DEAR DR. ROACH: I read recently that if Valium is taken by older folks for more than 90 days, it ups their risk for Alzheimer’s disease by 32 percent and if taken for more than 180 days, the risk goes up 84 percent. Have you heard anything like this? What is safe for seniors, or anyone, to take for anxiety? — C.P. ANSWER: A study published recently ago in BMJ, a prestigious medical journal, showed a clear association between benzodiazepines — a class of medications that includes
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Sheila threatened the hotel manager after he asked her to pay her overdue bill. Justin reported to Bill that Spectra’s headquarters was destroyed by a fire. Eric didn’t believe Quinn’s version of what happened with Sheila. Liam and Bill argued over Bill’s justification for his actions. Steffy told Ridge that Liam didn’t believe the fire at Spectra wasn’t accidental. Ridge arrived at Eric’s and became the voice of reason between Eric and Quinn. The Spectra gang huddled around Sally waiting for an update on her prognosis. Liam and Steffy debated on whether they should go to the police with the information they had on Bill. Thomas returned from New York to visit an ailing Sally in the hospital. Wait to See: A once-forbidden couple become pawns in an elaborate scheme.
diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan), among many others — and Alzheimer’s disease. The association was stronger for long-term use than for short, as you correctly point out. Further, the risk was higher for long-acting drugs (like Valium or Librium) than for short (like Xanax). However, the type of study done cannot claim that taking the medication caused the increased risk of Alzheimer’s. The authors themselves point out that it is possible that early Alzheimer’s disease causes anxiety that is subsequently treated with prescription antianxiety medications, and that there is no causal relationship. It is also possible to see this result from chance, although the authors found less than 0.1 percent likelihood this result is due to chance
Drake Hogestyn stars as “John” on “Days of Our Lives” DAYS OF OUR LIVES Chad and Abigail, and Sonny and Paul planned a double wedding. John and Marlena tried to find a way out of a predicament. Andre asked for “Marlena’s” help, not knowing that Hattie had assumed her identity. Lucas turned to Chloe after getting a horrible shock. John and Marlena developed an escape plan. Nicole received some alarming news at her custody hearing for Holly. Rafe and Hope put pressure on Myron. Brady played dirty on Nicole’s behalf. Kayla opened up to Valerie about her issues with Steve. JJ and Lani took time out for a little
alone. Finally, it’s possible that there is both a direct, causal link between taking benzodiazepine drugs and developing Alzheimer’s disease and that early Alzheimer’s causes some people enough anxiety that they are prescribed these anti-anxiety medications. That implies that the risk is less than the numbers from the study. A different study design may reveal the truth. There are many good reasons not to use benzodiazepine medications, and I never prescribe them for long-term use. Increased risk of both falls and automobile collisions are two that most concern me. (Multiple studies have confirmed this risk, so it is likely that these drugs do cause some people to fall and to have auto accidents.) These are also potentially habit-forming medications, and sometimes it becomes very diffi-
cult to sleep without them once they are started. Because all medications have some risk, I recommend nondrug strategies for anxiety reduction. Meditation, mindfulness and imaging exercises, yoga and even regular exercise all have been shown to reduce anxiety without medication. Counseling and cognitivebehavioral therapies also are effective. If medications are needed, then SSRI medications such as sertraline (Zoloft) have lower risks than benzodiazepines. Just a cup of hot chamomile tea might help you get through stressful times. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has heart disease. He’s tried every statin drug to lower his cholesterol. He cannot tolerate any of them. The muscle pain and weakness caused by these drugs is severe. His cholesterol remains high, even

Nelle fell under another’s suspicion. Carly refused to rush to judgment. Sam and Liz began to bond. Michael reassured Nelle. Alexis admitted her true feelings. Anna and Finn sought answers from Raymond. Nina defended Valentin. Sam was upset by Franco’s arrival. Wait to See: Amy has bad news for Nathan.

