YORK COLLEGE OF PENNSYLVANIA York College of Pennsylvania is an independent, comprehensive, private college offering majors in the arts and sciences as well as professionally-oriented programs of study. York is nationally recognized for its high quality academic programs, friendly campus atmosphere, and affordable cost. Emphasis is placed upon a superior teaching faculty, the majority of whom hold doctorates. More than four thousand one hundred undergraduate students and two hundred forty graduate students represent some thirty states and fifteen foreign countries. York offers over fifty undergraduate majors in the arts and sciences and in professional fields as well as master’s programs in business, education and nursing and a doctoral program in nursing.

The history of York College is long and varied. In 1787, the York Academy was formed. It merged in 1929 with the York Collegiate Institute, which was founded in 1873. The York Collegiate Institute became York Junior College in 1941 and, in 1968, York College of Pennsylvania.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER The Honorable Tom Wolf Governor of Pennsylvania

Thomas Wolf was elected governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in November 2014. He is the former chairman and CEO of his family’s business, The Wolf Organization. Prior to being elected governor, Wolf served as Pennsylvania’s secretary of revenue under Gov. Ed Rendell.

Wolf is a longtime supporter and advocate of York College. He serves as a trustee emeritus member of the Board of Trustees and is former chairman of the York College Board of Trustees, a position from which he resigned when he became secretary of revenue.

He served on the “A Time to Act” Campaign Steering Committee and was a member of York College’s Collegiate Council before becoming a trustee. In 2006 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the College.

His leadership has long benefited all of the York community. He is the former chairman of the board of the York County Chamber of Commerce, the former chairman of the board at WITF Public Broadcasting, former chairman of the York County Community Foundation, and the former chairman of the board of the United Way of York County.

He also served as president of Better York, Inc.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Mr. Anthony Campisi

Anthony Campisi is a 1976 York College graduate. Campisi serves as a trustee emeritus of York College and chairs the Center for Community Engagement Advisory Board. Campisi previously served as a member of York College’s Collegiate Council. He served on the “A Time to Act” Campaign Steering Committee and was the 2011 recipient of the College’s Professional Leadership and Service Award.

Campisi has been the president/CEO of Glatfelter Insurance Group since 2000.

Before becoming president, he was the executive vice president/operations from 1994-1999 and vice president/finance from 1983-1993. He serves as president of the Arthur J. and Lee R. Glatfelter Foundation.

Campisi’s service to the community extends well beyond his involvement with his alma mater. He serves as board chair for the Cultural Alliance of York County, president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation, and past chair and board member of Junior Achievement of South Central PA. He is also a member of the board of Better York and Crispus Attucks, and an advisory board member for Downtown, Inc and York Habitat for Humanity. Campisi serves as cochair of the York County History Center Capital Campaign, as honorary chair of the YMCA Capital Campaign, and as a member of the York Area Capital Campaign Review Association. He is also a member of the PA Early Learning Investment Commission and of the United Way of York Tocqueville Committee.

RECOGNITION OF RETIRING FACULTY DR. NORMA BEYER retires from The Stabler Department of Nursing where she has been a full-time faculty member since 2004. She earned a B.S. from University of Maryland Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing, an M.S. from University of Maryland, and the D.N.P. from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Beyer taught in courses across the undergraduate curriculum: Human development, health assessment, fundamentals, medical-surgical nursing, obstetric nursing, pediatrics, community health, and nursing practicum. In the community, she represented the Stabler Department of Nursing on the planning committee for the annual Collaborative EBP and Research conference for a number of years. As a long-term member of the Eta Eta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing, she served as President of the chapter from 2007-2009.

DR. CINDY DOUTRICH retires from The Department of English and Humanities where she has been a professor of Spanish since 1987. She earned her B.S., M.A., M.Ed., and Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Doutrich served for many years as the coordinator for foreign languages and as a member of the College’s tenure and promotion committee, as well as many other academic senate committees. In her tenure at YCP, Dr. Doutrich established successful Spanish immersion programs in Cuernavaca, Mexico (1990-2014), Monteverde, Costa Rica, and San Juan Puerto Rico, with Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. Her curricular work includes being a major contributor to the Spanish major and Spanish Secondary Education major proposals. Dr. Doutrich is a frequent presenter at foreign language conferences and is the author of acclaimed and widely used Spanish textbooks, Nuevos Destinos: Spanish in Review (McGraw-Hill, 2003) and Senderos: Communicacion y Conversacion en Español (with Norma Rivera-Hernández, Heinle 2012).

DR. PAUL DOUTRICH retires from the Department of History and Political Science where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1988. He earned a B.A. from the University of Kentucky, an M.A. from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. During his time at York College, Dr. Doutrich served as the advisor for the Department’s undergraduate research journal, Past & Present, for which he was a mentor for scores of students who wanted to learn more about soliciting, reviewing, editing, and publishing scholarly research. He also served on nearly every Standing Committee of the Academic Senate, as well as serving as chair on several. A prolific author, he has published numerous articles and books in the field of American history.

PROFESSOR MARIE DUNSTAN retires from the Department of Physical Sciences where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1981. She earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Lebanon Valley College and an M.S. degree in Clinical Chemistry from SUNY Buffalo. She has co-authored publications in the area of virology. She has served as Coordinator for the Medical Laboratory Science program since its inception, assisting numerous students in preparing for and securing hospital placements. Professor Dunstan has also developed the chemistry curriculum taken by nursing students.

