Certain factors came up repeatedly when we asked what people like or dislike about their TVs. Americans want: TIVO or other ways to manage or avoid commercials, Customization and certain aesthetics, Easy-to-use interfaces and navigation, Ways to control and modify speakers and sound in general, Less bulky, less fragile TVs.
When asked for their “gut response about what a big-screen TV should look like, the results were across the board. (Darker color indicates more consensus.) Simple

Home visit 1. Owner has a large- screen, flat-panel Sony and uses television almost constantly when he’s home - mostly for gaming. He plugs multiple media devices into the set - including a CPU. He has trouble managing all the remotes, but not as much trouble as he has managing all the cables from the devices. He said, “I gave up trying to make the cables look nice, I was so frustrated. There was just no way.
Concept Sketches
In our concept sketches we focused on 3 elements: maximum functionality, novel aesthetics, and slim, sleek designs. We wanted to develop a television that looked new and fresh, but did not stand out in contemporary settings. We wanted a television that would complement, not camoflague, with the furniture in living rooms across the United States. We worked to design a television that was easy to set-up, for example, a television that could be wallmounted, yet its inputs were still accessible.
Concept Sketches
The final design was a marriage of this floating screen idea with a large parting line accenting the frame.
