Recognizing Outstanding Spartans Everywhere

INTRODUCTION Greetings! The York College Year of 50 Spartans program was created in honor of the 50th anniversary of York College to recognize outstanding alumni who have demonstrated dedication, excellence, professional achievement, and, most importantly, a commitment to staying engaged with York College after graduating. This year’s inaugural 50 alumni award recipients represent just a sample of incredible success stories. Selected from more than 100 nominations, these entrepreneurs, executives, educators, public servants, and nonprofit leaders are innovators in their fields, inspiring their communities and motivating current and future Spartan leaders. A selection committee of alumni, students, and administrators worked diligently to review the applications to determine this year's inaugural class of outstanding Spartan leaders. Two of The Year of 50 Spartan recipients and a York College faculty member were then selected to receive awards of distinction from the Alumni Board of Directors: Distinguished Alumni Service, Distinguished Alumni Achievement, and Professional Service & Leadership. This publication showcases some of our best and brightest Spartans. We invite you to read more about their backgrounds and Spartan journeys online at www.ycp.edu/50Spartans. Go Spartans! EILEEN REAVEY '13

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Public Policy Political & Nonprofit Consultant, Reavey Consulting Portland, OR How York College Helped Me York College taught me how to be a professional and how to be a leader. Ample opportunities were put in front of me to learn, lead, and grow, and I benefited immensely from them.

ADRIENNE MCNEIL '98

Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration Assistant Vice President of Community Relations, Lehigh University Bethlehem, PA Greatest Achievement When I finish my PhD, I will consider that my greatest achivement. As of now, receiving the approval of my first three chapters is an accomplishment. How York College Helped Me My jobs at York College were communitybased. The networking, building relationships, and engaging with partners were an excellent start for my career and the position I have now at Lehigh University. Favorite YCP Professor I have two. I enjoyed the urban class I had with Dr. Mary Graham and the field trip to Baltimore. For me, it was a bonus to learn more about my hometown. I had multiple classes with Michael March. In those classes, we explored the role of people working in local government. In my current position, I interact with people working for the City of Bethlehem quite often. 2 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career Being able to work on projects you care about and feeling that you're making a positive impact in the world with your work is absolutely unparalleled. I am so grateful to be able to work on projects that I am passionate about. I took York College’s motto, “Servire Est Vivere” (To Serve Is to Live), to heart. Best Advice Received “That it's okay to say ‘no’ when people ask you to do things. You don't owe them your time and knowledge just because they asked.” —Rory Kraft, PhD At the time, I really needed someone to tell me this. Eventually, I realized the power in being selective about what you commit to. It's far better to know your limits and deliver your best as opposed to stretching yourself too thin.

JUSTIN KAUFFMAN '03

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Engineering Manager, Johnson Controls York, PA Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement has been learning to see challenges and opportunities through the eyes of others' broad perspectives. Throughout my career, I have had great opportunities to collaborate with an international team from different disciplines, backgrounds, and cultures, both in York, and more recently while working abroad in Wuxi, China. Learning to listen, see, and understand a problem from many different perspectives has greatly improved my ability to solve complex issues. How York College Helped Me York College prepared me in many ways; the technical coursework prepared me for success in engineering, while non-engineering classes helped to broaden my view of the world around me and foster a desire to learn. Beyond the classroom, the greatest resource for me at York was the engineering co-op program, which gave opportunities to solve practical, real-world problems in hands-on work experience, directly applying what had been studied in the classroom. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career Simply put, solving puzzles every day. Real-life engineering problems are rarely written as clearly as presented in a textbook, and can have many competing objectives and constraints. I enjoy continuing to learn how to break down new problems to understand design options and weigh alternatives in order to find optimal solutions. THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS | 3

KARA SKAFLESTAD '04

Bachelor of Science in Marketing Marketing Manager, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Founder and Executive Director, Fighting Pretty Portland, OR Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement has been the opportunity to merge my passion with my career. I enjoy helping people and creating relationships, and as the founder of an organization that empowers women to feel strong and beautiful, and a marketing professional who educates patients on oncology services, I feel lucky to go to work every day. How York College Helped Me York College taught me a lot about myself. I have an entrepreneurial spirit, and going to York enabled me to test-drive that aspect of myself, and ultimately gave me the confidence to go out into the real world and start my own organization and go after what I believed in. 4 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

Favorite YCP Course/Professor My favorite class was marketing because it taught me about the relationship between creativity and business. Taught by Professor Mark Blake, that class really hit the sweet spot for me. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career Working at OHSU in marketing for oncology, I love that I can yell from the rooftops all of the amazing cancer discoveries we are making here to change the scope of cancer care. As the founder of Fighting Pretty, I enjoy interacting with women who have been touched by our brand and are truly empowered to fight through their battle with cancer.

