Your twenties can be an exciting time of your life, financially. For example, you may be among a lucky few who have graduated college or university without any debts because you decided to live at home instead of on campus. And now, you’ve got a couple of part-time jobs and you’re looking to rent a place with a friend. Finally for the first time, you’re in charge of your financial decisions, which can become a little overwhelming. When the pressure gets to be too much, you might be tempted to splurge a bit. But, what if the splurges become more frequent? It might lead to bad financial habits into your 30s, 40s and beyond. Here are some ideas on how you can remain financially disciplined through every age. Twenty-something: Do you know where your money goes? Getting a handle on your spending now will benefit you in the long-term. The best way to do this is to create a simple and flexible budget. Make a list of your income and expenditures like rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, savings, fun and clothing. Also include a line for debt and for retirement savings. Why save for retirement when it’s decades away? Thanks to compounding interest, you’ll be surprised how big your nest-egg will grow!

Laurie Renton Justine Lutz Financial Advisors LR Future Insurance and Investments #7 Broadway Street W. Yorkton, SK S3N 0L3 Phone: 306.783.7737

Thirty-something: You have more purchasing power now that you’re established in your career. That also means that it’s easy to pack on the debt, too. Perhaps you own a house or a condo, you’ve leased a car, you’ve taken a couple vacations, or maybe you’ve just had a really big wedding and a baby or two. If you were a diligent saver in your twenties, chances are you have a pile of cash put aside for that pile of bills on your desk. If the opposite is true, then it’s time to shut down the debt before it snowballs into your forties. Try to pay off your credit cards each month, too. Or aim to pay more than the minimum. And always apply any new found money to your debt. During this decade also, try to put as much as you can afford into an RRSP. You’ll really appreciate it in your forties and beyond. Forty-something: Now that your debt is under control, how are your savings? Did you put away as much as you could for retirement and for emergencies? If you have kids, did you consider starting an RESP for their post-secondary education? If you were too focused on reducing your debt in the last decade, there’s still some time to catch up. Speak with a financial advisor about setting up an education fund for your child and about the best strategies for building your retirement savings. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. Government reduces SaskPower 2017 rate increase Saskatchewan residents will be paying slightly less for power in 2017 than originally thought, as the Government of Saskatchewan announces its decision about SaskPower’s multi-year rate application. Rates will be adjusted as follows: The increase of 5.0 per cent effective July 1, 2016, has been approved. This will not affect current billing, as it has been

in effect on an interim basis. The increase effective January 1, 2017, will be reduced to 3.5 per cent from 5.0 per cent. Cabinet agreed with the thorough review of SaskPower’s rate application by the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel, which also made the above recommendations. “SaskPower understands its customers need reliable power,” Minister responsible

for SaskPower Gordon Wyant said. “In light of the challenges with maintaining and growing the electricity system, as well as keeping up with demand and meeting targets for renewable generation, additional funding is needed to provide that reliable power to the people of Saskatchewan. SaskPower has been making historic investments to maintain and improve our province’s electricity system to

ensure it meets the growing need for power.” Investments in SaskPower’s generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure in the coming years include (costs approximate): Pasqua to Swift Current transmission line ($260 million) Kennedy to Tantallon transmission line ($113 million) Construction of Chinook Power Station ($680 million)

Distribution customer connects ($509 million) E.B. Campbell Hydroelectric Station life extension ($245 million) Wood pole remediation ($498 million) “We understand the economy is in a challenging state right now, and we are committed to providing safe, reliable power to our customers in as cost-effective a manner as possible,” SaskPower President

and CEO Mike Marsh said. “The approved rate increases provide us with the necessary financial certainty to make sure we have the power our customers need when they need it.” The 2016 rate increase took effect July 1, 2016 and resulted in an increase of $6 per month for the average residential customer. The 3.5 per cent increase will mean an additional $4 per month for these customers in 2017.

