ers with groups of up to twelve participants. Participants will learn self-management skills including symptom management, communication skills, relaxation techniques, goal setting and problem solving. “The emphasis of the program is on building skills to help manage

your health and maintain an active and fulfilling life,” said Cara Murray, Chronic Disease Management Facilitator with the Sunrise Health Region. “The program provides practical suggestions and support, which builds confidence in coping with the everyday challenges experi-

enced by individuals with a chronic condition.” Sessions are being offered free of charge in: Esterhazy – Mondays from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. starting March 6 Ituna – Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. starting April 5 Yorkton – Thursdays from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. start-

ing March 23 Further information on the “LiveWell with Chronic Conditions” program can be viewed on the Sunrise Health Region website under “Education/Events & Wo r k s h o p s / C h r o n i c Conditions” or contact Cara Murray, RN Navigator at 306-786-0875.

Regina Symphony Orchestra hits the road By Devin Wilger Staff Writer The Regina Symphony Orchestra is hitting the road. The Music on the Road program is meant to take the symphonies to communities outside of Regina and give people a taste of the symphony. They will be in Yorkton as part of the Stars for Saskatchewan series on March 1. Gordon Gerrard, music director of the RSO, says that this year will be a big year for the

road trip, in a very literal way. The symphony is taking more people on the road with them, with twenty-five musicians making the trip to communities in southern Saskatchewan. “It gives people more of an insight into our range of possibilities.” Gerrard promises a diverse mix of music in the program, ranging from strictly classical to something more pop. That will include a Mozart symphony, a range of music from

South Pacific and Rhapsody in Blue with Gerrard on piano. “It’s a snapshot of what we do in a regular season. We try to present things for different tastes, so there’s a little bit of everything. If you’re a hardcore classical fan, we’ve got Mozart. If you’re more into pop and musical theatre, we’ve got South Pacific.” The program for the show on the road is a reflection of the RSO’s focus when planning their regular season,

bringing something for everyone and for wildly different tastes. Whether it’s the music of Beethoven or that of James Bond, Gerrard feels it’s important to respond to different tastes when planning a program. “I don’t want it ever to seem like we’re putting priority on one over the other. It is really important to me that people feel like we’ve got them covered.” The ability to play a wide range of music is

also a testament to the ability of the musicians in the group, and Gerrard is continually impressed by the talent in the RSO. “That’s the thing about an orchestra like this with so many fantastic players, the versatility is astounding really. They can play anything, and we do.” This is Gerrard’s first season with the RSO, and as it’s his first time out to many of these communities. That was part of the reason behind bringing a

bigger orchestra for the on the road program, he wants to give communities outside of Regina the opportunity to see the full symphony. “For people in Yorkton who may not necessarily easily get to Regina, it’s important for us to enrich their lives as much as we enrich the lives of people in Regina proper.” The RSO will be in Yorkton on March 1 at the Anne Portnuff Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at ticketpro.ca.

Calling all Grades 5 to 8 writers By Thom Barker Staff Writer World Literacy Canada (WLC) is looking for stories from Grades 5 to 8 students. The non-profit organization, founded in 1955, supports international literacy and social justice in marginalized communities as a means to alleviate poverty. To get Canadian children excited about lit-

eracy, thinking about the issues, and inspired by a sense of community, WLC runs an annual contest called Write for a Better World. This year’s theme, what the contest organizers call their “story prompt” is loss and was created by awardwinning author Melanie Florence, famous for her story Missing Nimama. “It can be hard when we lose someone import-

ant to us in our lives, or when we watch someone close to us lose someone important to them,” the prompt says. “I remember when I lost someone important to me. In my case it was when my best friend moved away with her family.” Stories must be 400 words or less and submitted by April 1 via the WLC website www.worldlit.ca. The Top 10 finalists

will be selected by a committee of children’s writers and educators based on criteria such as creativity, clarity and organization, spelling and grammar and the quality of main character development. Florence will select the first place winner. The main prize is $500 and a Skype conversation with Florence. The other nine finalists will receive $50 and

the provinces and well ahead of the 4.1 per cent posted nationally. In December, manufacturing sales totalled