BRIAN BIDDULPH-KRENTAR '97 Bachelor of Science in Informatics Consultant, BK Consulting Group West Chester, PA

Greatest Achievement Starting three companies in the healthcare technology field. I love executing my ideas and building and developing teams. Shaping the culture is very important to me, and building success together is what gives me the greatest satisfaction. How York College Helped Me YCP taught me how to learn, how to be prepared, and gave me the confidence to meet challenges head-on. Favorite YCP Professor Dr. Bill Eddins was the professor who made me want to pursue technology. He took an interest in his students and their future and even helped me by answering questions during my first job after graduation.

KENNETH COLLOTON '76

Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Management Self-Employed as a Principal Consultant, Level 5 Global Governance & Leadership East Greenbush, NY Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement is being elected to be President of the World Alliance of YMCA's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The World YMCA is the largest youth organization (and one of the largest nonprofits) in the world located in 120 countries. I was the first American elected in 30 years for that prestigious position. Best Advice Received My best advice came from my York College Accounting Professor, John Barber. Professor Barber noticed that I enjoyed "people business" as he watched me pledging Omega Theta Chi. When I was a junior at York enrolled in advanced accounting courses, he recommended that I double up over the next two years and take as many Management courses as I possibly could. Professor Barber believed that I could use my accounting proficiency, but also enjoy (and be good at) managing and leading people. THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS | 5

MAKAYA REVELL '15

Bachelor of Arts in International Relations President, Marie Mambu Makaya Foundation York, PA

LAUREN HENRY '89

Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication Senior Principal Operational Specialist, Johnson & Johnson West Chester, PA Greatest Achievement One of my proudest moments was getting into grad school at Penn State in 2005 (16 years after graduating from York), graduating with a 4.0, winning the best student award for my major, and getting my thesis published. How York College Helped Me York College got me where I was today by giving me a good foundation. I was a Speech Communication major, and the classes I took really taught me how to speak. If you're a good speaker, you can pretty much talk yourself in and out of any situation. This was helpful getting me through my long and winding career path. Best Advice Received Someone along the way told me to say yes to opportunities, because you never know where they'll take you. I am living proof that it works. 6 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement is creating the Marie Mambu Makaya Foundation. We have created an orphanage in Kinshasa, Congo DRC. We have taken in our first babies and have started them on their way to safe, secure childhoods so they will become educated, healthy adults. How York College Helped Me York College not only educated me, it also helped me to organize my knowledge and mobilize my efforts to be where I am today. It enabled me to introduce our foundation to the public. Academically and professionally, York College is always with me. Favorite YCP Course/Professor York College professors are the best. Just to name a couple: Dr. Hazem Salem, Government and Politics of the Middle East, who inspired me to do my best work and to pursue graduate studies and Dr. David Fyfe, Introduction to Geography, who inspired me to introduce the Marie Mambu Makaya Foundation to the York College community.

ANDREW RITTER, JR. '05

Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government Vice President - Government Relations, Range Resources Camp Hill, PA Greatest Achievement While I am proud of numerous professional achievements and projects, one of my greatest achievements was my role in ushering through the passage of unemployment compensation reform in Pennsylvania in 2012. While it is a somewhat unheralded law, it solved a public policy problem that many thought impossible to remedy with legislation. Favorite YCP Course/Professor Professor Van Tassel's Constitutional Law class taught me how to look at public policy issues and laws in a critical way and to be able to see all sides of an issue. To this day, I still read opinions with the same critical eye.

AMY YARLETT '01

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Director of Exploratory Studies, Widener University Springfield, PA Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement, being a first-generation college student, is that I earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, and I am the first in my family to earn a master's degree. I am very fortunate to be in a profession that is rewarding, meaningful, makes an impact in students' lives, and is enjoyable! How York College Helped Me The numerous positive experiences that I had at York College led me to a career in higher education. I had a helpful and personable academic advisor during my time at York College who impacted my interest in academic advising. The organizations that I was a part of made me realize how much I enjoyed working with college students.

NICK BRADY '10

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Team Leader/Behavior Counselor, River Rock Academy Spring Grove, PA How York College Helped Me York College was pivotal in making me the person that I am and where that person is today. Through small-class settings, knowledgeable faculty, and the mandatory internship, I was able to hit the ground running once I joined the workforce. Athletically, I was able to enjoy a basketball career in a program that helped groom and grow my abilities, which eventually helped me land a contract playing professionally in Iceland. However, once the ball stopped bouncing and my final exam was turned in, that's when the real magic of York College started to show. I met my wife, Amanda, at York College, and it was instantly the biggest impact that the College had on my life. Favorite YCP Coach Outside of the classroom: When my final game was finished at York College, I was asked in an interview about my time spent in the men's basketball program. My response was, "If I were to go back and had the chance to re-choose my school, I would still choose York College every time because of Former Coach Jeff Gamber and Former Assistant Coach Dean Gamber." If someone were to ask me that same question today, my answer would still be the same.

