“
Our committee is comprised of the best student journalists in the country with a wide range of fields covered. I decided to bid for SPANC because this committee can not only showcase the brilliant work that our student media does here at York, but also give student publications a great experience where they can gain skills and make connections. - Chay Quinn, Co-Chair

location York is in North Yorkshire and is an ideal location for national events. York Station is in the middle of the Inter City East Coast line between London King’s Cross and Inverness meaning there is easy access to the city from London and the surrounding areas and, crucially, Scottish stations. The station is situated in the middle of the city centre and is a walkable distance away from the University with many sights of historic York along the way. There is also a regualr bus which will take you to outside the Library. There are direct trains every day from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. There is also easy access from Leeds (22mins via rail), Sheffield (46 mins via rail) and other Yorkshire locations.

SPRING LANE BUILDING The Spring Lane Building opened its doors in October 2016 after a £13.8 million investment. The building has modern meeting spaces, including a 350-seat lecture theatre, 26 seminar rooms, and versatile meeting areas. With its state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities and easy accessibility at the heart of campus, it is the ideal location for SPANC ‘19.
facilities The Spring Lane Building can easily accommodate the delegates for both the large and small events of the conference. Due to its prime location in the middle of the University campus, the building can function as the centre of the conference. The building is readily accessible from anywhere on campus and from town by foot or bus. The 66 and 66a buses stop directly outside. The large 350-seat lecture theatre is perfect for the keynotes, the welcome and leaving addresses, and the AGM. The building’s smaller seminar rooms are suitable for the training sessions and speaker sessions throughout the conference. The 350-seat lecture theatre and the smaller seminar rooms are all in one building, allowing delegates to move freely between sessions. The Spring Lane Building is ideal for SPANC ‘19 due to its amazing facilities, ready accessibility and modern AV equipment.

ENTERTAINMENT There are many great entertainment options we can provide for SPANC ‘19. Along with the formal in the Roger Kirk Centre, there are half a dozen exciting entertainment events available to delegates across the weekend, most of which can be easily accessible on University campus. These events can provide great ice-breaking opportunities for delegates at the conference to get to know each other and network with other students and leaders in the industry. Delegates arriving on the Friday will be treated to a mixer event at which there will be a variety of cocktails and mocktails available. This will take place in the Students’ Union bar The Lounge, which is next door to the Roger Kirk Centre and is easily accessible. Arriving delegates will get to know other student journalists for the first time over popular drinks.
The City of York has a wide variety of bars and delegates can participate in a bar crawl to get a taste of on of the UK’s most beautiful cities. Participants can get to know each other as they are guided on a tour of some of York’s most popular nightlife spots.
Students could participate in a pub quiz in The Lounge. A pub quiz is an excellent opportunity for delegates to socialise with student journalists from other universities across the country with a bit of friendly competition, with a prize for the winning team. A quiz will be devised by the committee and will cover a wide range of typical pub quiz topics.
The Award Show on Saturday is one of the centrepieces of the conference and many student groups will come together to make it a night to remember. York Student Television (YSTV) will be able to assist with the production, including a livestream, for free. Entertainment acts on the night will be provided by student groups like ComedySoc, music societies, and DanceSoc. There will be photography on the night provided by Baluga Photography.
York Student Cinema (YSC) can host a movie night on campus in the Exhibition Centre. YSC is one of the University’s most popular societies with state of the art equipment. Delegates can get together to enjoy a journalism themed film in a large theatre with 300 seats.
There will be an afterparty on the Saturday night, bringing one of York’s most popular student club nights to The Lounge especially for SPANC delegates. A music set will be provided especially for the night by the University Radio York (URY) music team.
Accommodation The University of York has a bed and breakfest located on campus with 54 single rooms and 10 double rooms. In addition to this there is a Travelodge located within a 15 minute walk of campus. Both accommodations are along bus routes that lead to the city centre and train station. Both are also within easy walking distance of local pubs and shops.

Dates The dates we’re suggesting for SPANC are Saturday 6 April and Sunday 7 April, with delegates being able to arrive on Friday 5 April. As a weekend, it accessible for as many students as possible. Crucially, it is also outside the term time for 44 out of the 62 SPA-affiliated publications. For those in term time York is an easily travelable location as it is the centre of a large railway network. The city is easy to reach without missing contact hours in a vital time for the students who are still at the backend of their spring term. Our date will ensure that the higest number of delegates possible can attend SPANC and, most importantly, have a great time socialising and networking with both the fellow student journalists and leaders in the industry. These dates will also allow the publication volunteer team ample time to organise a fantastic SPANC as York’s spring term ends three weeks before this potential SPANC weekend.

York is a city of great beauty and everyone should see it, so any event which takes place there is a a opportunity for a feast of architecture and history.
A previous Activities Officer described York as “the Fleet Street of student media”. Looking at our alumni success and huge offering of ten outlets, I can’t disagree. York is all about student-led creativity.
The University campus, where I studied long ago and to which I often return for debates and similar events, is a sylvan, peaceful and convenient place for any activity involving thought and discussion.

With no journalism course, we still have some of the best media groups. Hosting SPANC would be about harnessing the creativity of our entire country, boosting our collective student voice.

York should absolutely host the SPA National Conference. We have always been lucky to have a thriving student media landscape, with plenty of rival papers to join.
York’s quality student media goes from strength to strength every year, makes a meaningful, positive impact on the campus community, and is respected around the country.
There is much that other student papers can learn from the excellent talent at York and I hope the SPA picks the wonderful goose-filled campus for their conference!
The SPA Conference would benefit from the energy, enthusiasm and collaborative spirit of York’s media societies, and from Union and University management’s commitment to highstandard, student-led journalism in the interest of the public sphere.
