DEAR DR. ROACH: I am fair-skinned and have had sunburns in the past, so I have been diligent about looking for rough, scaly skin patches that might turn into cancer and dark irregular patches that might be melanoma. But I had not read anything about watching for a pore that bleeds, heals and bleeds again. I have a place like that on my nose and just thought it was thin skin. There was no bump, no redness, no scaling; just occasional bleeding. Then it would heal and every-
thing seemed fine. Now I find out from my dermatologist that it is basal skin cancer, it grows down into the skin, and I will have to have Mohs surgery to remove the cancer and plastic surgery to repair it. I want everyone to know to watch for this kind of symptom and get to a doctor immediately if they have it. — W.R. ANSWER: A basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer, probably the most common cancer in the U.S., and is most common among lightskinned people. It’s unusual in people with very dark skin. It is more common in men, and increases in frequency with age. As you note, sunlight is the major risk factor, although sunburns aren’t necessary to develop BCC. Use of tanning beds also greatly increase the risk for skin cancer, and I strongly dis-
courage their use. BCCs can appear in several different forms. They often appear as a nodule on the face, with dilated blood vessels that can bleed and ulcerate (causing a shallow pit). On the trunk, they can appear as a superficial red patch. They also can appear as firm, deeper, scar-like lesions. Because they can appear in such a varied manner, ANY new skin lesion, especially in a light-skinned person with sun exposure, should be evaluated by a professional. Any nonhealing sore or one that periodically bleeds is particularly at risk. Although BCCs rarely, if ever, spread outside the skin, they can grow locally and be disfiguring. Once one has occurred, additional skin cancers are much more likely, so a
periodic total skin exam by a dermatologist is essential. DEAR DR. ROACH: I developed a ganglion cyst in the palm of my hand virtually overnight. Where did it come from, and how do I get rid of it? It’s very annoying. — V.L. ANSWER: A ganglion is a cystic structure that is associated with a tendon sheath or joint. They most commonly occur in the wrist. It’s not clear why they occur: One theory is that they are from the tissue around a joint that makes joint fluid, the synovium. They often go away by themselves, but a surgeon can remove fluid from them with a syringe, and sometimes inject medication to keep them from recurring. Surgery is occasionally necessary for painful ganglia that keep
Wagantall makes announcement Cathay Wagantall, Member of Parliament (Yorkton-Melville), Having received many calls from farm families through the area, Cathay Wagantall, Member of Parliament for YorktonMelville, wants to ensure everyone knows they still have the opportunity to let the Liberal government know how exactly they feel about the proposed plan to scrap the income tax deferral option. The consultation period on cash purchase tickets has been extended until July 24, 2017. Comments should be sent to: consultation_ tax_2017@canada.ca. “I have yet to hear from someone who thinks this is a good idea,” said Wagantall referring to the elimination of cash purchase tickets, which was announced in March as part of the Liberals’ 2017 budget. “What I have heard are comments like
‘ridiculous’, ‘they are taking away the only option we have’, and ‘this will never work’, from those that will be affected.” Following the budget announcement, Wagantall sent a letter to federal Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and federal Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAuley urging the Liberal government to resist any notion to scrap the income tax deferral option. The response from Minister MacAuley was to invite stakeholders to participate in the consultation. With the extension of the consultation period, from May 24 to July 24, the Finance Department’s website now reads that stakeholders “are invited to provide comments on this income tax deferral, including any appropriate transitional period or rules.” “While the Liberal government may believe, ‘there is arguably no long-
er a clear policy rationale for maintaining the tax deferral accorded to deferred cash purchase tickets received as payment for listed grains,’ as stated during the unveiling of the 2017 budget, our farmers do not agree,” stated Wagantall. “As it is right now, farmers can defer the sale of grain to help maintain balance in an industry where a secure and definite income is anything but secure and definite. Farmers are at the whim of global markets, of the rail and shipping companies and so much of their success depends on the weather. How do you control any of that? “Deferring income allows farmers to prepare for a bad year, without looking to the government for financial support, and a bad year can be as simple as a lack of rail cars to allow for a grain sale. As one farmer put it, ‘if grain moved the way it is sup-

