Fun times are ahead for preschoolers and kindergartners when you create a collection of handson alphabet letters that reinforce sounds and the words they are learning to pronounce, read and spell. Craft the 26 letters, save and use them over and over to practice language learning skills. Here’s what you’ll need: —26 sheets of poster board or cardboard, 9 inches by 12 inches —pencil and markers —scissors —assorted small glueon objects, stickers, mag-
• It was 20th-century American philosopher, writer and educator Susanne Katherina Langer who made the following sage observation: “If we would have new knowledge, we must get us a whole world of new questions.” • In Western cultures, the owl is associated with wisdom, but in some Asian countries, it’s traditionally a symbol of stupidity.
• If you use cold water to clean all of your clothes, you’ll save about $40 a year in electricity costs. Your clothes will last longer too. And consider a clothesline for air-drying items like towels and sheets on nice days. That saves electricity as well. • “I just filled a nick in my wood floor with a brown crayon. It totally works. I just rubbed it into the mark, and then used a soft rag to work it in. You can’t even tell where it was. I thank my dad for this tip.” — C.L. in Arizona • “To see the numbers on my socket set, I used my wife’s red nail polish. I painted it over the numbers and then quickly used a tissue to wipe off the excess. The red color sunk into the indentations, making the numbers easier to read.” — E.L.D. in Indiana • “To get my kids to do chores, I sometimes will

• In the 9th century, a Norseman named Sigurd Eysteinsson earned the name Sigurd the Mighty while helping to lead the Viking conquest of what is now northern Scotland. As part of a continuing effort to expand his Scottish conquest, Sigurd challenged a native ruler, Mael Brigte the Bucktoothed, to a battle. Each leader was supposed to bring 40 men to the battle, but leave the tasks I want done written on sticky notes. The kids have to complete the tasks and turn in the notes to me in order to get their allowances. Some money is just given, but more chores means more money. It motivates them to do more.” — L.P. in Florida • You may have heard this before, but some people don’t believe it: Skip the fabric softener on your towels, because while it does make them soft and fluffy, it also takes away their efficiency at absorbing water over time. If your towels don’t dry like they used to, double wash them — one cycle with hot water and added baking soda (which also de-stinks them) followed by another hot water cycle with only vinegar. making all at once, consider designing a letter per week. Or start with a few, such as those that spell your child’s name.) 2. Choose a letter together and come up with things that begin with the sound of that letter. For example, the sound “p” in pasta for the letter “P.” Sigurd broke his own rule and brought 80 warriors. Unsurprisingly, Brigte lost. After beheading his defeated foe, Sigurd displayed Brigte’s head on his saddle as a trophy of war. He got his just desserts in the end, though; as he rode, Sigurd’s leg was scratched by Brigte’s buck teeth. The seemingly insignificant wound festered, and Sigurd the Mighty was killed by the infection. • You may already know that seahorses mate for life. Learn how to keep your diabetes in check soring the program. Diabetes Undone is a series of video lectures focused on minimizing the effects of the disease. It educates students on how to lower and manage their blood sugar levels, and how to create a healthy diet. The program says, if it’s followed correctly, it can reverse a prediabetes or diabetes diagnosis. Dr. Wes Youngberg and Brenda Davis, RD, teach the course through the videos. Better Living is hosting
an information session on Sept. 28 on the program. The course begins on Oct. 10 and runs on Tuesday and Thursday nights until November. The class is open to anyone. People with diabetes, prediabetes, or no diabetes are encouraged to attend. “It’s a life-changing class,” Nischuk said. Nischuk organized the Diabetes Undone program earlier this year in March. They had 30 participants, who gave the program a
positive reception. “We had one gentleman whose sugars were 18 and in one month they were down to six,” she said. Participants are allowed to bring a partner with them to the classes. Guests can attend the program free of charge. Nischuk said dieting is easier when you have a loved one who understands what you’re going through. “There’s a lot of group support, which is important,” she said.
Better Living offers other avenues for health education. They host a monthly “Healthy Eating Club.” Nischuk also would like to host cooking classes in the future.
“We’re trying to... improve the health of our community,” she said. “We’d like to better [it].”
The deadline to apply for Diabetes Undone is Oct. 6. It cost $129 to enroll. People can register at the Better Living Centre in person.
Harvest still ahead of the average Rain showers last week delayed harvest for some producers but most were back in the field within a few days. Seventy-five per cent of the crop is now combined, up from 65 per cent last week, which is well ahead of the five year (2012-2016) average of 58 per cent for this time of year. Sixteen per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 89 per cent of the crop is now
combined. The southeastern region has 86 per cent combined; the west-central region 74 per cent; and the east-central region 72 per cent. The northeastern region has 53 per cent combined, while the northwestern region has 46 per cent combined. While many producers have wrapped up harvest operations, many more will need weather conditions to improve so that crops can dry down sufficiently for harvest to continue.
Ninety-seven per cent of field peas, 88 per cent of mustard, 87 per cent of durum, 83 per cent of chickpeas and barley, 76 per cent of spring wheat, 65 per cent of oats and 33 per cent of flax have now been combined. Thirty per cent of canola is swathed or ready to straight-cut. After more than a month of little to no rainfall, most areas of the province received between trace amounts to 36 mm in the Carnduff area. Additional rainfall

