CELEBRATING A BRIGHT YC FUTURE

Beyond 125 Campaign Celebration
From the desk of the President Beyond 125. Almost five years after initial campaign preparations began, it is complete. When it ended June 30, Beyond 125 was the most successful fund raising campaign in York College history. The goal of $10.7 million was met and surpassed by a $16.87 million response. The gifts were beyond anything we could ask or imagine. While the dollars provide a measuring stick for our success, the real success is in the way our joint commitment for York College has strengthened and enhanced the York Experience now and for years to come. The resulting endowment growth along with nine straight years in the black has positioned the college with new opportunities that were unthinkable a decade ago. Most important, the planning for and generous response to Beyond 125 mattered to our students. New buildings and campus improvements are an obvious outcome, but no one should overlook the importance of the dollars that allowed us to hire new faculty and staff, retain and support dedicated employees who were already here, and provide access to students through scholarship awards. This report gives a brief look at what your gifts have meant to our students – how scholarships make a way for them to enjoy the York Experience, how they find academic preparation and mentoring here beyond what they expected, and how a changing campus gives them tools and opportunities to prepare for career and life and faith. As we celebrate the way the York College community came together to make this happen, I want to commend my fellow alumni. The dollars you gave were significant and the alumni participation rate of 33.9% during the campaign is a landmark achievement for the college. Thank you. But the good news of the campaign did not start or end with alumni. Our trustees and our campus community of faculty and staff responded with a 100% participation rate during the 2014 campaign launch. The city of York, ever faithful to the school that bears its name, responded with more than $2 million in gifts. By the time the campaign concluded, it could accurately be described as a partnership of every constituency who knows and cherishes York College. Thank you to every donor. Your gift, every gift, is important. Thank you to our volunteers for your time and advocacy. Thank you to everyone who joined this partnership that now spans more than 125 years and many generations. When I think about Beyond 125 and its result, it seems fitting to paraphrase David’s words in response to God’s favor, ‘Who are we, Lord God, and what is this community, that you have brought us this far?’ As people of faith have done in the past, I pray we honor the One who gives every good gift and commit ourselves to steward this good place for His glory in the days to come. Sincerely, Steve Eckman President
COMMUNITY
A TEAM EFFORT The success of the Beyond 125 campaign is the story of many
Campaign Goal
people with a variety of relationships to York College, from Nebraska and places far beyond, coming together to support affordable, Christian education. They gave for all kinds of reasons and to all kinds of projects and needs. Alumni, trustees, faculty and staff, students, parents and other family members, and supportive friends in the greater York community—so many dug deep and gave generously. The impact of these gifts will be felt by students for years to come. To all who participated in the campaign, on behalf of the students, we say thank you.

Growing with the York Community
ALL IN York College Board of Trustees members, faculty, and staff kicked off the campaign in 2014 with 100 percent participation, totaling just over $1 million. The York Community responded in a big way in 2015, committing to more than $2 million in gifts, much of it in support of the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center construction. These lead gifts from those that know York College best laid the groundwork for the success of the campaign.
RAISE YOUR PAW The alumni response to the campaign was remarkable: 49 alumni advocates helped us spread the word among their classmates and four generous alumni stepped forward anonymously to make a $250,000 challenge gift. These factors combined enabled us to reach a record high for alumni giving of 33.9 percent. Nearly $1 million came from younger alumni; for many, it was their first gift to YC.
Scholarships make it possible for me to be at York College and as a member of “ choir and Celebration Singers, I am so thankful for the new performing arts
center. To all of the people who gave during the campaign, thank you so much. Your gifts are making a difference in my life and in the lives of so many students.”

have definitely felt myself transform in so many ways here,” says Cassidy Wilson. “I’ve become more of a leader and my faith has become my own.” Wilson is an education major with no set plans for the future beyond teaching and working with a church (she was a youth intern this past summer). “I’ve tried to plan out my life in the past and that didn’t work so well. Now I am just waiting to see where God leads me.” In the meantime, Wilson is continuing to grow her skills and her faith as an intentional leader on campus. She is involved in volleyball and student government.