only surrogate for familial stability comes from the drug dealer who feeds off mom’s habit (Mahershala Ali). The movie, adapted from a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, deals with difficult real-world struggles — being poor and black in Miami pushes you out, and to be gay in those neighborhoods means to be further marginalized and threatened — and does so in a way that builds compassion without requiring similar experiences from the audience. “Allied” (R) — Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are the power-couple tasked with assassinating a Nazi while turning in high-power performances through layers of CG touch-ups. Love blossoms between the cloakand-dagger couple, but trust is hard to come by when spies go monogamous. Robert Zemeckis directs with a lot of excitement, a touch of nostalgia (“Casablanca” everywhere) and a heavy dose of green-screen. “Chronic” (R) — In a slow, quiet character study, Tim Roth plays David, a hospice attendant who sees to the needs of dying patients who can no longer take care of themselves in even the most basic ways. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital with a ruptured spleen that bled into his belly. His surgeon repaired it with a coil. He was not in an accident and had no injuries or any bruising anywhere on his body. His doctor had never seen this; he says a ruptured spleen usually is sustained from some sort of accident. My husband is almost 59, and in good health otherwise. How

could this happen, and could this happen again? — J.C. ANSWER: The spleen removes defective red blood cells from the circulation, and it also destroys bacteria and infected cells. In fact, it is in many ways like a big lymph node, responding to infections by activating and enlarging. Although a ruptured spleen is well-described in the literature, I’ve never seen a case like your husband’s either. The last ruptured spleen I saw was a college football player who was simultaneously hit by two opposing players, one on either side, both much larger than he was. Most people with spleen rupture had an enlarged spleen to begin with, from

cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma, infection such as EBV (the virus that causes mononucleosis), inflammatory conditions such as pancreatitis or mechanical causes such as pregnancy. A few cases are related to medications, and a few have no identifiable cause for rupture. As far as risk of it happening again, there you have me. I found one paper that says the prognosis is “excellent.” I would have to refer you back to his surgeon. People who have had their spleens removed are at risk for certain infections, and should have a vaccine for pneumococcus, a major cause of pneumonia. The vaccine is normally given at age 65. Your husband should speak with his doctor about getting it now (since I don’t

• On March 1, 1692, in Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, authorities begin seeking out witches after two children began experiencing fits. After a doctor concluded that the children were suffering the effects of witchcraft, others stepped forward and incriminated more than 150 women and men of Satanic practices. • On March 5, 1770, a mob of American colonists gathers at the Customs House in Boston and begins taunting British soldiers. The British regulars responded by firing their rifles, killing five colonists. Later, two British soldiers had their thumbs branded with an “M” for

murder as punishment. • On Feb. 27, 1922, in Washington, D.C., the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote, is unanimously declared constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. • On March 4, 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt is inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States. In his inaugural address, Roosevelt outlined his “New Deal,” an expansion of the federal government as an instrument of employment opportunity and welfare. • On March 3, 1952, the U.S. Supreme Court upholds a New York state law that prohibits communists from teaching in public schools. know if his spleen is now considered normal). DEAR DR. ROACH: I read in your column that for vaginal atrophy (dryness/itching) you suggest that a woman use topical cream instead of estrogen cream. I am 59 years old, and have been using Premarin cream externally for a month with noticeable results. I use a dab every other day. Should I continue to use it even when I don’t have symptoms, or only as needed? If you think non-hormonal cream would be better, could you suggest one? I have tried one, but it didn’t seem to be effective. — A.A.

ANSWER: I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. “Topical” in this case meant a vaginal estrogen cream, as opposed to estrogen taken by mouth. I would continue using it, since it has been effective. Most women use it twice a week after initial treatment. Non-estrogen creams are fine for many women, but estrogen creams like Premarin usually are more effective. Dryness and itching may be caused by recurring vaginal infections, which are often troubling to women. The booklet explains them and their treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr.

Roach — No. 1203W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Make proposals special and successful A marriage proposals is a couple’s first official step toward the altar. Tradition dictates that men pop the question, with their surprised — and hopefully soon-to-be-fiancées — ultimately deciding if wedding bells will be on the horizon. Proposing marriage can be nervewracking. However, if the time seems right and love is in the air, popping the question can be exciting. Regardless of who is proposing marriage, the following strategies can help make proposals memorable and successful. Turn the tides An old Irish tradition

known as “The Lady’s Privilege” was established in the fifth century by a nun named St. Brigid. She decided to create an opportunity for women to propose marriage. This day fell on every leap year, February 29. Centuries later, women can still use this tradition as the impetus to take the marriage reigns into their own hands. But women need not wait for the next leap year to propose. Many women view proposing as an empowering action that is tied to the evolving view of independent women. Couples are negotiating more in the marriage process, and the

dissolution of commonly held practices is occurring more often. Choose a sentimental location Couples will remember the proposal for the rest of their lives. So choose a proposal location that has sentimental connections. Think about where the first “I love you” was uttered or where a first date occurred. These can be prime locations to pop the question. Note her style Engagement rings play a big role in many couples’ proposals. One person’s style is not necessarily what his partner will like. Bigger isn’t always bet-

fathers for “permission” to wed their daughters. However, asking your partner’s family for their blessing is a sign of respect and can add a romantic and heartfelt touch to the proposal.