KEVIN SCHREIBER '02

Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations President & CEO, York County Economic Alliance York, PA Greatest Achievement Marrying a York College alumna. Second to that, graduating from York College and having the privilege to spend my entire professional career working in York for the betterment of York, and doing so through an evolution of roles: first for our City, then from the PA State House, and now overseeing our York County Economic Alliance. How York College Helped Me York College introduced me to the York community, for which I have been working since graduating in 2002. YCP provided the technical training in the classroom, but more broadly through the York College network, I have served the community and have remained connected to the College through all facets of my career. It is safe to say that I would not have had the career that I do without the foundation being built upon by York College. 8 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

AMY BRINTON '01

Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education, Social Studies Government Affairs Manager, Duquesne Light Company Dover, PA How York College Helped Me York College is where I first found my passion and love for politics and government. During my time at York, my educational experience, combined with the support and encouragement of the teaching staff, challenged me to be the best version of myself. As a result, I not only grew personally and educationally, but developed and refined those skills that benefit me in my profession on a daily basis. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I enjoy the personal relationships I've built, maintained, and continue to build over the course of my career. I've had the opportunity to work with a variety of talented and intelligent people on a wide range of issues. Many of these relationships have also developed into lasting friendships over the years. During my time working for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, I had the honor of working on and helping to pass laws that benefit Pennsylvania’s veterans and emergency responders. Now, in my current role as Government Affairs Manager for an electric distribution company, I get to work on a variety of interesting issues including nuclear energy, development and expansion of electric vehicles, and other issues related to a clean energy future. BENJAMIN DOYLE '10

Bachelor of Science in Biology Managing Consultant, The Bonadio Group York, PA How York College Helped Me York College prepared me through academic rigor, direction, and accountability. It prepared me by reinforcing values of hard work, resilience, and perseverance. Just as important, the culture of York College also focused on the value of kindness, empathy, and compromise. All of these lessons were essential in shaping the person I am today.

LOIS GROVE '43

Associate Degree, York Junior College Retired Piano Teacher York, PA Greatest Achievement Besides producing a wonderful, loving family and having our two sons reach their goals, I am proud of the many lives I have touched with my music. How York College Helped Me In the first two years at YJC, there were no music classes offered. We did, however, have three excellent professors who taught in their own studios as part of the College curriculum. I studied with all three, and this background gave me the start of my career. Best Advice Received My parents instilled a strong work ethic and consideration for others in their children. Growing up on a farm, we were responsible for many chores. They also believed in a good education for their children, with their contribution of part-time work. I have followed this advice and work ethic, and appreciate its value. 10 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I greatly enjoy my role in being able to assist organizations in becoming more secure. The field of cybersecurity has grown immensely in the past decade, and will only further expand as technology continues to evolve. This provides the opportunity for constant learning, which I am extremely passionate about.

RANDY GAECKLER '86 Bachelor of Science in Marketing Senior Vice President, iHeartMedia Atlanta, GA

How York College Helped Me YCP introduced me to so many people that really helped shape my life. Many of those ties are still in my world and I consider them a valuable part of who I am. In a way, I learned how to think at York College. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I’m part of a great team at iHeartMedia. Of course, there have been some changes over the years, but there is a core group of folks that I’ve worked alongside for a long time. They’re my work family. We all work hard for common goals, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for them. Many people spend a large amount of their life at their place of employment. If you don’t enjoy your work family, you’re probably not going to enjoy most of your day. I feel very fortunate to have a great work family.

MELISSA APPNEL '03

Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education Director of K-12 Education & Assessment, West York Area School District York, PA Favorite YCP Course/Professor Dr. Richard Mauro was my Education Law and Ethics professor, and I hit the jackpot having him as my student-teacher supervisor. He was always willing to give strong feedback for growth, which helped immeasurably. Whether it was an apostrophe or management strategy, I could always count on him for honest feedback, which helped me grow and make an impression in my district. I feel like I need to give Dr. Tony Fredericks a shout-out, too. He relentlessly reminded us that in the real world, projects are never finished and we have to be open to feedback. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I love the impact and influence we have over creating the leaders of tomorrow. In my classroom, I was able to create a space where everyone was loved and could grow. I like to believe the same was true on a larger scale as an elementary building principal, which I was able to do for nearly a decade. Now, in my role as a director, I am able to work with passionate teachers at such a larger scale and impact all of the students in our community. THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS | 11

MATT CLARK '11

Bachelor of Science in Sport Management Director of Group Tickets & Hospitality, San Diego Padres San Diego, CA How York College Helped Me Networking... networking... networking! I was a big fish in a small pond and it gave me access most would only dream of. Favorite YCP Professor Professor Susan Klinedinst. She was more than just a professor, but also someone that I knew always had my back as a person! Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career Calling Petco Park (home to the San Diego Padres) my home while guiding others to get to where they want to be.

