This is one of my favourite issues of the year, because all the new autumn/winter homeware is arriving in stores and there’s so much to love! There are more new ideas than I’ve got rooms to update, so some tough choices are going to have to be made. Top of my list is fox-print bedding from Tesco (p11) – since ditching plain white last year, I haven’t looked back; plus, some new ‘accent’ cushions for the sitting room – the existing ones having suffered at the hands of my sticky-fingered nieces. But, do I really need a golden tiger (p11) or a unicorn light (p9)? Well, maybe not, but every home should have a little bit of fabulous! We love seeing how you’ve styled your own home, so don’t forget to share your new buys and ideas using the hashtag below…

ABOUT ME I’m 36 and I live with my husband Kevin, 34, and daughter Evangeline, one, in a three-bedroom terraced house in Portsmouth. WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP? Create areas that reflect your personality. Look for pieces at markets and match them with other interesting items to create scenes in your home that draw the eye.

ABOUT ME I’m 42 and live with my husband Joel, 36, and son Ryder, five, in a Leicestershire converted barn. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOP? I love shopping around at higherend stores such as West Elm or Heal’s, but I have many pieces from H&M, Primark and Wilko! TK Maxx and HomeSense are great, too, as you never know what you’ll find!

Gemma Godfrey

Jacky Watts

ABOUT ME I’m 30 and I live in a three-bed home in Cheshire with my partner Ross, 29 and son Louis, two. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? I would have started buying from small businesses sooner. They are more unique and often cheaper. I find people always ask about the pieces I have purchased from them.

ABOUT ME I’m 57 and I live with my partner Brett, 44, in a three-bed detached house in Hampshire. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM? I love my bedroom, as it’s a mix of vintage floral Laura Ashley wallpaper and shabby chic furniture in cream and ochre. Plus, throws and cushions in different fabrics give the space a cosy feel.

Jo Kent

Vickie Nickolls ABOUT ME I’m 37 and I live in a four-bed detached in Bucks with my husband Trevor, 42, and our children Grace, five, and Jake, one month. WHAT’S THE LAST THING YOU BOUGHT? My most recent purchase was some new prints for Jake’s nursery, plus some matt black door knobs to update the existing built in wardrobes in our bedroom.

SHOW IT OFF! Proud of your latest project? Whether it’s a whole-house redo or just an Instagram-worthy shelfie, we want to see it! Email us at styleathome@ti-media.com with some photos and your hard work could be featured in a future issue.

‘The dark green BOOK SHELF ‘I collect old books, arrange them in colour order on the shelves and turn some around to face the other way’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Liz Nagle, 37, and I run giftware shop Echo Designs. I live with my husband Jay, 37, and children Isla, six, and Teddy, two. MY HOME A four-bedroom Victorian terrace in Lancashire, which we bought in 2014. WHEN I MOVED IN There were green carpets everywhere, the bathroom was papered in green and the fireplaces were boarded up. AND NOW We’ve redecorated in a grey-and-white palette, sanded and painted the hall and dining room floors, fitted new carpets and restored the fireplaces and ceiling roses. We also added an extra bedroom in the loft and decorated the basement to provide an office. STYLE TIP Decorate in neutral tones to give you a blank canvas.

20 | OCTOBER 2018

COMFORT RULES The cosy lounge features a mix of traditional furniture with new and shabby chic accessories

decor HAD TO GO!’ Liz fell in love with the large rooms and high ceilings of her Victorian property, but not its dated Seventies scheme

B

efore we moved here four years ago, we were a family of three and we lived in a two-up, two-down,’ says Liz. ‘My husband Jay and I wanted a forever home with a bigger kitchen and garden, and I also wanted a room to work in, as I was about to launch my online design and giftware shop. I’ve always loved making things, and decided to take the plunge and turn my hobby into a business. We looked at a few properties before this one but they didn’t have the period features we longed for. Eventually, we came across this house and fell in love with it instantly. The rooms were all spacious, with high ceilings and large sash windows, and it even had an empty basement that would be perfect to turn into my office and crafting room. The location was great, and although the kitchen and garden weren’t terribly big, the pros definitely outweighed the cons.

First things first We started decorating the ground floor the week we moved in. Much to our delight, the seller took her green carpets with her, leaving lovely old floorboards in the dining room. We sanded them and painted them grey – a practical decision, as this room is used the most in the house. I painted the walls white to give me blank canvasses to decorate with my collections of vintage finds from junk shops and flea markets. I’m quite an impulse buyer, and when I see something I like, I buy it, but sometimes things sit in the basement for months before I find a place for them – the shutters now on the sitting room wall sat down there for a year before Jay and his brother Mark finally put them up on the wall. We also opened up the fireplaces in the dining room and sitting room,

OCTOBER 2018 | 21

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Fit a wooden beam over a brick fireplace cavity for a rustic look’

‘LAYER A MIX OF OLD AND NEW PIECES AND ACCESSORIES IN YOUR ROOMS TO ACHIEVE A MAXIMALIST VIBE’ added the chandeliers and ceiling roses and gave the built-in cupboards and shelves a lick of white paint. The kitchen had white cupboards, dark brown worksurfaces and green tiles. As our budget was tight, we decided to keep the units but had the doors dipped in a grey chalk paint and changed the knobs. We also swapped the green tiles for white, grouted in a co-ordinating grey, and changed the dated worktops. Upstairs, we loved the size of the bathroom but definitely not the green striped wallpaper – we started stripping it the night we moved in! We painted the walls and tongue-and-groove panelling white, but then felt it looked pretty stark, so I started looking for a grey-and-white wallpaper online. I came across the Origin Moroccan trellis design by Albany on Wallpaper Direct which was a bold

22 | OCTOBER 2018

decision but I felt it would work with the wood panelling and size of the bathroom. The old carpet was swapped for an industrial-look lino flooring, which is more hygienic and pleasing to the eye.

