Gary Clarke LUSTRUM AFTERMATH

C-12 Dance Theatre Shhh!

Sat 8 Mar, 7.30pm Tickets: £8

Fri 11 Apr, 7.30pm Tickets: £12, concessions £10

Recommended for ages 16+

This exciting new show, choreographed by Artistic Director Annie-Lunnette Deakin-Foster, tells the story of a library closed down; but if the community came together, could they save it?

Led by award-winning, Barnsley-born choreographer Gary Clarke, LUSTRUM is fast and furious, driven by creative instinct and quick fire choices creating a one-off public performance – LUSTRUM AFTERMATH. The five works will excite, intrigue and captivate audiences on a promenade journey through The Civic’s different performance spaces.

Creating an innovative and powerful piece of dance theatre, five theatrical performers manipulate the set, cleverly dramatizing the emotion contained within several classic books, including Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

The evening will also feature extracts of new work by regional artists and a postshow party with Gary Clarke and the LUSTRUM project artists.

The set is mostly recycled from the New Barnfield Library, Hatfield, which closed down in 2012 – but which Shhh! brings gloriously back to life.

In Motherland, Vincent Dance Theatre’s brilliant, multi-talented ensemble of men, women and children take a look at the gender they were born into and the price they are paying for it. Spurred on by Simone de Beauvoir, Caitlin Moran and the Spice Girls, Vincent goes into battle with the big boys, arguing against a narrow, over-sexualized definition of femininity to ask: what it is that we really, really want? Uncompromising yet utterly accessible, Motherland has a broad appeal for both sexes through its potent blend of theatre, live music and dance.

Jacket Dance by Dan Watson is a duet. Two men dance ridiculously together. We think there must be something seriously meaningful and interesting in the idea of ridiculous dancing. Dan wanted to explore the idea of “ridiculous dancing”, not as a joke or ironic comment, but curiously and joyfully. The kind of ridiculous dancing perhaps found in excitable kids, excessively drunk wedding guests, dancers too old to care, too inexperienced to compose, too overwhelmed to self-edit. Hunt & Darton are a live art collaboration between Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton.

Hull Dance HU1 A2T Fruitspace Fri 28 Feb, 7.30pm Tickets: £7 A stream of consciousness between performer, artistic process and audience, Solitaire by George Adams presents an entertaining and evocative commentary touching on sexuality, death, risk and autobiography. MC to his own vaudeville style show, Adams struts recklessly about the stage quaffing alcohol, mocking modern culture and dancing with energy and panache.

Their work Boredom is an exploration into the highs and lows of being bored. Embrace it, combat it or simply acknowledge it, boredom affects all of us at some time or other. And Hunt & Darton find that rather interesting, bringing you moves, some wise words, ‘you do it bits’ and Holly’s bored face whilst promising lots of visual stimuli in case anyone, well, gets bored. Hunt & Darton think it is a good idea to get bored and actively encourage you do too. It might just change your life.

Instant Dissidence Caramel

12 Degrees North Triple Bill

Theatre 1 Wed 5 Mar, 7.30pm Tickets: £5

Quad South Hall Wed 19 Mar, 7.30pm Tickets: £5

You can watch dance, even hear it. But have you ever tried to smell, taste or touch it?

12 Degrees North introduces a new triple bill with work by the talented James Wilton (choreographer for the opening ceremony of Rugby World Cup). His dance is daring, intensely physical, with infectious energy. In contrast, Lea Anderson (Artistic Director of The Cholmondleys and Featherstonehaughs) creates fascinating, challenging and visually stunning dance theatre which bursts with idiosyncratic movement.

Caramel is a cross between a dancemaking session and the process of cooking caramel, stimulating all five senses. It is an edible choreography which is as much led by smell, taste and touch, as sight and sound. Intimately close to the performers, audiences experience the creation of dance, soundscape and lighting installations, and engage with the process of cooking caramel. Instant Dissidence is a Bradford-based company whose work focuses on the body and its physical and cultural architectures. “Conceptually brilliant!” The Culture Vulture

Guest Emma Lansley presents her trio Talking to Mia and Butch, a quirky dance theatre piece with a light twist, focussing on the complex lives of three socially awkward individuals. With music by Kate Bush and a hint of lemons, this is humorous and heart-warming dance. A dazzling display of super-physical dance theatre from North West artists.

Glendinning’s work draws on 30 years of photographing dance and performance, while also including work from throughout his archive. John Avery’s music both leads and follows the imagery in a series of long leaning notes that float, and are held, at once in motion and waiting to move. Lea Anderson’s Miniatures is a futuristic nod to the Elizabethan era, playfully musing about what may have gone on ‘outside of the frame’ of traditional portraiture. A solo for Candoco dancer Annie Hanauer, the piece was inspired by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum’s miniatures portrait collection and features layers of references to poses, dress and demeanour of the period. CONTEMPORARY Yorkshire Dance Mixed Programme Gary Stevens, Lucy Suggate & Louise Wallinger Yorkshire Dance Thu 6 Mar, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 243 8765 Book securely online www.yorkshiredance.com/bookonline Tickets £10.00, concessions £8.00 Not Tony by Gary Stevens is like a comedy, quick-change hat routine, where single items represent different members of a family. All speak with the same voice as an ambiguous internal/external conflict is played out. An unnamed, unknown identity emerges in the space between the other established characters. Liquid Gold by Lucy Suggate is a visual delight, a sensual and intricate solo where the performer embarks on a luxurious transformation. With liquid limbs and a spine like treacle, the body becomes fluid in expression, articulation and thought. Annoying the Neighbours is a hilarious and disturbing collection of tales of Shooting Squirrels, Using the Neighbour’s Garden as an Ashtray, and Letting Yourself In for a Nose Around. To create this piece of ‘verbatim theatre’, Louise Wallinger interviewed inquisitive and quarrelling neighbours and the noise officers and council workers who deal with their disputes. In this performance she listens to the edited interviews via an earpiece while repeating their words exactly as they are being spoken. In 2011 she began collaborating with Grace Surman and they produced Two Four One One, which was first presented as part of Compass Live Art Festival in Leeds. Over the last decade Surman has been making work to disentangle, to escape, to slip in and out of logics, of traditions and of modes of selfhood, modes which move between the seemingly honest and the playfully constructed, she works firmly in a tradition that exists to be plundered, revered, and ridiculed in equal measure. Oliver Bray’s The Animal was Upon Him is a ridiculous conversation, a wry two-hander of nonsensical, pseudo-philosophical badinage and silliness. It’s a trip to a Victorian zoo, a filthy reading of astral constellations and what it’s like to be an ape. But it’s also really complicated, with more moves than the average game of chess* and a lot more swearing. *Probably