THOMAS SPRAY-FRY '00

Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance Certified Financial Planner™ Practitioner, Self-employed, Heritage Financial Consultants, LLC Phoenix, MD How York College Helped Me The education was real. It pushed me to get internships, which in my senior year got me to the broker/dealer I have been with for over 18 years. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career Helping people fund and achieve their goals. It is so gratifying. Greatest Achievement The creation of my family. I have a very supportive wife and two healthy and sweet boys.

TERRIE SMITH DUCRAY '76 Bachelor of Science in Psychology Retired Entrepreneur Longboat Key, FL

How York College Helped Me I use the knowledge gained in every aspect of my life from my jobs to my personal relationships with people. YCP professors helped me to understand the basics by keeping classes small and encouraging student participation rather than lecture platforms. Greatest Achievement I have two. Graduating from college and securing my first professional job. I feel education is the key to a satisfying and successful life. As I look back on my achievements, I realize that none of them could have occurred without a great education. 12 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

ABHI KUDARAVALLI '17

Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine Medical Student and Second Lieutenant, United States Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Erie, PA How York College Helped Me York College did a great job preparing me academically, but it did an even better job preparing me as a leader. I was able to develop my leadership style and learn about how to best work with people with various strengths and backgrounds. Favorite YCP Course One of my favorite classes at York College was the Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds course held at York Hospital. For this class, a selected group of Pre-Med students were given the opportunity to attend lectures at the hospital, as well as shadow many of the residents. I strongly believe that this course gave me the insight and exposure I needed to solidify my decision to pursue a career as a physician. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career There is nothing in this world that I can imagine having as much fun doing as I can learning about the human body. For example, it is so fascinating to learn how some simple activities, like talking or walking, are actually very complicated; and if something goes wrong, we are developing more treatments every day to help remedy that. As an Officer in the Army, I have been given the incredible opportunity to continue to hone my leadership skills, as well as train closely with some of the most driven and ambitious people I've ever met. I am also eager to dive further into military medicine and learn about the cutting-edge healthcare advances that are being developed by our teams all over the world. Best Advice Received In her welcome speech, one of our Deans reminded us, "never forget about yourself." It can be so easy to get caught up in school and work that we run out of time in the day. It can be very beneficial to not only the task at hand, but also your health to set aside some time each day to look out for your well-being.

REP. SETH GROVE '02

Bachelor of Arts in Political Science: Public Administration State Representative, Pennsylvania House of Representatives York, PA How York College Helped Me York College provided me with the academics to be successful while providing the opportunity to work in my career field. Without York College, I wouldn’t have made the connections to advance nor gained the knowledge to excel in government. York College has been, and continues to be, a very important entity in my life. Favorite YCP Professor I had several outstanding professors at York College. I most enjoyed that my political science professors challenged students to really think through their political arguments. They played devil’s advocate, regardless of their own personal political persuasions. I really learned to listen and engage my classmates in respectful dialogue and find the middle ground of agreement to build trust and friendship. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career First and foremost, I enjoy helping people on a day-to-day basis. Helping your neighbor brings a sense of pride and accomplishment. Secondly, innovative problem-solving. Government already has a crisis and government usually has the same old solutions. I prefer to focus on innovation, or tackling an issue from a different perspective. Finally, I enjoy diving into the finances of the public sector. Money makes the world work and keeps government operational. Few people focus on the financing of state government within the legislative branch. 14 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

EMILY CONNORS '96

Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Administration Therapeutic Recreation & Life Enrichment Supervisor, Masonic Villages at Elizabethtown Red Lion, PA How York College Helped Me My love for therapeutic recreation began at York College. I was not aware of the profession until I researched the major. A few things that drew me to York College were the smaller class sizes and the opportunity to get involved in organizations and opportunities on campus. Right away, I became involved in the Recreation and Leisure Society. I also became an Orientation team member, tour guide and joined Phi Sigma Pi. I had the opportunity to begin developing my leadership skills at York College and had the support of my professors and advisors with whom I had developed relationships due to the small class sizes. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I absolutely love therapeutic recreation, leading people and teaching students. In my opinion, I have the best career. Every day, I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. Every day is different. I have the opportunity to be creative in order to develop individualized interventions to meet the various needs of the older adults I work with.