Capture the moment Though we live in an age when every moment of people’s lives is documented with videos and photographs posted to social media, proposals still stand out as extra special moments. Hire a professional photographer to discreetly capture the proposal and your partner’s reaction so it can be cherished for years to come.

Selecting a comfortable wedding gown Many brides-to-be visit bridal shops with specific goals in mind regarding the style of their wedding gowns. Some women come equipped with magazine tear-outs or pull up ideas on their mobile phones. Others may have an entire scrapbook filled with various ideas they’ve been compiling for years. Much consideration is given to wedding gowns. The cost and silhouette of the dress may garner the bulk of that consideration, but brides might want to spend more time considering comfort. Depending on the time of day their weddings take place, brides can spend 12 hours or more in their wedding gowns on their wedding day. However, when shopping for their gowns, brides may prioritize beauty over comfort, even though it’s entirely

possible to find a gown that’s both stunning and comfortable. When staff and friends or family who have come along to offer advice start to blush over wedding gowns, bridesto-be may feel pressured to downplay any discomfort they feel. To make sure brides look flawless and elegant but are still comfortable in their wedding gowns, consider the following tips. • Know what to highlight and what to cover up. No two body types are the same, and many women feel certain parts of their bodies are their best assets while they want to downplay others. Try on gowns that play up your best features. If you have shapely legs, consider a dramatic gown with a slit to show them off. Certain gowns can enhance the decollete or show off an hourglass shape. Remember, many

gowns can be modified so that you feel secure and confident. Sleeves can be added or fabric placed to cover up any perceived flaws. Confidence and pride are important parts of the comfort factor. • Get sized correctly. Bridal gown sizes do not coincide with street sizes. Depending on the manufacturer, brides may have to select gowns that are several sizes larger than they would normally wear. This should not be a cause for alarm. Brides should go by their measurements. Attempting to squeeze into a dress that is too small will only lead to discomfort on the wedding day. • Purchase the right undergarments. Improperly fitting bras, shapewear and other undergarments can lead to discomfort as well. Some seamstresses can sew in supportive cups to remove the need for

separate bras. Brides can explore various options to reduce the visibility of certain accoutrements. • Move around in the gown. Brides should not just stand in front of the mirror and smile when trying on gowns. Put them through their paces. Try sitting, bending and even a little dancing. Make sure the dress is comfortable to move around in. • Try different options. The gown brides have in mind may not be the one they ultimately go home with. Explore different styles and materials. Choose cooler, breezier fabrics and lightweight gowns, like crêpe, georgette or organza, for summer weddings. Heavier fabrics, such as brocade, may be more comfortable in the winter. Wedding gowns can be both beautiful and comfortable for those who know how to shop.

Throw a casual wedding to remember Elegant, lavish weddings provide moments couples will remember for years to come. But while such storybook ceremonies and receptions remain popular, casual affairs are gaining popularity. According to the bridal resource The Knot, more and more couples are opting for less pageantry and more laid back panache when planning their weddings. For those who prefer something more intimate and more personalized, casual weddings may be right on target. There are many advantages to having a “luxe with less” wedding, including the ability to break molds and impart more of the couple’s personality into the event. Another advantage is the price tag. The average U.S. wedding, according to The Knot 2014 Real Weddings Study, costs $31,213. In some urban areas, particularly New

York City, average costs are three times that amount. Golden Girl Finance, a leader in financial digital media, has found that Canadian weddings average $31,000 with honeymoon included. Although wedding costs have gone up, the average number of wedding guests has gone down. As such, certain couples might look to rein in other aspects of their wedding. Transforming the festivities into a casual affair can help keep the overall budget low while still allowing for an exciting and enjoyable event. To put casual plans into motion, consider these ideas to help the wedding vision come to fruition. Venue Catering halls and other reception sites do a wonderful job of meeting the needs of their clientele. However, food and beverage costs are often the most expensive wedding expense. To reduce

edos and gowns can opt for casual footwear, such as athletic shoes. Place wildflowers in crystal vases. These are just some methods to give a rich feel without removing the fun element.

