Retirement planning? Keep
PK_bingo_2x45.a30_R002342107.indd prod3dm • proofon to sandy calm MP-tfc and•carrying
The primary source of retirement income for the majority of Canadians will be personal savings. This is especially true since government pensions won’t be enough. But for many, investing on the stock market is also daunting due to ongoing market turbulence. It’s for these reasons why it’s particularly important today to create a retirement savings plan and sticking to it. Start with a simple plan If your retirement is 10 or more years away, now is a good time to put a plan in motion that will really pay off down the road, even though you might have other priorities. However, if retirement is just five or fewer years away, it’s time to get serious because the clock is ticking. But don’t be discouraged. Depending on your own particular situation, you can make up time by following this simple action plan or applying some of these ideas to your current plan:
Laurie Renton Justine Lutz Financial Advisors LR Future Insurance and Investments #7 Broadway Street W. Yorkton, SK S3N 0L3 Phone: 306.783.7737
First, identify your retirement goals and financial needs based on: • Your target retirement age • Your activities: will you be travelling, buying a home in another country or helping to pay for your grandchildren’s education? • The annual income you’ll need to retire: the rule-of-thumb is about 70 per cent of your pre-retirement income Second, identify your income sources and savings needs: • Employer pension, part-time work, government pensions (Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan) • Additional savings to meet your retirement needs and the other things you want to do Third, know your risk tolerance: When you’re ready to start investing, your financial advisor will have you fill out a questionnaire to identify your investment risk tolerance. This information will be used to build your portfolio with the right types of investments. Each year, it’s a good idea to revisit your risk tolerance level to ensure that your portfolio is properly balanced. If you identify some weaknesses, your advisor can then suggest ways to rebalance it. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. For insurance products, Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. acts as a National Life Insurance Brokerage Agency.” The provided example is for illustrative purposes and it is not intended to be nor should be construed or used as investment advice.

