Wayne McGregor | Random Dance FAR Mon 30 Jan, 7.30pm Inspired by the controversial Age of Enlightenment and by French philosopher Diderot’s very first set of encyclopaedias from the 1700s, FAR mines an era that first placed ‘a body in question’. Staged in a mesmerising environment of shadow and light designed by Random International and Lucy Carter, object and

Michael Pinchbeck The Beginning

A performance made from fragments of memories, of wild nights and long-disappeared communities, it evokes the life of a once-mighty building and asks what is left when a theatre closes its doors for the last time?

They are professionals. They have learned their lines. They are waiting to make their entrance. They are ready to begin.

In 2009 Dan Canham made a film in a rotting and dilapidated theatre in Limerick, Ireland. Using that film as source material, this original piece of dance-theatre is an eloquent, heart breaking elegy for a lost and ruined theatre. “Canham raises ghosts in spine tingling dance-theatre piece… exquisitely crafted, thoughtful theatre” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian Made with support from Arts Council England, Escalator Performing Arts, Bristol Ferment at Bristol Old Vic and Battersea Arts Centre.

Part theatrical memoir, part safety announcement, The Beginning is the second in a trilogy of works taking Shakespearean stage directions as starting points for performance and looks at what it means to begin. Because he has promised never to perform again, Michael has invited Nicki Hobday and Ollie Smith to join him in remembering how it feels to perform for the first time. “Pinchbeck is such an interesting theatre-maker” The Guardian