the per-guest cost and also incorporate some variety into their wedding days, couples can consider a venue change. Look for public locations that allow couples to hire their own caterer, which may be a favorite restaurant or specialty food shop. The cost per person may decrease dramatically from the venue costs. Changing the venue also enables couples to pick unique spots that may

hold special meaning to them. For example, couples can choose the site of their first date or the location where their proposal took place. Contrast Enjoy a casual, freespirited wedding that incorporates some aspects of formality in an off-beat way. Think about serving fast food, such as fried chicken or pizza, on fine china. Those wearing tux-

Personal touches Menus or wedding programs printed at home in a fun font can set the casual tone couples are looking for. Look for eclectic fabrics to use as gift tags or napkin holders. Handpainted signs or a hodgepodge of picture frames can display pertinent information, such as itineraries or seating arrangements. Encourage friends or family to contribute a favorite menu item to the food offerings. A homebaked dessert can be delicious and budget-friendly. Wardrobe Clothing often indicates the formality of an

occasion. Everyone from the wedding party to the guests can dress down. Sundresses can replace taffeta bridesmaids’ gowns. Guys can opt for tailored sports coats with jeans. Guests may feel comfortable in less formal attire that facilitates dancing and mingling. Casual weddings are becoming more popular as many couples are playing down the party for various reasons.

Incorporate flowers in various ways Weddings are special moments for couples and the guests they invite to share their happiness on their big days. Beautiful weddings require substantial planning, as every last detail must be considered for couples to enjoy the wedding of their dreams. Flowers play a big role in many weddings, and couples can add beauty and ambiance to the event by using floral arrangements in various ways. Modern floral arrangements are stunning, and many couples may not know that herbs, spices and flowers have been used in weddings for centuries. Today, flowers are used to decorate wedding venues, impart sweet fragrances and complement formal attire, but in ancient times they were used differently. Flowers were used to bestow good luck on the couple and keep bad omens away. Brides carried aromatic flowers and spices to keep evil spirits from spoiling the festivities, and some even tucked bulbs of garlic into their bouquets. In ancient Greece and Rome, both the bride and groom wore garlands made out of strong-smelling herbs flowers around their necks or heads. These wreaths were considered gifts of nature, and thus extremely appropriate for a wedding.

Traditionally, bridesmaids would be responsible for fashioning these floral components. In ancient Sweden, young girls would carry small bouquets of fragrant herbs down the aisle and the groom would put thyme in his pocket. These aromatics were thought to help keep trolls at bay. Besides warding off spirits or hungry trolls, flowers also served more practical purposes throughout history. During the Middle Ages, people bathed less frequently than they do today. Bathing might only have occurred twice a year, once during summer and then again at Christmastime. Because many weddings took place in the spring, flowers were used to mask bodily odors. Not only were flowers and herbs carried, but they also would be sewn into clothing. Modern brides and grooms may no longer see their wedding days as times for opportunistic evil spirits. But that doesn’t mean that couples cannot borrow from ancient traditions and incorporate flowers into their weddings in various ways. • Wreaths and garlands: Ask the florist to weave small flower buds, berries and vines to a headband, wreath or piece of twine so that

Apart from bouquets, flowers can enhance weddings in several different ways and take their cue from historical traditions. the bride and groom can wear these flowers in the way they were worn by ancient Greeks and Romans. When coupled with Grecian-styled wedding gowns, brides can look like beautiful goddesses on their wedding days. • Fragrant favors: Tuck dried rose petals

and other fragrant flowers into sachets that are embroidered with the wedding date and couple’s names. Guests can use these sachets to keep clothings smelling fresh in drawers or as subtle air fresheners around the house. • Edible flowers: Ask the caterer to make meals flower-friendly by including some edible blooms in the salad or as a garnish on meals. • Raining petals: In lieu of bubbles or birdseed, guests can shower the newlyweds with rose petals after the ceremony. • Memorial: Some couples like to honor departed family members. Floral arrangements with small placards can make for fitting memorials.

Successful toasts help shape social events A toast is a drink raised in the health or honor of someone. Such salutes are typically accompanied by some heartfelt words or tokens of advice. Toasts are a common component of social gatherings, including retirement parties, milestone birthdays and weddings. Toast of the town It’s difficult to pinpoint who originated the practice of toasting. Several ancient societies would raise a glass in honor of deities or special guests. Ancient Greeks offered libations to the gods as a part of ritualistic practices and also as a point to drink to each other’s good

health. Ancient Romans at one point instituted a practice that all people must drink to Emperor Augustus at each meal. The term “toast” has an interesting history. Dating back to the 16th century, “toast” refers to a piece of toasted bread. A piece of toast was commonly added to wine during this time because wine was quite inferior in quality then compared to modern vintages. Stale bread was placed into the jug to soak up acidity and improve the flavor. The wine also improved the palatability of the old or spiced bread. According to National Geographic magazine, by the 18th century, the term

