New Beginnings Opening Days
N
ew beginnings, new friends, new schedules, a new home. Welcome to York College! Exit 353 orientation had a different look this year with freshmen arriving on a Saturday rather than at midweek. After a day of moving into the residence halls, introductions, and the opening picnic, it was off to Nebraska Youth Camp on Sunday for a mini-retreat away from campus and bonding activities. Monday’s agenda
included everything necessary for setting each student’s schedule. An overnight rain cancelled Tuesday’s service projects, but Campus Ministries came through with some Deal or No Deal before the soccer scrimmages and tailgate party. During the first week of classes, the town of York came up to campus for the community fair, which included free prizes and a picnic dinner served in the Campbell Center lobby by chamber members.

Havin’ Fun Food, Games, and a Parade
T
he threat of rain moved the Wednesday night block party from Kiplinger Avenue to Larsen Commons and took away the usual inflatable games. Quick thinking brought in smaller versions of entertainment such as the ladder toss and bean bag throw. Thumbs up were received for making use of the fire pit and providing the fixin’s for tasty s’mores to go along with the usual picnic fare. There’s nothing like a parade to celebrate what’s great about York, Nebraska, and the beauty of a small
town college community. YC put their best feet forward as over a third of the student body marched in the downtown festivities in early September. For many of the freshmen and athletes transferring in from other colleges, this was their first exposure to the local support found in York. The reciprocity of smiles, friendly waves, and contagious laughter were a welcomed beginning to the YC experience.

ocial service clubs are at the core of campus life and a vital part of the York Experience, providing close, personal interaction among students as well as staff. The eight organized clubs give students the opportunity to meet together regularly and enjoy the fellowship during the school year as well as participate in the yearlong activities. They also provide opportunities for leadership, strengthening relationships among students, service to the community, and spiritual growth.
After a few weeks of getting to know some of the particulars of clubs and their members, freshmen and transfer students are able to pledge one that they feel best fits their personality. Club Week is filled with intense fellowship, friendly competition, abundance of fun, conversations around food, and a community service project. Every club strives to build relationships, while serving God and one another. In general, clubs provide a way for students to get involved on campus and build friendships that can last a lifetime.

A Royal Weekend
Homecoming 2014
T
he annual Homecoming and High School Days weekend, October 10-12, welcomed several hundred guests to campus. Alumni returned to relive their great college memories, while prospective students and their families visited to see all that York College has to offer. The weekend included an alumni golf scramble, the theatre department’s old fashioned melodrama The Face on the Barroom Floor, Athletic Hall of Fame inductions, alumni chapel and awards, a choir concert, a couple of soccer games, and many class reunions that met late into Saturday night. Several alumni were recognized during Homecoming Chapel with special awards. Dr. Jackie Humphrey ’59 and Dr. Scott Abraham ’99 were honored with Alumni of the Year Awards, and the Roger and Betty Lessly ’58 family received the York College Legacy Award. To the delight of the crowd, both men’s and women’s soccer teams saw game-winning goals in the final minutes of their contests against Grace University. At half-time of the men’s game, the York College Homecoming Court was introduced. Jake Hasenauer, a senior physical education major from North Platte, Neb., and Brianna Bailey, a senior vocal music education major from Wolverine Lake, Mich., were crowned this year’s Homecoming King and Queen. Homecoming Court were senior candidates (l-r): Kailey Firm, Tyler Cox, Morgan De Boer, Alfred Peters, Brianna Bailey, Jake Hasenauer, Rachquel Banducci, and Collin Tucker; (back row) Freshmen – Sabrina Austin and Ben Wubbenhorst; Sophomores – Delaney Woods and Corey Holmes; Juniors – Melanie Baxa and Nolan Henningson

nsidious villains, a chamber maid with a fortune bequeathed by an old miner, and a dashing romantic hero were just a few of the over-the-top characters that appeared on the York College stage in early October. With piano accompaniment to underscore the action, the theatre department presented an old fashioned melodrama The Face on the Barroom Floor, or Glimpsed Through the Sawdust during the Homecoming weekend. Along with all the drama on stage, patrons enjoyed root beer floats, sarsaparilla, and popcorn during the entertaining production. Described by Director John I. Baker III as dramatic fun for all audiences, the show featured hilarious sight gags, zany action, classic vaudeville routines, and really terrible (and very funny) jokes. Audiences were prompted to boo, hiss, cheer, laugh out loud, and even throw popcorn at the villainous Roderick Rodent.