DR. SARDARI KHANNA retires from the Department of Physical Sciences where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1965. He earned a B.A. degree in Physics from Panjab University and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Sagar University. He has published many papers in the area of solid state physics and has co-authored a textbook which connects concepts of physics to everyday life. He remains active in the National Association of Physics Teachers as well as numerous community organizations including the Asian Indian Americans of Central PA and the York County Area Agency on Aging.

In his time at York College, Dr. Khanna developed an iconic presence - advising student groups, organizing large social events, managing and securing funds for the Academic Senate, including the scholarship which bears his name.

DR. THOMAS LEPSON retires from the Graham School of Business where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1970. He has served on numerous Academic Senate Committees as well as on the Boards of Memorial Hospital, the YMCA and York County Children and Youth Services. Yet, Dr. Lepson primarily made his mark in the classroom. Shortly after receiving his Ph.D. from the Union Graduate School in 1978, he founded the Polk-Lepson Research Group with another YCP colleague bringing real-world expertise and applications to the classroom and our students and to the community. His legacy of excellence in teaching, curricular innovation and program quality is honored and his expertise and experience will be much missed by his colleagues in the GSB and across campus.

PROFESSOR SUSAN MCMILLAN retires from The Schmidt Library where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1980. She earned her BA from York College of Pennsylvania and an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh. Sue has served the library as Head of Reference Services, Instruction & Government Documents, Head of Information Services, and Interim Library Director along with teaching the Library IFL 101 course and as the Library Liaison to the Graham School of Business and Department of English and Humanities. She served the faculty on the Curriculum and Catalog, Faculty Manual Review, and Promotion and Tenure Committees, and was Academic Senate Secretary.

PROFESSOR RICHARD OSBORN retires from the Graham School of Business where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1986, teaching extensively in both Marketing and International Business. He served as the College’s Tuition Exchange Officer coordinating this benefit for faculty and staff for over 20 years and was the founding advisor for the student chapter of the American Marketing Association. Rick’s community work with DreamWrights Theatre and other local performance groups in support of the arts is a definite passion. Rick will be most remembered for having helped develop and implement the International Business Major. He is committed to student engagement and academic service so much so that he has agreed to stay on as an adjunct faculty for our first foray into online undergraduate courses in International Business.

DR. ANDREW SUMUTKA retires from the Graham School of Business. He joined York College initially as an adjunct faculty member, and then was hired full time in 2006 as part of the then fairly new Supply Chain major where his previous industry expertise was invaluable. His academic service includes Senate Budget Committee, the Intellectual Property Task Force, the Environmental Resource Committee, Compensation Committee and the GSB Strategic Planning Committee as just a few examples of his willingness to work collegially and contribute broadly across the mission of both the School and the College all while serving as discipline coordinator. Andy is known for his easy-going manner, sense of humor and complete devotion to his students for whom he always goes the extra mile.

PROFESSOR CONNIE WERNER retires from the Department of Biological Sciences where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1981. She earned her B.S. from York College in the Health Record Administration program, and an M.S. in Instructional Development from Towson State University. For many years, she was the director of York College’s Health Record Administration program, then the Health Care Coding program in collaboration with York Hospital. Professor Werner’s dedication to her students through her teaching and mentorship has contributed significantly to the growth and change of the curriculum, within both the department and the College.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The medieval scholar wore a clerical robe so all would know his station in society. The clerical type robe was appropriate, since all students were expected to become part of the clergy. Distinctions have always been made among the academic grades. Thus, the robe of the doctor is more elaborate than that of the master and the master’s is different than the undergraduate student’s.

Academic regalia has always consisted of three parts – the gown, the hood, and the cap. There is considerable variation in European Universities. In 1893, a system was adopted in the United States so that one could tell at a glance the university where the degree was earned, the field of study in which the degree was earned, and the level of the earned degree.

Most robes are black, although occasionally a particular university may adopt a robe of another color such as Harvard in adopting the crimson as its own. Doctoral robes are longer, fuller, and more richly trimmed with bands of velvet down the front and on the sleeves. These can be black or symbolize a field of study. The master’s gown has sleeves usually cut above the elbow and the bachelor’s gown is a simple pleated robe.

The cap of most American universities is usually the stiff, square black traditional mortarboard with black tassel. The doctoral cap may have a gold tassel with the tassel worn on the left. Many European universities favor the soft beret-type cap and a few American institutions use this type.

The hood is the most interesting and colorful part of the regalia. The largest hood is the doctor’s while the smallest is the bachelor’s hood. The color, or colors, of the hood’s lining, arranged in chevrons, symbolizes the colors of the college or university which granted the degree. Thus, York College of Pennsylvania has chevrons of green and white. The velvet trim, visible at the neck, indicates the field of study in which the degree was earned. Some frequently seen hood colors and the fields of study are as follows: Golden yellow ~ Science White ~ Arts and Letters Light blue ~ Education

MACE The university mace, used during present day commencement and convocation exercises, has its roots in the 13th century when it was held by the protector of a sovereign at official meetings.

The College’s official mace, carried by the Head Marshal, was created by Edward Glatfelter ’48, and presented in 1961 to York Junior College President Dr. Ray Miller. It is comprised of two pieces of wood said to have come from the buildings of the oldest schools in the College’s lineage: York County Academy (1787) and York Collegiate Institute (1871). The smaller black maces, carried by other Marshals during the procession, are the earliest versions of the College’s academic mace, first used during the commencement exercises of 1959.

Using the College’s mace to lead the procession during commencement exercises has been a tradition for over fifty years.