posed to, maybe this could work’. Many farmers in my area have just sold and shipped last year’s crop in the last month or two, and are now being told that they may have to claim this year’s income as well – that’s two years-worth of grain sales in one income year. Imagine the income tax they will be charged,” Wagantall wrote in her letter to the Ministers. “Canadian farmers are excellent business managers, and understand the necessity of deferred income from grain sales. These same farmers are predicting flooded markets and a plummet in prices if this goes through. “I urge every farmer concerned to participate in the consultation, as Minister MacAuley suggested,” said Wagantall.
recurring. I urge you to resist the advice you will get to whack it with a book (traditionally, a Bible). That can cause many small ones. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them
in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

factor and thrillists will get their share of gore.
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Everybody Loves Somebody” (PG-13) — Clara Barron (Karla Souza) almost has it all with a fulfilling career as a doctor living the fab life in L.A. What she doesn’t have is a significant other, a fact her large loving family will not let her forget. So when Clara is guilted into attending a wedding at the family home in Mexico, she brings reinforcements in the form of handsome co-worker Asher (Ben O’Toole) to pose as her boyfriend. No harm no foul until ex-boyfriend Daniel (Jose Maria Yazpik) shows up, bringing with him all the magic of the past. Formulaic? Yes. Sweet and charming rom-com that brings to life Spanish, English, sentimentality and that big-family love dynamic? Also yes. “Life” (R) — A team of quick-witted space cowboys headed by Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds attempt the ultimate astronaut hat trick: retrieve a pod filled with research materials from a planet (in this case, Mars) and return to Earth. The pod contains a few cells of the stuff of which dreams (and fame) are made — a basic life form they christen “Calvin.” At first it’s exciting, and then it becomes terrifying as Calvin evolves and begins to stalk the crewmembers one by one. Not as good as “Alien,” but science-fiction fans will be satisfied with the claustrophobia
“Wilson” (R) — With no filter and no boundaries, Wilson (Woody Harrelson) makes his way through life offering up unsolicited commentary to anyone with an ear. Then one day he finds out that his ex-wife, Pippi (Laura Dern), gave up a child for adoption 17 years ago. He convinces Pippi to join him on his adventure to track down daughter Claire (Isabella Amara) and take a crack at fatherhood, albeit after a very late start. Based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clownes, “Wilson” could come off as cartoonish, but never does, thanks to an endearing performance by Harrelson. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t quite grip the heartstrings, and there’s not enough quirk to fill the gaps. There is, however, quite a bit of filthy language and enough laughs to make it a solid rental. “Altitude” (R) — A recalcitrant FBI hostage negotiator (Denise Richards) takes a plane ride, a desk job waiting on arrival. The man seated next to her tells her his life is in danger; the rest of his criminal gang is on the plane, they’re taking it over and there’s a price on his head. Can she get him off the plane alive? Should she? While the fight scenes are passable for a low-budget B movie starring Dolph Lundgren and UFC’s Chuck Liddell as baddies, if you absolutely must see Denise Richards in an action movie, rent “Starship Troopers” before your evening goes down in flames alongside this movie.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Will “Pure Genius” return for another season? I really liked the message of hope it gave me that one day medical science will advance to that degree. — Sharon N., via email Q: Are they going to bring back the Thursdaynight show on CBS at 10 p.m. called “Pure Genius”? It was a very good and interesting show, but it wasn’t on for very long. — Pauline D., via email A: The medical drama starring Augustus Prew and Dermot Mulroney was given a 13-episode order for the 2016-17 season. The series focused on a billionaire (Prew) who dreams of
Daveed Diggs building a hospital with ultimate cutting-edge technology to treat rare and incurable diseases. He partners with maverick surgeon Dr. Walter Wallace (Mulroney), who leads the effort in clearing out the bureaucracy of medicine to focus on forward thinking, advancing technology and saving lives — at no cost to the patient. While this sounds like a wonderful premise for
a medical series — and for exploring in real life — after airing all 13 commissioned episodes, CBS decided not to renew the order in the wake of mixed reviews and low ratings. Q: Can you tell me what Daniel Radcliffe is up to lately? — Gal P., Columbus, Ohio A: Daniel is making a foray into the world of comedy, starring with Owen Wilson in the Lorne Michaels-produced TBS comedy “Miracle Workers,” a workplace comedy set in heaven. While we’re on the subject, let me tell you about other new shows for this upcoming television season on TBS. “Close Enough” is a brand-new animated series from “Regular Show” creator J.G. Quintel; there will be an update of the classic game
Oscar- and Emmy-winner Michael Moore, and “Who Run the World?” from Sarah Jessica Parker, Morgan Spurlock and Refinery29. TNT also is working with master storyteller and filmmaker Ridley Scott to develop a night of original science-fiction programming. Initial plans call for the block to serve as a showcase for hourlong series, short-form programs and other formats to be developed in collaboration with Ridley. The network ordered
show “The Joker’s Wild,” hosted by Snoop Dogg; and we’ll get a new, as-yetuntitled series from the comedy trio The Dress Up Gang. TBS also has added Cedric the Entertainer, Taylor Mosby and Dante Hoagland to the cast of its new Tracy Morgan-starring comedy “The Last O.G.” READERS: TNT recently announced its slate of new programming, and I wanted to share with you all. First up are two new nonfiction series: “Michael Moore Live from the Apocalypse” from