Adding space A few months after moving in, I found out that I was pregnant with our second child, Teddy. This prompted us to renovate the loft, to give us an extra bedroom. We didn’t need planning permission, as we were only adding a dormer, but it did need building regulations approval. Work finally started about eight months later, which wasn’t ideal, as I was heavily pregnant by then! We also decided to decorate the other bedrooms at the same time, so there was an awful lot of mess and dust. The size of the loft was a nice surprise – we didn’t know how much

Do it! LAYER UP NEUTRALS Pale hues such as soft greys and off-whites create a great base – combine three or four shades and keep to them throughout your home for a harmonious feel. Mix in natural textures to add depth and interest to your neutral scheme. Stripped wood, linen and wool are good options to consider. A soft accent colour, such as blush pink or duck egg, works well for a gentle, sophisticated look. Or go for a bolder hue to add energy.

GOING GREY ‘We bought the wooden beam for the dining room fireplace for only £20 and painted it grey to fit with the scheme’

ON REFLECTION ‘I collected different framed mirrors, painted the frames white and hung them to bounce light around the room’

COOL VIBES White walls, high ceilings and large sash windows add to the feeling of light and space

Maker JO SAYS

‘The fireplace is the star of this room. Exposing old brickwork while adding a rustic beam gives a nod to the history of the house.’

CHILL OUT SPACE The summer house started out as a playroom but is now a stylish spot for the family to relax

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Use plank wallpaper behind shelving to add texture’

FLOOR PLANS ‘We’ve kept the original wooden flooring in the kitchen as it’s practical and clean, but one day I would love a Moroccan tiled floor’

Type a word on the computer, flip it so it reads backwards, then print it out onto transfer paper. Repeat with the word’s definition, typed in a smaller font. Trim the blank paper around the words, leaving a border of at least 5mm. Lay a tea towel on your ironing board, place your cushion cover on top and iron it to heat it. Place the transfer paper with the printed image facing down and iron the paper, making sure you keep the iron moving constantly. Allow to cool, then gently peel away the backing paper.

We painted the ceiling white and wallpapered with a wood-effect design, then fitted a soft grey carpet in the loft to match the other bedrooms and sitting room. The hall was last on our to-do list about a year later. We sanded and painted the floorboards dark grey and painted the walls white. Favourite areas I love the summer house, which was built to serve as an extra room for the kids to play in and for the family to chill together at the weekend. It really makes a huge difference to our small garden. The pigeonhole unit in the bathroom is a favourite buy – I bought it at a flea market in Staffordshire, and was told it came from a hotel in France. I also love the sofa in the dining room, which was a bargain buy from HomeSense. Jay and I are both very impulsive people and the rooms are constantly evolving with new ideas and our latest bargain purchases.

What’s next? One day, I would like to replace the old wooden kitchen flooring with Moroccanstyle tiles. The driveway is on our to-do list, too. I would also love a roll top bath in the bathroom – maybe when the kids have grown up and left home!’

‘Clever hacks QUICK TRICKS ‘I ordered a tile stencil from eBay and picked a blue paint that resembles the colour of painted Spanish tiles’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Katty Patterson, 32, a retail merchandiser at H&M and founder of online store Hunter’s Bohemia. I live with my husband, Mark, 37, and our two sons, Lucas Hunter, three, and Milo Jagger, one. MY HOME I live in a three-bedroom semi-detached house in Belfast, which we bought in 2010. WHEN I BOUGHT IT It had green carpets, blue walls and orange curtains throughout, but had so much potential, and much more space than other properties we saw. AND NOW We built an extension to add a third bedroom and fulfil our dream of having an open-plan kitchen/sitting area, and refreshed all the rooms with muted hues. STYLE TIP Take time to think a look through before committing to it.

SAVED OUR CASH’ Securing their house was the first step for Katty and Mark, who had plans to extend and put a Scandi stamp on the place

I

’d been scouring the listing sites every night for months when I happened upon this house’, says Katty. ‘It turned out to be directly opposite a couple of properties we’d viewed the day before, but was three times the size for the same price – we couldn’t believe it! Eager to see it, we booked a viewing for the next day. Inside, the house was a riot of colour – green carpets, baby blue walls and orange velvet curtains throughout – and it had a musty, old smell about it. But despite all its imperfections, we loved it. My husband Mark’s father recognised the opportunity to build an extension and, with a few tweaks, we knew it had the potential to be our ideal family home. We couldn’t snap it up fast enough.

Making our mark Working as a merchandiser has helped me to hone my planning skills over the years, which came in handy when faced with a big renovation. I tend to start by trawling Instagram, Pinterest and interiors magazines for inspiration, then I collate my ideas and pick a starting point – usually a paint colour or type of flooring. The front room and hall were first to be decorated when we moved in, then we tackled the extension. The original kitchen was about a quarter of the size of the room we have now. It was a little box at the back, leading out into an enclosed yard, outdoor pantry and loo. I’ll never forget looking out the old kitchen window the day before the back walls were due to be demolished to see Mark up a ladder in his dressing gown, chipping away at the red brick with a tiny chisel and hammer, keen to get the renovation started. We knocked through and extended into the garden, and added a first-floor bedroom. Though we’re sure it’s one of the best decisions we’ve made when it comes

‘YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH LAYERED TEXTILES, A MIX OF MATERIA LS AND A POP OF YOUR OWN PERSONA LITY – IF IN DOUBT, STICK A CACTUS ON IT’ to the house, we didn’t spare a thought to the fact it would be uninhabitable while it was under construction. We’re lucky that our parents were happy to put us up for the four months it took to complete.