Agristability deadline for program participation Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) is reminding producers December 31, 2016, is the final deadline to submit 2015 AgriStability forms and pay 2016 program fees. Producers must pay program fees by the end of December to participate in the AgriStability Program for the 2016 program year. An Enrolment/ Fee Notice was issued
viding details on the fee and the deadline for payment. April 30, 2016, (or 30 days from the date on the enrolment notice, whichever is later) was the initial deadline for paying program fees. A 20 per cent penalty will be added to the fee if producers missed the initial deadline. All forms for the 2015 program year need to be submitted by December
31 to ensure producers can access AgriStability benefits. The initial deadline for sending in program forms was September 30. Forms received after this date and before December 31 will have a $500 per month penalty; however, if no benefit is generated there will be no penalty applied. The final deadline for paying fees and submit-
ting forms occurs on a Saturday and because this is outside of normal business hours SCIC will accept fee payments and form submissions until January 3, 2017, the first business day following the deadline. SCIC accepts all program forms from individuals (sole proprietors), corporations, co-operatives and other entities. Individuals are reminded the T1163 form, which
details their income and expense information, must also be submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency. Producers also have a number of options to meet this deadline. The program forms can be submitted through AgConnect, as well, producers can review their Enrolment/Fee Notice and detailed Calculation of Benefits. AgConnect lets you quickly send
AgriStability information to SCIC, allowing processing to begin sooner.
SCIC also continues to accept AgriStability Program forms through mail, fax or at any of the 21 Crop Insurance offices across the province.
For more information please contact your local Crop Insurance office, visit saskcropinsurance. com or call toll free to 1-866-270-8450.
Committee donates to new Regional Hospital The Farming for Health committee presented the proceeds of the 2016 crop year to The Health Foundation. The proceeds go into the fund for a new Regional Hospital.
“This is a project that all of the participants believe in,” said Larry Hilworth, Chair of the Committee. “There is a lot of work to farming this land; all of the businesses involved set aside
their own business for a period of time to donate time, equipment or product to make this project successful. This project is a success because the people involved care and want to see the project
succeed.” “This cheque we are presenting today is from the efforts of several businesses and individuals who believe in giving back to their community.
Fourth place for Yorkton robotics in Sweden By Thom Barker Staff Writer When it comes to robotics, there appears to be no stopping the Yorkton Regional High School. In the spring, the YRHS robotics team of Brock Chiasson, Sean Furber, Brett Guenther and James Thiessen qualified for the national Skills Canada competition by winning the provincial title, the fourth time in five years a Yorkton team had done so. In Moncton June 5-8, the foursome repeated as national champions, the first time a team composed of the same four individuals had done so. That win secured Yorkton a spot representing Canada in the 2017 World Skills competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. At the international level, the team of four
is paired down to two. On November 30, Brock Chiasson and Sean
Furber had the opportunity for a little international tune-up when
they competed against Europe’s best in the EuroSkills competition in Sweden. The pair finished with a score of 71 per cent, just shy of garnering a medal, but an admirable fourth place finish out of 11 teams from across the continent. The Abu Dhabi competition takes place October 14 to 19, 2017.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I walk 30-60 minutes about four times a week and drink several times from a water bottle that I carry with me. Would it be OK to occasionally substitute caffeine-free diet soda for the water? ANSWER: I’ve talked a few times about diet soda, and the controversy about whether it helps people lose weight or whether, despite having zero calories, it makes people more likely to gain weight. There has been evidence for both. A recent and fascinating study was published showing that artificially sweetened beverages predispose a person to higher blood sugars, and that the effect was due to chang-
es in the bacteria in our gut (called the microbiome). These bacteria have become the focus of intensive study of how important they are for our overall health. I recommend against habitual use of artificially sweetened beverages. Occasional use of diet soda is unlikely to harm much; however, water — still or bubbly, plain or with a wedge of fruit — is the best and most natural way to hydrate. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 years old, and will be having bypass surgery soon. After my surgery, will L-arginine be good for my heart? I know I will be walking every day. — G.J.S. ANSWER: L-arginine, an amino acid, has been shown to increase nitric oxide in blood vessels of people with high blood cholesterol and blockages in their arteries. There are two studies I know of that showed no effect from arginine on blood flow or inflammation. On the other hand, one study showed that supplements of arginine, along with
By Cindy Elavsky Q: I was watching “Christmas Cake Wars” the other day at my parents’ house, and I saw that Jonathan Bennett was the host. I loved him in “Mean Girls” and “Awkward,” and it got me wondering what else I can see him in. Thanks for your help! — Michaela M., via Twitter A: Jonathan reprises his role of Ben Saverin in the Lifetime movie “Mommy, I Didn’t Do It,” which premieres Jan. 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. It’s the sequel to “The Wrong Woman,” and it also stars Danica McKeller, Paige Searcy, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and George Wendt. When I spoke with Jonathan recently about his latest project, he told me it was a no-brainer to come back to work on this film. “The director, Richard Gabai, and Danica McKellar are two of my favorite people to work with in Hollywood. As soon as they mentioned it, I jumped at the chance.