Did you know? According to the Pew Research Center, Christians were the largest religious group in the world in 2015. In the 2017 report, “The Changing Global Religious Landscape,” the Pew Research Center states that there are roughly 2.3 billion Christians in the world. That figure translates to slightly more than 31 percent of the world’s population. Muslims (1.8 billion) make up the world’s second largest religious group in 2015, accounting for nearly one-quarter of the world’s
overall population of 7.3 billion. Pew researchers project that Muslims will be the fastest-growing major religious group between 2015 and 2060, followed by Christians, Hindus and Jews, respectively. That might be because so many subscribers to the Muslim faith are young. In fact, Muslims have the youngest median age (24) of any of the world’s major religions, meaning many Muslims have their childbearing years ahead of them. The median age for

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Information you need might be coming in sporadically, but at least what you’re getting is valuable. Continue to wait until more is available before acting on that career move. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You continue on an upbeat cycle, and with that strong Taurean energy you should see favorable results from your hard work. A pleasant surprise awaits you in your private life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs more time to be worked out. Don’t give up on it just yet. Remain open to providing explanations, if called for. Another friend offers good advice. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Fast action can correct a seemingly minor problem that has taken on some unexpectedly difficult aspects. Stay with it until it’s resolved. News on a more positive note is due soon. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some snags could cause delays in those plans you’re eager to see put into operation. But be patient. The Clever Cat will soon have good reason to celebrate a job well done. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to let that Virgan sensitivity dissuade you from
being the hardheaded realist you should be at this time. Your goals are in sight. Stay focused on them. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A more positive aspect opens up, allowing you to make some important changes in a personal situation. Remember to seek balance and avoid extremes as you proceed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good week to get out and enjoy the fine times you missed while you were so deep in those workaday projects. Be sure to share
it with that special person. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Work and play are in balance this week. However, expect news that could tip things toward the workplace for quite a while. But all to a good end. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) You’re more productive on the job than you have been in some time. That’s good. But be careful not to overlook some situations developing in your private life. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ve been doing a lot for others (as usual). But now it’s time to focus on your needs, including finally going on that long-delayed trip you’ve been hoping to make. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s all smoothly
going on ‘twixt you and that very special person in your life. But a colleague causes some disruption on
the job that you might be called on to help settle. BORN THIS WEEK: You are sensitive to the
needs of others. But you’re no pushover. You would make a fine teacher, psychologist or minister.