Faking it

CAGED IN ‘I saved an image of this shelving unit to a Pinterest board, but I never thought we’d actually own it’

34 | OCTOBER 2018

Unsurprisingly, the extension devoured most of our savings, so we had to be creative when it came to decorating, opting for faux and budget alternatives where possible – a prime example being the kitchen splashback. I’d have loved hand-painted Spanish tiles but we just didn’t have the money, so instead I used a tile stencil from eBay and blue paint to fake the look. A few hours and a lot of patience later, the faux splashback was complete! Visitors and those who follow

me on Instagram (@kittylarouxx) often comment on how real they look, which I’m really pleased about. The kitchen worktop is another budget hack. One day, I’ll invest in marble quartz surfaces, but for now, I’m making do with the ones we nabbed in a clearance, which I covered in marble vinyl.

Getting crafty Mark and I are both fairly adept at DIY, so we’re quite hands-on when it comes to decorating. I’m forever upcycling Ikea furniture, painting it in different colours and fitting new handles to create one-of-a-kind pieces, and I like to try and recreate expensive, designer items on a budget. My most recent successes include a cheap throw that I adorned

I also have a little online business, named Hunter’s Bohemia, where I sell cushions, prints, garlands and accessories I’ve made – many of which are dotted throughout the house.

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Caroline Roelands, 38, owner of online accessories company JJ’s Wigwam. I live with my husband Alex Coburn, 42, a project manager, and our children James, eight, and Juliana, five. MY HOME A four-bed, threestorey, terraced Twenties house in southwest London. We moved here in 2008. WHEN WE MOVED IN My husband owned the house as a rental property, but had very little done to it, so it was in a bit of a state. AND NOW We’ve extended out to make a kitchen-diner and up into the loft, redecorated every room, built a new kitchen and replaced the bathroom. lex and I met in Amsterdam, where I owned a flat, and he persuaded me to move to London,’ says Caroline. ‘Alex initially owned the property, but had it rented out while he lived in a flat nearby. The house wasn’t in great condition as Alex was a typical bachelor and hadn’t really done much to it. There were lots of Eighties touches, like orange walls, an enormous turquoise enamelled bath, which was far too big for the room, and lots of glass block partitions. Despite the house’s dated look, we decided to move in and had some friends living with us. It was a bit of a party house for a while, which was great fun initially, but when I got pregnant with James, it was time to create a family home.

Changing the house Before James was born in 2010, we extended the kitchen into the side return, and also up into the loft. We left the little conservatory at the end of the kitchen as it’s really useful. With the basic structural work complete, it was then a question of tackling the house room by room, which we’ve done over several years. I was excited to bring in some of my native Dutch touches. I can’t bear things matching and we like to use plenty of colour – blues, greens, reds and oranges are popular in Holland, along with exposed brickwork, terracotta tiles and acres of painted wood. Simple design is valued along with comfort.

Choosing the kitchen BENCH APPEAL ‘We got these benches and the table from a local antiques shop for £1,000. They’re so well made and really comfortable to sit on’

I wanted to recreate my parents’ kitchen, with some brickwork, wood floors and floorstanding units only, plus open shelving for crockery and pans. So we opened up the chimney breast and put the cooker there. We couldn’t find a kitchen we liked, so we got a carpenter

to make one for us. The cost was relatively reasonable and we could have exactly what we wanted. It took ages to find the right blue for the units. We started with one that was a bit too dark, but eventually found a warmer tone.

Dual-use space As we already had a table in the kitchen, I wanted to create informal seating at one end of the sitting room. I chose a wooden table and benches, which are a staple in Amsterdam and can accommodate more people. The area also doubles up as an office for me, which is great as I run JJ’s Wigwam, an online business selling childrenswear and accessories, from it. I added shelves along the walls at both ends of the living area as well as

BE INVENTIVE ‘A painted wooden table with mismatched seating is a must in any Dutch home’

In Holland, it’s popular to have painted wooden stairs rather than carpet, so we laid terracotta and black floor tiles and then painted the stairs to match. The tiles were meant for garden paths, but we loved the colours. We chose the tiles first and then got that particular red paint, which you see all over Holland, made up. Metal beds are very Dutch, so we chose them for three of the bedrooms, and a wooden one for the fourth. We also decided to paint the wood floors and add rugs. I really like the look of metal against painted wood, which makes it easier to

Everywhere else is off-white except for the children’s rooms, which each have a fun wall of paper.

I wanted us to be able to relax and not worry too much about the furniture or spilling things. Wood floors are great for that, as you can clear up any mess in seconds. I deliberately chose dark furniture and wood pieces, too, because I want people to be comfortable when they come to visit, and not be concerned that they might ruin something. Simple style is my thing and I like to mix in old pieces found in junk shops with contemporary buys. We’ve slowly added bits of artwork and the odd cushion as we’ve found them. the STYLE RULES Go on a global adventure using a neutral palette

Fill your space with artisan picks and finds from your travels to give it extra personality

Vintage maps and rustic textures create a worldly scheme. EMBRACE NEUTRALS Stick to muted shades for a rustic feel, introducing natural wood and hints of industrial black. CHOOSE A WOW WALLPAPER Be bold with a fun vintage map wallpaper. Too overpowering? Frame a few prints or old maps from a charity shop instead.