CRISTAL PEREZ-RODRIGUEZ '16 Bachelor of Science in Psychology HR Manager, Aspire Ventures York, PA

Greatest Achievement I would say that my greatest achievement is being a first-generation graduate in high school, undergrad, and graduate school. These achievements have served, and will continue to serve, as stepping stones in my family. This experience will allow me to help my future children, nieces, and nephews in aspects I had to figure out on my own with little help. How York College Helped Me I got to where I am now through YCP constructing a strong foundation. I remember my first course taught me how to write professional emails—as they say—from day one. YCP gave me plenty of chances to network, ask questions, and to build myself professionally.

LISA WILLIAMS '08

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Technical Solutions Engineer, AMETEK Spectro Scientific York, PA Greatest Achievement If I had to pick just one achievement, I would choose the work I've done within the American Standards of Testing and Materials (ASTM). ASTM is a worldwide standards organization designed to standardize scientific testing and engineering to support a safer, more efficient workplace and environment. How York College Helped Me York College was pivotal in giving me the tools and confidence to succeed as a working professional. The internship I started during my junior year at MRG Labs gave me so many different opportunities to apply my chemistry degree. My internship ultimately turned into a full-time job where I stayed for 11 years serving as Vice President of Sales and Operations.

KELLEY GIBSON '96

Bachelor of Arts in English President, Cultural Alliance of York County York, PA Greatest Achievement Coming to York to attend York College and then staying to make change, a life, and a family here has been my greatest achievement. Being able to jump into the York community and work to improve and grow York over the past 20 years has meant so much to me. How York College Helped Me I would not be in York without York College. Coming here, it felt like coming to the place I was meant to be. The skills and experience I gained from the faculty at York College gave me the abilities I needed to jump into community-building work very early on in York. With fellow York College alumni, we founded the York Young Professionals, created the very first First Friday events at Main Street York, and worked to bring new arts and culture experiences to York County through York City Special Events. If I had not come to York College, I would never have met my husband of 20 years and started our family. Favorite YCP Course/Professor Dr. Brian Furio has always been a source of knowledge and wisdom for me, and through his Persuasion and Public Speaking courses he really prepared me for the communication work that would be my career after graduating. I have enjoyed staying a part of York and seeing how many students of his are now leaders in York. 18 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

PASQUALE NOCERA '10

Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication Director of Strategy and Planning, Unqork Lawrence, NJ How York College Helped Me York College helped me build a strong foundation rooted in communication skills that have been key in my professional career. TERRY LIEB '72

Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Science National Certified Counselor and Pennsylvania Licensed Counselor, TLieb Counseling Mertztown, PA Greatest Achievement Finding the most amazing woman in the world and convincing her to marry me 46 years ago! Additionally, helping to develop and lead a nonprofit counseling and consulting agency for over 32 years, which provided a wide variety of professional services regardless of a person’s ability to pay.

Favorite YCP Course/Professor My favorite professor during my time at York College was Professor Lowell Briggs. Professor Briggs was dedicated and extremely passionate about his craft. He was incredibly supportive, but also a very fair critic. This taught me how to take criticism not as a personal attack, but rather see it as an opportunity to grow and improve. Through his courses, I always admired his passion and wanted to emulate that passion in my career. Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement to date has been completing my Master of Business Administration degree and being inducted into the international business school honor society while working a full-time job, buying a house, and having a newborn baby.

KRISTIE GALVANI '01

Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, Mass Communications Executive Vice President, Rubenstein Public Relations Seaford, NY Greatest Achievement Going from someone who was shy growing up and scared of public speaking to not only being an outgoing public relations practitioner, but also speaking in front of large groups. How York College Helped Me The hands-on approach of York College helped me build the confidence I needed to break out of my shell and build the skills necessary to succeed both professionally and personally. Best Advice Received It sounds clichÊ, but my dad always told me that life is a balance—you need to work hard and play hard.

