WELCOME TO THE UNDEREXPOSED F I L M F E S T I VA L y c 2 0 1 5 !
In our 4th season, we are honored to present the fresh new voices of emerging filmmakers from around the globe to our audience. These talented storytellers come from diverse filmmaking backgrounds, but all have a common thread. To use the phrase “independent short film” is quite redundant. Shorts by nature are independent, made outside of the studio system, made without the hope of financial gain, and are only made because their creator has a passionate need to share this piece of themselves with their audience. The work of the filmmaker may be radical, eye opening, questionable, heartbreaking or cultural. The work can be dressed up as a tight narrative, a flowing stream of consciousness, metaphorically, or however the filmmaker chooses to tell the story. Short film is not governed or dictated by what is marketable, therefore the audience is exposed to bolder ideas, unique shooting styles and unconventional forms of narrative structures. Due to their length, short films engage their audience quickly resulting in an audience that becomes much more invested in what is on the screen, and often more open-minded about content. For filmmakers, the short can be seen as a means to educating one’s self to the art of film production. What little budget there is results in uncompromising creativity and imagination just to bring the film to fruition. More importantly for the filmmaker, the short film is like the needle of a compass. It points him in the direction of his style, his “North.”
KAREN COLLINS Festival Director
In 1998, Sophia Coppola directed the 14 minute short, “Lick The Star.” It featured elements of her future feature shooting style such as her unique way of cutting a scene and her imagery choices. The short gave the audience a glimpse of the artist she would become. Tonight, we, the audience, have the rare opportunity to have a glimpse at the work of this exciting new generation of filmmakers as they start their journey towards their “North.”