PLAY DOWN PATTERN Let a statement wallpaper be the star of the show by choosing subtle fabric patterns in shades of light grey, taupe and white. KEEP IT SIMPLE Look for furniture with linear shapes that won’t distract from the walls. GO RUSTIC ON FLOORS Mirror the aged feel by choosing laminate flooring with a prominent grain.

‘Nothing goes with vintage maps like worn leather. A comfy tobaccoleather sofa would look fantastic against this bold backdrop.’

GET MAKING Accessorise with shabby chic and handmade finds. Think paper garlands or bunting and why not try framing favourite fabrics in embroidery hoops? CREATE A COSY CABIN FEEL Exposed or reclaimed floorboards add to the rustic ambience of the scheme. If easy maintenance is key, choose a wipeable vinyl or laminate design instead.

‘You may think a wood panel wall will limit your options, but you can hang it either way to create a different vibe. And if you tire of the look, just paint it!’

Take note

Hang a large roll of brown paper on the wall from a roll dispenser, so that you’ll always have somewhere to jot down ideas and must-do lists. The kids can draw on it too, and it will make a handy present-wrapping station. Just pull down fresh paper as you need it.

3

Clear the clutter

Keep paperwork and clutter at bay with a variety of storage solutions in your home office. Baskets work perfectly for holding rolls of wrapping paper, while even slimline desks often come with a drawer or two. Maisons du Monde has a great selection of wall shelves and units, from £5.99.

UPCYCLING TIP

When you’ve finished burning one of your posh glass or ceramic jar candles, soften any remaining wax with hot water, give it a quick wash, then use it to store pens and pencils on your desk.

Ready to print

Hide away an unsightly and bulky printer by popping it inside a vintage wooden crate when not in use, and sitting it on top when it is. Keep additional paper in a pretty box file nearby or in the bottom of the crate.

5

Neat idea

Turn a decorative birdcage into bespoke stationery storage, for keeping all your desktop essentials. Make a simple shelf inside by placing a thin piece of wood on top of two battens that rest across the middle of the cage. Use ribbon to hang bits and bobs.

If you’ve run out of space in cupboards and drawers for all your paperwork and bills, keep them in pretty box files and folders, neatly organised on open shelves. Cover plain folders and files in decorative wrapping paper or wallpaper.

Stack storage

Metal trunks or old suitcases make great places to store paperwork, photo albums or even extra stationery, and can be stacked up on top of each other for a stylish display.

9

Tidy trick

Desk drawers often become a dumping ground for all our random bits and bobs, so curb the clutter by inserting a couple of clear plastic drawer organisers and assigning each cubby to a different item. Pop it on your desktop when you need to use it for easy reach.

Hang a trio of clipboards to the wall for an easy, gallery-style display. Clip up the kids’ drawings and paintings, and replace them whenever they create something new.

12

Easy idea

Re-cover the seat of an old office chair to give it a new lease of life. Add extra comfort to keep you going through the day with a sheepskin rug and maybe an embellished cushion or two.

WINDOW WATCHER

Set up your desk in a space that has plenty of light, preferably beside a window or glazed door. The natural light will provide you with more energy and the outside world might even inspire you with new ideas or designs.

For a quirky wall covering, paste unwanted sheet music or pages from an old notebook to the wall of your home office

14

Cork blimey

Make a super-sized cork wall calendar to hold tickets, lists and receipts. Take a large sheet of cork (or use several cork tiles stuck together) and use lengths of string to create 31 boxes – one for each day of the month. Paint or stick the relevant number to each box.

OCTOBER 2018 | 77

Go for a monochrome and natural scheme in an office area, so it doesn’t become too cluttered and busy

15

Wonder wall

Pin ideas and inspiration straight to the wall by covering a large area by your desk in cork tiles or foam board. Add a hook or two so you can hang a blackboard to write messages and reminders, or a clip to hang shopping and to-do lists.

16

So simple...

Mask off a square on the wall above your desk and give it a couple of coats of black chalkboard paint, to create your own oversized to-do list that can’t be ignored! Keep chalk tied to string and hung on the wall beside it.

Letter days

If you don’t have space for a full-sized desk but still want somewhere to write cards and letters, go for a small folding table that can be stored away flat. Pin pretty postcards and prints to the wall that will look lovely whether the table is in use or not.

NO CHARGE

Use gold or silversprayed bulldog clips to attach the leads of chargers to the edge of your desk so they are ready to power up your phone or tablet as soon as it runs out of juice.

TRAVEL TREASURE ‘This rattan chair is from Bali and it’s so comfortable’

‘Original tiles IDEA TO STEAL

‘Rather than clutter up the room with blocky storage or a chest of drawers, go for open ladder storage on which to display special pieces’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I'm Tessa Bird and I live with my partner Robbie Henderson and our daughter Mya, three. We bought the house in 2016. MY CHALLENGE We wanted to turn the bland bedroom into a cosy retreat with a modern makeover that showcased its original features. The floors needed sanding and polishing, which we did ourselves over a couple of weekends, and we were determined to preserve the apricot fireplace tiles. MY WISH LIST Shutters! With long, wide windows on both sides of the room it was hard to find a solution, but we decided the smartest and simplest solution was white shutters. They took up half the budget, but they’re worth it.