“toast” had been transferred from the floating piece of bread to the person honored by the toast. Eventually, “toast” represented the drink raised or the words offered with the gesture. Prepare for a toast Toasts can be off-thecuff remarks shared in the moment, but for many special events, they should be prepared well in advance. Nowadays, some toastgivers devote extra time to preparing toasts, par-

ticularly because they know these sentiments can live on indefinitely on social media. Giving a toast can induce anxiety, but some nerves can be relieved simply by doing one’s homework and not procrastinating. Writing tips A person giving a toast is trying to gain the attention of a group of people who may not be very attentive. These tips can

improve the content of the toasts and their delivery. • Keep ‘you’ out of it. This toast is not about you. It’s about the person you are honoring. Therefore, do not put any self-congratulatory messages in the toast. Make it all about the person — even beginning the toast with that person’s name. • Hook people in. Open the toast with a good joke or anecdote that will help introduce the person of honor. For example, Jake is a great guy because he’s the type of person who will offer to meet you at your dorm room at 2 a.m. with pizza and beer to get you through a study session. Too bad

he has a horrible sense of direction and repeatedly shows up at the wrong door. • Tell a story. Reference the person in the toast, other audience members, and even yourself if you can be painted in a selfdeprecating light. • Keep it short. This is a toast, not a monologue. Be brief so that the audience doesn’t lose interest. Set a five-minute limit. • Wrap it up. Conclude the toast by tying the story back to the introduction and making sure to include the audience once more. This will help you get the biggest laughs and applause.

Different roles for the father of the bride Popular movies and televisions shows give the impression that the job of the father of the bride in a wedding is ultimately about making sure the festivities are adequately funded. In the movies, fathers fret about the costs of everything from flowers to photos. But gone are the days when the father of the bride bankrolls his daughter’s entire wedding. The Knot’s “2014 Real Wedding Survey” reported that, on average, the bride’s parents contribute 43 percent of the total cost of a wedding; the bride and groom contribute another 43 percent; the groom’s parents spend 12 percent; the remaining 2 percent of the budget is paid for by family members or friends. That frees up Dad for other roles in wedding planning. With some creativ-

ity, couples can find ways to incorporate the father of the bride into the festivities in even more productive ways. • Wedding sites: Assign dear old dad the important task of looking at potential wedding reception sites prior to visit-

ing them yourself. He may have certain connections through work or attended business or leisure occasions at catering halls and other venues. Dad’s connections can pay off. Let him impart his negotiating skills and find the best deals with the ideal backdrop for the festivities. • Wardrobe: Let your father assist the best man and other groomsmen in securing their tuxedos or other wardrobe essentials. Dad also can step in and return rented items following the wedding. • Beverages: Dad may be fitting to keep tabs on what is occurring at the bar during the reception, ensuring that guests’ needs are being met. He also can keep an eagle eye trained on anyone who may have overindulged and needs to take a break.

• Speech: Give your father an opportunity to shine by letting him make a speech. Remember, this is a momentous day for Dad as well, as he may be trying to come to terms with his daughter starting a new life. • Father-daughter song: Let Dad pick father-daughter song, and go with his choice even if you had something else in mind. • Ceremony: Even if you prefer a less traditional wedding ceremony, let your father walk you down the aisle. This will likely be a moment he’ll remember for years to come. Expand the father of the bride’s role in the wedding by assigning him tasks where he can put his style, experience and excitement to good use.

How guests can cut costs and still attend weddings Couples and/or their families can expect to spend tens of thousands of dollars on their weddings before saying “I do,” making weddings one of the largest expenses for a couple apart from buying a house or new car. But bridesand grooms-to-be are not the only ones who may have to invest quite a great deal on wedding days. Guests, including bridal party members, may also be responsible to pay a substantial sum. According to the 2016 American Express Spending & Saving Tracker, Americans expected to spend an average of $703 per each wedding they attended in 2016. Few people are willing to miss the wedding of a beloved family member or friend, even when the costs of attending the wedding can be high. Fortunately, there are ways for wedding invitees to attend the festivities without breaking the bank.