Daniel Craig HOLLYWOOD — Will Daniel Craig play 007 for a fifth time? He made 21 films prior to “Casino Royale” (2006), but none of them could touch the success of his Bond debut. “Casino Royale” gave him a $3.4 million paycheck, cost $150 million and grossed $600 million. “Quantum of Solace” (2008) earned him $8.9 million, cost $200 million and grossed $586 million. “Skyfall” (2012) made him $17 million and earned $1.1 billion, and “Spectre,” which paid him $39 million and grossed $880 million. Craig’s net worth has been estimated at $95 million, and producers are offering a hefty increase for him to do his fifth “Bond” film. Can he really walk away from that kind of money and prestige? His next two films (which we’re sure won’t have a quarter of the windfall of “Skyfall”) are
• “When packing for the kids to go to camp, here’s a tip we’ve used over and over again: Put all elements of each outfit (top, bottom, undergarments, socks, etc.) folded into a gallon-size zipper-close bag. I add a plastic grocery bag as well. Each day, the child puts on a fresh outfit, then puts yesterday’s clothes into the plastic grocery bag. You can tell what’s been worn, and it’s all ready at the start of day — no looking for socks or underwear!” — M.H. in North Carolina • Keep your car’s back seat clean with a sheet. Drape a twin-size sheet over the back seat. Tuck in all around. Use scissors to make a small opening for the seat belts. Now dirt and crumbs will be contained in the sheet, and you can shake it off when you get to your destination or home! Works great for road trips and beach days. • When Mom or Dad travels for work, it can be hard on the parent and kids staying home. Try this trick: Record yourself reading a story. The child can play the recording as
“Lucky Logan,” due Aug. 18, with Channing Tatum, Riley Keough (Elvis’ granddaughter), two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank, Seth MacFarlane and Katie Holmes; and the romantic “Kings,” opposite Oscar-winner Halle Berry. Roger Moore, who passed away May 23, starred in seven Bond films from 1973-85, once told me, “I kept telling them I was too old to keep playing 007, but they kept saying, ‘We’ll be the judge of that.’ Finally, at 60, I said it’s time for a new 007!” Moore was an amazing Bond, but his own personality was suave and charming because of his sense of humor. Prediction: Craig will not only do a fifth “Bond” film, but probably a sixth or seventh, just to tie Moore’s record. Now that “The Mummy” is hitting screens, Tom Cruise has announced that the next film on his list will be “Top Gun 2,” the sequel to “Top Gun,” which cost just $15 million to make in 1986 and grossed $357 million. Val Kilmer (Iceman) is the only original cast member returning. The screenplay is in the hands of Peter Craig (“Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & 2), Justin Marks (the upcoming “Jungle Book 2”), and Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (they wrote the sequel to “Big Trouble in Little China” for Dwayne Johnson). Maverick and Iceman 31 years later; they have their work cut out for them! Two-time Oscarhe or she follows the story in the book. Or, make a video for younger kids. • Need a quick travel cup or kids’ sippy cup? Use a plastic cup, then cover it with a square of plastic wrap secured with a rubber band. Finally, insert a straw through the plastic. There you go!

A dessert to please soul food devotees nutmeg •1⁄8 teaspoon ground allspice •1⁄2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted •1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Soul food is beloved by many people across the globe. While certain main dishes garner the bulk of that love, soul food desserts, such as the following recipe for “Miss Ruthie’s Old-Fashioned Peach Cobbler” from Patty Pinner’s “Sweets: Soul Food Desserts & Memories” (Ten Speed Press) can complete a meal and keep friends and family coming back for more.
•1 unbaked double pie crust (see below) •8 cups peeled and sliced fresh peaches •2 cups granulated sugar •1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour •1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1⁄2 teaspoon ground

Try baked wings Sporting events provide great opportunities to gather with friends and family and enjoy some time together while watching a favorite sport or big game. Such gatherings are not complete without food, and some foods are widely considered staples of gameday get-togethers. Chicken wings are among the most popular gameday foods. While many chicken wing afficionados might insist on frying wings, this beloved dish can be baked. In fact, Chef Kevin Gillespie, author of “Fire In My Belly” (Andrews McMeel), felt like he could create a baked chicken wing dish that even the most ardent wing connoisseur could not resist. The result is the following recipe for “Baked Hot Wings,” which home cooks can whip up in time for this year’s big game.

Baked Hot Wings Makes 2 full servings •24 chicken wings, a mix of drums and flats, about 2 pounds •1 tablespoon grapeseed oil •1⁄3 cup sriracha chile sauce •1⁄4 cup malt vinegar •1⁄4 cup soy sauce •2 tablespoons sugar •2 cloves garlic, very thinly sliced •1⁄4 cup scallions, thinly sliced on the diagonal F.
and, using tongs, flip the wings over. Continue baking until the wings are cooked through and the juices run clear, another 10 minutes. Combine the sriracha, vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, and garlic in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, then cut the heat down to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour the sauce into a large bowl and toss in 1 tablespoon of the scallions. Carefully remove the skillet from the oven and, using tongs, transfer the wings to the bowl and toss with the sauce. Transfer to a platter and garnish with the remaining 3 tablespoons scallions.