WERE MY INSPO’ Keen to retain the room’s Arts & Crafts feel, Tessa kept some original features, but updated others for a contemporary look

B

efore moving here, my partner Robbie and I lived in a Fifties house in Middlesex,’ says Tessa. ‘After Mya our daughter was born, we decided to move out to Surrey where our money would go further and we’d get a decent garden, so we’d been keeping an eye out for the right place. We were thrilled to find this little gem of a house tucked away in a quiet street. It’s an area of Surrey that Robbie knows well, as he was brought up nearby and his sister lives just up the road. The house had so much history and so many original features from the Arts & Crafts era still intact – lovely old fireplaces, gorgeous original hearth tiles and panelled wood everywhere. The flip side was that, as it had barely been touched, it needed lots of work, but we were up for that.

Planning ahead As this house hadn’t been updated for 20 years, its condition would’ve put some people off, but we were excited that it hadn’t been modernised and ruined. Robbie is fairly handy at DIY, and I love interiors, so we drew up a three-year plan as soon as we moved in. The downstairs was more of a longterm project, so we decided to focus first on our bedroom, so we’d have a retreat while decorating the rest of the house and Mya’s room. We started by sanding and polishing the lovely wooden floor over a couple of weekends and painting the built-in wardrobes off-white.

Nailing the style NOD TO THE PAST ‘I wanted to create a calm space with contemporary touches, while preserving many of the original Arts & Crafts elements’

After painting the wardrobes, we then chose a soft grey shade for three of the walls, to go with the original, apricotcoloured fireplace tiles. One wall was left bare for a statement wallpaper, which we found online for just £12 a roll. It seemed too good to be true, and it

OCTOBER 2018 | 81

did take three weeks to arrive from China, but it’s great! As we already had wooden floors, I didn’t want to have a wood bed, too, so I found an upholstered one in a dark grey linen-look fabric to add some texture.

Blowing the budget We splashed out on wooden shutters for the windows, which accounted for a substantial chunk of the overall budget. They cost us over £1,000, but we absolutely love them. They’re a great solution for half-height windows like ours, where a short curtain or multiple

blinds wouldn’t have looked right. And they're useful in terms of extra security, too, so the money was well spent.

Pulling the look together

MODERN MATCHING The cool colour scheme and white-painted furniture contrast perfectly with the original wood floor

I love to take photos and I also collect vintage cameras, so the finishing touch for the room was making sure there was plenty of space to display my finds, which also tie in with the age of the house. The project took three weeks to complete, and I’m proud to say we did all the work ourselves. We love it in here now and I’m so pleased that we managed to preserve the original features.’

‘KEEP AS MANY OF THE ORIGINAL FEATURES AS YOU CAN AS THEY GIVE CHARACTER TO A HOME’

Do it! STYLISH OPEN SHELVING

FINAL TOUCHES ‘We painted our bedside tables white to match the wardrobes, and added these lamps, which I knew would look just right on top.’

82 | OCTOBER 2018

Create small vignettes using items in a variety of shapes and sizes, leaving space around them so that the eye rests on the display. Use the pyramid principle – form a triangular shape by staggering the heights of objects. This is a common trick stylists use to create a sense of balance that’s pleasing to the eye. For a smart, contemporary display match the shelves to the wall colour behind. This will also help make the items displayed really stand out. Include artwork – a framed print or photograph or even a small card propped against the wall will introduce an extra element.

‘Our kitchen STYLE TIP

CLASSIC CHOICE ‘I wanted a traditional look for the sink and tap so I chose a ceramic sink and an arched tap with ceramic handles’

‘Open shelves with a mix of useful and beautiful things look much better than a bank of wall units’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Elina DemurgerJones, 38, and I live with my husband Gavin, 40, and our children Violette, nine, and Ted, six, in a four-bedroom, Sixties detached house in West Sussex. We moved here in August 2015 and this is the fourth house that Gavin and I have renovated together. MY CHALLENGE A year after moving in, smoke from a dishwasher fire destroyed the interior. We had to renovate the whole house while recovering from the experience. MY WISH LIST The original kitchen was separate from the dining room so we wanted to find a way to enlarge it and create a comfortable and stylish space to spend time as a family or when entertaining.

rose from the ASHES’ COLOUR CONFIDENCE ‘With pale walls and lots of light, the new kitchen is able to take dark colours and lively patterns while still feeling spacious and uncluttered’

A dramatic house fire turned into a chance for Elina to create a dream kitchen-diner in her Sixties Sussex home

I

n October 2016, our dishwasher caught fire when I was at work. When I came back, the whole house was black. My husband Gavin and I and our children Violette and Ted moved out that night and stayed with nearby families until we sorted out rented accommodation several weeks later. Our house had been rented out for many years, and we were saving up to renovate it when the disaster struck. It was harrowing but it allowed us to completely renovate the place and create the kitchen-diner we’d always wanted. Two months later, once we had cleared out our fire-damaged possessions, the builders were able to start work.

Extending the kitchen As we had lived here for 15 months, we knew how we wanted to use the space. The dining area was in a Seventies extension, with a thick original exterior wall between it and the kitchen. We talked to our friend Mark, a building surveyor, who suggested removing the wall and fitting a steel beam to create a larger space.

