The year 5 is often synonymous with the word milestone. For children, the 5th year sees progress in overall development. In marriage the 5th year is symbolized by wood for strength and solidification. In business the most crucial year is considered the 5th year, this year symbolizes survival. In 2012, I met the Arts Council and Terry Roueche for the first time when approached about a proposed film festival. Terry had long been a proponent of a film festival for York County and beyond. As a result of this collaboration, it was decided that we would create a festival highlighting short films. This festival would be an opportunity for independent filmmakers to have a platform where they could share their work. The festival would be an opportunity for our audience to view unique stories that would never come to the multiplex. Most importantly, the festival would showcase and help grow the local film industry. The mission became to seek out the “undiscovered gems,” and bring them to our community. Thus, Underexposed Film Festival yc was born. 2012 was very ambitious. The challenge was to put forth a call for entries as an unknown festival, a festival that was completely without reputation. Would anyone enter? The first year saw the screening of 9 films from the region in competition and a selection of non-competition films from around the country. It is those 9 filmmakers and our first audiences that reinforced the need for a film festival in York County, SC. By year 2, the Underexposed Film Festival yc had grown into an international short film festival screening films made from as close as Old Town Rock Hill to as far away as New Zealand. Over the past five years, UFFyc has screened 275 films from 46 countries made on 6 continents. Our audience has been exposed to films that entertained, challenged. shocked, baffled and enlightened them. We wish to thank the # filmmakers who have attended the festival, our jurors, and audiences of 5 years. It is by your participation that Underexposed Film Festival yc developed, strengthened and survived. Five years in the making, we hope you enjoy our 2016 festival.

Current technologies have so dramatically reduced the time it takes to collect and transport information of past events that virtual facsimilies can be experienced almost simultaneously. Psychologically, that can make it seem as if past events have no experiential distance or lapse of time between “here” and “now,” a subtle alteration of experiencing “place” and “time.” Coupled with how virtual information is often viewed as simulacrum, the copy is more real than the “original.” It is easy to see how our perception of time and place, of history itself, has become altered.

Part exercise of passion, and part love letter, Sisters is a fragment of some lost, tragic opera. Trapped in the ruins of their former glory, a pair of performers bound together and abandoned by time rise up to sing once more.