in a 4-quart Dutch oven. Allow the mixture to sit until the dry ingredients are dissolved and a syrup forms, about 15 minutes. Bring the peach mixture to a boil over medium heat. Decrease the heat to low and cook until the peaches are tender, about 10 minutes. Remove the mixture from the heat and add the butter. Roll out half of the pie pastry, then cut it into an 8-inch square. Spoon half of the peach mixture into the prepared dish. Cover the mixture with the pastry square. Bake 12 to 14 minutes, or until lightly browned. Take the dish out of the oven and spoon the remaining peach mixture over the baked pastry. Roll out the remaining pastry, then cut it into strips about

of peas. Add the egg and mix well. Add the milk 1 tablespoon at a time. Don’t be afraid to add more milk if necessary to achieve a dough that’s wet enough to form into a ball. Being careful not to overwork the dough, form the dough into a ball with your hands. Wrap the ball in plastic, then chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Transfer the dough from the refrigerator to a lightly floured surface. Flatten the ball slightly and dust the top of it with flour before rolling it out with a rolling pin. Divide the dough into two portions before rolling. Begin rolling at the center of the dough and work outward. Roll the dough out into a circle about 4 inches wider than the pie pan it will be placed in.

Understanding protein powder shakes Protein powder shakes once were consumed almost exclusively by professional body builders or gym rats looking to increase their muscle mass. But long gone are the days of finding protein shake supplies in specialty fitness stores. Nowadays protein shakes are mainstream and big business for the fitness and diet industry. Although protein shakes are not a magic solution for six-pack abs or overnight weight loss, they can — when used correctly — make a healthy addition to a fitness and nutrition regimen. With that said, they may not be right for everyone. But it’s
important for individuals to weigh the pros and cons of protein products and work with their physicians to find the right regimen for their age, gender, body type, and desired goals. Protein shakes have a lot of positive attributes. Convenient and portable, protein shakes are formulated with readily available, highly digestible protein to fuel the body postworkout. Protein is essential for building muscle and overall body strength and is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. It also helps make hormones, enzymes and other body chemicals. Protein shakes deliver
whey or casein protein in a convenient way. And because protein shakes tend to be concentrated, many people can consume the recommended level of protein for their activity type without having to eat many calorieladen meals. Shakes also can be filling and help people feel satiated longer. Some people substitute protein shakes for meals once per day, eliminating a potentially calorie-laden meal in favor of a low-calorie shake. While protein shakes can be beneficial, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends that those who exer-
cise should try to reach their protein requirements via whole foods. Protein shakes are not complete meals; therefore, they may create nutritional deficits if they are routinely used as meal substitutes. The Mayo Clinic offers that protein shakes often fall short of supplying significant amounts of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. They’re also generally missing naturally occurring fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Protein shakes may be flavored with artificial ingredients or sweeteners which can be fine when consumed occasionally, but may not be recommended as a
long-term meal replacement. Too much protein may not be a good thing, either. The U.S. Department of Health recommends that adults should not consume more than twice the recommended daily intake of protein, which is 55.5 g for men and 45 g for women. Protein shakes often have 20 to 40 g of protein per serving. So it’s easy to see how consumers of protein shakes may consume more than their recommended amount of protein. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, consistently exceeding daily protein require-
ments can lead to weight gain, high blood cholesterol, an elevated risk for heart disease, and kidney complications. Also, The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states that consuming too much protein can raise a person’s risk of developing cancer, osteoporosis and kidney stones. Protein shakes are convenient forms of a nutrient that active bodies need. When used in moderation and as part of an overall healthy eating plan, they should be safe. But it’s important to discuss any dietary and exercise concerns with a doctor before making drastic lifestyle changes.
A traditional take on a beloved dish Hispanic cuisine is beloved the world over, and much of that infatuation can be traced to Mexico. Mexican cuisine is flavorful and can be enjoyed any time of year. But even ardent Mexican cuisine enthusiasts may never have tried authentic Mexican food. Many Mexican restaurants outside of Mexico offer only a hybrid form of this beloved cuisine that, while delicious, does not reflect traditional Mexican recipes. For those who want a taste of something more authentic, consider the following recipe for “Classic Rolled Tacos” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).
CLASSIC ROLLED TACOS Makes 24 tacos •2 cups shredded cooked beef (see below) •3⁄4 teaspoon salt •24 6-inch corn tortillas, micro-warmed (see note) •Vegetable oil In a large bowl, thoroughly combine shredded beef and salt. To build tacos, place 1-1⁄2 tablespoons of meat at one end of each tortilla, shaping the filling into a short, straight line. Gently roll tortilla and secure with a toothpick (you do not need to seal the ends; the taco looks like a small flute). Deep-fry immediately or place rolled tacos in a resealable plastic bag to keep moist. Refrigerate until ready to cook for up