Creating the look We love colour, pattern and texture so we wanted to create a stylish room that reflected our taste and was fun. We designed the space ourselves, spending many hours on Pinterest and online, researching colours, styles and materials. I ordered sample after sample and had a whole room for them in our rental place. I loved the creativity of this process and really missed that time when it was over. The whole look of the room started with the gorgeous bottle-green enamel lampshades I found in a vintage shop in Cuckfield, West Sussex. Initially, I wanted oak units and concrete tops but the tops were too expensive, so we chose grey

Make it! LEATHER PULL HANDLES

Style

Maker VICKIE SAYS

1

Take a length of leather strap – an old belt makes a great upcycling option – and use a sharp craft knife to cut it to your required length. Protect the surface underneath before cutting. Use a leather hole punch to create a hole at each end of the leather strap, at least 1cm from each of the ends of the strap. Measure carefully and then pre-drill holes into the cupboard doors. Slot a carriage bolt through each hole in the leather strap and then screw into the door. Screw a nut onto the other side to make sure the handle is totally secure.

2 3

IN FULL FLOW ‘We kept the cooker dark so it didn’t disrupt the flow of the grey kitchen units’

‘Adding natural textures such as wood and raffia works perfectly with the feel of this eclectic kitchen. The natural tones work perfectly against the green and add interest, too.’

EASY REACH ‘Scaffold board shelves waxed to match the table give us storage surfaces that look great and keep things easily accessible’

‘DON’T BE SCARED TO MIX PATTERN. CHOOSE TWO OF DIFFERENT SCALES ONE LARGE AND ONE SMALL - TO AVOID A BUSY LOOK’ doors with oak tops instead. We designed the kitchen ourselves and bought units from Howdens, then found doors at Kitchen Door Workshop online. I wanted to give the units a bespoke look, so I sourced some leather pull handles. The vinyl floor and wallpaper were also sourced online. Combining two patterns was a bit of a risk but we tried a large sample of each in the room and this gave us enough confidence to take the plunge.

The finishing touches For the dining area, I wanted an industrialstyle, dark wood table but I couldn’t find the right size, so I was pleased to discover Design Shack Bespoke online, which offers a wide range of table legs to go with a bespoke-size tabletop. Their Gang chairs worked perfectly with the table and then the area was finished with a mirror that my mother and stepfather gave me. Seven months after the fire, we were back in our home, enjoying this amazing new space where we now spend most of our time. We spent so long researching, designing and thinking about this room – and it paid off because it’s perfect for us.’

VINYL FLOORS

Elina’s choice:

VINYL FLOORING

Got your eye on Elina’s fabulous floor? We’ve got the lowdown you need…

Q

What is it made from? The core material is a man-made synthetic called polyvinyl chloride resin. Vinyl flooring once contained harmful volatile ingredients that, understandably, put homeowners off, but now it’s totally safe and can even be recycled.

Q

Should I choose tiles or sheet vinyl? Sheet vinyl comes in one piece and tends to be cheaper, although the new breed of custom-printed sheet vinyl (try Zazous or Atrafloor) is costlier but worth it. Standard rolls come in 2-4m widths, so you may need to put up with a join in

BEST FOR… ACCURATE MEASURING Carpetright stocks a wide range of vinyl and offers free home consultations, including professional measuring so you can buy with confidence.

MESS FREE Quick-Step’s patented Uniclic Multifit system couldn’t be easier to install. Using a special tongue-and-groove system, the vinyl planks are laid with a single ‘click’, with no need for adhesive.

ABSOLUTE BARGAINS B&M’s self-adhesive vinyl tiles start from just £3.99sq m, so there’s no excuse not to give that downstairs loo a refresh! For something funky, check out the Bewley Vinyl, £39.99 for a 2x3m sheet.

larger rooms. Vinyl tiles are rigid, and come in packs – some offer super-easy stick-on installation. Luxury vinyl tiles are the top-end option, costing from £40sq m. They offer excellent rigidity as well as insulation, sound absorption and work well with underfloor heating.

Q

How can I check for quality? Thickness is a good indication of quality, for both sheet and tiled vinyl. Cheap sheet vinyl starts at 1.1mm thick, which will make it easy to fit but not very long-lasting. Aim for 3.5mm upwards.

PATTERNED VINYL FLOORS DESIGNER LABEL

Q

Can I fit it myself? Sheet vinyl can be cut with a Stanley knife and is pretty easy to fit in a standard room. Vinyl tiles are installed similarly to ceramic tiles and many come with clickfit edges. Versions that don’t require wet adhesive are cleaner and quicker. For all vinyl, preparing a flat subfloor is essential. A levelling compound or decent underlay is worth the expense. There are plenty of step-by-step fitting tutorials on YouTube.

Q

Is it easy to keep it looking good? Cleaning is straightforward, with a vacuum and an occasional mop. Buy vinyl-safe floor cleaner – nothing abrasive. It can stain if spills are left to puddle so wipe them up straight away. Heavy furniture can create indentations in vinyl so use felt or rubber covers on chairs and casters. Never drag heavy furniture across vinyl as it may scratch or dent the floor.

‘It’s no longer

CRAMPED AND BLAND’ Ditching the bath made all the difference when Carmen redesigned her bijou family bathroom

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Carmen Kenworthy, 48, a hypno-psychotherapist, and I live with my husband Daniel and our two children, Sofia, 11, and Max, nine, in a three-bedroom, Eighties house in Cheshire. We moved here in 2017 and are slowly updating it throughout. THE CHALLENGE Not only was our bathroom tired and dated, but there was very little room to manoeuvre, so my main aim was to find a way to open up the space. MY WISHLIST Sticking with the existing layout was a priority for Daniel in order to save money on costly pipework, and I was desperate to incorporate a generous showering area, along with plenty of extra storage and decorative interest. A radical decision was to get rid of the bath, leaving enough space should we ever want to reinstate it.