Jonathan Bennett It was like coming home. You walk on set, and everyone just feels so comfortable. It’s like a boy-band reunion. All we needed was Lance Bass playing a lawyer, and it would be a true boy-band reunion for all of us.” Jonathan also was eager to return to the character of Ben, explaining: “Ben is a very likable character. I like playing likable characters, because I like giving the audience those butterfly moments. When I read the script, there were all of those great moments between him and Ellen. A big point of Ben’s presence is to give Ellen the confidence she needs to
phytoestrogens, B vitamins and vitamins C and E (as part of a medical nutrition bar) in people with angina improved some blood flow measurements and the ability to exercise on the treadmill. It also has been shown to have some benefits in people with heart failure. Based on these studies, I don’t recommend arginine after cardiac bypass surgery. However, there may some benefit, and since it is unlikely to be harmful, I wouldn’t try to dissuade someone who wanted to give it a try. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they can be avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I had radiation treatment in 2011 for a goiter. I know
tanning beds are very dangerous, but are spray tans dangerous for me? — V.V. A N S W E R : Dihydroxyacetone, the most common coloring agent in spray-on tans, is generally considered safe, but you should avoid getting it around your eyes, mouth and nose. There is some controversy, but the Food and Drug Administration has considered it safe. The radiation treatment for goiter slightly increases risk for cancer, especially leukemia. I think it reasonable to do what you can to reduce cancer risk, but I don’t think tanning spray is a big risk. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. do what she knows she can do to represent her daughter.” Q: What is Christina Ricci up to lately? Last I saw her was in the Lizzie Borden series. — Lisa F., via email A: Christina stars in a new series for Amazon called “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” which premieres Jan. 27. The fictionalized bio series — which also stars David Hoflin, Jamie Anne Allman and David Strathairn — follows the life of Zelda Fitzgerald (Christina), the brilliant, beautiful and talented Southern belle who becomes the original flapper and icon of the wild, flamboyant Jazz Age in the 1920s. The series begins when Zelda meets unpublished writer F. Scott Fitzgerald in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1918 and moves through their passionate, turbulent love affair and their marriage — made in heaven, lived out in hell — as the celebrity couple of their time. Q: Can you tell me if “The Americans” will have another season, and if so, when will it be televised? — Caddosec, via
email A: “The Americans” will return to FX for a fifth and sixth season, the latter of which will be the final season. The spy drama, which centers on a Russian spy family living in the U.S. in the 1980s, has not yet been given a premiere date for season five, but if it follows previous release dates, it should be in the first quarter of 2017. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Blair Witch” (R) — The 1999 horror sensation that forged nightmares out of a pocket-change budget gets a real-deal sequel for these dark digital days. James (James Allen McCune) leads an expedition into Maryland’s Black Hills Forest to find information about what happened to his sister, who disappeared during the events of the original “Blair Witch Project.” Once again seeing the story through “found footage,” we get shaky panicked angles on the action as the explorers get deeper into the woods. This sequel (the bumbling “Blair Witch 2: The Book of Shadows” that came out in 2000 is technically a sequel, but works better as a parody) stays pretty devoted to the original, but makes ill-advised changes along the way. The original had zero gore, an unseen monster and a guy standing in a corner as the climax of visual scares. This new one offers more intense scares and more characters to soak up the suffering, but each tweak puts it further from the DIY terror that made things work in the first place. “Denial” (R) — In 2000, American historian Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) was taken to court in London for libel because of her outspoken criticism of holocaust deniers, particularly David Irving (James Spall), a British historian who argued that there were never any gas chambers and that the genocide was a massive hoax. In the English court system, the burden of proof is on the accused, so her trial — in which she must silently watch her lawyers handle the proceedings — involves not only defending her right to stand against those who disagree with her, but also proving the holocaust happened. Wrestling with the echos of the holocaust is the perennial Oscar bait, but once you get passed that, you can see a surprisingly engaging courtroom drama with a strong herovillain conflict by Weisz (even if her Queens accent is a little atrocious) and Spall. While Spall’s Irving is a hateful condescending anti-Semite, he’s not to be taken as a dummy — it’s frightening to see how much power he gets from false information and gaming the legal system. “Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life” (PG) — Clean-cut troublemaker Rafe (Griffin Gluck) gets transferred to a new school run by an uptight rule-obsessed principal (Andrew Daly). As a mischievous and harmless young dude, Rafe does not like rules, so he makes it his mission to break every rule in the code of conduct with a string of highprofile pranks (think larger-scale than a whoopee cushions, but not as subversive as Bart Simpson.) Director Steven Carr (“Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Daddy Day Care”) gives