TUCKER BEECHER '11

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Special Agent, Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General York, PA Favorite YCP Course/Professor My favorite class was White Collar Crime taught by Professor Mike Staub. This class opened my eyes to specialized policing that occurs in a state law enforcement agency with a variety of responsibilities, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. I wanted a career in law enforcement, but wasn't completely confident that I wanted to be in a police department focused on community policing. Professor Staub's class was engaging, eye-opening, and one of the most interesting classes I had. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career The day can be as exciting or typical as you desire. Your work can be as routine or meaningful as you want. I treat assignments and cases like puzzles, putting the pieces together and hopefully finding a positive resolution. 20 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

Bachelor of Arts in International Relations Advocacy Manager, York County Economic Alliance Mountville, PA How York College Helped Me YCP helped shape my aspirations and provided a second family and chances to test out my wildest ideas. YCP took an 18-year-old and gave him everything he needed or wanted to create the building blocks necessary to take on what the world would offer. Favorite YCP Professor Dr. Javier Aguayo does stand out. He challenged me and didn't allow me to settle for minimum effort. I had him for two different classes and he was my advisor. I asked him, “What is the best way to get the most out of my major? He offered, "Whenever you are studying a country or an issue, make it your job to be a citizen of the country or fully understand the sides of an issue. That will pay out in many ways." He was completely right, and this is advice I often use. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I get to work in the community I came to love. Additionally, I implement varying aspects of my knowledge from the classroom and extracurricular activities in multiple ways. THE THE YEAR YEAR OF OF 50 50 SPARTANS SPARTANS || 21 21

PATTI STIRK '87/MBA '99 Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and Master of Business Administration President and CEO, Star Systems Engineering, Inc. d/b/a/ SMALL STAR Art House York, PA

Greatest Achievement I am most proud of creating and operating three successful businesses in three unrelated industries (technology, real estate, and arts and entertainment) from start-up to maturity. I am also honored to serve on the Pennsylvania Commission For Women. The commission is responsible for advising the governor on policies and legislation that impact women, as well as identifying and supporting economic and civic opportunities for all Pennsylvania women. How York College Helped Me York College showed me firsthand how to efficiently use resources and build a quality organization. A wide variety of courses expanded my understanding of critical thinking, which helped me drive my business to new heights. My studies solidified my confidence and understanding of the business world and the importance of lifelong learning. And the experience of working with diverse people in both the classroom and on the athletic courts gave me something more important, the ability to collaborate and build teams that work. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career From a career perspective, I love networking to find the most efficient solutions to problems with a given set of constraints. In the technology field, the required rate of continual learning is staggering and I appreciate rising to the challenge. In the entertainment field, nothing is more satisfying than supplying an experience that causes people great happiness. 22 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

Greatest Achievement Professionally, I am so proud to be a small business owner. It is a great achievement to me to have a micro-business, By K Events and the York Flea, which provides space for York area artisans and makers to showcase their wares and collections. How York College Helped Me York College provided me with the opportunity to make lasting connections in my community and grow as a professional. I would not be where I am today without the relationships I made at YCP. Favorite YCP Course/Professor My favorite class at York College was Events and Promotions with Kelley Gibson '96. It was there that I found a way to merge my planning-oriented brain with my love for service to nonprofits. I don't think it ever dawned on me that I could serve my community through marketing and events until taking that class.

Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations Director of Marketing and Communications, RoundTable Strategic Solutions Baltimore, MD How York College Helped Me York College has shaped my life in so many ways – from knowledge and relationships to friendship and love. The courses in which I was enrolled, and the professors who shared their professional skill sets, enabled me to thoroughly learn about the industry of public relations. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career My favorite part of my career now is planning and implementing campaigns that allow me to see a return on investment (ROI) for the business. Developing multichannel campaigns that include standard marketing tactics, social media, marketing automation, partnerships, search engine optimization (SEO), and much more provides the organization a broader scope in raising brand awareness. I also love working with and mentoring intern assistants. It is so fun to share my industry, business, and life knowledge with them to help pave the way for them on the road to success. Best Advice Received Be humble and kind. My parents are great examples of doing good for others and not asking to be praised. They have always worked hard for my family and those less fortunate than us. Through their example, and the bond with my husband Shawn, we instill this value in our lives and those of our children. Sharing what we can—whether it is our time, talent, or resources—with those who need it is something we enjoy and we believe that everything comes back full circle. THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS | 25

Bachelor of Science in Marketing President of Super 8 by Wyndham Hotels, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts Mendham, NJ Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement was helping my mother raise her family of 12 children after my father passed away in 1995. With few resources, we were able to keep her home, send 11 children to college, and see nine out of 12 earn postgraduate degrees. How York College Helped Me The skills I developed during my time at York College gave me a solid foundation to launch my career in business. Even though I earned my MBA at another university, I still feel strongly that my York College undergraduate degree was the most valuable springboard to professional success. Favorite YCP Course/Professor I loved Advertising with Professor Lewis Small. He made it fun, incredibly interesting, and most importantly, made me believe that creativity has a place in a professional environment. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career I have been blessed to work at a company for 21 years that embraces creativity, rewards a strong work ethic, and develops its employees to take on responsibilities outside of their formal education. I have had amazing opportunities to work overseas and run diverse business units. But the best part of my career has been developing up-and-coming talent into seasoned professional leaders.

