Described by Maresa von Stockert as her very personal love declaration to Surrealism, Masquerade is inspired by Freud’s interpretation of dreams and the Surrealist movement of the mid 20th century and its fascination with the subconscious, eroticism and death and the mystery of time. Feasting the eyes and provoking the mind, six outstanding dancers aged between 25 and 60 will turn bone structures liquid and de- and re-construct bodies and their secrets. Maresa von Stockert will collaborate with renowned SFX artist John Schoonraad, creative director of Lifecast Ltd. He will create delicately sculpted faces and prosthetics that will be brought to life by the dancers and become an integral and intricate part of the piece’s physical poetry. Evoking vivid imagery from the beautifully macabre to the violently sensual, Masquerade invites you to leave the rules of reason behind and dive into a dreamlike world that gives free rein to the choreographer’s “scrupulously focused yet wildly hallucinatory” (Guardian) imagination.

His mum was a nun. His Dad was a Nazi. Mixing text from the past and present with the real-time soundtrack of The Sound of Music, The Post Show Party Show asks what is present and what is absent, what is professional and what is amateur. “This innovative show is performed in the style of a Brechtian-inspired Morecambe and Wise double act.” Edinburgh Guide “Fans of The Sound of Music will love this wonderfully ironic twist on their favourite show, and anyone else will simply be charmed by the beauty of a family under construction in the past and still creating today.” The British Theatre Guide Selected for the British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase 2009. Supported by Dance4, Nottingham City Council and the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

CONTEMPORARY Charles Linehan Company The Fault Index / The Clearing The Riley Theatre at Northern School of Contemporary Dance Sat 14 May, 7.30pm Box Office 0113 219 3018 Tickets £10 (£6 concessions) “As Linehan has proved for over a decade now, the best things often come in the least hyped packages” The Observer The Fault Index is a series of connected and unconnected incidents. Juxtaposed along ‘fault lines’, the random alignment of where the episodes fall underpins the themes of displacement, discontinuity and unity. At its heart is a bedrock of ensemble pieces that weave together disparate and independent choreographic elements in a percussive and spirited tour de force. In The Clearing, slow transformations evolve within a complex weave of interlocking melodies, off-rhythms and beautiful sonorities. A commissioned score by Richard Skelton features in a sonic and lighting environment that is unique to each setting.

Giselle follows the traditional story of the young peasant girl Giselle who falls in love with the handsome Prince Albrecht. On finding her love is unrequited, and weakened by ill health, Giselle dies. She is summoned from her grave by the Wilis, the spirits of women betrayed before their wedding days who return to take vengeance on men by dancing them to death. Giselle saves the remorseful Albrecht from his certain fate proving that love can conquer all – even death. See Giselle as you’ve never seen it before as Northern Ballet brings together the traditional classical steps by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot with the passion and emotion for which the Company is renowned. Giselle is staged for Northern Ballet by Yoko Ichino, who has danced the lead role many times for some of the world’s greatest companies. With sets and costumes supplied by English National Ballet, and the traditional score by Adolphe Adam performed live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia at all performances, it’s an unmissable production for all ballet fans.