WCB approves premium rates

The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) approved the 2017 average employer premium rate for 48,357 employers covered by workers’ compensation. Employer premium rates have dropped from the 2016 average rate of $1.34 to $1.24, which is a 7.5 percent decrease.

WCB Chairperson Gord Dobrowolsky said, “Our 2017 average premium rate is the lowest rate in over thirty years and makes us the third lowest in the country. This is good news. However, our goal is not to have the lowest premium rates. Our goal is to remain fully funded in order to protect employers and meet the needs of the injured workers we serve in the event of the tragedy of a workplace injury or fatality.”

Dobrowolsky said that the decreases in the 2017 rates range from 1.8 percent to 18.6 percent. For the employers in these 43 rate codes, the average decrease is 7.6 percent. He noted there will be no change in the average premium rate for 2,367 employers in four industry rate codes. WCB’s CEO Peter Federko said he attributes the rate decrease for 45,778 employers to better safety performance

records in their 43 industry rate codes. “Last year, 87 percent of employers achieved Mission: Zero – Zero workplace injuries. But next year, 212 employers will face higher rates because of worsening safety performance.” Federko said, “Making every workplace in the province a safe place is what we need to achieve. We are committed to Mission: Zero because even one injury is one too many. One unsafe workplace is one too many.” For employers who implement successful safety programs and who maintain injury-free work places, there is a financial gain. Under the WCB’s Experience

Rating program, employers with above-par safety records earn premium discounts while employers with poor safety records pay a surcharge. All Saskatchewan employers will receive letters this week with the specifics of their 2017 premium rate. In addition to this year’s rate setting process, the WCB is holding education sessions on the Rate Model review which was conducted by an external actuary earlier in the year. The education sessions being held around the province are meant to educate employers and the public about changes to the current rate model which the Board has approved

and will put into effect in 2018. “The Board is holding these education sessions to make employers aware of what the impacts of the enhancements to the rate model will mean to them,” Federko said. The WCB will wrap up its Rate Model review sessions on December 14 and will be holding industry-specific sessions early in the new year for employers. Those interested in participating in the current educations sessions can still register on the WCB’s website at www.wcbsask. com. Registration for the industry-specific sessions will open in midJanuary.

About the WCB: The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board is a provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors and is funded by employers. Saskatchewan’s workers’ compensation system was adopted in 1930. At that time, the Workmen’s Compensation Act made into law what is known as the historic compromise: employers became collectively liable for workers’ compensation costs and, in return, workers waived their right

to sue for work injury. Visit www.wcbsask.com for more detail on rate setting and other WCB initiatives.

Re/Max makes donation to Health Foundation Jack Wruth announced that Re/Max Blue Chip Realty is donating a house valued at $169,900 to The Health Foundation. “We decided to give this house to The Health Foundation for a number of reasons, key among those would be that we think the work the Foundation does is very important for everyone who lives in this area. The work they do improves healthcare services for everyone who lives in this region,” said Wruth. “The other key reason we decided to donate this house is that we all know a new regional hospital is coming to Yorkton; we can all see it is needed. The existing hospital is old and out of date; it was not built to deliver the type of healthcare provided today. We wanted to help the Foundation move the process

forward, to help them create awareness of the need for a new hospital, and to help them begin the fundraising that will be needed,” continued Wruth. “We have suggested to The Health Foundation that they could use the house to establish a lottery with the house as the first prize. A lottery will raise money and provide the opportunity to raise awareness for the new hospital at the same time. Our team of agents can help to market the lottery, and we at Re/Max have billboards and other marketing tools that will be useful and we will make available to the Foundation,” said Wruth. “This is an amazing donation and the largest one time donation we’ve received from individuals in almost 20 years. We are very grateful to Mr. Wruth and Mrs. Shank for their generosity. We also want