earlier this week was welcomed by the majority of producers as it will help replenish topsoil moisture conditions and germinate fall cereals. Topsoil moisture conditions have slightly improved with the recent rainfall, although the subsoil will need significant amounts of rain to replenish what has been lost from the hot and dry weather. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 21 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and 42 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 16 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short and 48 per cent very short. Overall crop quality has been good to excellent, with minimal disease issues. Crop yields vary greatly across the province, depending on seeding dates and summer moisture levels. While the majority of crops have yielded about average so far, many producers in southern and central areas have reported significantly lower than average yields on crops such as canola, soybeans and durum. Strong winds, lack of moisture and frost are the main causes of crop damage this past week. Combine and grass fires continue to be reported due to the extremely dry conditions. Pastures

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Big Sick” (R) — It’s hard to believe that such heavyweight subjects (cultural divide, immigration stereotypes, serious illness) can be handled deftly and brightly in a rom com, but such is “The Big Sick,” by Apatow Films. Director Michael Showalter pairs a Pakistani-born parttime driver and comedian Kumail Nanjiani with grad student Emily Gardner (Zoe Kazan) — smart, sweet and funny, but white. Traditional culture clash seems to nix a relationship, but then Emily suddenly gets sick and falls into a coma. Kumail and her parents (the incomparable Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) must hash out the meaning of love while they bond over their shared concern for Emily. “The Hero” (R) — Washed-up legend Lee Hayden (Sam Elliot) used to be a Big Deal in Westerns. These days he’s more likely to be smoked out than smoking hot, hanging around with sidekick Jeremy (Nick

