Friday Firsts showcases new work by independent choreographers and dance companies working on the small scale. Friday Firsts #37

Sketch 2 Friday 5 February, 7.30pm Tickets £8.00, concessions £6.00 This evening brings together artists from years one and two of our ongoing artist development programme, Sketch, to reflect, share and focus on the role of a dramaturg in the creation of contemporary performance. Over the past two years, eight artists have had the opportunity to work with Dutch dance dramaturg Peggy Olislaegers. They have been encouraged to question their work and to become their own dramaturgs, exploring the full potential of their ideas. This evening will include the charismatic Peggy Olislaegers livedirecting new material: Hannah Buckley’s S/HE, a performance about complexity. A woman and a man attempt to make sense of a binary world, question it and imagine an alternative. Influenced by real stories, science fiction and menstruation S/HE seeks to support men, women and everything in-between. She'll also workshop a short solo extract of Sonder by Jamaal Burkmar (winner of the 2015/16 New Adventures Choreographer Award). Sonder was originally created for six dancers as part of the Sketch 1 programme in 2015. This exhilarating evening will give a revealing insight into what it’s like for an artist to work with a dramaturg.

Friday Firsts #38

This Is Where It’s At

#FFirsts

Friday 4 March, 7.30pm Tickets £8.00, concessions £6.00 This is Where It’s At showcases work in development which has had considerable research and development and which is ready for its next phase of testing with an audience. It is a chance to see choreographers delve into a deeper process of investigation and making, and witness the process of ideas taking shape through form, structure and movement language. Among the works will be Ella Mesma’s Ladylike. Madonna? Witch? Exotic Other? Ladylike is an exploration of gender stereotypes through the voices of five female artists. Using Ella Mesma’s unique movement language, the company has combined Rumba, Afro Cuban, Salsa and elements of Breaking, Rocking and Capoeira to create a visually striking and awkwardly provocative work. Rachael O’Neill presents Any Part of You Will Do. A collaboration with dancers Lara Ward, Tal Weinstein and Jessica Haener, it questions what happens to us when we become desperate for something or someone. Physically and emotionally, how far are we willing to go to achieve, to protect, to survive? Check the website and social media for details of other artists as they’re confirmed.