Lake Of The Prairies 61.5 sq. km.

ake of the Prairies is a large, long lake situated in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Originally, the lake was created as a water storage lake to manage the risk of flooding elsewhere. A great fishery has been an added bonus. Lake of the Prairies supports a high quality walleye fishery. In fact, Lake of the Prairies is now considered the second largest fishery in Manitoba, and one of the best walleye fisheries in Canada. Along with boat fishing, there are options for shore fishing as well. Calvin Daniels, from Yorkton This Week, says that many of the shore fishing options are located at lodges and resorts, though he has had some success fishing from the Roblin Bridge. Both the ice fishery and the open water season are very popular, and there are two annual derbies on the lake. During the summer, take advantage of the Russell Lions Prairie Classic, June 10 and 11, 2017. In the winter, the Assessippi Parkland Tourism puts on an ice fishing derby each February. Ice fishing for perch is very popular among experts and beginners alike. Perch can be caught in fairly shallow water with simple jigging techniques.Sometimes, the bigger perch will be down deeper, but not always. Carp are also present in Lake of the Prairies, though they tend to feed less in the winter, which can be challenging for ice anglers. If carp are what you’re after, try fishing in warmer water. Typically, they will be more active in warm water. Much like bass, they can be easier to catch when the water is warm.

“Who helps turn the strawberry blossoms into berries?” Rhonda Hayes asks 5-year-old Isla as she sees her skipping across the narrow driveways separating their urban homes. “Bees!” she answers, and I think that’s a queen bee over there,” she adds, pointing to hedge of wild pink roses. “She knows how it all works,” says Rhonda with a smile. “Bee watching is the new bird watching!” No matter one’s age, Rhonda isn’t shy about sharing her knowledge about the birds and bees. And for those of us on a learning curve, her book “Pollinator Friendly Gardening” is an inspiring guide intended to assist all of us interested in doing our part to grow healthy gardens for pollinators. Let’s get started! To grow your family’s knowledge of pollinator gardening and to celebrate National Pollinator Week (June 19-25), here are some of Rhonda’s easy and creative activities you can enjoy this summer. —Start seeds outside this time of year for “cheap and cheerful” annuals that pollinators love, such as zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, poppies and nasturtiums. All it takes is a few packets of seed, healthy soil and a bit of diligence. They’re super-easy to grow,
and before you know it, they’ll be covered with bees and butterflies. —Put out a hummingbird feeder. Nearby, plant a few flowers with trumpet shape blooms, preferably red. You’ll get lots of visits. Hummingbirds use the sugar water for energy to fly, but they eat spiders and insects for protein. —Help to cure “plant blindness,” a condition that affects mainly kids (but adults, too). Kids can name lots of animals, but sometimes as few as five local plants. Often people just think of plants as green blobs in the background of nature. To learn more about what’s growing, go on a plant safari around the neighborhood or a botanical garden and learn to identify common plants; talk about plant/ pollinator partnerships like monarch butterflies and milkweed. —The next time you are at the grocery store or farmer’s market together, see how many fruits and vegetables are there thanks to bees — apples,
cherries, avocados, cucumbers, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, lemons, limes and even onions, carrots and celery! For more familyfriendly information: “Pollinator Friendly Gardening: Gardening for Bees, Butterflies, and other Pollinators” by Rhonda Fleming Hayes (Voyageur Press). Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.