York College Scholarships
SCHOLARSHIPS Alumni most often describe York College with just one word: home. It’s a place where faculty and staff welcome students into a community of faith and learning, where students are mentored, challenged, equipped, loved, and ultimately transformed. These life-changing, future-shaping experiences often cannot happen without scholarship support. These gifts make all the difference for students.
THE YORK COLLEGE FUND provides immediate scholarship dollars that ensure access to high quality, Christian education. Your gifts fund academic, athletic, and arts awards, as well as others. A robust scholarship program means that the York Experience is within reach for many who would otherwise have to consider alternatives. It also means our graduates leave YC with about half of the national average debt load. That’s something every donor and alumnus can feel good about.
York College found every way possible to give me scholarships. I wouldn’t be “ here this year without that. They have definitely helped me. To alumni who gave for scholarships, thank you. You are giving others the same experience you were blessed to have as a YC student.”
—CASSIDY WILSON, JUNIOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR, MOORE, OKLAHOMA
SCIENCE
THE NEXT STEP Hailey Stigger is pursuing a career in medicine and is glad to be working with the knowledgeable faculty in the biology department. “Mrs. Miller is my advisor and she is great about keeping me on track so that I finish on time,” said Stigger, who also runs track and cross country at YC. “I met with Dr. Eckhart about going into a physician assistant program after I finish my biology degree. He’s always available when I have questions, and he’s been through the process because he used to be a physician. I know that they are both excited to see me achieve my goal of becoming a P.A.”

DEFINING SUCCESS Each year, the Department of Natural Sciences at York College turns out highly successful graduates who are serving in the medical field, working in conservation and animal welfare, and doing the important work of research in many areas of scientific inquiry, from pharmacology to water safety. The defining characteristic of the program is the atmosphere of support in the department, where faculty members know their students’ passions and encourage them.
HANDS-ON LEARNING The close relationships forged in a small department are a great benefit to York College students, who have the opportunity to hone their collaborative and communication skills along with their scientific knowledge. With frequent learning trips, including occasional medical missions opportunities, students are challenged in many environments to see God at work in the natural world.
Scholarships are really helpful. It would be hard for me to be here without “ them, for sure. I’m a very disciplined person and they push me to work even harder. To those that have given for scholarships, I want to say thank you. You are making a difference to more people than you know.”

McGehee, sharing late night Ramen and conversation after curfew. It’s daily chapel, Sunday night communion service, and club activities. It’s thousands of moments that shape students’ hearts and minds, drawing them closer to each other and closer to Jesus. During the Beyond 125 campaign, parents of current students created a special fund for upgrades to the Freeman Gymnasium and The Spot campus coffee shop. These gifts have had an impact on the York Experience of every student.

THE SPOT CAMPUS COFFEE SHOP Thanks to a recent facelift, including new lighting, flooring, furniture, and bathroom upgrades, McGehee is once more the hub of student life on campus. Student Activities Director Emily Lutz ’14 says the main floor of McGehee is a high energy place to be every evening, as students meet there for coffee and snacks, to watch t.v., play games, and study alone or in groups.
SPIRIT POWER Office space for campus ministries is also in McGehee, directly adjacent to The Spot, giving students easy access to Vice President for Spiritual Development Dr. Sam Garner and student ministers. While the weather is nice, weekly devotionals are held on the steps of McGehee. In inclement weather, devos move inside to The Spot. The space is an important place for relational ministry to occur before and after devotionals as students explore and discuss important issues concerning their faith.
People want to be at The Spot to socialize, study, and take advantage of the “ space. It is busy all evening long. It’s an important place for new students to connect with older students and build community.”

BUSINESS
REAL WORLD EDUCATION
From successful alumni guest speakers to collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and York County Development Corporation, students in the Elijah A. Levitt School of Business are getting much more than a theoretical knowledge of business concepts. They are thinking creatively to find solutions to problems that face businesses everywhere, preparing to become business leaders that can go anywhere. Melissa Strong, a senior who placed fourth in the nation last summer at a Phi Beta Lambda business competition, says “We have a good program with excellent teachers. I want people to know that about York College.

