stage@leeds at University of Leeds Tue 5 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 343 8730 Tickets £9.00, concessions £7.00 Part performance, part demonstration, part interrogation, this onenight-only event will pull together 12 months of discovery in an exciting evening of spontaneous madness and mayhem where everything and anything is possible... In 2009 acclaimed choreographer Gary Clarke was appointed as an Associated Artist at Yorkshire Dance under the LIFT programme, providing him with an opportunity to develop his working methods as a creative dance maker. With the help and guidance of renowned choreographers / directors Nigel Charnock, Wendy Houstoun and Guy Dartnell, Gary forced himself out of his comfort zone and dived head first into the frantic and unpredictable world of improvisation. Bringing together an eclectic group of dancers, choreographers and performers from around the UK and Europe, Gary led a series of creative Choreo-labs which became a playground of discovery looking at how to use improvisation as a tool to create work. The event will conclude with a lecture demonstration and question & answers session where you, as an audience, can learn more about the discovery and what happens next... “While other dance makers retreat far too frequently into tried and tested methods, Clarke approaches from the angle of pure theatre. Love it or loathe it, you sure won’t forget it.” The Leeds Guide

In The Mill a seemingly small decision or action can gather momentum and impetus beyond your control, snowballing until you find yourself running like mad to power the treadmill whilst someone else is riding it like a ferris wheel. Directed by Toby Sedgwick (Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for the National Theatre production, War Horse). Dramaturg Rufus Norris (Evening Standard Award for best Director). The name Ockham’s Razor comes from the medieval philosopher William of Ockham and reflects the way the company works: given a choice between two theories, go for the simpler one thereby keeping the work cogent, artful and easily grasped. “aerial artistry and theatrical flair” The Times

Devised and directed by Mish Weaver, with actor Eric MacLennan in a solo performance, Ennui L’Estrange shares his all-consuming love of circus and the sophisticated hopelessness of his obsession. The solitary ringmaster plays with perceptions of mental ill health and performance. Ennui conjures up vivid circus performances, on film and in his imagination. We share his knowledge that no matter what, ‘the show must go on.’ There is no middle ground as the glitz of circus and the monochrome of depression meet head on. Bipolar Ringmaster is a developmental precursor for a group show in 2012 in which the character will find himself the pivotal figure of a fully fledged Bipolar Circus, presented by Stumble. The project is principally funded by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, and is delivered in partnership between London 2012, Arts Council England, the Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Wales, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council.

Staged on a 12ft x 6ft running machine this performance considers the long-distance goals of running and resistance. It follows the life of Bobby Sands, an Irish republican prisoner who died on hunger strike in 1981 in pursuit of a united Ireland. Bobby was a keen runner as a teenager, and wrote about running whilst in prison. Visually arresting and emotionally moving, the work also uses new technology in creating a movement triggered sound score. However at its heart is the extraordinary physical performance by Eddie herself and the story told, both of which are memorable long after seeing the work.