• Shop around for lodging. Many couples arrange for discounted hotel rooms for their outof-town wedding guests. But guests might be able to save even more by shopping around for their own discounted rates at hotels and other lodging accommodations. Websites like Orbitz and Hotels.com can compare rates at all the hotels in a given city, letting wedding guests explore all of their alternatives in a single search. Guests who are especially patient can use the Hotel Tonight app, which allows users to book heavily discounted rooms no more than

seven days in advance of their expected occupancy. Guest also can try finding affordable lodging on the popular homestay network Airbnb. • Book travel early. Many travelers insist the best flight deals can be found as late as six weeks before the desired departure date. But there’s no guarantee that waiting that long to book flights will benefit wedding guests. If the patient approach does not pan out, guests might be forced to choose between costly flights or not attending the wedding. Budget-conscious travelers may find it less

stressful to book flights as early as possible. Doing so allows guests to find flights at the times they most prefer to fly, and it also makes it possible to spread the cost of attending a wedding out over a longer period of time. • Say no to joining the bridal party. While it’s an honor when brides or grooms ask certain friends or family members to be in their bridal parties, guests should not feel compelled to accept that invitation if they cannot afford it. If money is tight, explain the situation to the bride and groom, who might even offer to help cover some of the costs of the wedding. Even if couples cannot afford that gesture, they will understand if friends or family members cannot cover the additional costs associated with being in a bridal party. • Split expenses. Another way for guests to save money is to split certain expenses with fellow guests. Single

Tips for a special mother/son dance Weddings celebrate the unions of happy couples ready to pledge their lives to each other. In theory, the wedding day spotlight should be shared equally by brides and grooms. But brides often eclipse their grooms, as guests are drawn to stunning bridal gowns. Though grooms might play second fiddle for much of their wedding days, there is one moment when all eyes are on the groom and a special lady in his life. The mother/son dance is a wedding tradition that many grooms embrace as their opportunity to show their mothers how much they love and appreciate them. The mother/son dance is an ideal time to create a special moment,

and the following are some tips to personalize the dance. • Precede the bride and her father. Make your own tradition and switch up the timing of the dances. Be the first to take a spin on the dance floor and set the tone for the other traditional songs to come. • Create a photo montage. Work with an entertainment company or photographer to create a slideshow of images showing you and your mother together and separately. If possible, include some photos that were shot during the wedding ceremony, asking the photographer to capture the look on your mother’s face during pivotal moments of the

ceremony. • Show off your dance skills. One increasingly popular wedding trend is for fathers and brides to choreograph the father/ daughter dances. Grooms and their mothers can follow suit, particularly if you both have some stellar dance moves. • Let Mom choose the song. Give your mother the opportunity to express her sentiments to you, as mothers of the groom do not typically toast their sons during weddings or even rehearsal dinners. • Invite other son/ mother duos up. If the idea of dancing alone with your mother is a bit intimidating, give other mothers in attendance an opportunity to share the

spotlight. Celebrate all mothers in attendance, encouraging any mothers and sons who are present to dance together. Grooms may not garner the bulk of guests’ attention on their wedding days. But they can take steps to make their special dances with their mothers more memorable and unique.

guests can share hotel rooms with fellow guests attending solo, and even couples can join up with other couples and split the cost of double rooms. Sharing expenses such as rental cars and trips to

and from the airport is another way for guests to coordinate their efforts to save money. The costs of attending a wedding are growing. But savvy guests can save money in various ways.

Arranging wedding day transportation Weddings are momentous events for the couple tying the knot as well as all of the friends and family invited to share in the big day. Before couples can tie the knot and cut a rug at their receptions, everyone, couple and guests included, must arrive at the location (or locations if the ceremony site differs from the reception area). Though arranging wedding day transportation can be difficult, there are ways to make the process go more smoothly for guests and bridal party members. Determine your needs Before a transportation plan can be made, couples must first map out their needs. Everything should be built around the ceremony. Once the ceremony time has been set, the rest of the day can be arranged around that time. Determine how much time is needed to travel

Have your getaway car ready Couples generally opt to arrive to the wedding and reception in style, but take their own vehicles or cabs home afterward. This requires some advanced planning. Enlist the help of friends to park the return-trip car in a convenient location. Check with the catering hall to see if a vehicle can be left in their lot overnight. Otherwise, arrange to grab a ride home with friends or family.

from the ceremony to the reception area. Allocate enough time before the cocktail hour to allow for traffic, photos and any other needs that may take up time. Couples do not want anyone, included themselves, to feel rushed. Once the timing has been orchestrated, couples can figure out exactly which types of transportation will be required. Book personal transportation first Happy couples must make their own transportation their top priority. Arrange for the couples’ transportation between five and seven months in advance of the wedding. It could be preferable to book it even further in advance if a couple is getting married around a holiday or during prom season when limousines and party buses are in high demand. Remember, unless the bride-to-be

plans to be seen by her groom, couples will need separate transportation to the ceremony site. Factor multiple vehicles into the wedding transportation budget. Explore your personality Brides and grooms

have many transportation options at their disposal. If a limousine doesn’t add the spark of creativity they desire, they can opt for a VW bus or a retro roadster. Outdoor enthusiasts might want to ride off on horseback, while

easy riders might prefer to rev up the engine on a Harley-Davidson. Couples should never feel penned in by tradition, especially when something else makes them feel remarkable and the budget allows for it.