LEADERS ON A NATIONAL STAGE Phi Beta Lambda is an organization that prepares undergraduate students for a successful career in business through innovative leadership and career development programs. York College’s PBL chapter is active in the local business community and successful in regional and national competitive events. YC senior Melissa Strong recently placed fourth in the nation at a PBL competition and several others also qualified for nationals.
NEW HORIZONS The agriculture business degree was launched in the spring of 2017 in response to needs in the local economy. The feasibility study for this additional degree program was made possible by a gift to the Beyond 125 campaign. York College is now the only Christian college in our state to offer an agriculture business degree.
There are so many opportunities in York County for our business students to “ have internships. Every business that I work with that has employed YC students as interns has been impressed with the business department, with the quality of the work our students do, and with their willingness to learn and adapt in the workplace. York College is a great partner with the community of York.”

THE TOUCHTON CLUBHOUSE Baseball is a big deal to Kevin Olmstead, second

baseman for the Panther varsity squad. “It’s the greatest sport of all time,” he said. “Baseball humbles you—you’ll fail seven out of 10 times and still be considered really good. You are constantly humbled but you have to keep trying and keep believing in yourself and never quit.” He’s played on a number different teams over the course of his 16-year career in the sport, but he says nothing compares to the family atmosphere of the York College team, fostered by the new home of the Panthers, the Touchton Clubhouse, made possible by gifts from many baseball alumni and friends.

TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE The clubhouse honors Paul Touchton ’61, who started the baseball program at York College. Touchton played basketball as a student and returned to coach baseball, basketball and soccer from 1964 to 1973. Touchton is a York College Lettermen’s Association Lifetime member, a member of the board of trustees, and a longtime supporter of Panther Athletics.
TEAM CHEMISTRY Head Coach Brian Walth ’01 says the clubhouse has changed his program dramatically. “The clubhouse gives us a place to come together as a team. It’s the center of our program and because of it, our team chemistry is better. We have more of a family feel now. The team is proud of this facility and it gives them a sense of pride in our program. Most elite programs have a nice clubhouse, so the new building helps me to be competitive in recruiting.”
The new Touchton Clubhouse has made us more of a family and really “ bonded us together. We share a lot with each other and are real with each
other about what’s going on in our lives. Coach Walth wants us to become better baseball players, but he really wants us to become better men—become more disciplined and experience God more. We all encourage each other.”

Hannah Anderson chose York College, but the chance to work in the Clayton Museum of Ancient History topped the list. “I’ve always wanted to work in museums,” said Anderson, who was a junior docent at the local living history museum for several years prior to college. Today she is a student worker in the Clayton Museum and is using the opportunity to learn all she can about the business of history. She works closely with mentor Amber Soderholm ’10, museum curator. “I’m learning how to make artifact reports and interact with guests. I’m also getting to handle artifacts. I got to touch pottery from the Early Bronze Age to Iron Age. It was amazing!”

EDUCATIONAL FUN The Clayton Museum is a great resource for students at YC as well as visitors from near and far. There are three permanent exhibits with artifacts and replicas from Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Rome, Israel, and more, as well as a temporary exhibit space. The museum regularly hosts lectures and events, such as a recent speaker series on archaeology and the Bible. The museum is free to the public and is often visited by schools, churches, and touring groups.
DONORS LIKE YOU The original gift of artifacts and funds to establish the museum came from a single donor, however a great many others came alongside to complete the work and bring the museum to fruition. Two collaborators of significance on this project are the Sojourners, who volunteered their time and expertise in finishing renovation of the space for the collection and the York County Visitor’s Bureau, which provided funds for the children’s interactive area. The Visitor’s Bureau has also been instrumental in promoting the museum throughout the region.

ACADEMICS
BE MORE AT YC Corrie McDonald was drawn to York College for its Christian environment and the opportunity to play soccer. “On my first visit, I fell in love with the campus, with how homey it felt. Everyone was very welcoming,” she said. “The idea that I could be involved as soon as I got here was very appealing. Now, I’m captain of the soccer team, president of Theta Psi, a resident assistant, and part of the Campus PR Squad. ‘Be More At YC’ isn’t just a slogan. It’s so true. You can be whatever you want to be here.”

