MOTIVATION DILIGENCE VISION

Minji Jung -- Year:14

Student Spotlight ‐ Interview with Minji Jung ‐ Why did you choose Bio-Convergence as your major? When I was in high school, someone who was very meaningful to me passed away due to a severe illness. It was really mortifying because there was nothing I could do to prevent that miserable situation from happening. Meanwhile, I was taking general biology and AP biology classes, a topic I really enjoyed studying. In retrospect, I think these two situations converging catalyzed my passion for biology and my dream of saving other people from deadly illnesses. It is fair to say that I had already decided to pursue Bio-Convergence before I even came to Yonsei University.

How has coming to Yonsei helped you get closer to your dream? I am really grateful to have had many opportunities to engage in laboratory experiments with helpful and talented professors. Even if you are not the kind of person who has yet to have been exposed to a laboratory environment, the professors here are out there to help you and they are willing to teach you from the very basics like how to properly pipette, to more complex tasks such as how to deal with cell cultures in order to successfully incubate different organisms and cells. I personally learned a lot not only in terms of factual knowledge, but also from the practical skills I gained in the laboratory, which will ultimately allow me in the future to proficiently conduct and carry out experiments of my own.

Is there any advice you wish to give to the underclassmen? Ask for help when you need it. The 14s were the first students of this major, so at the beginning we faced a lot of difficulties. Thankfully, we were able to settle some confusing and difficult issues due to the contributions made by the professors, students, and university administration staff members. But change only happened because we asked for help. Once we did, there were so many people who were eager to help us to overcome these obstacles. Also, engage in as many diverse areas as you can. Not only club activities, but also study different subjects that may not be blatantly related to your interests or major. I have taken STP and IID classes, and although I could have taken science classes that is directly relevant to my major, I do not regret taking them because those classes allowed me to become a better, well-rounded person.

What are your future plans? I was planning on interning this semester, but I was not able to due to the limited space and because the period for the internship did not fit my schedule. However, I am grateful to have been provided with a new opportunity to work as a research intern at Professor Jungmin Han’s 3D cell printing laboratory. I am looking forward to engaging in a state-of-the-art research field that has great potential to become a major sector within the biotechnology industry. After graduation, I am planning to apply to graduate schools in the United States to study pharmacology and cancer metabolism. After I obtain my PhD degree, I want to work in an environment in which I can freely conduct my own research.

Ex Machina “Artificial intelligence comes at a price, like everything else.”-Jacob Martin With the recent rise in interest regarding artificial intelligence, due to the success of Alpha Go, this 2015 film seems appropriate to revisit. The title Ex Machina originates from the latin phrase, Deus ex machina, meaning god from the machine. From the meaningful title to the visualization of the creation and integration of an advanced form of artificial intelligence into society, this film forces us to confront deep, philosophical questions: Are we playing God by creating something that can formulate its own thoughts and have free will? What will separate them from us?

The Revenge of the

x Chromosome Women are inferior to men? From ancient texts to modern societal struggles of women being undermined and undervalued, this mantra has been repeated throughout history. However, Olivier Postel-Vinay, a French epistemologist and journalist, criticizes this societal convention through presentation of various scientific

findings

regarding

chromosome X. For instance, the bible states, “Eve was created from Adam’s rib,” yet he argues that Eve had to be created first, since according to sex chromosome genealogy, chromosome Y is derived from chromosome X. The author’s unique argument discussing and

criticizing

inequality

societal

provides

a

perspective that is bound to expand your viewpoints on this pressing issue.