Sam Elliott in “The Hero” Offerman). As is often the case, a shocking cancer diagnosis blows away the haze surrounding him, and he begins a sober search not for the glory days but for some kind of legacy — be it reconnecting with his estranged daughter Lucy (Krysten Ritter), attempting to find love in an unlikely place (Laura Prepon) or looking for that last great gig. “Certain Women” (R) — Director Kelly Reichardt brings to the screen three female-centered vignettes based on the short stories of Maile Meloy. Earnest and understated, the film’s central characters have a uniquely imperfect way of facing the sometimes hardscrabble road of the American woman, mirrored by the landscapes •2-1/2 cups peeled and chopped tomatoes •1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper •1/2 cup chopped onion •1 cup finely chopped cabbage •1 tablespoon Brown Sugar Twin •1/8 teaspoon black pepper •2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes •2 cups cooked rice In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute
in which they develop, a cold backdrop of Montana. Laura Dern plays a lawyer whose client develops boundary issues from the impotence of his situation, which sets her up to be his personal confessional and hostage negotiator. Michelle Williams, bemoaning the burdens of being the family boss, faces sexism and obstruction while building her dream home. Kristen Stewart is a young, impoverished lawyer whose lessons in educational law intrigue a lonely ranch hand with whom she forms a tenuous relationship. “The Devil’s Candy” (NR) — Director Sean Byrne revisits the hauntingly familiar theme of Satanic ritual killing with a twist — this voice implores
its killer to target children, as they are “The Devil’s Candy.” Ethan Embry stars as Jesse Hellman, a painter who moves his fringe family — hairstylist wife Astrid (Shiri Appleby) and quirky daughter Zooey (Kiara Glasco) — to the outskirts of Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, it is into a house where a couple was recently killed. When the son (Pruitt Taylor Vince) of slain couple shows up and dead children become Jesse’s inspired painting subject, things begin to go very wrong. Heavy metal riffs underscore everything, because ... metal and Satan just go together.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a retired engineer, and engineers like solving problems. I find that people have difficulty swallowing medications because swallowing a gulp of water is an unnatural act when compared with everyday unnoticed swallowing, and that people are taking too small a sip of water, so they feel the pills, which can trigger a gag reflex. The solution is to swallow a large sip of water
without pills to prepare the mind and body for the relatively rare swallowing process that will follow. Then, take a large sip of water and swallow with pills. — R.E. ANSWER: As someone who has studied physics, if not engineering, the small sip of water lubricates the esophagus, so pills are less likely to be stuck. I have always recommended a small sip followed by a large gulp, for a different reason from yours. As far as specific positions, some people seem to do better with chin up, others with chin down. Taking a pill with some food or applesauce (or something of similar texture) helps many people. Practicing with something (a breath mint or M&M) can
help you find what works best for you. Tepid or even warm water helps some. DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. She’s 85. She tried a cortisone shot, with very shortlived relief, and physical therapy, to no avail. She’s been prescribed pain pills, which cause her to sleep more than you’d expect for her age. Her doctor seems to be out of options. I read about laser treatment for this area. Do you think this might help, or do you have other ideas? — M.R. ANSWER: “Spinal stenosis” is the term we use to describe compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots by bony structures in the spine. This may be a result of arthritis, skeletal disease and many other
conditions. One common finding is difficulty after walking, causing someone to want to sit or lie down. I often see people with spinal stenosis who lean over while walking, as though they are walking into a stiff wind. Many sufferers can walk for prolonged periods with a shopping cart, because the leaning-over position relieves the pressure on the nerves. Surgery for spinal stenosis can be challenging, and in an 85-year-old, the risk of complications is higher. However, given her symptoms and lack of response to nonsurgical therapy, consulting with a surgeon may be appropriate. There may still be additional medical therapies she hasn’t tried before doing so.
I am not a surgeon, and only a surgeon can appropriately choose the tools for a given surgery. However, having looked over the research in this area, there is no evidence that laser offers any advantage over traditional surgery. READERS: Back pain is the No. 2 reason for doctor visits in the U.S. To learn more about the back and spine, order the booklet Back Problems by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer

After Floyd Mayweather Jr. won his 50th fight, a few us at Sporting View headquarters wondered aloud: Who from history could have beaten him? Not Hearns, and not Hagler, we decided, but we all agreed that Sugar Ray Leonard would be up to the task. That begged the question: What other “superfights” were out there that we’d pay to see? Here’s an abridged version of what we came up with: Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs, 5-foot-10, 71-inch reach) vs. Joe Frazier (32-41, 27 KOs, 5-foot-11, 73-inch reach) We thought about bringing in Sonny Liston to fight Tyson, but decided that “Smokin’” Joe Frazier would provide better optics. Frazier would come in low, ducking and weaving, swinging his left hook with bad intentions, hoping to catch Tyson in the ear behind his famous Cus D’Amato-inspired “peek-a-boo” defense. Unfortunately for Joe, it’s unlikely it would have worked. When Tyson was at his peak, he was even scarier than Foreman or Liston at their meanest. Tyson would walk Frazier down, Frazier would be swinging from his heels and Tyson would lower the boom by launching him off
the floor with one of his trademark combinations that ended with an uppercut. Result: Tyson by KO in the early rounds
would have danced out of any trouble spots, and would have dominated both the third and fourth zones. Their fight may

Muhammad Ali (56-5, 37 KOs, 6-foot-3, 78-inch reach) vs. Joe Louis (663, 52 KOs, 6-foot-2, 76-inch reach) There are four zones in boxing your opponent. The first zone is when you’re body to body, maybe in the clinch, and you’re trading blows on the inside, usually uppercuts that sting but don’t have enough power behind them to knock you out. The second zone is when you’re a foot or two away from the other boxer and you’re really wheeling and dealing ... hooks can land, combinations are king. The third zone is what is called “the pocket.” This is where the boxer has his reach calibrated to the opponent’s head. The fourth zone is from way outside, keeping your distance from your foe, a launching ground for the boxer to come in with overhead power punches. Probably more than any heavyweight boxer in history, Joe Louis excelled in that second zone. His shots were deadly accurate and he would hit you with combinations that seemed otherworldly and with lots of power because he knew how to plant his feet. But Louis would have a major problem against Ali. During an interview between the two, Ali made one thing clear: “You’re too slow, Joe.” And he was right. Against Louis, Ali BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)

