WELCOME TO THE UNDEREXPOSED F I L M F E S T I VA L YC 2 0 1 4 !

In 2012, the Arts Council of York County, recognizing the effect that film can have on an audience as a creative art form, launched the Underexposed Film Festival yc. In its inaugural year, the festival’s juried portion featured regional films, while the Director’s Choice invitational selections looked toward the future of an international short film festival. Now in its 3rd year, the Underexposed Film Festival yc presents films representing 6 continents – from as close as studio artists housed in facilities managed by the Arts Council of York County to as far away as Australia. The world has answered our call, and the result is three days that will challenge, enlighten, and inspire our audience, leaving it forever changed. We wish to congratulate our 29 competition films for their achievements. Each film exudes creativity and showcases the filmmaker’s passion for their craft. These attributes are reflected on the screen. We wish to thank our 20 Director’s Choice filmmakers for sharing their stories with us, this year in particular. In 2013, when Hollywood released just one major motion picture by a woman; we have chosen to highlight the accomplishments of women in film; many of our Director’s Choices feature films spearheaded by women. It is the independent film circuit that has embraced the idea that women’s visions are powerful, creative, and unique works of art that deserve their time in the spotlight.

When asked about being a woman working in Hollywood in an interview published by The New Republic (newrepublic.com), Jill Soloway, director of Afternoon Delight and Una Dia Por Favor (UFFyc 2012), comments, “I look at the Oscars and the five male directors who were nominated and the five screenwriters who were nominated. And I think about what I went through to get Afternoon Delight made, to have my voice heard and to look up and see that it doesn’t really matter.” The Underexposed Film Festival yc congratulates these women and salutes all of our filmmakers for taking chances, and for risking much to have their voices heard.
