Wed 15 Oct, 8.00pm Tickets: £13 (£11 concessions)*
Thu 20 Nov, 8.00pm Tickets: £13 (£11 concessions)*
An astonishing concert performance of dance-and-mime theatre. Amidst the wonders of the circus, two brothers fight over a beautiful tightrope walker. As she leads them above and below themselves into other imagined lands, their desire turns to obsession and their rivalry reaches a violent conclusion.
Celebrate Oscar Wilde’s 160th Anniversary with a modern ballet production of his poignant short story, The Happy Prince.
The Little Soldiers is a story of passion, obsession and the endless pursuit of an impossible dream. Theatre Re uses a “spellbinding physical aesthetic” (A Younger Theatre) to take us through the subconscious of two warring brothers. Adding to the drama is Alex Judd’s live music – a stunning soundscape created by recording and looping as he plays onstage. “Captivating, spellbinding - a whirling cocktail of chaos and calm.” Mumble Theatre Video: http://youtu.be/OW1tTcyp2ok
Meet the charismatic but sorrowful Prince, who grieves for the lives of the poor in his kingdom. Help arrives in the form of a swallow and together they carry hope and good fortune out to the people. Also in the programme is a duet set to Gershwin’s popular Rhapsody in Blue and a firm ensemble ballet favourite from CDC’s repertoire, All I Can Do Is Be Me, set to the raw and evocative songs of Bob Dylan. “An exuberant cast creating huge movement and life on stage. Its strengths were the visual and audio presentation and stylish choreography... a series of breathtaking sequences.” Strawberry Line Times

Theo Clinkard takes to the stage with an engaging double-bill of Accumulation (1971); an iconic solo work by the pioneering American choreographer Trisha Brown and his acclaimed group work Ordinary Courage (2012). Set to the music of The Grateful Dead, Accumulation (1971) finds the extraordinary in the everyday, through the device of adding one gesture to another and repeating the phrase with each new movement. Since its creation, Trisha’s work has come to be regarded amongst the most influential and important contemporary dance of all time. Ordinary Courage is the eloquent dance work that launched Theo’s company in 2012, during which he examines the nature of loss and the potential for movement to communicate when words are inadequate. This work features an international cast, a luminous light box installation, lit by Zerlina Hughes and a haunting score by Alan Stones performed live by celebrated pianist Clíodna Shanahan. Accumulation (1971) is presented through kind permission of the Trisha Brown Dance Company. “Clinkard’s performance of Trisha Brown’s Accumulation (1971) was witty in all the right offbeat ways.” The Herald Scotland

Under the new artistic direction of Lucy Bennett, Stopgap Dance Company offers the fascinating and unique experience of Artificial Things. Cinematic in feel, the piece follows an intriguing narrative that invites audience members to join the dancers on an absorbing and collective journey. Slowly suffocating in each other’s company, a group of individuals seek relief in a riotous rock ‘n’ roll party. However, their wild disorder soon descends into playground politics, and reveals some uncomfortable truths. When making Artificial Things, Lucy decided to take a fresh creative approach and looked to focus on the individual dancers and their stories. For her initial inspiration, Lucy took a single figure in a snowcovered landscape, eventually shaping a highly visual, full length piece from this image. In this evocative production Stopgap Dance Company creates a compact world of riddles that questions our notions about human unity and co-existence. Stopgap Dance Company is the UK’s leading dance company that integrates exceptional disabled and non-disabled dancers. “Bold and disarming” (Exeunt Magazine)

Since its formation, the Manchester-based company has enjoyed critical success, and is now The Lowry’s Resident Dance Company. Beauty Of The Beast is an exploration of masculinity and male group behaviour. Inspired by observations and theories of identity, it references groups to which men’s commitment is so strong that their affiliation is part of their identity, where pressure to conform to group norms is irresistible, and inter-group rivalries can be highly competitive and hostile. Company Chameleon advocates dance theatre as an effective force for social change, and credits the inner-city Manchester theatre community as fundamental to their own artistic success. Through a commitment to a high quality education programme, the Company seeks to actively encourage access and social inclusion, and support the invaluable legacy once offered to them. Commissioned by The Lowry, DanceXchange and Live at LICA. “watchable, distinctive and creative you’re left with a sense of true optimism” The Public Reviews

Yorkshire Dance presents Friday Firsts #28 Douglas & Air Hunger See p45 for details
This world premiere of two new dance works, Hagit Yakira’s Air Hunger and Robbie Synge’s Douglas, is the culmination of a
year-long collaboration between Yorkshire Dance, the University of Leeds, Breakfast Creatives and Liz Lerman.
respond_ is a new digital adaptation of Liz Lerman’s renowned Critical Response Process which is enabling people across the world to interact directly with Hagit and Robbie as they share two stages of their works-inprogress online, in September and November 2014.
The respond_ team is testing whether an online adaptation of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process can deepen audiences’ understanding of and engagement with dance and their empathy with artists; whether it can expand the audience reach of new dance works; and whether it can benefit the creation and development process of new artworks.
Hagit’s work will have been shared with a ‘Closed Group’ of individuals in a process controlled by researchers from University of Leeds, while Robbie’s will have been open to anyone, anywhere in the world. respond_ has been developed by the partnership after being selected by Nesta, Arts Council England and Arts & Humanities Research Council as one of over 60 partnerships to receive funding from the £7 million Digital R&D Fund for the Arts. http://artsdigitalrnd.org.uk @respondto_ #respondto_ www.facebook.com/respondtodance
The research team will be testing the potential of digital communications technologies to enhance the audience experience and demystify the creative process. Find out more, and join in, at www.respondto.org