Brace Yourself For Winter
Improve indoor air quality in winter Homes tend to be stuffier in autumn and winter. As temperatures outside dip, windows are closed and air quality inside homes can suffer. Poor indoor air quality can not only be uncomfortable, causing residents to experience headaches, dry eyes and nasal congestion, but also can be unhealthy. Poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases, such as asthma. Though it’s not feasible or healthy to open windows when temperatures outside dip to near or below freezing, there are steps everyone can take to improve the indoor air quality in their homes. • Add to your décor with plants. Plants provide both aesthetic and practical appeal to a home’s interior. Houseplants can clean and purify the air in a home, helping to remove formaldehyde, benzene and other toxins that can make indoor air unhealthy to breathe. Benzene is an irritant that can cause dizziness, headache, nausea, and blurred vision, among other side effects. Formaldehyde, which is often found in homes
thanks to its widespread use in a range of products, can cause watery eyes, nausea and wheezing. • Watch what you are
lighting up. Many homeowners know that smoking indoors drastically reduces indoor air quality, putting even nonsmokers at
heightened risk of developing various respiratory ailments. Homeowners concerned about the indoor air quality in their homes should ban smoking inside, no matter how low temperatures dip outside. In addition, homeowners with wood-burning stoves and fireplaces should be especially diligent maintaining these features, as they can release harmful soot and smoke if they are not taken care of. Some people may also be allergic to incense and scented candles, so keep a watchful eye on residents and guests whenever you light candles or sticks of incense. If any symptoms of allergies appear, avoid lighting any more candles or incense, waiting until you can open the windows if you want to light any
again. • Purchase an air purifier. Air purifiers are beneficial year-round, helping to remove allergens and particles from a home. High-efficiency particulate air filters, known as HEPA filters, are extremely effective at removing
airborne particulates from the air inside your home. • Pay attention to pets. Like their owners, pets tend to spend more time indoors during the winter. That means more fur and pet dander, the skin flakes in an animal’s fur Continued on Page A12

Brace Yourself For Winter
Winterize to safeguard your home Autumn is a beautiful time of year marked by welcoming cooler temperatures and the natural beauty of leaves changing colors. Autumn also has a tendency to fly by, as if the powerful weather of winter simply cannot wait to make its presence felt. With such a seemingly short time between the end of summer and the dawn of winter, homeowners know they don’t have too many weekends in between to prepare their homes for the potentially harsh months ahead. But such preparation, often referred to as “winterizing,” can make a home more comfortable when the mercury dips below freezing, while saving homeowners substantial amounts of money along the way. • Clean the gutters. Leaves falling in fall can be a beautiful sight to behold, but many of those leaves are likely finding their way into your gutters, where they can lodge and cause a host of problems down the road. If the leaves and additional debris, such as twigs and dirt, that pile up in your gutters are not cleared out before the first winter storm, the results can be costly and even catastrophic. Precipitation needs a place to go upon hitting your roof, and gutters facilitate the travel of such precipitation from your roof into street-level drainage systems. If gutters are backed up with leaves and other debris, then ice dams may form, forcing water to seep in through the roof. That damage can be costly and can even cause the roof to collapse inward in areas with heavy snowfall. Clean gutters throughout the fall, especially if your property has many trees, and be sure to check gutters one last time before the arrival of winter. • Tend to your attic. Homeowners who have attics in their homes might want to add some extra insulation up there, especially those who recall
feeling cold inside their homes last winter, which is often a telltale sign of improper insulation in a home. A good rule of thumb when determining if your attic needs more insulation is to look for the ceiling joists. If you can see the joists, then you need more insulation. • Address leaky windows and doors. Sometimes attic insulation is not the culprit when it comes to a cold home. Oftentimes, leaky windows and doors are the real bad guys in a drafty home. Fall is a great time to inspect for
leaky windows and doors, as the wind outside can serve as your partner. When the wind outside is blowing, take a tour of your home’s windows and doorways, standing next to them to determine if there any holes or leaks that are letting outdoor air inside. If you notice any leaks beneath exterior doors, install some door sweeps to keep outdoor air where it belongs. Leaks around windows can be snuffed out with caulk or weather stripping. • Test the furnace. Homeowners typically do
not devote much thought to their furnaces in spring, summer and fall. But with winter on the horizon, fall is the time to test the furnace to make sure it’s ready for the months ahead. Expect a somewhat foul yet brief odor to appear when starting the furnace. That odor should dissipate shortly, but if it does not go away, then your furnace is likely in need of repair. But even
if the smell does not stick around, you might want to have the furnace cleaned by a professional anyway. Such cleanings ensure the furnace works efficiently throughout the winter. • Clean the garage. You might not mind parking in the driveway during the warmer months of the year, but why subject your vehicles to harsh winter weather if you don’t have to? Clean the garage
in the fall so you have an indoor parking spot throughout the winter season. Protecting your car from the elements can add years to its life and also saves you the trouble of digging your car out of the snow. Fall is a time of year for homeowners to spend a weekend or two preparing their homes for the often harsh weather that awaits when winter arrives.