F
rom the wild outfits of Sketchy Tuesday and Halloween to the flannel shirts of Autumn Fest and retro-sweater looks of Christmas, the fall semester offers some interesting wardrobe choices alongside the celebratory events. But getting into the spirit of the moment and forgetting your worries for a while is all part of the plan. SA’s Halloween Party and the soccer teams’ Sketchy Tuesday were joined this year by baseball’s hilarious costume scrimmage that begs for an annual repeat. Costumes ranged from the deranged and offbeat to the classic and creative productions. Whatever the style, participants seem to enjoy the comic relief and that everyone’s in the moment together. This was the third year for Autumn Fest hosted by Student Association at the Wessels Living History Farm. Complete with some interesting two-steppin’ moves in the barn to pumpkin decorating and a nice spread of food, the evening gave relief from the studies and was a great time of fellowship. As the semester came to a close, there were several Christmas events on campus that gave students the opportunity to think of others and make the most of their friendships and blessings. Emerging Director
One-Acts
T
he York College Theater Department presented the annual Emerging Director One-Acts the weekend of November 14 and 15. The one-acts were the capstone projects of senior theatre student directors Danielle Berry, Andrew Leonard and Bethany Miller. A unique feature of the production was that all three shows dealt with similar themes and took place at the same address, the fictional 216 Nokomis Lane. Tisa Wharton provided narration to weave the three shows together. Authorial Intent, directed by Berry, seems to be the tragic tale of a love gone sour; however, the content goes much deeper, says Berry, who describes it as “a show that explores meaning and asks the question is there anything behind the façade?” Laesha Yeager and Nolan Henningson comprised the cast of this intriguing production. In When God Comes for Breakfast, You Don’t Burn the Toast, married couple Harry and Beatrice, played by Richard Penrose and Ainsley Mountjoy, frantically prepare for a casual visit from The Almighty. Many questions arise as God, played by Brinna Horvath, shows up and the couple must interpret the meaning behind the Divine visit. Leonard commented before the show that the audience should expect the unexpected and “things you assume to happen may not be happening.” The Man in the Bowler Hat: A Terribly Exciting Affair, directed by Miller, had the largest cast with Grady Johnson, Aubrey Tate, Eric Massey, Beth Ann Brock, Natalie Ostrander, Samatha Berry, and Tyler Goodwin. Miller said, “As soon as I read this script, I knew that I wanted to give my actors an opportunity to put this piece of art on for the community.” The play tells the story of John and Mary, an ordinary English couple who live completely ordinary lives until their wish for the extraordinary comes true. When their house is invaded by classic melodramatic characters, pithy dialogues and slapstick humor ensues. PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS

ood and fellowship seem to take a higher priority among the students as each semester comes to a close. Whether it’s pre-finals breakfast, an ice cream social, or just getting together with those in your inner circle, those final moments with friends aren’t to be wasted. Faculty and staff step up their involvement outside the classroom to help bring some of these special times into play and to wish students the best in a great finish to their studies.

T
he York College Theatre Department presented Eugene Ionescu’s Rhinoceros for their spring semester show, Feb. 26 - March 1. The production had a special significance for Director John I Baker III as it was the 100th play under his direction. In Rhinoceros, a small town is besieged by one roaring citizen who becomes a rhinoceros and proceeds to trample on the social order. Initially outraged, the townspeople gradually start turning into rhinoceroses themselves and the trampling becomes overwhelming. As Berenger, the play’s protagonist, watches his fellow-humans succumb to “rhinoceritis,” he finds himself struggling to save humanity from extinction. The play, written in France in 1959, is an allegory about the dangers of conformity and groupthink. It is often read as a response and criticism of the popularity of Communism, Fascism, and Nazism during the events preceding World War II. Baker described Rhinoceros as “one of the most influential theatre of the absurd scripts,” and that although the subject matter is heavy, the script is actually quite funny. Mr. Papillon, Mrs. Boeuf, and Berenger are perplexed by the rhino in the street. (right)

Life’s a Stage Songfest 2015
T
his year’s annual Songfest production, under the direction of Mrs. Amy Fraser and student assistant Brianna Bailey, was a great mix of club shows and performances by the hosts and hostesses: Jasmine Agee, Cameron Holmes, Peyton Horton, Eryn Jacobson, Laurel Simpson, and Caleb Smith. The chemistry they had on stage was readily apparent as was the tight blend of their voices. Their closing acapella number “Run to You,” became an instant classic in the production. Serving as emcees for the evening were Soren Tobey, Cole Craddock and Samatha Berry. This year, the social clubs chose a wide range of themes. Audience members were
able to experience a Flashback to High School with Delta Chi and Kyodai’s high energy show and traveled the world in style on K & B Airlines with Beta Beta Sigma and Koinonia. Theta Psi and Sigma Tau’s Show Me the Money pulled out some dazzling moves and costumes while Omega Phi and Kingsmen put together a wide variety of fun musical hits in Battle of the Ages. Sig Tau and Theta Psi repeated last year’s sweep for Best Music, Best Costumes, Best Choreography, and Best Theme, earning them the 2015 President’s Award for Show Me the Money while Kingsmen and Omega Phi’s Battle of the Ages won the well-deserved, first ever People’s Choice Award.