Consider others’ needs Have the names and phone numbers of taxi or ridesharing services available for those who may not be able to drive after the party. Elderly or disabled guests might appreciate prearranged transportation as well. Although couples can arrange for transportation as a courtesy to others, they don’t need to make arrangements for everyone.

Trimming the wedding guest list

Weddings are a time to celebrate, and many couples hope to invite as many people as possible to share their excitement. A 2014 study by researchers at the University of Denver found that couples who invite at least 150 guests to the wedding may have happier marriages. The study examined 418 people who were single at the beginning of the study and married five years later. It found that 47 percent of those people who had gotten married in front of at least 150 guests had “highquality marriages,” while those with 50 or fewer guests fell short. While guests make weddings more enjoyable, and may increase the propensity to enjoy a more successful marriage, couples must be practical and consider their wedding budgets when creating their guest lists. The average American wedding includes 120 guests, according to a 2015 Newlywed Survey released by WeddingWire. Couples who are finding it difficult to create and pare down their guest lists can employ the following tips. • Create initial lists. When jotting down potential guests’ names, write down everyone you want to invite, regardless of budget. Then list the musthave guests for the wedding. This should include the family and friends with whom you interact on a regular basis. Create a separate column for guests BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)

who don’t make the musthave list. • Separate friends from friends’ friends. If you don’t see people outside of events set up by mutual friends, you should not feel obligated to invite those people to the wedding. They are more likely friends of your friends and not your close friends. • Know the guest list ceiling. Catering halls or reception rooms often can only accommodate a certain number of people. Know this number before making a final list. The limits of the space may serve as the catalyst for trimming the guest list. • Consider coworkers carefully. Think about whether you’d still be friends with your coworkers if the company dissolved tomorrow. If not, you should not feel obligated to invite them. • Have we met? If you don’t remember interacting with a person (your parent’s long lost friend from high school) or the person has never met your significant other, then they probably can be cut. If parents insist on inviting someone you barely remember, they should help defray the costs. • Cut out the kids. Even though children’s dinner costs may be lower than adults’, inviting children can significantly increase the guest list. A no-child policy at the reception can

save money. • Avoid uncomfortable situations. Unless you have remained particularly close, keep former boyfriends and girlfriends off

of the guest list. • Ask for an unbiased opinion. Give the editing pen to someone else if you cannot make a decision. This person may

help weed out extraneous guests. Paring down a wedding guest list can be a difficult process, but couples should work together and respect each other’s concerns when creating their final list.

As a child, I remember coming into the kitchen and hearing my mother’s pressure cooker rattling away. It sounded like a runaway steam engine had taken over the kitchen stove. I’d heard stories about pressure cookers blowing up and leaving what was supposed to be dinner all over the ceiling. So I must admit, I was afraid to use the Fagor pressure cooker I received as a gift, until I realized that modern pressure cookers have been completely redesigned. For example, my Fagor pressure cooker has three safety valves that allow any possible excess pressure to escape, so the cooking experience is completely secure. The pressure cooker was created by French inventor Denis Papin in 1680. The clunky heavy metal pressure regulator of old that made so much noise was the updated version of his original “marmite de Papin” or Papin Digestor. Fagor has created a sleek, easy-to-use pressure cooker with a temperature device built into the tight-fitting lid with a locking handle. When the lid is properly locked into place, an airand steam-tight seal is created.