Simplify your fall leaf cleanup Apple pie, pumpkins and blooming chrysanthemums are symbols of autumn. But nothing signals the arrival of fall more than the millions of leaves that begin to cascade from the trees as the temperatures dip. Many people feel nothing is more beautiful than the yellow, red, purple, and orange leaves that coat neighborhoods and countrysides each fall. But in spite of their beauty, leaves might be a nuisance to homeowners tasked with removing the growing piles of them from their lawns. Those with large oak and maple trees in front of their homes understand the seemingly endless work of leaf removal. As the days begin to grow shorter and colder,
these changes trigger a hormone release in trees, prompting them to drop their leaves. This chemical message causes the formation of abscission cells where the leaf stem meets the branch. So rather than merely dropping off of trees when the wind blows, the leaves actually fall off deliberately. Left untouched, fallen leaves can contribute to
AIR Continued from Page A10 or hair that can trigger allergic reactions, is likely in your home during the winter than in the summer. To combat this, bathe your pets regularly in the winter, making sure to wash the animal’s bedding in hot water on a weekly basis as well. • Open the windows when possible. Winter does not typically provide many opportunities to open the windows, but you might
get a few chances to let some fresh air in through the windows during winter. Make the most of these opportunities, and when possible crack the windows when you’re cleaning so dust and other particles that kick up have a path outside of your home. Clean interior air should be a year-round priority, but homeowners may have to go the extra mile to keep their homes’ interior air clean when winter arrives.
lawn problems such as poor aeration, mold growth and moisture issues. Leaves also can cause staining on driveways and walkways. Prompt removal can help prevent any problems. To make faster and easier work of leaf removal, keep these tips in mind. • Mow over thin leaf coverage. If only a few leaves have fallen, use a mulching mower to shred the leaves until they are small enough that they won’t suffocate the lawn. The small pieces will decompose in the lawn, reintroducing nutrients as a result. • Use an ergonomic leaf rake. Ergonomic rakes can prevent back and arm pain, much in the way that ergonomic shovels do when shoveling snow. • Invest in a quality leaf blower. Using a rake is good exercise, but homeowners with large properties might want to use a leaf blower. These machines can dislodge leaves from
bushes and hard-to-reach crevices, and they work faster than rakes. • Use a tarp. Rake or blow leaves onto a tarp and then drag the tarp to the curbside or to the back of a truck for proper disposal. Special leaf scoopers enable you to grab more leaves if they need to be picked up and transported. Otherwise, you can use the covers from two garbage pails to achieve a similar effect.
• Work with the wind. Rake in the direction the wind is blowing and downhill if your property slopes. This way it will be easier on you, and you won’t be working against Mother Nature. • Spread out the job. Do not attempt to remove all fallen leaves in a single day. Schedule a few cleaning days during the season
to make lighter work of the job than if you tried to do it all at once. Keep in mind that leaves will continue to fall throughout the season and you may need to spend a few days removing leaves from your yard. Removing leaves is a large part of fall home maintenance. Employ these tips to make this task less strenuous.