Panther Pride 2015 Commencement
I
t was a happy day on the York College campus Saturday, May 2, as over 90 students graduated during the morning’s Commencement Ceremony. Held in the Campbell Center, the seats and bleachers were filled with proud parents, excited family members, and eager graduates ready to receive their degrees. Richard James, YC class of 1997, gave the commencement address. After obtaining his J.D. with honors in 2000 from Washburn University School of Law, James became a lawyer in Wichita, Kansas, and has served as a trustee for York College since 2013. He encouraged the senior class to be grateful, gracious and generous. “York College’s proudest moment is not a building, it’s not an academic or athletic accomplishment. Our proudest moment is you... our graduates. York College is thriving like it’s never been before. York is succeeding, if you want to know how we’re succeeding, look at our graduates.” At the conclusion of the commencement address, Dr. Shane Mountjoy presented the Dale R. Larsen Teacher of Achievement Award to Ruth Carlock, Director of Levitt Library,

who completed her 26th year at York College. Mountjoy then presented the Dean’s Award to Chelcie Holloway, an education major from North Platte, Nebraska, who graduated summa cum laude. The award is the highest academic honor given by the faculty to a graduate whose involvement and leadership are matched by their high academic success. Besides the 88 students who received their Bachelors Degree, this year was a first for York College graduates earning their Masters. President Eckman described the event as exciting and congratulated the graduates on being pioneers in the college’s new foray into graduate education.

C
hapel is more than a few songs, a prayer, and listening to a speaker. It’s about community. At no other point in the day is the entire YC family invited to share time together in fellowship... to catch up on what’s going on, to celebrate victories, or to just see a familiar smiling face that says, “You belong here.” The 125th anniversary of York College produced a lot of great alumni speakers throughout the year as well as our own graduating seniors giving their final reflections. From President Eckman’s welcome and optimistic vision at opening
chapel to the final Monday morning singing of the alma mater, there was no better place to be on campus. A new and improved twist to the regular schedule was the introduction of Community Day by the chapel committee. With Kailey Firm and Emily Lutz guiding everyone into an organized chaotic frenzy of friendly competition, students, faculty, and staff were able to let loose on those special days and just enjoy time spent together in laughter and a heightened sense of brotherly love. The conversations after chapel are an important part of the daily experience. (above) Caleb “Moose” Smith gave a memorable senior chapel about his choices in life. (left inset)

T
ransforming lives through Christcentered education begins in the classroom and permeates the entire college experience. York College faculty go the extra mile to deliver their discipline of study, sometimes coming up with new and improved ways to ensure students are successful in their coursework. Creative thinking and teaching, tutorial assistance, road trips, extra office hours... all make the learning experience more complete and attainable.

very York College student brings something to campus community. They bring their passions, talents, joys, hopes, convictions, their thoughts and their hearts: many different individuals, but one student body. It is the job of Student Association to serve that body, meeting once a week to bring all corners of the college to the table. Student Activities Board, the Inter-Club Council and Student Senate together combine to make up this organization, as they plan student events, govern matters of student concern, and strive to promote campus community. Though much of their work is done behind the scenes, their visible efforts in the fall included Club Week, Autumn Fest, and the Faculty Appreciation Dinner as well as the Haunted House Halloween Party, Campus Christmas Event and monthly YC Night at the Movies. Much time in the fall was also given to discussions of an academic Honor Code, a policy that would promote academic integrity on campus. Events in the spring included Nertz Night, the Super Bowl Dinner, YC’s “Singled Out” Valentines Event, Open Mic Night, Easter Egg Hunt…and of course YC Night at the Movies. SA also held a Town Hall Meeting, where senators met with their respective classes to gather input from students on various areas of their experience through an interactive questionnaire created by SA. Their comments were worked upon by student senate, and efforts were discussed in a follow-up presentation given later in the semester. SA also helped host former NFL Football player Kenny Onatolu’s visit to campus, and Olympic Gold Medalist Earl Young for the York Community Bone Marrow Drive. At the All-College Banquet, officers presented on behalf of the student body, the Staff Member of the Year Award to Assistant Dean of Students Mr. Jeff Finch, and the Faculty Member of the Year Award to Psychology Department Chair, Dr. Jaclyn Spivey, while helping to support the BPAC tree dedication in their honor. At the end of the year they helped provide desk chairs for Sack Hall, and new furniture for the McCloud Hall lobby, to benefit students both in and outside the classroom. YCSA is a team of students that is designed to serve YC students, and to encourage a YC family that strives to be light in our world.

