding the structure, existing columns, girders and slabs are maximally used to reduce the cost for construction. For design sustainability, existing ‘U-shaped’ mass and columns as well as girders of concrete structures are reused to save construction cost and to maintain surrounding local context. Further, volunteers in art college students and immigrant kids are led to decorate the walls on the first floor for a design that is made along with the local community.
For this, design cooperation on the design process and design outcomes such as locality, environmental sustainability and design sustainability are pursued in the practical design.

LOBBY
Such as the BARK GROWTH
This is an Open Library project in front of Seoul-si Jongmyo Park. It becomes passages space between the road and the park that psychologically connects the senior citizens who are the major users of the park, younger people who use the road, and foreigners who visit the shrine.
In order to create sustainable space, one must be act using awareness as the foundation.
Awareness is reflection of growing human behavior to an object and tries to limit the growth of program in the space and space users. To achieve the growth, one must accumulate and wait, extract the motive from the bark that contains the concept of patience, and used the meaning of the bark in the form it grew as the design vocabulary.
The depth of the bark can be extracted into three stages. Following that, extract the meaning behind the power of the tree growth of the interface and the form was constructed using the method of substituting the direction of the force to transform the space into design elements.

The scale of the space was the road 9m, park 9m, 36m including 5 trees was 12m of height of trees was calculated; with the scope that 1st floor will not interfere with the passage of people, program was inserted into the flexible space. In case of 2nd floor, it was composed of fixed space where you can collect people.
1st floor composition is flexible based on the time-based activity and maintain the existing street vendors and bus stops and opened up the closed fences that the existing park and road had. It can be used as an outside library; Composed of programs that while waiting for the bus, read the newspaper, one may gather information or books and in case of the shape, the design was formed in the shape of biomass and similarly in form of words.
The composition of the inside on the second floor is the connected structure for three gateways. Individual users get together for chat and watching movies and for Korean chess and Baduk and read a book freely and also on the each side there are reading rooms for groups and individuals that externally-oriented designed. Design vocabulary ties to express the sustainability of the place and the mixed strong and direct and symbolic expression that the skin of trees has.