As the cooking liquid in the pressure cooker is heated to the boiling point (212 F), steam is created. Since the steam cannot escape from the sealed pot, intense pressure is created. The internal cooking temperature will vary depending on the different levels of pressure created by the trapped steam. Foods cooked under high pressure reach a temperature of 250 F, which is 38 F hotter than when food is boiled in a normal pot. This speeds up the cooking process considerably. The intense pressure also reduces cooking time by one-third, which saves energy too. It also keeps your kitchen cool, retains more than 50 percent of the vitamins and minerals in your foods — as well as the natural colors — and can cook without oil to reduce fat and calories. The steam pressure breaks down the fibers in food in a very short time, leaving food moist and succulent, with an intense intermingling of flavors. The beauty of using a pressure cooker is that you can quickly and easily turn almost any type of produce, grain or cut of meat into a fantastic meal. And don’t forget about desserts, which can be made in half the time. If you haven’t used a pressure cooker before, my recipe for Pressure Cooker Quinoa Salad is

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I really loved Jason Isaacs in “Awake” a few years back, and I was super bummed when it was canceled. Can you tell me what he’s up to now? — Jeremy G., via email A: The British thespian — who’s best known to “Harry Potter” fans as Lucius Malfoy — currently is co-starring in “The OA,” a science-fiction supernatural series that premiered on Netflix in December and has been getting rave reviews. I caught up with the talented actor recently during a press junket for a Celebration of Harry Potter weekend at Universal Studios Orlando, and he had quite a valid comparison when asked about inclusiveness and tolerance as they relate to today’s world, and how it relates to the world of “Harry Potter.”

FUNCTI NAL Rehabilitati n is pleased to welcome back

Jason Isaacs in “Harry Potter” Jason described Lucius: “There is a very recognizable racist and supremacist, acting out of fear and thinking that the past was a better time. PRESSURE COOKER QUINOA SALAD (Serves 6) Quinoa is a complete protein source that also is high in iron, magnesium and fiber. It has a delicate, slightly sweet and nutty flavor, and easily can be used in any recipe that calls for rice or pasta. Quinoa has a natural coating, called saponin. Saponin can make the cooked grain taste bitter if it isn’t rinsed thoroughly just before cooking. Boxed quinoa is often pre-rinsed, but it’s best to rinse it again. Toasting quinoa after it has been rinsed improves the texture of the grain. You can change this recipe to incorporate your favorite herbs, spices, vegetables and flavorings as desired. •1 cup black quinoa, rinsed well •1 teaspoon olive oil plus more for drizzling (about 2 tablespoons) •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •1/2 teaspoon garlic powder •1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1-1/2 cups of water or broth •1 large lime or lemon, zested and juiced •1-1/2 cups of chopped, raw vegetables (bell pepper, purple onion, celery, avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.) Measure 1 cup of quinoa and place into a finemesh strainer. Rinse thoroughly with cool water for could look down on the rest of the world. You don’t need to look too far to find many politicians standing on those platforms. Those issues are never more relevant than today, [but] they are dealt with in this kind of magical world.” Stop by celebrityextraonline.com to read more of what Jason had to say, as well as Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Warwick Davis (Flitwick/ Griphook) and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy). Q: Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors, and I absolutely loved the film that was made from her book “My Sister’s Keeper.” My sister says another one of her books is going to be a feature film. about 2 minutes, rubbing and swishing the quinoa with your hand. Drain. Heat the olive oil in the pressure cooker pot (without the lid) over mediumhigh heat. Add the drained quinoa, salt, pepper, garlic powder and cayenne pepper. Cook, stirring, for about 1 minute to let the water evaporate and to toast the quinoa and the spices. Add the water or broth, mixing well. Close and lock the lid according to manufacturer’s instructions. Turn heat to high; when pressure is reached, lower the heat and cook for 1 minute at high pressure (or 2 minutes at low pressure). To release the pressure, turn off heat and wait 10 minutes for steam to release naturally. Then release the remaining pressure by carefully opening the valve. (Even if you hear the pressure releasing completely before the 10 minutes are up, do not remove the lid.) When the time is up, remove the lid and fluff the quinoa gently with a fork. Toss quinoa with the zest, juice, vegetables and a drizzle of olive oil. Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. adapted for the big screen. So far, Julia Roberts and Viola Davis are attached to the film, and it will be produced by “La La Land” producer Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, who produced “Drive” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” The plot centers on Ruth Jefferson, a black nurse in a maternity ward who is instructed not to touch a white-supremacist couple’s baby. When the baby dies in Ruth’s care, however, a lawsuit follows, and public defender Kennedy McQuarrie is put on the case.

Q: When will “Stranger Things” be back for another season on Netflix? — Linda D. in New Mexico

A: Season two of the cult-hit series drops on Halloween — which is all too appropriate — and hopefully we’ll finally get some answers about what happened to Eleven and discover more scary secrets about the Upside Down. The preview that Netflix released doesn’t tell us a whole lot — yet — about what’s happening plotwise, but early reports place the time period as pretty much picking up right where we left off at the end of season one.