Sask. breaks peak power use record we’re seeing it in these new summer peaks.” said SaskPower Vice President of Transmission and Industrial Services Kory Hayko. “More people and businesses are requesting new service and each household is using more power every year as they adopt new technology. We’re also seeing the summer peak climb higher towards our winter peak, and that’s why SaskPower needs to update the grid and keep growing along with the province.” SaskPower will invest approximately $1 billion in infrastructure projects this
year across the province. Infrastructure projects over the next 13 years will also include the doubling of the province’s power capacity that comes from renewable sources. Notably, SaskPower is currently running competitions for solar and wind power projects, and has recently signed power purchase agreements for geothermal and landfill-waste heat electricity. Cooling and heating represents approximately a quarter of residential power bills. To reduce consump-

per cent of field peas, 42 per cent of mustard, 32 per cent of durum, 26 per cent of barley, 21 per cent of triticale, 14 per cent of spring wheat and 10 per cent of canola have now been combined. Eighteen per cent of soybeans, seven per cent of oats and chickpeas, two per cent of canary seed and one per cent of flax have been combined. Thirty-nine per cent of canola and 25 per cent of spring wheat and mustard are swathed or ready to straight-cut. The majority of the province received little to no rainfall this past week; the highest rainfall for the week (10 mm) was reported in the Rama area. The Pierceland area still holds record for the most rainfall in the province since April 1 at 543 mm. With the warm temperatures and lack of rainfall this past week, topsoil moisture conditions continue to deteriorate. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as one per cent surplus, 26 per cent adequate, 44 per cent short and 29 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 20 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and 42 per cent very short. The majority of crop damage this past week is
attributed to lack of moisture, insects and strong winds. Producers continue to scout for insects such as bertha armyworm in canola. Producers are busy combining, desiccating crops and hauling bales and grain. SaskPower received seven reports of farm machinery coming into contact with power equipment last week, bringing the total in August to 19. SaskPower reminds producers to be aware of their surroundings at all times. More safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/safety. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Baywatch” (R) — Beach legend Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) heads an elite group of lifeguards protecting the beachgoers of Emerald Bay, Florida. Along with his secondin-command, C.J. Parker (Kelly Rohrbach), and a few new recruits — Matt Brody, a disgraced twotime Olympic swimmer (played by an extremely buffed-up Zac Efron) and Summer Quinn (Alexandra Daddario) — Mitch leads his squad’s pursuit of a drug-trafficking new neighbor, Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra), whose plans threaten their sandy paradise. While you certainly won’t drown in the depths of the storyline, it is hilarious and ribald with plenty of shallow humor, all in good fun and teeming with slow-motion running sequences. “Dean” (PG-13) — Dean is an artist whose pen and Bristol board drawings illustrate his life and relationships. His mother has recently passed away, and turbulence begins as his father, Robert (Kevin Kline), decides it’s time to sell the family home. Demitri Martin writes, directs and stars in this story as simple as Dean’s drawings. As Dean meanders through friendship, courtship and kinship, we discover that life is not always black and white, nor can love be expressed

Dwayne Johnson in “Baywatch” as freely as a felt-tip pen on paper. Gillian Jacobs and Mary Steenburgen also star. “Born in China” (G) — The wilds of China come alive in the latest documentary venture by Disneynature. Director Lu Chuan takes us up close and personal with animal families on this breathtaking and ancient continent. Meet Mei Mei, an outright adorable baby panda, and her mother, Ya Ya. Spend some time getting to know Teo Tao, a golden snub nose monkey with joyful antics and killer jumping skills. Run alongside Dawa, a lovely snow leopard. And the chiru! This film was a collaboration between Disneynature and Shanghai Media Group, and the scenery is inescapably beautiful. This is no dry and dusty nature film; the touching personalities of these animals shine through, assisted by the narration of John Krasinski (Jim, “The Office”). “A Family Man” (R) — Dane Jensen (Gerard
Butler) is a self-proclaimed headhunter, certain of his importance and full of confidence. His recruitment firm is a harddriving boiler room, the kind in which a boss (here, played by Willem Dafoe) deliberately creates a competitive atmosphere by pitting rival against rival (Alison Brie) for a promotion to general manager. Just when his success seems a lock, his personal life comes crashing down. His young son is diagnosed with a terrifying illness, causing him to re-evaluate what once seemed important and redefine what the parameters of success truly are. “ Why do I hear but not understand? ” If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. rently touring. Chase’s current passion project is “Cypress Bayou,” which is being shopped around to various networks. Chase compares the series to “’True Blood’ mixed with ‘True Detective’ mixed with ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ Maybe even a tad ‘Game of Thrones’ because it’s very character-driven — there are lots of different families and houses in this
small town.” Chase can’t wait to get this series to the masses, and I can’t blame him after he told me what it’s about: “I play the leader of the garou, which are werewolves. My family’s been cursed to where we would become creatures on the full moon and terrorize the town. But then this family of good witches took pity upon us, and while you can’t cure the curse, you can tweak it. Once we were able to control our shifting, we became protectors of the town.” Follow the series on Facebook (facebook.com/ cypressbayou) and Twitter (twitter.com/cbayoufandom), and let the socialmedia world know that you want to see a network pick up this series STAT. Q: Do you have any news about “The X-Files”? — Marc V. in Georgia A: This season will have 10 episodes (four more than last season’s six), eight of which will be

