I am the monster that breathing men want to kill... I am Dracula. Imagine a world where you can only go out after dark, where you feel a constant hunger for human blood but where for all eternity you will appear young and beautiful. Welcome to the world of Dracula. A creature who should inspire repulsion in every living thing but who has seduced countless generations, Dracula is possessed of a mesmerising sexuality which fascinates us all. Choreographed by David Nixon, this ballet reveals the tormented world of the immortal Count. Images and moments from Bram Stoker’s legendary novel are brought alive in sensuous and sinister dance and theatre uncovering our most basic desires and fears. DANCE / PHYSICAL THEATRE State of Emergency Mission Possible The Carriageworks Fri 25 Sep, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 224 3801 Tickets £10.00, concessions £8.00 State of Emergency’s acclaimed Mission National Showcase Tour hits the road with zeal once again, presenting a sparkling show that exposes the male psyche, combining street, hip hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance. Leading Black British choreographers Jeanefer Jean-Charles, Kwesi Johnson and Colin Poole have created three pieces of dance theatre that put male relationships under the microscope, exploring role models and exposing male perspectives on life. From the street to the home, from the emotional bond between father and son to the solidarity of friends hanging out, five stunning male dancers present a snapshot of young men in the 21st century. This is the fifth Mission National Showcase Tour – an event that has helped launch the careers of many Black British choreographers. “Densely packed and intoxicatingly pure.” Matt Trueman, Freelance Theatre Critic (Culture Wars) “It’s great to see male relationships examined in this way.” Sophia Jackson, Afridiziak “Engaging, exciting, and insightful. CONTEMPORARY Tilted Productions TrAPPED The Riley Theatre at Northern School of Contemporary Dance Sat 3 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 219 3018 Tickets £10.00, concessions £6.00 The new dance theatre piece by award-winning choreographer Maresa von Stockert, “one of the most intriguing talents in British dance theatre.” (Metro) Making its first visit to The Riley Theatre, Tilted brings this captivating and thought-provoking brand new work. Unfolding like a film, TrAPPED tells the stories of five characters caught up in a surreal Kafkaesque landscape. In our surveillance-obsessed times, TrAPPED explores notions of personal freedom. Specially-composed music, spoken word, contemporary mime and striking choreography are woven into an exceptional and pertinent audiovisual experience. With Tilted’s usual “stunning visual effect... wit and imagination” (The Stage), a tragicomic world, both poetic and dark, comes alive on stage. “Stockert has a unique way of looking at the world – both scrupulously focused and wildly hallucinatory.” The Guardian TrAPPED is supported by Arts Council England, Mercury Theatre Colchester and Laban Theatre.

Vincent Dance Theatre If We Go On The Carriageworks, Leeds Thu 8 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 224 3801 Tickets £10.00, concessions £8.00 If We Go On is a series of individual acts that lay bare the mechanics of theatre, placing the investigation of language at the centre of the work. Through miniature dances and stuttering songs, militant manifestos and extended exits, it embraces uncertainty, hesitancy and not knowing with a dark, intelligent humour. An exceptional ensemble of multi-tasking performers and musicians morph words into movement, shunt gesture into sound and at times burst into song to create a performance they can believe in. In a relentless succession of splintered transactions, where words lose their strength, music strains to be heard and movement meanders into exhaustion and incoherence, If We Go On asks: If you had one last dance in you, what shape would it take? For video clips, performers’ blogs and more information about If We Go On visit www.IfWeGoOn.co.uk “Brave, intelligent entertainment.” The Times If We Go On is funded by Grants for the Arts through the Arts Council of England. CONTEMPORARY Retina Dance Company Antipode The Riley Theatre at Northern School of Contemporary Dance Sat 10 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 219 3018 Tickets £10.00, concessions £6.00 Four great young male dancers are joined by a double bass player as they perform a raw and exhilarating piece of athletic dance. Powerful and energetic movement demonstrates the skill of the dancers and emphasises their connection with the live soundscore. The five individuals share the stage but are on their own journeys, with no shared goals and no fear, challenging their own physicality. They collide, caress, fight, play and reject as they stampede along their own pathways. Quirky solos interrupt feisty duets and athletic group work. After sell out tours in Belgium with his band Aranis, Belgian composer / musician Joris Vanvinckenroye joins Retina to create the soundscore for Antipode. By manipulating the sound of his double bass, both acoustically and electronically, Joris creates a rich musical landscape, which drives the performance with percussive power and serene melody. Retina is an ambitious contemporary dance company artistically led by Filip Van Huffel and working from Belgium and the UK. “Van Huffel... bends his dancers in amazing shapes with an intriguing interplay of limbs, quirky balances and exciting athleticism.” Stephanie Ferguson, The Guardian To view a clip of Antipode visit Retina’s website.

The Riley Theatre at Northern School of Contemporary Dance Sat 17 Oct, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 219 3018 Tickets £10.00, concessions £6.00 with post-show discussion Following a successful international tour, Sense of Self returns to the UK with its poetic and powerful reflection on identity. As skin is always renewing itself, is identity not also in a constant state of change? Underpinned by a compelling original score, Sense of Self unfolds as a fluid succession of physical tableaux, offering different perspectives on the multi-layered nature of identity. After impressive careers as dancers – Demers with Ginette Laurin’s O Vertigo and Diallo with Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance – both women rapidly came to prominence with their respective choreographic work. They join forces here to conjure up a world where the ground is constantly shifting, connections are made and broken, relationships and characters always transforming. “A poetic and profound reflection on identity... one leaves feeling intelligent, alive.” Alexandra Liva, Le Soleil “A fine creation... which has the mysterious depth of dreams and the lucid intelligence of consciousness.” Marie-Chantal Scholl, Dfdanse This performance is part of a series focusing on artists making new work in the UK today. In the context of Black History Month, and supported by Leeds City Council,Yorkshire Dance will facilitate a dialogue with artists and audiences about colour and identity in relation to contemporary art practice. Are you interested in developing as a choreographer? Do you see yourself as a mover and maker of ideas? Are you a dancer or performer wishing to extend your skills and understanding through choreographic practice and study? The MA Choreography offers the chance to explore dance, bodies and movement as a discipline of the twenty-first century. Based in the prestigious academic environment of the University of Leeds, we work together to make dance the centre of an education geared to your needs. The programme includes the opportunity to expand your experience of creating site-based work with Leeds as your ‘studio’, extend into virtual environments and communities of your own design, and create works through improvisation and in collaboration with practitioners from other fields - for example live art, design, theatre, music, writing. The MA Choreography builds on your previous experience whether as a recent arts graduate, experienced performer, community practitioner or teacher. The programme works through negotiated learning, developing critical reflective thinking. Students study dance by creating it, talking about it, watching it, experiencing it, performing it.