C
ampus Ministries stayed busy throughout the year making a difference in the spiritual pulse at York College. They began their ministry helping new students unload and check into their residence hall, served as group leaders for orientation, and helped put together an impromptu “Deal or No Deal” when the freshman service projects were rained out. A few days later they assisted with the welcome back party as the 2014-15 school year got underway. The YCM staff was very involved with the year’s course of daily chapel, 9’o clock, Wednesday Night, dorm devotionals and social events. As always, the big event was the February Shine Retreat at Timberlake Ranch. The annual winter getaway was a time for spiritual renewal and fellowship for YC students and had the theme of “True Faith.” Group encounters, mixers, paintball, card games, and kill ball were among the activities. Keynote speakers were YC alumni Ben Berry, Stephen Colwell, Chris Luther, and Carson Tuttle. This was Willie Sanchez’s second and final year as YC Campus Minister as he took a preaching position in Oklahoma toward the end of the year.

elebration Singers made the Gurganus stage come alive once again with their end of semester performances of “Cocoa and Carols” and “Ducktails and Bobbysocks.” In December, their four-day production “The Spirit of Christmas” was sold out in advance of opening night. The family-friendly production featured a variety of solo and ensemble numbers, including beloved Christmas favorites with choreography and skits. The admission price of $5 included cocoa and cookies that the local chapter of Helping Hands made available. The Singers presented their high-energy spring production “Ducktails and Bobbysocks” on April 21 and 22. Audiences once again packed Gurganus Hall for both nights. The show featured a wide variety of music from the 50s and 60s, including Walk Like a Man, Stupid Cupid, You Don’t Own Me, Blue Moon, and a medley of others that took the audience back to the early days of rock and roll. Dr. Clark Roush directed both shows with Nolan Henningson co-directing “Cocoa and Carols” and Amy Lindstad co-directing “Ducktails and Bobbysocks.” Gabby Siebenaler takes center stage in the opening Cocoa and Carols number. eta and Koinonia kicked the year off hosting their traditional luau with the exciting new addition of the car bash fundraiser in which participants were charged $1 per hit and $5 to smash a window. Events that took place during Club Week were kiss and tackle, speed dating, Beta’s paint twister/slip n’ slide, and more. Members of Beta and Koinonia acted as servers at a wedding held at the convention center in December and volunteered at Adopta-Pet throughout the year. Other activities included movie nights, bonfires, game nights, Fugitive, a special endof-the-year/birthday bash for Beta’s VP Laurel Simpson, and the K&B Airlines Songfest show. Beta received the Academic Excellence Award for the highest accumulative grade point average among clubs at the All-College Banquet.

rom Club Week to graduation, the women of Delta Chi Alpha and the men of Kyodai were busy doing what social service clubs are designed to do: fellowship and service. Many of the activities enjoyed during the year were together such as their Halloween and Christmas parties, club banquet, and the Delta/Kyodai bowling night. The two clubs put a lot of time together in the spring semester rehearsing for their fun and energetic Songfest production Flashback to High School with many memorable moments. At the All-College Banquet it was a repeat performance for both clubs as they were once again awarded the All-Sports trophies. For various service endeavors such as babysitting for the holiday Drop ‘N Shop, Delta was also the recipient of the Community Service Award. O
mega Phi and Kingsmen do so many things together that it can be difficult to not think of one without the other. Joint activities included their trip to the zoo in September, caroling at Hearthstone, club Christmas party, devotionals, and service projects. But none was bigger than putting an amazing show on display at Songfest and winning the first ever People’s Choice Award. Members enjoy one another’s company and it shows. The clubs do, however, enjoy their “alone” time where they can let loose and treat each other as family. As Omega Phi president Aileen Edmonds said, “Every week for club meeting we all have the best time because we’re all friends. A lot of times our meetings last a while because we love catching up and spending time with each other.” Tyler Goodwin and Ainsley Mountjoy are at home under the stage lights. I
t was another big year for Theta Psi and Sigma Tau. From Club Week and Coronation to the All-College Banquet, members seemed to be involved in about every aspect of campus life. During the year the clubs volunteered at York’s Adopt-A-Pet and several members went to Lincoln to participate in the Buddy Walk to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. With devotionals, movie nights and fugitive games all in the mix, members were able to hang out together throughout each semester. The clubs made a repeat appearance at the Songfest closing ceremony as Show Me the Money, under the direction of Joe Davis, Nicole Gates, Darrien Gomez, and Nolan Henningson, swept the awards for Best Music, Best Costumes, Best Choreography and Best Theme to take the coveted President’s Award. At banquet, Theta Psi was presented the Big Heart Award for having the highest percentage of participation in the campus blood drives.