92 | OCTOBER 2018

SLEEK STORAGE ‘To maximise floor space we specifically sourced a slimline vanity – it may only be 40cm deep, but it’s 80cm wide, so the basin and storage are still adequate, space-wise.’

BATHROOM MAKEOVER

DRAMATIC DECOR ‘I’m so glad we had the courage of our convictions when it came to using colour and pattern in such a small space, as the bathroom now feels warm and welcoming’

B

eing roughly just two metres square, our family bathroom could never be described as generous and, although it was clean and functional when we moved in, limited floor space meant it felt very cramped.’ says Carmen. ‘What’s more, the stark white wall-to-wall tiling and uninspiring fittings made the room feel rather clinical and impersonal. Simply upgrading with a quality shower over the bath and retiling was the obvious solution, but our family are avid shower lovers, so my husband Daniel and I soon agreed the key feature of the new room should be a spacious, powerful shower.

Getting started Much to Daniel’s delight, we soon came to the conclusion that there was nothing really wrong with the layout, it was just that the existing suite was too big for the space. So with no complicated redesign or relaying of pipework to consider, we chose to design the room ourselves. A friend suggested a good local plumber, who was happy to guide us, and to save money we ripped out the existing suite and flooring ourselves. However, we did bring in the professionals to remove the tiles and replaster throughout.

Maximising space One of our first, and most controversial, design decisions was to ditch the bath in favour of a generous wet room-style enclosure. However, on the advice of our plumber, we made sure the dimensions still allowed for a bath to be reinstated easily, if it’s ever needed. By installing

BLIND PASSION ‘To achieve the look of a wooden blind without the worry of it warping in such a humid area, we picked a smart, easy clean, faux alternative!’

Do it! MAXIMISE A SMALL SPACE Installing a shower instead of a bath will save valuable floor space and a walk-in style will avoid visually sectioning off the area. Go for a floor-to-ceiling frameless screen for a minimal feel. Keep fixtures and fittings simple so as not to break up the space by drawing the eye. Carmen has chosen a simple chrome mixer tap and coordinating shower controls for a sleek look. Avoid clutter with plenty of storage. Carmen’s vanity unit includes a cupboard for stashing bathroom essentials. Mirrors will reflect light around the room and make it feel bigger and more open.

‘INTRODUCING A BOLD PATTERN ON THE FLOOR IS A GREAT WAY TO ADD DECORATIVE INTEREST WITHOUT OVERWHELMING SMALLER SPACES LIKE THIS’

Do it! GO ALL-OUT WITH PATTERN From geo to patchwork, Victorian to floral, there’s a tile to suit any style. For a simpler look, choose plain colour tiles that have an interesting shape, such as triangles or hexagons. Check out statement ranges of flooring designs. Atrafloor even offers a custom service so you can turn your own designs or images into flooring. Use essential bathroom textiles such as towels and a bath mat to inject pattern, whether it’s standout stripes or delicate florals. Even plain white brick tiles can ramp up the pattern stakes. Why not choose an interesting formation such as brick-style or herringbone and use a darker grout to highlight the pattern?

a slimline 700mm wide tray we were able to claw back valuable floor space. Concealing all the exposed pipework plus a new cistern within both a halfand full-height false wall helped visually streamline the room and gave us a handy shelf. Along with the vanity and shower niche, carved out of the existing stud wall, it has tripled our storage capacity!

Establishing the look

IDEA TO STEAL

‘We sited the valve near the entrance, so we can set the temperature without getting wet!’

For me, an eclectic mix can work well, so I had no reservations about teaming our minimalist enclosure with more traditional fittings, such as the luxurious oversized deluge shower, classic freestanding vanity and brick tiles. With the colour scheme, most of our friends thought we were mad to paint the walls such a dramatic, dark green-grey, but I think offsetting them with white tiles and sanitaryware has kept the room both cosy and airy.

Finishing touches In line with our mix-and-match theme, we chose a traditional-style, floor-mounted radiator and opted for a bespoke wood-effect blind. My favourite addition was actually free – it’s the vintage mirror given to us by my mother. It sits happily alongside high street accessories in what, I’m proud to say, is now a luxurious and practical family bathroom, complete with ample floor space!’

PAINTED WOOD PANELLING

Do it

Carmen’s choice:

PAINTED WOOD PANELS Captivated by country-style panelling? It’s easier to achieve than you might think

P

anelling is a simple way to bring architectural shape to plain rooms, while protecting walls from wear and tear. Available in a wide range of mouldings, from subtle tongue-andgroove to grand period designs, there’s a panelling style for every bathroom.

Q

What are the benefits? Without a focal point such as a fireplace, contemporary rooms can lack character. One way to address this is by creating a feature wall of decorative panelling. Besides looking fabulous, panels are a quick fix for uneven, patchy walls. As long as the plaster isn’t blown, and you’ve dealt with any damp, panelling can be fitted over existing walls for an instant neat finish. In the bathroom, it can be a warmer alternative to tiles.

Q

FEATURE LINDA CLAYTON PHOTOGRAPH LIZZIE ORME

Does it have to be MDF? Wood is the traditional material for wall panels but if you’re after a modern painted finish, MDF is much better value and is actually very stable. In wet, humid environments like bathrooms, it’s essential to use moisture-resistant MDF. Painted well in an eggshell finish, it will cope admirably with splashes, but not total immersion – so don’t use it in the shower.

Q

Can I install it myself? It depends on ability but there are DIY panelling kits. These tend to be MDFbased (timber requires professional skills and tools) and can be glued onto walls using a No Nails-type adhesive. If you need to work around windows or alcoves,

it may be worth hiring a carpenter or handyman – try ratedpeople.com.