Heating homes more efficiently With colder weather right around the corner, many homeowners are once again giving thought to their home heating needs and if it is possible to heat their homes more efficiently. More than half of the energy used in a typical home goes toward heating and cooling costs. With energy costs continually on the rise, many homeowners want to make the most of their heating systems and use the heat in the most efficient manner possible. A heating system is most effective when the home is free from drafts. Before investing in a new furnace or considering other drastic changes, determine if a few simple repairs can help your heating system perform more efficiently. Check around doors and windows for drafts that could force heating systems to work harder, and seal any leaks you find. This also will help in the summer when you are trying to keep the house as cool as possible. Determine if cold air is infiltrating the home elsewhere, such as from around pipes leading to the outdoors. Caulking or foam insulation can remedy the situation. Adding extra insulation in garages and attics also can help. If insulation is less than R-30, the home probably can use more. If after increasing insulation your home still feels drafty, it may require additional insulation in the exterior walls. Invest in a quality thermostat. Many modern room thermostats allow homeowners to set different temperatures for different times of day, and some even allow homeowners to establish a different heating schedule for the weekends. Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to keep their homes cooler when unattended or during sleeping hours. The heat can be programmed to turn on or increase in temperature when resi-

spin clockwise will draw down the hot air that rises to the ceiling and allow it to better flow through the home. In addition to these suggestions, homeowners can employ these other ener-

gy- and cost-saving measures. • Reuse oven heat. After cooking a meal in the oven, open the oven door and let the residual heat escape into the kitchen and the rest of the house. Note, it is not safe to heat a home with the oven, and the oven should be turned off before opening the door. • Add a little humidity. Moist air tends to hold heat better. Add some humidity to dry indoor air, particularly if the relative humidity of the home as measured with a hygrometer is below 25 percent. Houseplants and home aquariums can add some warm moisture to the air and reduce reliance on heat. • Limit use of exhaust fans. After showering or cooking, keep the exhaust
fan on for as little time as possible so that warm air is not drawn out of the home. Heating a home effi-
ciently means reducing drafts, programming the thermostat and making the most of other ways to warm up.