I was born on May 13, and sometimes I remember to actually look at the part of the newspaper that tells you who was born or what significant event occurred on that same day. Turns out, it was a pretty significant day. Formula One started on that day in 1950. Stevie Wonder, the world’s blindest basketball-game-attending fan, was born on that day. Other things occurred: In 1917, three kids said they received a visit from the apparition of Jesus’ mom at Fatima, Portugal. In 1940, it was the day Germany conquered France (I know, I know ... that could have happened any day, but it just so happened). Also, it was the day that Bobby Riggs — a washed-up, 55-year-old tennis-playing hustler — destroyed Margaret Court in straight sets (emphasis
soon will become clear), 6-2, 6-1. At the time, this was a big deal. Court was the No. 1-ranked woman’s player in the world. Her loss did absolutely nothing to advance women’s rights. This was a time when women athletes barely had running water in their locker rooms, let alone anything approaching equal tournament pay. The fact that Court curtseyed to Riggs before the match made the loss even more cringe-worthy to women players like Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The record shows that Court won 24 grand slam singles titles. (A “grand slam” means you won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in a single calendar year.) This is kind of a big deal. Players like Evert and Navratilova won 18. Steffi Graf had 22; Serena Williams has 23 of them. The International Tennis Hall of Fame plaque for Court says that “for sheer strength of performance and accomplishment there

has never been a tennis player to match her.” The Melbourne Herald Sun called her the greatest female tennis player of all time. And then last week, we learned that Margaret Court, who played in the 1960s and ‘70s, makes no sense in today’s world. Look around your town. Chances are, many of you haven’t a clue as to why your town has its name, particularly if it ends in “ville” or “burg.” Bet many of you live on a street or drive named after a person you haven’t the slightest inkling about. But that’s really how the majority of people in the world will leave a legacy, they will get something or someplace named after them after a vote by the local city council. Very few people leave lasting impres-
sions on the world without getting either assassinated or blown up to epic proportions (I’m looking at you, Johnny Appleseed). Think of Carnegie Hall. Or Cermak Boulevard. Wrigley Field. The problem tennis has is that the Australian Open named an arena after Court, and Court has turned out to be a pretty terrible person. I won’t dignify Court by repeating what she said about the lesbian community, but I’ll make a psychic prediction: There’ll be an arena looking for a new name in Australia in the next few days. Sorry, Margaret ... we’re going forward, not backward. You are NOT the greatest female tennis player of all time. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Did you know? Studies have shown that music can have a beneficial impact on both mental and physical health. In a meta-analysis of 400 studies, researchers at McGill University in Montreal found that music can reduce stress and boost the immune system. That’s because listening to music increases the body’s production of immunoglobin A, an antibody that plays an critical role in the function of the immune system and cells that attack viruses. A 2013 study even found that music can help children during visits to the emergency room. Researchers at the University of Alberta studied 42 children between the ages of 3 and 11, discovering that those who listened to relaxing music while having an IV inserted reported less pain than children who did not lis-
ten to music. In addition, children who listened to music during the adminstration of the IV exhibited less anguish than the children who did not listen to music. Healthcare workers even noted the ease of administering IVs to children who were listening to music compared to patients who were not listening to music.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: It never seems to end, despite all the publicservice announcements: People still leave their pets locked in their cars on hot summer days. I just spent an hour in front of the supermarket, with my groceries melting in my own car, making a report to a police officer who had to break someone’s car window to get in and rescue two dogs panting inside. The windows weren’t even cracked, and the sun was beginning to get hot. This is Georgia in early summer, and the heat is merciless. I locked up my groceries and went looking for the owner first. I had the store page its customers, and I went into each of the small stores of the shopping center and asked if the owner was there. No response, so I called the police. It’s amazing how fast the owner appeared after the police officer, who couldn’t unlock the door using a tool, smashed in the passenger side window. The owner was pretty mad at me, but I gave him his chance. He was even madder when he got a citation. But I don’t care, even if the ice cream in my car did melt. It’s worth it to know that those dogs weren’t injured. — Doreen A., Marietta, Georgia DEAR DOREEN: I’m so glad those dogs weren’t hurt! Your story is a great example of what to do if you notice pets in a locked car. It also IS OK to call the police first so that the door can be opened faster; you can enlist others to search for the owners while waiting for the police. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