East Brunswick, NJ Greatest Achievement My greatest achievement has been balancing my life to fit in everything I have ever wanted. Each phase comes with its own achievements that I am very proud of. I held two jobs as a newlywed while attending graduate school, started a family and had three fantastic boys, and am facing the trials and tribulations of a medically handicapped child. I have also started a successful nonprofit organization and have held onto friendships from my childhood and my York College years. Each day, I awake grateful to be here to continue all I have started. How York College Helped Me York College gave me the confidence to be more outgoing and take risks without worrying about failing. Bachelor of Science in Sport Management Commissioner, Atlantic East Conference Lancaster, PA

Greatest Achievement Professionally, being named the firstever Commissioner of the Atlantic East Conference. Personally, being the mother of two amazing little boys and creating a wonderful family with my husband. How York College Helped Me York College prepared me in several ways. First, through the Sport Management Department I learned about professionalism and networking. Second through my experiences as a basketball student-athlete, where I enhanced my teamwork and leadership skills. Lastly, through my work with the York College Athletic Department which led to becoming an NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member (SAAC). My experiences as an NCAA SAAC member opened up so many doors for me. I probably wouldn't be where I am without that experience and the training I received at York College to prepare me to succeed on that committee.

Bachelor of Science in Sport Management, Marketing Director of Market Research, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Manorville, NY How York College Helped Me York College excelled at offering hands-on experiences. These experiences were not only resume builders, they taught me lessons beyond the classroom. I left with a portfolio of projects and a full resume that spoke right to the industry I wanted to get into, sports. I owe much of my early success to these experiences as it gave me a leg up on my competition. Through relationships with professors both current and past, the College continues to help me along my professional journey to this day. Favorite YCP Professor Dr. Timothy Newman was an engaging, intelligent, and great leader. He taught me to look at the bigger picture and to focus on the areas in the industry that appealed to me.

Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations Executive Director, Farm & Natural Lands Trust of York County York, PA How York College Helped Me If it wasn't for coming to York College, I likely would have never ended up in York, resulting in meeting my wife, Laura, eventually starting a family, working in land preservation, or living 'out in the country.’ Favorite YCP Professor The power trio of Professors Furio, Hall, and Briggs in the Public Relations and Communication departments taught me the importance of always listening first and being comfortable being myself. Most Enjoyable Aspect of My Career Running a small nonprofit requires wearing every hat and that teaches you all aspects of the business from the bottom up. 28 | THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS

TRAVIS OOT '14

Bachelor of Science in Accounting Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Trout, Ebersole & Groff, LLP Lancaster, PA How York College Helped Me York College enabled me to get involved and be myself. I was able to balance the ability to play four years of NCAA Division III men’s golf for the College, join a fraternity and become the president, tutor math at the Academic Support Center, meet the love of my life, and balance my academic studies of keeping up a 3.7 GPA before graduating with a degree in Accounting. York College pushed me to make the most out of my four-and-a-half years and set me up for success in my future endeavors. Best Advice Received "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." - Jim Valvano's ESPY speech in 1993. I know its not exactly advice from someone I know, but it was a speech that moved me when I first heard it. Those words from his speech are ones that I live by on a daily basis. One of my greatest qualities is my persistence to get something done. I don't quit on myself and I don't like to lose. Being a college athlete and, at times a stubborn individual, I know what I want and I go after what I want with everything I have. THE YEAR OF 50 SPARTANS | 29

COL. MELISSA HOFFMAN '91

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Bachelor of Science in Nursing Colonel and Deputy Chief, Army Nurse Corps, United States Army Fort Benning, GA Over the years, Melissa Hoffman '91 has had the opportunity to travel and serve all over the world with the U.S. Army. She has gained experiences in different cultures, climates, and medical positions; grown in her career and leadership; earned numerous awards through her military service; and, most importantly, saved many lives. Her military achievements are what make her this year’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award recipient. The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award recognizes exceptional achievement in either a career or community service. Born and raised in York, Hoffman attended Penn State in State College, but then returned to York with a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship to pursue nursing with York College. To Hoffman, YCP was not only affordable, but also gave her the foundation she needed to grow her career in the military nursing field. Growing up, Hoffman looked up to her father who was a Korean War Veteran. She knew she wanted to follow him into military life and found nursing to be her calling. Through her scholarship with ROTC, she had many opportunities to grow in leadership through her career with the military. After graduating from York College, Hoffman went on to earn her Master of Science degree in Nursing from George Mason University and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was one of only six army nurses to graduate out of about 350 graduates in the Carlisle program. Looking back, Hoffman still fondly remembers her first assignment with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Though now torn down, she recalls her time there as being the place where she met her husband and where her military nursing career first began. Currently, Hoffman is the Commander of Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Benning, Georgia. She plans to spend the next couple of years as the Commander, travel around the southern states with her husband, and pursue a doctorate degree in the executive nurse track. —by Colleen A. VIRGINIA BELL '87