Re/Max Blue Chip Realty is donating a house valued at $169,900 to The Health Foundation. to thank Jack and Doris for their thoughtfulness, because this is a donation that keeps on giving as it provides us opportunity for the future,” said Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation. “Mr. Wruth is correct in that we need to advance the

campaign for a new hospital, both with the public and with the government. Our board reviewed this generous donation and they agree that the best thing we can do with this wonderful new house is make it the first prize in a new lottery The Health Foundation will launch in 2017,” con-

tinued Fisher “We have moved forward with plans for a house lottery, and have submitted an application for a lottery license. We will announce details for the lottery at a later date, however, we do expect to have tickets available for Christmas,” said Fisher. “We have been supporters and sponsors of the work of The Health Foundation for many years now,” said Wruth. “We have watched how they conduct themselves and seen the results of the efforts of the Foundation. We believe they will manage this donation wisely and to the benefit of the community.” “Doris and I, and our team here at Re/Max look forward to working with the Foundation on their new venture, an exciting house lottery”, concluded Wruth.

Managing USA sales includes managing (and recruiting when necessary) existing sales territory managers currently located through the mid central and western states plus responding to sales opportunities in other US areas through farm equipment dealers, etc. The prime sales and marketing responsibility is to attain and exceed corporate sales goals within the USA. However, the US sales office will be at the corporate head office where there is coordination with engineering, promotion, service, manufacturing & shipping departments, plus interaction with Canadian and Export sales divisions and other management personnel. Near 100% of the role is expected to be USA marketing and sales development. The right candidate will be experienced in managing and motivating personnel, will have strong education, communication, and experience skills, will be anxious to be “in the field” and “hands-on with customers” when required, and have a strong, proven work ethic, capable to take charge and lead growth. • When crumbs gather in the cracks of your keyboard, turn it upside down and give it a good shake to remove most. Then, use the sticky side of a Post-it note dragged between the keys to clean out the rest. • “Save large platters that come with holiday trays to use when bringing cookies or baked goods to other parties. That way you don’t have to bring home a platter, you can just leave it and pass it on.” — E.G. in Kansas • “Schedule haircuts and nail appointments to coincide with holiday parties. Then you won’t have to worry about doing your hair. It will still look nice from your beautician appointment.” — A.I. in Indiana • “I find that the best conversation starter

when visiting a large group of family or friends is a box or basket of photos. It is inexpensive to print copies, and I have all my old photos scanned anyway. Bringing them in a basket rather than in an album works because we pass them around, and people can take photos home with them. Sometimes, a picture will inspire a story, and I might write it down on the back of the photo to remember it and tuck it away. It’s more than worth the $10-$15 it costs to print pictures.” — L.W. in Virginia • Try substituting cream cheese for sour cream in your mashed potatoes for a dreamy, creamy alternative. Whip in with a mixer and enjoy. • Write return addresses on the back of holiday cards before disposing of the envelope. They can be tucked away for next year’s holiday cards list. 2) Add in molasses and the egg and beat until smooth. 3) Stir in all remaining ingredients. If dough is still sticky, add a little more flour. 4) Roll out to 1/4â€? thick for gingerbread men, 1/3â€? for a house. (If you are making a gingerbread house, always roll out and bake your dough on parchment paper). 5) Bake at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes.

When it comes to Christmas, I think of gingerbread houses. I look forward to building a special creation for my grandma, who is 93 and still lives on her own. Every year I try to think of something new and have ended up with a traditional house, the Eiffel Tower, a grain elevator and for this year, Taylor Field. My other tradition is to include my grandpa on each house since he passed away many years ago but still holds a place in our hearts. I hope you’ll try building your own gingerbread home. It’s worth the effort! Christmas Tradition Hello and Merry Christmas! We are the Vankoughnett family and we would like to share our absolute favourite Christmas story and tradtion we do every year to bless others and have a lot of FUN doing it too!! We have a Christmas tradition every year where we as a household family of five buy Christmas boxes of oranges and bake gingerbread cookies and we all get into our mini van and we go around the neighbourhoods of Yorkton and we all vote for the top 3 best decorated Christmas lights on homes!!!! Then when we have decided on the best top three homes, we run up to each home, buzz the doorbell and surprise each home with a box of Christmas oranges and give out a bag of home made cookies and we tell them how much we enjoy seeing their home all decked out in Christmas spirit and thank them and give them their prize!!! This is A LOT OF FUN for our family and we do it as a tradition each year when we can and the excitement on the faces of everyone is AWESOME! So that is our family Christmas tradition story involving baking, giving, and A LOT OF CHRISTMAS TRADITIONAL FUN!!! Allan & lisa Vankoughnett Yorkton, SK