Q

How high should it be? The top of the panelling should sit either one third or two thirds of the way up the wall. Dividing it in half can make ceilings feel lower. Think about the height of windows and sanitaryware, and don’t forget to include access panels to any isolation valves or cisterns.

Q

Any tips for a pro look? Most panelling specialists supply matching dado rails, which can be used to hide a multitude of levelling sins, leaving a crisp finish between the panelling and the wall.

FRIDGE FREEZER Get your cool box clean and tidy in time for the Christmas cram START WITH THE FREEZER

Remove the contents of your freezer, binning any unlabelled items or items with freezer burn. Pack the rest of the food away in cool boxes while you work. Remove the drawers carefully. If there’s a build-up of ice on the inside of your freezer, you’ll need to defrost it before cleaning. Switch it off (via either the isolation switch or the temperature gauge). Place a shallow dish under the drain spout at the base and several sheets of newspaper under the door to catch the melting water, then leave it with the door open for a few hours to defrost. Remove any remaining ice that hasn’t melted away with a hot cloth. Wipe the inside cavity and drawers with a mild all-purpose cleaning spray, then switch the freezer back on.

2

TACKLE THE FRIDGE

Empty the contents. Bin anything that has leaked or has seen better days. Remove the drawers and glass shelves and clean the internal cavity using your preferred cleaning solution, as above. Any stubborn whiffs can be removed using a 50:50 vinegar and water solution. Wipe the shelves with glass cleaner or specialist wipes. Make sure you get into all the nooks and crannies and right around the door seal, too. Repeat this on the drawers before replacing them.

Spruce up your fridge-freezer this month by cleaning out your crisper drawers of that dead veg sludge once and for all

CLEAN THE EXTERIOR

Now that the inside of your fridge freezer is spotless, it’s time to tackle the exterior. Pull your fridge out from the wall – this should be fairly easy now that it’s empty. Grab a clean paintbrush or feather duster and brush the coils at the back clear of any cobwebs and dust. While you’re there, give the floor a quick clean, too. Finally, wipe the exterior clean (remove any fridge magnets or kids artwork beforehand) and push the unit back against the wall when you’re done.

4

FINISH IT OFF

Replace all the food in the fridge and freezer and pop a deodoriser in the fridge to keep it smelling fresh (try Lakeland’s Fridge It, £4.99).

Regular bleeding will ensure your home’s heating is working efficiently

How to bleed your

RADIATORS

B

leeding your radiators means letting out air that’s become trapped inside your heating system, obstructing the normal flow of water around it. Doing this will make the whole system more efficient, allowing the water level to be topped up, which means a warmer home and should save you money on your energy bill too. Tell-tale signs that your rads need bleeding include cold spots (you could find the top half doesn’t heat up) or if your heating system makes gurgling sounds (a sign of trapped air). If you are unsure, talk to a qualified heating engineer first. YOU WILL NEED a radiator bleed key or screwdriver a tray or bowl a large towel or rag

Lay a geo tile pattern Many ceramic tiles are suitable to be used on floors as well as walls, so why not create a striking geometric design that wraps all around a room for ultimate impact? Start by planning the layout you want on squared paper that’s the correct scale of the area to be tiled. Use tiles that are exactly the same size and thickness as each other, carefully cutting them diagonally from corner to corner (the cuts need to be accurate for this look to work). Fit the tiles as usual and grout them using a co-ordinating shade for soft lines, or a contrasting one to outline the design you’ve created.

PUMPKIN PLANTER This month, our gardening pro Claire Bishop of Dobbies Garden Centres shares her tips

W

hile the supermarkets are full of pumpkins for carving into Halloween lanterns, why not pick one up and use it to create a display with a bit of a difference outside your front door. A generous-sized pumpkin is the perfect shape to carve into a quirky planter. Here’s how to do it… YOU WILL NEED

were making a Halloween lantern. Make the round opening on the top of the pumpkin as wide as you can – this will help you to fit in as many plants as possible. FILL WITH COMPOST Half fill the hollowed-out pumpkin with a good-quality multi-purpose planting compost, just as you would do when filling a standard container.

2

POT UP THE PLANTS Arrange a mix of seasonal plants in shades of orange and yellow. Solanum and heather are good choices for the autumn.

PUT ON DISPLAY Fill any gaps with more of the compost, water well and pop your finished pumpkin planter on a table as a centrepiece or as a seasonal greeting in your porch.

And making your own stone creation doesn’t require a cement mixer in your sitting room! Most DIY and craft stores stock ready-mixed concrete. SPOOKY DECS Throw a fang-tastic Halloween bash with these creepy crafts POM-POM PUMPKINS AND TASSEL GHOSTS YOU WILL NEED Pom-pom maker Orange wool Green pipe cleaners Scissors Pencil Clear fishing wire Cardboard Ruler White wool Googly eyes

1

To make the pumpkins, use the pom-pom maker to create an orange pom-pom. Cut a pipe cleaner into thirds and bend the end of one of the pieces around the middle of the pom-pom. Twist the other end of the pipe cleaner around a pencil, remove the pencil and tie fishing wire around the curled end to hang. To create the ghost tassels, cut out a 10x12cm piece of cardboard. Next, cut a small piece of wool and place it along the cardboard length. Wind the rest of the wool around the width of the cardboard 25 times and tie the short piece tightly around one end. Snip the yarn at one end to release the tassel. Tie another length of wool around the neck of the tassel to secure. Give it a face by adding googly eyes, then hang with fishing wire.