Cover grill and cook 10 to 12 minutes longer for medium rare or until desired doneness, turning over once. Transfer steaks to platter; let stand 10 minutes. Slice steaks on cutting board to serve. Steak Secrets Steaks that are at least 3/4-inch to 1-inch thick won’t dry out easily during grilling. Trim off excess fat and slash the fat edges at 1-inch intervals to prevent curling. Turn your steak with tongs once, halfway through cooking. (Don’t use a fork — it will pierce the meat and let the natural juices escape.) Many factors can influence cooking time — including the weather, especially wind, when you’re using charcoal — so test for doneness by cutting into the thickest part of the steak and checking its color. By Cindy Elavsky Q: I love the actor who played Oliver on “The Originals” and was sad when his character died. Can you tell me what he’s been up to lately? — Margie F., via email A: Chase Coleman’s character might be dead, but his career is very much alive — and churning full speed ahead. Since ending his tenure on the hit supernatural CW series, Chase has worked on a number of projects, including the David Duchovny series “Aquarius” and tons of shorts, movies and miniseries. Those of you who’ve attended an “Originals” fan convention will know that Chase is a talented musician, and he and his band Mercy Mode are cur-

stand-alone supernatural mysteries for Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to solve. I’ve also learned that the characters of Agents Einstein and Miller will be back (which I am not thrilled about). Fox entertainment chairman David Madden revealed: “You’ll be launched into a very urgent adventure that has a lot to do with William — Mulder and Scully’s kid — so the search for William will be a significant thread through the show. You will see the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis). You may see the Lone Gunmen somewhere along the line. There will be other characters from the previous mythology who will be reprised.” Q: Will Amazon’s “Bosch” return for a fourth season? — Ray C., Kissimmee, Fla. A: “Bosch” will indeed return for a fourth season, and while an exact date had not been given as of this writing, it most likely will be spring 2018. In the meantime, you can stream seasons one through three on Amazon Prime if you need a refresher, or if you

HOLLYWOOD — Lady Gaga’s name won’t be on the screen when the reboot of “A Star Is Born” opens. The film, directed and starring Bradley Cooper, has a leading lady named Stefani Germanotta! If you’re a die-hard Gaga fan, you already know that Stefani Germanotta is her real name. Even though she proved she’s an excellent actress in “American Horror Story: Hotel,” she was billed as Lady Gaga, but this film will make her a legitimate actress and an even bigger star. Produced by Cooper, Clint Eastwood and Jon Peters, among others, the film
Blow up a balloon, blow your nose and we hope the pitcher doesn’t blow the save in tonight’s baseball game. If it’s your birthday, blow out all the candles on your cake to make the wishes, blow in the wind ... It’s fun to play a mind game with kids using a fun word like “blow” that has so many meanings. Challenged? Keep it going and think of blowing a melody on a clarinet, and why not blow over the rim of long-neck bottles filled with varying amounts of water to make more music? Never done it? Just

Glass bottles work best. —Pitcher of water —Food coloring (optional) Here’s the fun: Line up the empty bottles horizontally on a table or bench in front of you. Pour different amounts of water into each one, starting with a small quantity in the first and gradually increasing the level. “Tune” the bottles by blowing into them and emptying or adding water to achieve the desired pitch. To make a resonant sound, lightly blow across the mouth of the partially filled bottle. Keep practicing until the right sound is achieved. For a full octave on the musical scale, use eight bottles. You’ll discover that less water in the bottle creates a lower pitch, and more