CHRISTMAS EVE FISH •1 fresh pike or pickerel, about 2 lbs., filleted and bones saved •1 medium carrot, sliced •1 medium onion, chopped •1 stalk celery, chopped •1 bay leaf •1-200 g. can pink salmon •Salt Put fish bones in shallow saucepan with 2 cups water, carrot, onion, celery and bay leaf. Simmer covered for about 1/2 hour, skimming as necessary. Add the fish fillets to the saucepan and poach for 10 minutes or until flaky. Remove and set aside. Strain the fish stock; discard the bones, vegetables and bay leaf. There should be about 1-1/2 cups fish stock remaining which will gel without addition of gelatin, however, if too much stock has evaporated and water needs to be added, then unflavoured gelatin will have to be used according to directions on packet. Add salt to fish stock. Flake the fish fillets and arrange in bottom of glass serving dish. Thoroughly drain juice from the can of salmon and remove bones. Flake, then add to dish. Gently stir to blend the 2 varieties of fish. Add the fish stock to cover and place in refrigerator to gel (about 6 hours). Garnish with cooked, finely shredded carrots. Lillian Olynyk Russell, MB.

A Christmas Memory Many years ago, working at my first full-time job, taking a University class, paying off a student loan, paying rent, and trying to make the groceries last the month, Christmas gifts and functions were not a priority. In other words, money was extremely tight. As a new nurse, I got the privilege of working the night shift. Yes, it turned out to be a privilege, otherwise I wouldn’t have this memory to revisit. Sandra had asked what I was doing for Christmas, and I told her I was working the night shift over the holiday season, and then sleeping the days away. Midterm exams and assignments would be done, and I was more than ready for a break. Several days later, I got a phone call from her mother, asking me to join them on Christmas Day for a late supper. They would pick me up as the city bus wouldn’t be running, have supper, some visiting time, and then make sure I got to work on time. (And with the reminder, I would need to bring my uniform with me, so I wouldn’t have to go back to my home.) And supper was to be informal – in other words, jeans and a sweat shirt was the dress code. I was reluctant to accept the invitation, as I knew Christmas was a busy family time for them. But they were insistant. It seemed the Christmas Eve night

would never end; we were extremely busy. So, hitting the pillow Christmas Day morning was welcomed. The phone rang in the late afternoon, with Sheila saying they were just leaving their home to come to pick me up. That was my 20 minute warning. The full (not left-overs from their Christmas Day dinner) Christmas supper was fantastic, I can’t remember what was served, but I was full (OK – to be honest, I was stuffed). There was lit candles on the table, Christmas music, and lots of decorations. We laughed a lot, told stories of Christmas’s past, and then spoke of what accomplishments were planned for, for the following year, and then snacked/ate some more. It was almost time to leave, when I was informed that there was something in their well decorated tree that had my name on it. Opening a long, narrow box, I found a pair of long white nylon/satin gloves that fit my large hands. Wow!!! An impractical extravagance!!!!! With the gift came the reminder that things would get better, and until then I had beautiful gloves. I wore those gloves under my winter mitts for many days. It just seemed the extra warmth from the generosity of friends would keep my hands from freezing, and my heart warm, with the memory throughout that long and cold winter. Joyce Paul, Yorkton, Sask.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? — K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes

extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons,

including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? — B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are