Y
C Cheer and Pom Squad was under new management this year as Lindsey Eckert, YC class of 2003, took over the coaching duties. The ladies in blue and white did their best to keep the fans engaged and supportive of our athletic teams. Whether it was using enthusiastic cheers to get the crowd into a game or making signs supporting various athletes as they represented YC on the field, the encouragement given by this group was invaluable. Returning members to the squad were Andrea Bowman, Bre Goben, Bailey Kinney, and four-year veteran Sheyli Thomas. Joining them were Brittany Eckerberg, Courtney Lovelace, Makenna Morris, and Ashley Spagnolo. Aubrey Cote, Michelle Orduna, and Destiny Sandoval were part of the group during the fall semester. Getting the home crowd fired up has its demands, but it was readily apparent the support provided by this Panther team made a difference in its service to the student body. Go Panthers! Honor Societies
igma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, actively pursued their love for the spoken and written language through various venues throughout the year. In honor of Valentine’s Day, some members attended the Poetry Out Loud event hosted by Mark Houston and the English Department. It featured the readings of Dr. Robert Lawrence, Houston, and several students. On April 19, they attended the English Department’s third annual Writer’s Workshop, arranged through the Nebraska Humanities Speaker’s Bureau. Nebraska author Joe Starita was brought in for an hour-long lecture as well as a question and answer session. York’s own Tim McNeese, who has authored over 100 books and education materials, followed that by giving a hands-on workshop for writers. The group also stayed busy during the year with their annual edition of Unvarnished Words. The collection of creative prose, poetry, artwork, and photography from York College students is a mammoth undertaking and spills over into the fall semester for completion. Mark Houston was the guest speaker at the Sigma Tau Delta induction ceremony. The 2014 inductees were Ashlee Ivey, Amanda McAllister, and Sarah Mertens. Returning members were Quentin Becker, Danielle Berry, Kyle Bottom, Morgan Goracke, Tyler Helms, and Bethany Miller. Beverly McNeese was the lead sponsor and Dr. Jennifer Dutch was the co-sponsor. Experiential Learning Beyond the Books

T
he classroom is only part of the education experience as opportunities arise to think outside the box. In December, 200+ elementary students from York and surrounding areas attended the 2014 Geography Fair, hosted by the students of Christi Lones’s Cultural Geography class. With food, games, costumes, and language lessons, it was a fun and educational event for all who participated. In early May, Dr. Erin DeHart and Tim Lewis took a group of 19 students on the Holocaust Studies course, traveling to New York City and Washington D.C. While studying in an experiential format, the students also learned about Jewish culture, immigration themes, and social justice. Students were able to meet two survivors that were hidden as children during the Holocaust — Dori Katz (Belgium) and Simon Malkes (France). The class also visited places like the Jewish Heritage Museum, Museum of Tolerance, Shabbat at a Synagogue, Ellis Island, Tenement Museum, Memorial Library, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

rom the opening chapel ceremony in August through May commencement, York College celebrated its 125th anniversary. Faculty members Tim and Beverly McNeese and Christi Lones were commissioned by President Eckman to chronicle the history of the college and released their 128 page book at Homecoming. In recognition of YC’s rich heritage, a number of alumni and friends of the college were invited to present in chapel and devotionals as a Year of Celebration speaker series. The start of the Beyond 125 capital campaign was met with great success. At the public launch, $8.5 million of the $10.7 million goal had already been secured. Campus seemed to be constantly under construction with the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center taking center stage among the campus initiatives. The Clayton Museum of Ancient History featuring the Stanback Collection continued its progress with a grand opening slated for the fall of 2015. The Touchton Clubhouse sprang into view just east of Sack Hall as students were leaving for the summer. The baseball team will have full use of the locker room facility at the beginning of their 2016 season. Fall enrollment came in just under 400 students as 2014 had one of the largest graduating classes. Dr. Kelley Ritter (Education) joined the YC faculty in the fall while Dr. Erin DeHart was promoted to Associate Professor of Education after completing her Ed.D. On the financial side, York College was able to finish in the black for the sixth consecutive year.
