So, what’s it all about? Welcome! Fresh is back with another remarkable showcase of the best youth dance that Yorkshire has to offer. Produced in partnership between Yorkshire Dance & Youth Dance England, Fresh is the regional youth dance platform for Yorkshire & the Humber and is part of U. Dance, the national scheme to encourage participation in dance performance. Tonight’s groups have been selected through an open application process by a panel of judges drawn from our Youth Dance Hub Network (see page 10), spearheaded by Yorkshire Dance. The West Yorkshire Playhouse has also played host today to a brand new event – Where Can Dance Take You? An event for young people and the adults who work with them, it has featured workshops, panel discussions, performances and bag-loads of information on how Yorkshire’s young people can take their interest in dance further. If you missed out, log on to our youth dance website to find out more. www.yorkshiredance.com/youth You might notice a difference to Fresh this year. For the first time we have asked groups to create and choreograph new work centred on a theme or idea. This year’s theme is water. Watching how each group has interpreted the theme and their differing approaches to the subject matter will be one of the highlights of the night. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the show – and, don’t forget, Fresh will be back in Spring 2012.
Thank You The team would like to extend its warm thanks to West Yorkshire Playhouse and its staff for their support in presenting Where Can Dance Take You? & Fresh 2011, to all the participating organisations and individuals for their support in presenting Where Can Dance Take You? and to all volunteers who have given up time to support the production. We’d also like to thank you for coming to support the region’s young people.

Youth Dance in Yorkshire Yorkshire Dance is delighted to be Youth Dance England’s partner organisation in Yorkshire.
Youth Dance England is the national organisation that champions, supports and develops dance for young people. We work to create the conditions that ensure every young person can access high quality dance and progress their interest both in and outside of school. Through a shared vision with photo © Lizzie Coombes our national network of Regional Partner Organisations we aim to increase access, raise standards and improve progression routes. During 2008-2011, with £5.5 million investment from Arts Council England, Department for Children Schools and Families and Department for Culture, Media and Sport, we worked closely with the nine Youth Dance Strategy Managers, based in the RPOs, and key national organisations to increase the amount of high quality dance activity available to young people, so that dance is fully embedded in a developing culture offer for children and young people. From 2011-2012 we will use a further investment of £500,000 to continue to work with our network of RPOs to further embed dance into the cultural offer for young people in each region. This new investment will continue to fund existing youth dance infrastructure and retain a dedicated youth dance contact person in each region. For the period 2011-2012, our work will continue to focus on three key priorities: -
to widen access to dance; to raise the quality of dance provision for young people through a clear framework of standards in dance practice and; to improve progression routes for young people wishing to pursue a career in dance.
We are working towards an aspiration for every child and young person being able to access high quality dance as participants and viewers in their school and near where they live, and progress their interest to whatever level they wish and are able.

Yorkshire Dance champions the development of dance in Yorkshire by raising standards, increasing knowledge and understanding and fostering creativity and innovation. We have a particular expertise in innovative community practice and small scale work. With a thriving creative workspace, we support choreographic talent and artistic leadership, nurturing new generations of dance leaders at the early stages of their careers.
With partners in health, sport and local authorities, we create opportunities for people to experience dance, focusing on disadvantaged communities in Leeds and in areas of little provision.
We resource artists with a residency programme, information, advice and guidance, networking and performance opportunities. During 2009-2010, in partnership with Arts Council England and CIDA, we supported fourteen artists with business and career development and appointed two Associated Artists, Gary Clarke and Douglas Thorpe. We also develop training and qualifications for the professional sector, such as the Diploma for Dance Teaching and Learning (DDTAL).

This year we are launching a new international programme of Artist-asCurator through which artists will develop their leadership role as curators of events, debate and performance, enticing new audiences to experience contemporary practice.
We are committed to working with senior citizens and people with learning disabilities and, as well as supporting a Yorkshire-wide infrastructure of youth dance, we are about to launch the new Yorkshire Dance Youth company in Leeds. In 2012 we will celebrate our 30th birthday – and celebrate it in style with a huge programme of special events coinciding with the Cultural Olympiad. One of the highlights will be The Big Dance 2012, a nationwide mass-participation experience for which we’re running events right across Yorkshire. Watch this space!