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD Bachelor of Science in Health Records Administration Baltimore, MD Virginia Bell’s '87 love for York College of Pennsylvania is so strong that she has spent years giving back by participating on the Alumni Board of Directors (holding leadership positions and speaking at commencement), attending and helping at numerous college events, and staying connected with the College community. Her dedication to serving others and York College is what makes her this year’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient. The Distinguished Alumni Service Award recognizes exceptional service and commitment to York College. While these awards are not intended to be lifetime achievement awards, nominees should demonstrate a pattern of excellence over a period of time. To Bell, York College was the perfect fit and was also close to home. She knew she wanted to pursue a career in the healthcare field, but did not want to be a nurse or a doctor. After attending a career fair to familiarize herself with other positions, Bell found the best program for her was available at YCP. She chose to pursue the health information management field where she could best use her skills and talents to serve others. During her time on campus, Bell was immediately immersed into a life of service. Being a founding sister of Zeta Delta Phi at YCP, she spent much of her time outside the classroom serving the York community. She volunteered to help clean up the city, visit nursing homes, and assist at various community and college events. She recalls events such as “Tuck-ins” and “Merry Kiss-o-Grams” with her sorority sisters where they raised money to benefit the Salvation Army. After graduating from YCP, Bell entered the healthcare industry as a data analyst. As she gained more experience, she connected with other York College alumni in the field and advanced up the career ladder, excelling in the health information management field. In addition to her career, she considers some of her greatest achievements to be graduating from York College, serving as President on the Alumni Board of Directors, being a founding sister of her sorority, and becoming a homeowner. Currently, Bell is pursuing a Master's certificate in Human Resources from the University of Maryland Global Campus. She continues to stay connected with the York College Alumni Association. She plans to finish her master’s degree, continue volunteering with YCP, travel, and complete some remodeling of her home. She has successfully encouraged her godson to become part of the Spartan family, continuing her legacy at YCP. —by Colleen A. Karl, Writer, Office of Communications

TIMOTHY GARRISON, PHD

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP AWARD Dean Emeritus, Kinsley School of Engineering, Sciences and Technology Professor, Mechanical Engineering For the past 22 years, Dr. Timothy “Tim” Garrison has served the York College community in various roles and has helped to build the engineering program from the ground up to what is one of the biggest and most popular programs on campus today. Since his arrival, the program has grown over 600 percent in student enrollment and from one program to five. His years of hard work and dedication are what made him a strong candidate for this year’s Professional Service and Leadership Award. The Professional Service and Leadership Award is presented each year to a faculty member or administrator who has served the College community with great vision and distinction, and who has demonstrated the highest qualities and characteristics of leadership in the completion of his or her professional responsibilities. From a young age, Garrison has always been fascinated about how things worked. He likes to “tinker and understand things” and this led him to pursue a career in the engineering field. While working on his PhD, he taught summer courses in engineering where he discovered his love of teaching and interacting with students. His first position as a professor was with Louisiana State University. However, as a native Pennsylvanian, he missed home and wanted to move back closer to family. He was delighted to find a position with York College of Pennsylvania where he could help expand the then-new Mechanical Engineering program in 1997. In 2003, the Coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering Program retired, and Garrison was asked to step into this role. From there, he went on to further develop the engineering program, publish numerous professional publications, and receive awards for his work. In 2015, he became the inaugural chair of the Department of Engineering and Computer Science. As the chair, he developed a new program in civil engineering and began the development of a second engineering building since the existing programs had outgrown the Kinsley Engineering Center. The Civil Engineering Center opened its doors in fall 2018 and is adjacent to the Kinsley Engineering Center. Garrison retired in 2019 as the first-ever Dean of the Kinsley School of Engineering, Sciences and Technology. He leaves behind an atmosphere he helped to create and describes it as a “welcoming and pleasant homey environment.” His colleagues made “coming to work fun” and the College had the resources and support he needed to help build a quality product in the engineering program. His next chapter is yet unwritten. He plans to “not make plans” since most of his life has been about planning and structure. Now he and his wife want to just “wing it” and “take things as they come.” An avid photographer, Garrison looks forward to traveling and continuing to capture works of art around him through his camera lens. His service, vision, dedication to, and lasting impact on the program exemplify the qualities commemorated by the Professional Service and Leadership Award. —by Colleen A.