sitcom vibe while splicing in some animation. A few
good comedians in the cast may appeal to grownups (Daly, Rob Riggle, Retta), but much of their talent is smothered by the uneven direction. “The Monkey King 2” (PG) — A beloved adventure from Chinese folklore gets its second treatment as a big-budget CGI epic in this sequel that improves on its cloying predecessor. Sun Wukong is primate trickster-hero born from a divine crystal that fell to earth. In the
first installment, we saw Sun Wukong gain an arsenal of supernatural powers (flight, shapeshifting, self-duplication) then get imprisoned in a mountain as punishment for causing havoc in the heavens. Now a more mature demigod, the Monkey King must redeem himself on a journey to the West with a Buddhist monk and two more disgraced mythological beings. While the special effects are delivered by the ton, the production

“Shanghai Dawn,” with Chan as Imperial Guard Chon Wang and Wilson as American bandit Roy O’Bannon. Scarlett Johansson, who rode her Black Widow character through “Ironman” (2010), “The Avengers” (2012/’15) and “Captain America” (2014/’16), is moonlighting in the scifi action film “Ghost in the Shell,” with Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt (of “Boardwalk Empire” and “Hannibal”), opening March 31. She also has the comedy “Rock That Body,” with Kate McKinnon, Demi Moore, Ty Burrell and Colton Haynes, hitting screens June 23. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the producers of “Robin Hood Origins,” with Taren Egerton as Robin Hood, Jamie Foxx as Little John and Jamie Dornan as Will Scarlett. Robin Hood was last on screens in 2010, starring Russell Crowe as Robin and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, and made $321 million worldwide. Egerton will be seen starting June 16 in “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” with Oscar winners Julianne Moore, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges, as well as Channing Tatum. Maybe Johnny Depp wasn’t the bad guy in his marriage to Amber Heard. He denied her claims of spousal abuse, and now the producers of “London Fields” are suing her for costing them $10 million, making their $8 million budget soar to $12.5 million and for allegedly trying to force the film’s director to cut her nude scenes, which she agreed to film. Then she wouldn’t help to promote the movie and allegedly sabotaged the screening at The Toronto Film Festival, causing the film to be pulled from the festival and losing interested distributors. Depp was obviously duped and out of his depth in dealing with Heard ... or so we heard!

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL For the first time in years, Brooke, Ridge and RJ celebrated the holidays together as a family. Meanwhile, Pam and Charlie prepared for the traditional Forrester family Christmas. Liam disapproved of how Steffy wanted to spend Christmas at Eric’s house, knowing that Quinn would be there. Bill was depressed after seeing what Ridge gave Brooke.

Victor was disappointed that none of his heirs was interested in working at Newman Enterprises. An argument ensued about where Brash & Sassy should have its headquarters now that they had been kicked out of Jabot. Jill refused to work under the same roof as Victor. Nick and Dylan got into an argument at Faith’s recital. Lauren got defensive when Jill asked her how business was going. Devon told Hilary that he would give her creative control at GC Buzz. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for the New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den-mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid
• Saute vegetables briefly before adding them to soups. It creates more depth of flavor. • Got bathroom puddles from a shower curtain that just won’t stretch all the way to the edges? Try this trick: Place two shower curtains side by side, overlapping in the middle for one ring. Bathers enter and exit through the center instead of the ends. You’ll have plenty of curtain to make sure both ends of the tub are covered in full. • A small piece of white bread will clean out a coffee grinder in a flash. • “Take a photo of appointment cards with your smartphone. That way you can always double-check the time if there’s a problem.” — A.Z. in Alabama • “To warm up your bed, fill a long sock with rice and knot it closed. Microwave for two minutes. Slip the hot sock into bed to warm up the sheets, and keep it by your feet so they stay toasty as you drift off to sleep.” — L.W. in Wisconsin

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New
Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time,
until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New

Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor.