The performer surrenders her voice to the intense words of tragic female figures from the history of theatre, including Antigone, Medea and Gretchen. The suffering of the fictional heroines (and anti-heroines) repeatedly enters her very being as she sings, shouts and speaks – she is fragile, raw, calculating and emotional. But who is speaking here, and do the dramatic references from the past still resonate in the here and now? A subtle but loud scream against the instability and the incalculability of our existence. 1 : S O N G S has been performed to critical and audience acclaim across Europe and The United States. The work also crosses the boundary into pop culture and has appeared at large-scale music festivals in Beutler’s home country, The Netherlands. “From gentle, frail and melancholic to rough, wild and hysterical, 1: Songs careers from one emotional extreme to the other as the literary greats infiltrate contemporary reality” De Keuze 2010, Theater Festival Flanders Part of Yorkshire Dance’s Juncture; a festival of contemporary movement, theatre and film work curated by Wendy Houstoun.

Inspired by the Romantics’ celebration of imagination, the series has played with references from Norwegian and Finnish folklore. Each image presents a solitary figure in a landscape, dressed in elements from surroundings that indicate neither time or place. As in a folktale where the forest could be any forest and the sea could be any sea, the scenes in Eyes as Big as Plates encourage a sense of timelessness and universality. The natural world acts as both content and context in this work, with the characters literally inhabiting the landscape. This blending of figure and ground also recalls the way in which folk narratives animate the natural world through a personification of nature. The slippage of elderly figures into the landscapes also suggests a return to the earth, a final celebration of lives that have been lived, reinforcing the link between our humanity and the natural world. The three previous stages of the project have been photographed in Norway, Finland and New York. A flickering dance of intriguing imagery brings to light the possibilities of everyday movements which appear, evolve and freeze before your eyes. Made entirely from archive photographs and footage from the earliest days of moving image, it follows the footsteps of the protagonist of Walser’s story, The Walk. Touched is a choreography of close-ups, a romance for hands and faces. The setting is a bar in north London. The characters are people who talk, smoke, drink, dance, fight, laugh and weep. They are just people at a party but, in one way or another, they are all touched. Vincent Dance Theatre’s brilliant, multi-talented ensemble of men, women and children take a look at the gender they were born into and the price they are paying for it. Spurred on by Simone de Beauvoir, Caitlin Moran and the Spice Girls, Vincent goes into battle with the big boys, arguing against a narrow, over-sexualized definition of femininity to ask: what is it that we really, really want? Uncompromising yet utterly accessible, Motherland has a broad appeal for both sexes through its potent blend of theatre, live music and dance. A chance to celebrate and reflect on some of the most magical personal journeys, embarked upon as a result of the impact of coming into contact with dance on your doorstep and without ever having to visit a ‘theatre’. The evening will feature work by Ombetha Yehinga Organisation (OYO) from Namibia, presenting new work created in partnership with a group of young people and artists from Leeds. The Yorkshire Dance Youth have, inspired by Louise Wallinger’s Annoying the Neighbours, created a short film about dancing with their neighbours, first seen at Juncture 2014. Community arts organisation Space2 presents two short films in response to the experiences of connecting with particular community groups in Leeds, by artists Kevin Hickson (visual and digital artist) and Tony Stephenson (visual artist), working alongside Fallen Angels Dance Theatre. Supported by Leeds Inspired.

Big Dance: be inspired by dance Big Dance is the UK’s largest festival of dance participation and performance. Since 2006, Big Dance has taken place in the UK every two years. Big Dance in 2014 includes the Big Dance Pledge, Big Dance Week from 5-13 July and finishing with our weekend of specially commissioned events between 11-14 July. www.bigdance.org.uk/big-dance-pledge _________________________________________________________________ Big Dance 2012 was the UK’s biggest ever celebration of dance. Over 3,500 events took place all sorts of locations – lidos, shopping centres, parks, palaces, schools, high streets and squares – in all dance styles, as part of the London 2012 Festival, which was the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. The story of 2012 and Big Dance in 2006, 2008 and 2010 are all captured at www.bigdancelegacy.com Big Dance is led by the Mayor of London and Foundation for Community Dance in partnership with a network of Big Dance Hubs. Big Dance was initiated and led by the Mayor of London in 2006 and has taken previously taken place in 2008, 2010 and 2012. www.bigdance.org.uk _________________________________________________________________
