WELCOME TO THE 2018 UNDEREXPOSED FILM FESTIVAL yc! On behalf of the Arts Council of York County, welcome to the 7th season of Underexposed Film Festival yc. It is our pleasure to screen 47 independent short films from 21 countries and all 7 continents. “I foresee no possibility of venturing into themes showing a closer view of reality for a long time to come. The public itself will not have it.What it wants is a gun and a girl.”- D.W. Griffith How different the world of filmmaking has become since Griffith made this assumption. Griffith was speaking from the perspective that one must make films for consumption not for the sake of art or for the story. Griffith’s statement reflects a view of the time that one must turn out a “product” with a proven formula. Fortunately, this carbon copy style of filmmaking has given way to making very personal stories whether fictional or reality driven.

CONTENTS

C LEGEND

KAREN COLLINS

Films are no longer just a gun and a girl but often now are a girl and her camera. Men and women get behind their camera and dare to push aside the question Is this commercially viable? Instead they concentrate on making the film that at first was a faint murmur but became a pounding in their chest and that burst forth onto the screen. Often taking risks, filmmakers are staying true to themselves and in doing so have helped change the way the audience consumes film.
