Stewart S. Olewiler, III ‘73 (Dover, PA), was awarded the 2022 Credit Union Volunteer of the Year Award by the CrossState Credit Union at their annual conference in May 2022. He has served as Chair of the First Capital Federal Credit Union board for 30 years.
Susan M. (McQuade) Lacomba ‘03, RN, BSN, MHA, CNOR (Mechanicsburg, PA), has been named as Vice President of Perioperative Services with Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE.
1990s Corey L. Devaric ‘96 (Easton, MD), has been promoted to Principal of Tilghman Elementary School in Talbot County, MD. Mark A. Wheeler MBA ‘94 (Red Lion, PA), was the commencement speaker at Penn State York’s Spring Commencement in May 2022. He is the Chief Operating Officer of The York Water Co. and has served on the Penn State York Advisory Board since 2011.
2010s Imara A. Miles ‘17 (Hyattsville, MD), will be a Resident Artist for the 2022-2023 season with the Toledo Opera. Stephen O. Okoth ‘17 (Dillsburg, PA), earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Old Dominion University.
Weddings and Engagements Jessica L. Bell ‘01 and Daniel E. Winter ‘00, both of Stratford, NJ, are engaged. A January 2023 wedding is planned. Autumn L. Darbrow ‘11 (York Haven, PA), is engaged to Johnny Pleacher. An October 2023 wedding is planned. Gabrielle M. Fergo ‘18 (Elkton, MD), and Grant T. Baker ‘18 (North East, MD), were married on June 24, 2022.

Deceased ALUMNI Sarah K. (Matern) Alles ‘90 (Hanover, PA), July 3, 2021. She also earned degrees from Valparaiso University and worked in nursing at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical Center. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Gregory, four children, and three grandchildren. Edward E. Baker ‘89 (Red Lion, PA), May 8, 2022. He attended York Junior College before finishing his studies at George Washington University. He owned and operated Fireplace City in York, retiring in the late 1990s. He is survived by three daughters, many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Donald T. Barnhart ‘57 (Lititz, PA), August 25, 2021. He attended York Junior College, then served in the Dental Corp. of the U.S. Navy before continuing his education at the University of Denver. He received the University’s Distinguished Service Award in 1963 and 1974. He worked for RCA/GE/ Burle Industries for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. He was a Lifetime Scout and volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 1949. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Arlene, and their three children. Zachary R.H. Berkheimer ‘15 (Baltimore, MD), August 16, 2020. He is survived by his father, sister, and longtime girlfriend, Carly.
Richard M. “Rick” Brockman ‘73 (Frederick, MD), September 20, 2021. He and his wife, Rosemary, owned and operated Women’s Custom Cleaning Service, and they were married for 30 years. Kent M. Ferguson ‘67 (Erie, PA), February 18, 2021. He worked for Penelec in Western Pennsylvania for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, their daughter, and a grandson. Joseph K. Kindig, III ‘41 (Lancaster, PA), September 4, 2021. He attended the York Collegiate Institute and served in World War II before attending Amherst College. A world-class antiquarian and historian, he was responsible for the preservation of the Golden Plough Tavern/ Gates House in York. He received the Antiques Dealers’ Association of American Award of Merit in 2008. Franklin R. King ‘72 (Red Lion, PA), August 29, 2020. He served in the U.S. Army and owned and operated Score King Bowling Lane Company with his father. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Deanie, and their daughter, Josie. Stephanie L. (Wallis) Kirk ‘04 (York, PA), June 16, 2022. She worked at Catholic Charities, Hoffman Homes, and the Social Security Administration. She is survived by her husband, James, and their two children.
Eugene L. Mariani, Jr. ‘75 (Phoenixville, PA), January 14, 2021. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked for many years in quality control with companies such as GE and Community Professional Loudspeakers. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, and their daughter. Linda Kay (Sprenkle) Neely ‘60 (York, PA), January 10, 2021. She worked as a medical technologist at York Hospital for 43 years until her retirement in 2004. She was Head of Urinalysis and Parasitology and taught medical technology students from the College while she was there. She is survived by her son and her siblings. Lois L. (Miller) Nicholas ‘78 (York, PA), January 19, 2021. She taught elementary school in the Eastern York School District for 33 years until her retirement. She is survived by her husband, Terry, and their two children. Wenda L. (Weller) Newhouse ‘87 (Kalamazoo, MI), May 31, 2022. She worked as a nurse and for the Upjohn Company in New Product Development. She was an active volunteer in her community including the Food Bank of South Central Michigan, where she also served on the board. She is survived by her husband, Jeff.

Lynn R. Reynold ‘65 (Springboro, OH), June 15, 2022. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the Marine Corps Reserves, and worked at LexisNexis in Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kerry, and their two children. Rodney E. Rooney ‘53 (York, PA), February 2, 2021. He attended York Junior College as well as Millersville State University and Arizona State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He retired in 1985 after 30 years of teaching and managing libraries in the Baltimore County Public School system. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara. Kenneth N. Ross MBA ‘92 (Mechanicsburg and Gettysburg, PA), April 21, 2022. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from ITT Inc. in Human Resources. He is survived by his partner, Kelly Alsedek, one daughter, two sons, and five grandchildren. Mary Ann Rothert ‘62 (Philadelphia, PA), June 7, 2022. Known professionally as Dr. Jude Damian, she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1967. She had previously attended York Junior College and Millersville State University and became a registered medical technician in 1964. She received her Doctorate in Medical Arts in 1976. She is survived by her three siblings.
Rev. Melvin G. Swoyer ‘62 (Round Rock, TX), October 10, 2020. He attended York Junior College and Valparaiso University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and completed officer candidate school. He was ordained in 1973 after graduating from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gaile, and their children. Lisa R. (Heuberger) Uffelman ‘07 (York, PA and Ocean Pines, MD), January 5, 2021. She worked as a real estate agent and with Visiting Angels. She is survived by her husband, Michael, and her sisters. Susan E. (Stough) Van Wy ‘08 (York, PA), January 3, 2021. She worked as a registered nurse and was a member of Living Word Community Church. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Wes, and their two sons. H. Wendell White ‘43 (York, PA), May 17, 2021. He attended York Junior College as well as Franklin & Marshall College, and the University of Phoenix. He enlisted in the U.S. Maritime Service in December 1942 and served on active duty in World War II. He owned and operated E.T.F. Business Systems in Central Pennsylvania and was a 70-plus year member of his local Zeredatha Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alice, and their three sons.
FRIENDS Irene E. (Jurbala) Austin (Dover, PA), December 16, 2021. She was a Professor of Biology at the College for 30 years, retiring in 1999, and was the first woman to serve as Faculty Senate President. She is survived by her two children and three grandchildren.