Fox TV is following last year’s “Grease Live” with the musical version of the perennial holiday film “The Christmas Story” (1983), which starred Darren McGavin and Peter Billingsley. The first star signed is “SNL” alumn Maya Rudolf, who will play the Melinda Dillon role as Ralphie Parker’s mother. It airs Dec. 17. Judge Judy (Sheindlin), 74, who already earns $47 million a year, will add another $200 million to her $290 million net worth after selling her vast “Judge Judy” library water gives you a higher pitch. If it’s a hot day and your kids are thirsty, they might think it’s fun to drink from the bottles to cool off as they tune. When the bottles are at the desired pitch, add a drop of food coloring to each one to identify the “notes” by color. Make up a tune, or try a simple familiar song such as “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” You’ll need only four bottles to play the childhood tune. Get four people (one for each note/ bottle) and one conductor, and let the music begin! Note: If your child has difficulty making sounds by blowing over the rims of the bottles, hand him a wooden spoon and lightly tap on the bottles below the water line to create sounds. Two-time Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman, who took time off from acting in 2012 to direct “Quartet,” with Maggie Smith and Tom Courtney, will join Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and Candice Bergen in “The Meyerowitz Stories,” dis-
tributed by Netflix. Since it was well-received at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Netflix probably will show it in theaters before releasing the film to its online streaming service. stadiums for our amusement. You know ... a real role model. I’m thinking about this as I watch the folks who filled the Southern Illinois Saluki’s stadium, with every person rooting for the same thing — the complete blotting out of the Sun from our skies. It shows us our place in the universe. Well, guess what? Evel was universally beloved, or at least looked upon with a high level of bemusement. The guy would, for little or no apparent reason, jump his motorcycle over long lines of cars and through hoops of fire. He was a true “daredevil” in every sense of the word. Sometimes he would complete the jump, and people would applaud. Most other times,
he would crash in spectacular fashion and the crowd would go completely berserk. He is the guy that invented the term “broke every bone in his body.” But then came Snake Canyon and the “Rocket Cycle.” See, he was going to jump a canyon, but what happened was that he flew halfway across said canyon — clearly not going to make it — and as luck would have it, his bike “malfunctioned” and shot out his parachutes, and the world watched as Evel floated around the canyon and into obscurity. It was over for him. To this day he doesn’t exist in your spell check, which just shows you how fickle fame can be. Back in Atlantic City, New Jersey, I find the city
under siege in the form of an “annual air show.” Wave after wave of fighter planes fly sorties over the boardwalk, and PTSDinducing jets are buzzing the famed resort’s tall buildings. Throngs of people are looking up in awe, some in fear. I scan the crowd. Some look like they’re having an adrenaline rush because they keep saying how dangerous every maneuver was, as if they wanted to see an air disaster. (Others contend it was Donald Trump’s show of force to this former rebel enclave, perhaps a message to the Seminoles who were dismantling the Trump Taj Mahal.) Some fans attend baseball games hoping to see nobody do anything,
• It was 17th-century French philosopher Rene Descartes who made the following sage observation: “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.”
• Does the sight of a bald eagle inspire you with patriotism? If so, you can thank John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who overruled Benjamin Franklin when deciding on the national bird. Had Franklin had his way, we’d be looking to find nation-
al pride in the somewhat more humble turkey. • When you think of large tire manufacturers, the companies that immediately spring to mind are probably Goodyear and Michelin. You might be surprised to learn, then, that the world’s largest manufacturer of tires is actually Danish toy company The Lego Group. It’s true; they produce more tires than any other manufacturer. (Just don’t try to put them on your car.) • The active ingredient in aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid, is derived from the bark of the willow tree. • Those who study such
things say that when buying beer at the grocery store, men tend to get sixpacks, while women are more likely to stock up with 12-packs. • In 2010, a man in Canada heard a strange sound coming from a dumpster in his neighborhood. When he looked in, he was shocked to find a newborn baby. He rescued the infant, of course, and took it to the authorities. It was only later that he found out that he was the baby’s father. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve heard many times that feral cats are territorial and can’t be trained to live
with humans. But we have a feral cat colony in an old orange grove behind our neighborhood, and I’ve occasionally seen them lounging around in small groups. Some do come into neighbors’ yards to eat food set out for them. Do you think the prevailing wisdom about feral cats is wrong? — Carl in Gainesville, Florida DEAR CARL: Cats tend to be very social animals,
but how they relate to other cats versus how they relate to humans is very different. A post in the Merck Veterinary Manual gives insight into the differences in the way cats socialize depending on how they were raised. While most cats are indeed solitary hunters, and feral cats tend to be territorial, those feral cats also have a social group. The cats you saw hanging out are probably a family unit, with several females living together for protection and communal raising of their litters. Kittens within this feral family learn to socialize with other cats, and the most important period of socialization takes place as they are being weaned, at about 7 to 9 weeks of age, the Merck post explains. Because they’re not
exposed to humans (and are protected from exposure to other animals), feral kittens socialize differently from domestic kittens and will avoid contact with humans. From your description, it sounds as if some of the adult cats are less fearful of humans, or have at least learned that some homes have free food outside and no predators. Their kittens are observing this, and learning the same things. So you may be seeing that particular colony reducing its fear of humans over a few generations of cats, rather than its older cats being tamed. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.
As I sit here burning the retinas out of my eyes trying to see the total eclipse occur (if only that darn cloud would move out of the way), my mind shifts to thoughts of Evel Knievel. Millennials do not know the man, and if any remember some of his cameos on assorted reality TV or talk shows, they saw a hobbling old man with a cane. Well, guess what, kids? That cane was filled with Wild Turkey 101. That’s Evel Knievel, a guy who used to fling himself on a motorcycle over