How to manage body pain as you age
(NC) — Our bodies change as we age. And as much as we’d like to steer clear of long-lasting muscle, joint, back and arthritis pain, we may be unable to dodge these symptoms as time marches on. So why does this happen? With age, muscle fibres shrink and weaken, which can contribute to fatigue and limit physical activity. At the same time, joints may stiffen and lose flexibility, resulting in pain, inflammation and, in some cases, arthritis. Long-lasting body pain may be more common as we get older, but it shouldn’t stop us from enjoying life and accomplishing all we want to. Research has found that a combination of treatment methods, including physiotherapy, massage therapy and medications, show the best results when managing body pain. “When we leave our 30s and enter our 40s and 50s, pain can become a regular part of life. Some of my patients complain that they have to rely on taking multiple doses of pain relievers in a day to cope, says Dr. Jeff Habert. “Advil 12 Hour offers an option where just one pill keeps working for up to 12 hours. If you’re looking for an additional way to help get some relief, try applying icepacks to reduce inflammation and ease pain, or a warm bath to relieve aching muscles. As always, consult your health care provider with any health concerns.

It’s time to get outside, enjoy the sun and infuse your food with fire and smoke. It’s also time to move the meat over to the side and make room for more fruits and vegetables on the grill. Why not try zucchini, eggplant, asparagus or mushrooms as the “center of the plate,” and create a delicious dessert using grilled fruits? Grilling provides an opportunity to prepare healthy fruits and vegetables in a different way. Many people think everything tastes better on the grill, which also can hold true for fruits and vegetables. Taste is not the only benefit of preparing plant-based meals this way. Vegetables and fruit cook so quickly on the grill that they retain much of their vitamin and nutrient content. I have a new American Muscle Grill, and it’s perfect for any type of grilling, barbecuing or outdoor cooking thanks to the dual gas or propane feature. The technology behind the AMG is ultramodern, and your vegetables, fruits, meats, seafoods and breads will be smoked, roasted or seared with its infrared feature to delicious perfection. The reversible V-Tech grates provide added control
over heat-transfer and hot and cool cooking zones. Experiment with different spices, marinades and sauces when preparing fruits and vegetables on the grill. Try this flavorful recipe for MoroccanStyle Grilled Vegetables at your next family or holiday gathering. It serves four to six people. MOROCCAN-STYLE GRILLED VEGETABLES •12 crimini or button mushrooms, stems removed •3 small globe or purple eggplants, sliced into rounds, cut lengthwise into quarters, and then into slices about 1/2-inch thick •1 zucchini, cut into 1-inch thick rounds •1 yellow squash, cut into 1-inch thick rounds •1/2 large red bell pepper, seeded, cut into chunks •3 fresh pineapple, 1-inch thick rings, cut into quarters •12 asparagus, cut into 3-inch lengths •1/4 small red onion, halved, pieces separated •8 cherry or grape tomatoes Moroccan-Style Marinade: •1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley •3 tablespoons olive oil
•1 tablespoon garlic, chopped •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1 teaspoon paprika •1/2 teaspoon ground cumin •1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/4 teaspoon ground ginger •1/4 teaspoon cayenne •1/4 teaspoon turmeric •Juice of 1 lemon •Cooking oil spray
Lightly coat both sides of the vegetables with nonstick spray. Using long-handled tongs, moisten a paper towel with cooking oil spray. Lightly coat the grill rack with the oil-soaked paper towel to prevent sticking. Lay skewers on the grate with the vegetables over the hot side, and the foil-covered handles outside of the grill.
Grill vegetables, covered, over medium heat until vegetables are cooked and lightly charred, about 4 minutes. Turn, baste with any remaining marinade, and grill 4 to 5 minutes more or until vegetables are tender, turning frequently. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6 (3 to 4 skewers per person). THE KITCHEN
Heat grill to mediumhigh; spray grates with nonstick spray. If using a gas grill, turn off one side; on an American Muscle Grill, fill three trays with charcoal and the rest with wood chips. On a conventional charcoal grill, push the coals to one side and replace the grate. Soak (16 to 18) 12-inch wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes, or use metal skewers, if desired. To make the marinade: Using a large bowl, mix together the parsley, oil, garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and the lemon juice. Mix well to combine. Add the vegetables and fruit to the marinade in the bowl; or use a large re-sealable bag, pour in the marinade and add the fruit and vegetables. Mix well to coat all the ingredients. Let ingredients marinade at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour before skewering. Thread vegetables and pineapple onto soaked skewers. Wrap the ends of the wooden skewers with foil to prevent burning.
