Sat 26 Nov, 8.00pm Demon Barber Roadshow Time Gentlemen Please! Assembly Room Tickets £16, concessions £14
You Know Me is the solo dance theatre piece of one female. Funded through G4A by Arts Council England Yorkshire, and cocommissioned by Doncaster Hot House and The Civic, Barnsley.
In 2001, The Demon Barbers – winners of Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2009 - brought together some of England’s most exciting young traditional dancers to create their high energy spectacular Roadshow.
A single female is trapped in a room deep within her past. As she explores her hidden memories, she realises she is unable to escape the familiar prison presented as her parents’ living room. In a self-perpetuated cycle, the woman tries to unearth the reason for her inability to move on in her life... The more she tries the deeper she goes...
Now take a further step, and invite three young hip-hop dancers for a night out at their local pub, ‘The Fighting Cocks’. Clog, Rapper and Morris meet B-boying, Popping and Krump in this humorous and unmissable visual feast. Think Riverdance with a false moustache, Stomp with bells on, and both sitting in the front seat of a Bugatti! 5

The performance features an entirely new score played live and stunning costumes by three time Oscar winning designer Sandy Powell. Following last year’s critically acclaimed Declarations, internationally renowned contemporary dance company Phoenix Dance Theatre return to Huddersfield with their latest diverse mixed programme, Reflected.
Danced entirely in water, and set against the backdrop of the Easter Rising in Ireland, this is a tender and beautiful award-winning production.
Marking three decades of outstanding dance by the company, the bill opens with Richard Wherlock’s stylish, sensual and vibrant Switch. Melt, by Artistic Director Sharon Watson, features an innovative blend of aerial dance and contemporary choreography whilst Philip Taylor’s What It Is is a sultry, playful take on love and sexuality set to a mesmerising Amy Winehouse soundtrack. There is also a welcome return for audience favourite Pave Up Paradise, Ben Duke and Raquel Meseguer’s sexy but tongue in cheek re-telling of the story of Adam and Eve.
Spring, 1915. Jim Mack and ‘the Doyler’, two Dublin boys, make a pact to swim to an island in Dublin Bay the following Easter. By the time they do, Dublin has been consumed by the Easter Uprising, and the boys’ friendship has blossomed into love – a love that will, in time, be overtaken by tragedy. Powerful, emotionally charged theatre that embraces movement, music and visual imagery on a slowly flooding stage. The dancer approaches and embeds herself within her audience, her arm covered loosely with gold leaf seemingly diseasing the skin. She claims attention. The gold is displaced, passed on, pressed into the skin – a kind of burn. “The shedding of skins. Of giving and receiving. The contemplation of exchange, of boldness and listening to invitations. Gentle, direct and deeply moving. The sheer pleasure of uncertainty, of clarity and quietness. Compelling.” Audience response Between 2011
Angela Woodhouse and Jerwood award winning artist Caroline Broadhead once again bring you an intriguing and beautiful performance installation Between, which sets visual gems against intimate exchanges. In Trespass the boundaries of Kathak and contemporary dance are broken down and rebuilt in an exploration of invasion through live music and dance. Dancers and musicians intrude on each other’s territory, colliding and collaborating in beautiful combinations. Decreasing Infinity draws on both Kathak and contemporary dance. Starting in their purest forms, seen through abstract mirrors, the mutual attraction of two distinct dance forms brings them to a collision in which both cease to exist; rather, something new is formed.

Retina Dance Company Layers of Skin The Riley Theatre at Northern School of Contemporary Dance Sat 15 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 219 3018 Tickets £10.00, concessions £6.00 Layers of Skin is a multilayered performance with bold choreography by Belgian/English choreographer Filip Van Huffel and his inspirationally fearless Retina Dance Company. Layers of Skin starts from the idea of hiding. The three layers of our skin that hide our bones, organs and muscles also hide who we are and what we think and desire. Retina Dance Company shed their layers to expose a full-bodied, fast-paced, and stimulating production. The six exhilarating performers, joined onstage by members of Yorkshire Young Dancers, execute the quirky intricacies of Van Huffel’s vigorous choreography with raw vitality. A dynamic production that takes its audience on a journey, stripping away the layers, to discover the dancers’ internal motivations, expressed through Retina’s powerful and expressive movement style.

Darshan Singh Bhuller Caravaggio: Exile and Death The Carriageworks Sat 15 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 224 3801 Tickets £13.50, concessions £11.50 Special Offer: all tickets £6 for Emerge wristband holders 2011 Darshan Singh Bhuller presents Caravaggio: Exile and Death; dance theatre inspired by the life and work of the 17th century master painter, Caravaggio. Caravaggio: Exile and Death takes the audience on a journey of a man’s search for forgiveness and redemption after a life fascinated with youth and sexuality, violence, solitude and love. Scarred by imprisonment and the Catholic Church’s dismissal of his works, Caravaggio lived a painful and dramatic life. Combining highly physical choreography with stunning projections and a beautiful soundtrack, Darshan has created a show that tells the tempestuous story of Caravaggio’s life and art. “He’s been here before, and thank God for that. Brave, heartfelt and far from subtle, he takes on some of the most difficult and divisive ills in our society and turns them into vivid agit-pop art.” The Times “Bhuller’s approach is sufficiently oblique and inventive as to make what you feel about the violence greater than what he actually shows.” The Independent

Ménage à Trois 2011 is co-produced by Yorkshire Dance & Danceworks UK with additional support from stage@leeds and Arts Council England through the National Lottery scheme, Grants for the Arts.
A tantalising, lip-smacking triple bill of deliciously camp contemporary dance. “Brash, brutal and incredibly funny!” (Metro) Bagofti is a dark and captivating world of beauty and the grotesque that delves deep into the bold, austere and expressive art of iconic painter Francis Bacon. Part dance, part sculpture, this powerful solo is a mesmerising display of sheer physicality in response to the life and art works of one of the greatest 20th century artists. 2 Men & a Michael is a typically British, deadpan send-up of standup comedy via the antics of Gilbert & George and Morecambe & Wise. Dressed to kill, two idiots are locked in a constant loop of foolish shenanigans and thoughtless nonsense. Quirky, sharp, and incredibly funny. Horsemeat is a bold, brash and amusingly honest portrait of the gritty realities surrounding gay love, family life, sexuality and the pains of growing up, plunging us head-first into a nightmarish playground of frantic movements and thriving gestures. Soundtracked by the camp beats of 90’s disco and created in collaboration with dance mavericks Javier De Frutos and Nigel Charnock, Horsemeat is thought provoking, intimate and powerfully engaging. And finally, Jo and Lydia are your hosts for the evening, a couple of eccentric lounge lizards and wannabe drag queens who will join you in the interval for frolics, Sambuca and dancing in the bar.

Aisha was brought up in the Sinai desert, living life under the sun with her bedouin tribe. One day her simple and peaceful life was suddenly turned upside-down with a vivid dream - a dream that would challenge her traditional values and give her the desire to leave her rural life and head for the big city - Cairo. Travelling to Cairo brings Aisha unexpected adventures. The show presents a synergy of Arabic roots and folk movement with contemporary dance. Expect to see Bedouin, Arabic Folk, Oriental and Modern Arabic dance all in one show. Under the Sun will be Arabian Dance Theatre’s most exciting show yet.