because that’s “perfect.” And then there are those who go to see hockey players fight, race-car drivers crash, quarterbacks get their legs cracked in half, and motorcyclists plunge into deep ravines filled with sharks. As for me, I prefer the sun to not be blocked by the moon, that our Air Force stays strong, motorcyclists to obey the rules of the road, but more than anything, hope to see most of next year’s battles on the field of play only. Labor Day is a celebration held on the first Monday in September to recognize American workers, their contributions to the prosperity of our country, and the products that they produce. Labor Day has been celebrated nationwide since 1894. One of the most recognizable icons of labor and the contributions made by women in the workforce is “Rosie the Riveter.” She is the ultimate representation of the indefatigable World War II-era woman who rolled up her sleeves, flexed her muscles and
said, “We Can Do It!” But this image isn’t the original Rosie. In 1942, as World War II raged in Europe and the Pacific, the song “Rosie the Riveter” filled radio waves across the home front. The “Rosie” image popular during the war was created by illustrator Norman Rockwell for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post on May 29, 1943 — the Memorial Day issue. Mary Doyle Keefe was the model for Norman
Impress guests with some homemade salsa Gatherings of family and friends are better with food, and few foods are more universally beloved than salsa. Whether they’re hosting a gathering for the big game or a celebration of Hispanic culture and cuisine, hosts who want to go the extra mile can forgo store-bought salsa for the following homemade recipe for “Warm Black Bean Salsa” courtesy of Judith Finlayson’s “The Health Slow Cooker: 135 GlutenFree Recipes for Health and Wellness” (Robert Rose). Warm Black Bean Salsa Makes about 3 cups •2 cups cooked black beans, drained, rinsed and mashed (see tip 1 below) •1 cup diced tomatoes (see tip 2 below) •4 green onions, finely chopped •2 roasted peppers (poblano or sweet), peeled and diced •1 roasted jalapeño, seeded and diced, or 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce •1 teaspoon puréed garlic (see tip 3 below) •1 teaspoon finely grated lime zest •2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice •2 cups shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese •2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro leaves •Finely chopped green onions In slow cooker stoneware, combine beans, tomatoes, green onions, poblano, jalapeño peppers, garlic, lime zest and juice, and cheese. Stir well. Cover and cook on high for 1-1⁄2 hours, until mixture is hot and bubbly. Stir in cilantro, sprinkle with green onions, if using, and serve. Tips Use 14- to 19-ounce can of no-salt-added beans, drained. Or cook dried
Rockwell’s famous “Rosie the Riveter” painting. The Rockwell image depicts a muscular woman wearing overalls, goggles and pins of honor on her lapel. She sports a leather wristband and rolled-up sleeves. She sits with a riveting tool in her lap, eating a sandwich, and “Rosie” is inscribed on her lunch pail. And, she’s stepping on a copy of Adolph Hitler’s book “Mein Kampf.” The magazine cover exemplified the American can-do spirit and illustrated the notion of women working in previously male-dominated manufacturing jobs, an ever-growing reality while the men fought overseas. The cover was an enormous success, and soon stories about real-life “Rosies” began appearing in newspapers across the country. The government took advantage of the popularity of Rosie the Riveter and embarked on a recruiting campaign of the same name, bringing millions of women out of the home and into the workforce. To this day, Rosie the Riveter is still considered the most successful government advertising campaign in history. Manufacturing giant Westinghouse commissioned artist J. Howard
Miller to make a series of posters to promote the war effort. One such poster featured the image of a woman with her hair wrapped up in a red polkadot scarf, rolling up her sleeve and flexing her bicep with the words ‘We Can Do It!’ printed in a blue caption bubble. To many people today, this image is “the” Rosie the Riveter. The connection of Miller’s image and “Rosie” is a recent phenomenon, mainly due to the reproduction of the image on merchandise and posters. I discovered two wonderful cookbooks with recipes and oral histories by real-life “Rosie the Riveters.” The “Rosie the Riveter Celebration Cookbook” is published by the American Rosie the Riveter Association. It contains photos, biographies and recipes from 56 women around the U.S. who did industrial work during WWII. The “Rosie the Riveter Cookbook” by Girard and Sam Sagmiller is a loving tribute to their mother, Rachel Sagmiller, and her “can do” work ethic. A WWII version of this recipe for No-Bake Peanut Butter Pudding Bars can be found in the Sagmiller’s cookbook. My version
makes use of the microwave and a few modern products, but it’s still a “can do” no-bake treat! NO-BAKE PEANUT BUTTER PUDDING BARS •1 cup sugar or stevia •1 cup light corn syrup or 1/2 cup agave syrup •2 cups creamy peanut butter •3 cups Rice Krispies •3 cups Corn Flakes •3/4 cup unsalted butter •2-1/2 cups powdered sugar •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •2 (4-ounce) packages vanilla instant pudding •1/4 cup milk •1 (12-oz package) semisweet chocolate chips •1/2 cup unsalted butter Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and set aside. Using a large glass or microwaveable bowl, combine sugar or stevia, and the corn syrup or agave syrup. Cook on HIGH until bubbling at the edges, about 2-3 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. Alternately, place ingredients in a large pot and cook over medium-high heat on the stove until bubbling, stirring occasionally, until combined. Stir in peanut butter

