MISSION & VISION: It is the mission of the Arts Council of York County to create arts programming that encourages education, economic development and arts advocacy through unique art experiences that engage the community to make York County a regional arts destination. It is the vision of the Arts Council of York County to create a thriving, diverse and vibrant arts community in York County. WHO WE ARE: Founded in 1977, the Arts Council of York County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in York County, SC. We manage a small grant program, provide studios, galleries and performing arts space, summer camps, and arts education programs.

As a thriving arts organization with 70+ arts events each year, we invite you to enjoy visual arts exhibitions, art classes and workshops, festivals, concerts, creative short story and poetry contests, and a variety of other programs. The Arts Council operates two facilities along Main Street: the Center for the Arts at 121 E. Main St. and the Gettys Art Center at 201 E. Main St, with four full-time and three part-time staff members, governed by a 25-person board of directors. The annual budget of $400,000 - $450,000 is supported through a combination of grants, individual and corporate membership donations, earned income and ticket sales. ART: The arts enrich our lives, build bridges between cultures, promote a strong sense of community and provide opportunities for economic and cultural growth. Rock Hill was the first state-designated Cultural District in South Carolina. In 2016 we completed a year-long Arts & Economic study. It indicates the nonprofit arts and culture sector is a $27 million industry in York County - one that supports 846 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $2 million in local and state government revenue.

Many thanks to our patrons for their local support. In addition to our sponsors and contributors who help sustain the arts, we also thank the artists and musicians, actors and workshop leaders, teachers, administrators, and board members who keep our Council running smoothly and help us brand York County as a regional arts destination.

A RT I ST WORKSHOPS C R E AT I V E C O L O R I N T H E L A N D S C A P E with Lyn Asselta | September 10 - 12, 2018 | 10 AM - 4 PM

This 3-day workshop will take you briefly through some basic work with color and then move into more creative uses of color in the landscape. We’ll focus on ways that color can help you be more expressive with your paintings and you’ll have the opportunity to explore color as an emotional element in your work. The goal of this class is not only to help you take your paintings from the everyday to the extraordinary, but to help you achieve a more fearless, intuitive approach to color. If you feel you are too timid with color, this class is definitely for you!

C I T YS C A P E S I N O I L O R PA ST E L with Desmond O’Hagan | November 2 - 4, 2018 | 10 AM - 4 PM O’Hagan will emphasize composition, developing technique through a more painterly approach, and the importance of values and contrasts. Along with informal daily talks on a variety of painting topics, there will be hands-on, individual instruction and critiques. Students are encouraged to move out of their “comfort zone” and experiment with new ideas in technique and subject matter. Each day will include a demonstration in oil or pastel.

F I N D I N G T H E L I G H T I N WAT E R C O L O R S with Valdislav Yeliseyev | February 4 - 6, 2019 | 10 AM - 4 PM “The Challenge with watercolor,” Vlad explains, “is to achieve richness in color and not to lose the transparency.” Vlad came to the US from Moscow in the 1980s, educated in classical art and architecture. Using a limited palette and brushwork, he has a unique ability to depict reflected light in his cityscapes and seascapes. His work has earned him numerous awards throughout the world.

T H E S E A S O N A L L A N D S C A P E I N PA ST E L with Jacob Aguiar | March 16 - 18, 2019 | 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM In this workshop, Jacob will guide you through his process of creating pastel landscape paintings in the studio utilizing plein air studies and photo references. He will focus on the foundations of successful, representational art, including composition, values, color, and drawing, including specific exercises such as crating notions, small color studies, and underpainting techniques. Each day will include at least one demo, followed by ample time for students to paint with assistance from Jacob at their easels.

Level: Intermediate to Master

Classes will be held in the Edmund D. Lewandowski Classroom at the Center for the Arts

YORK COUNTY

HERITAGE QUILT TRAIL a part of the South Carolina Quilt Trails

South Carolina offers a rich tapestry of life, often expressed through the artistry and craftsmanship of quiltmaking. York County, SC joined the South Carolina Quilt Trails in 2012 with the installation of two quilt blocks, one at Windy Hill Orchard & Cidery and another at the Center for the Arts. Since then, six additional quilt blocks have been created. (Partially funded by the York Electric Cooperative Inc.) Many are on-site along the Ag + Art Tour of York County. Each year, the Arts Council of York County plans to add quilt blocks to farms participating the Ag + Art Tour of York County.