MUSICAL EXCELLENCE The new Huber, Brown and Bruner practice rooms and the Moody Choral Rehearsal Hall mean better preparation for music students and future educators. A baby grand piano was the crowning touch for this program. The new building has allowed greater comfort and accessibility for patrons, in addition to expanded seating.
THE CURTAIN RISES While performing in Gurganus had its charms, the amenities offered in the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center (such as the Jim Brock green room, Darlene Miltner office suite, dressing rooms, and expanded backstage space) make it ideal for theatre students to learn, grow, and perform. The multiform theatre in the center of the building seats up to 350 patrons and allows for more elaborate set pieces and bigger casts.
Bartholomew Performing Arts Center was made with sound and lights “ inThemind, where things should be connected, where outlets should be. It’s a very good blank slate. Everything you need for a great show is already there and all you have to do is jump in.”

When two York College alumni, Wayne White and Steve Belden, first introduced me to York College in 2002, I was caught off guard by the passion they had for this small Christian college in Nebraska. They didn’t want Cynthia and me to simply know about York, they urged us to visit, donate money, and become advocates for the school. It was clear that York College had changed their lives and when we checked out the school, we found a place that was changing many lives and had been doing so for many years.

In fact, York College meets two important criteria as I steward the resources God has graciously given us. What we found at York College was a dedication and devotion to preparing men and women for life and, of equal importance, an intentionality to maximize the use of every resource, including gift dollars, toward that end. Knowing that our investment makes a difference in people’s lives and is well spent, convinced us to become investors. Those two attributes mean a lot to us, and in recent years, Beyond 125 has exemplified both. During Beyond 125, your generosity has provided new facilities without adding any new burden of debt to students. It has provided facilities that are sustainable for the future. The campaign made York College an even better place to call home, to learn, and to prepare for life. It means programs were sustained and allowed to grow. Best of all are the number of students whose York Experience was made possible because of funding for current scholarships and the number of endowed scholarship dollars added that will benefit students for years to come. The campaign mattered. Your gift mattered. And, I personally thank you for your generous support in making the campaign a huge success! One caution though is that planning and funding are never complete. Beyond 125 is no exception. The response and the amount of money raised are gratifying, but it doesn’t mean we can relax. Rather it gives us a strong position to launch into the future and envision greater service in the days to come. So, what’s next? For the sake of students, whether they enroll this fall or 20 years from now, we are going to take a brief time to stop, listen to our alumni and friends, and test our plans. Plans to grow endowments that strengthen programs and scholarships as nothing else can, plans to address additional facility needs, and plans to further develop programs that give us an opportunity to reach out to new audiences (most of whom have never before heard of York College). As we do this, I encourage you to share your perspectives, dreams, concerns and hopes with us. And as we set our sights on what happens Beyond 125, I urge you to consider how you might participate in the days and years ahead. For everyone whose gifts made Beyond 125 a success: thank you. Thank you for being a lifechanger and a kingdom builder and a friend to York College.
H. Jarrell Gibbs Beyond 125 Campaign Chair and Chairman of the Board
Cameron Merrill was set to attend a different school and major in pre-med, however the Lord led him to York College and to an unexpected path: “I felt that God was calling me to ministry,” he said. “Dr. Seufferlein’s intro to ministry class opened my eyes, learning what ministry is all about. That class and discussions with Professor Seufferlein really impacted me.” Now Cameron is in York Campus Ministries, getting a first-hand look at the work of a minister. He plans to do youth ministry after graduation, and perhaps family ministry or pulpit ministry later in life.
“Scholarships definitely make it easier on my family for me to be here. Scholarships also encourage me to keep working, keep pushing, and make myself better every day.” —CAMERON MERRILL, SENIOR BIBLICAL STUDIES, YOUTH MINISTRY MAJOR, EDMOND, OKLAHOMA