until melted. Add rice and corn cereals until coated. Press mixture into lined baking sheet. Melt 3/4 cup unsalted butter in the microwave on HIGH for about 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, vanilla pudding mix and milk. Spread pudding mixture over the cereal layer in the pan. In a microwaveable bowl, melt chocolate chips and 1/2 cup butter on HIGH for 30-seconds, stir to combine, and continue to microwave for another 15 to 30 seconds, as needed, stirring each time, until melted and creamy. Spread over pudding mixture in pan. Refrigerate for one hour to set. Lift bars out with foil or parchment and cut into squares or triangles. When moles are worrisome Skin cancer is one of the most pervasive types of cancer, and just about everyone is at risk of getting it. The American Cancer Society says that, over the past 30 years, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. Melanoma, while not the most common form of skin cancer, is the deadliest form of the disease. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable. One way to detect melanoma early is to be aware of moles and new growths on the skin. Brown spots, growths and moles on the body are often harmless, but they may be indicative of skin cancer. Experts say that anyone who has more than 100 moles is at greater risk for melanoma than others. Knowing one’s skin and being aware of any changes is key to detecting skin cancer much more promptly. Understanding the ABCDE’s of detecting
melanoma and the “Ugly Duckling” sign are important strategies for detecting skin cancer. Here’s what a person should know.
ABCDE The Ugly Duckling sign is often used with another diagnostic tool called ABCDE. This is an acronym for the detection steps: Asymmetry, Border,
Color, Diameter, and Evolving. • Asymmetry: If an imaginary line is drawn through the middle of the mole and the two halves of the mole do not match up, this could be a warning sign. Normal spots tend to be symmetrical. • Border: The borders of early melanoma tend to be jagged or notched, while regular moles have even borders. • Color: A mole with multiple colors might be melanoma. • Diameter: Melanomas tend to be larger than the diameter of a pencil eraser. Large spots should be investigated. • Evolving: If a mole starts to change all of a sudden by growing or changing color, or even if it simply feels different, see a doctor. “When in doubt, check it out” can be applied to detecting skin cancer. It is better to be safe than sorry, especially when considering that early detection can save lives in the event of melanoma.

Ugly Duckling sign This concept was introduced in 1998 and relates to the observation that nevi, or moles, on the body tend to look like one another — much like all the ducklings in a flock will resemble one another. However, a mole that is unlike the other, or an “ugly duckling,” may indicate the presence of melanoma. Nevi may present in different patterns, which are deemed “normal” to a particular person. An outlier, or a mole that doesn’t fit the pattern, could raise a red flag. The outlier may be darker than surrounding moles or it may be smaller.