ANIMAL HEALTH WEEK- OCTOBER 1 - 7 10 Foods that are toxic to pets Sharing food with our pets is a habit some of us have, but we should be mindful of what and how much that can cause harm. Though certain dog breeds may weigh up to a human’s body weight, most are only a fraction of our size. A small amount to us can be a lot to a dog depending on size. Toxic doses are often measured in units, commonly milligrams or milliliters, per kilogram of body weight. Foods that are safe for one species are not necessarily safe in another. This is due to differences in metabolism among species. For example, cat’s livers have a limited ability to metabolize various compounds and that makes them much more prone to some types of toxicity. Toxic compounds can be harmful in small amounts as well as large amounts so it would be prudent to assume that certain foods are not safe for pets at all. Precautions include “baby proofing” the home environment. Even plastic containers that lock are not safe against a large dog determined to get at goodies, so having key foods out of reach or in a locked cupboard is safest for those craftier pets. Here is a “Top 10” list of foods you should not feed your pet, or allow inadvertent access to: 1. Chocolate: One ounce of milk chocolate per pound of body weight is considered a good rule of thumb for a potentially lethal dose so it does not take much to cause harm. Theobromine, caffeine and other methylxanthines in these products are the primary toxins. Methylxanthine compounds can cause high heart rates, arrhythmias, and with significant ingestion can lead to seizures and death. Ingestion of small amounts can cause digestive upset such as vomiting and diarrhea. A good rule of thumb is
that the darker the chocolate the more toxic it is. Baker’s chocolate contains the highest amounts of these toxic compounds followed by truffles, dark chocolates and then milk chocolates. White chocolate has only trace amounts of theobromine and caffeine. Tea and coffee should be kept away from dogs and cats as they also contain methylxanthines, theobromine and caffeine. 2. Xylitol: These days products such as chewing gum, pharmacy suspensions, candies, baked goods, peanut butter and packaged sweetener containing xylitol can be widely found at the grocery store. All products with xylitol are toxic to dogs (toxicity has not been reported in cats or ferrets). Exposure leads to a low blood sugar crisis, liver damage or even liver failure and potential death. Onset of toxicity signs may be seen in less than an hour or longer than 12 hours, depending on what has been eaten. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, weakness, changes in blood cells and blood parameters, jaundice, and bleeding troubles. At higher doses when liver function is compromised, over half of dogs may die in spite of appropriate supportive care. 3. Bread dough: Rising yeast breads can be harmful to pets if they ingest this while it is on the kitchen counter rising. This is from the distention of the stomach if it is still rising and from the effects of yeast and yeast byproducts such as ethanol (alcohol). If blood alcohol levels rise high enough, intensive care may be required to prevent death, and sometimes surgery is needed to remove a large doughy mass that risks stomach breakage. 4. Alcoholic beverages (ethanol): Drinks must be kept away to reduce the risk of alcohol (ethanol) toxicity from liquor, beer and wine. One ounce of liquor in a drink may not harm an adult healthy human
but if a little Chihuahua gets a hold of that mixed drink, think of that dose per kilogram of a small dog’s body weight, as we discussed above. Alcohol toxicity may lead to behaviour and mobility issues, depression, coma and death. 5. Raw bones, meat and seafood: Food poisoning organisms are widespread in both human and pet products. Common agents you may hear about in the news include salmonella, E. Coli, campylobacter, and listeria. Uncooked food may have a large amount of bacteria, and it is easy for those bacteria to contaminate your hands or kitchen surfaces such as cutting boards and knives, so use proper kitchen hygiene to prevent transfer between food, people and pets. Raw and cooked bones can splinter and lead to damage, obstruction or even rupture of the digestive tract. Chicken bones are particularly problematic, as they tend to break into sharp shards. Contamination of jerky treats, pig ears, calf hooves, and rawhide treats is widespread also, so check for recalls before buying dried animal products. A list of rotating food recalls is found at: https://www.fda. gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/ RecallsWithdrawals/default.htm 6. Macadamia nuts: Often
termed Australian or Queensland nuts, exposed dogs experience nervous system signs (tremors, weakness, depression, stiffness, high body temperature) lasting one to two days. 7. Raisins and grapes: Even in small amounts, the ingestion of grapes and raisins are known to cause kidney failure within three days post-ingestion in dogs, cats and ferrets. Toxicity can occur even when ingested as part of a baked good. The active compound, the mechanism of action and the dose for toxicity is still not well understood. It seems even as few as three to five raisins or grapes can be problematic for some pets but not for others and so it is best to avoid ingestion entirely. 8. Onions, garlic (Allium family), leeks and chives: Dried or fresh these foods contain compounds alicin and ajoene that convert to harmful sulfur compounds. Heating
or cooking them does not alter their toxicity. Toxic signs are related to red cell bursting, leading to anemia and the inability to carry enough oxygen to the tissues. Cats are two to three times more sensitive than other species to this toxicity. 9. Rhubarb leaves and starfruit: These both contain oxalates of calcium and can cause kidney failure with acute or chronic ingestion. Animals are discouraged from ingestion because of their bitter taste. Clinical signs include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite and increased water consumption and urination. 10 Salt: Ingestion of large amounts of salt can lead to vomiting, increased body temperature seizures and even death, so keep your pets away from salty chips and other salt-rich foods. Pets will be excessively thirsty and free access to water after salt ingestion can have lethal consequences.

Istace team takes 2017 CDI Doubles Classic The team of Chris and Joshua Istace put together a pair of minus-par rounds to win the 2017 CDI Injury Recover Centre Doubles Classic at their home Rocanville Disc Golf Club on Sept. 23. The Istaces, who play out of Moosomin, edged the team of Duncan Holness (Broadview) and Ryan Seitz (Yorkton) by three strokes, shooting a minus-four 57 on the opening round then minus-five 56 on the final 18. Their minus-nine total bettered the Holness/Seitz result of minus-six on the doubles best-disc tournament. “We found our success by just playing par golf and staying positive when we didn’t hit our shots,” said Joshua, a 13-year-old golfer who teamed with his father for the event. “We knew we could not overdo it with our shots. You can’t just rip it every time on that course.” The Rocanville Disc Golf Club – which is located on the Rocanville Cross Country Ski Club trails just south of the town of Rocanville – is known for its tight fairways and the unforgiving rough made up of long grass and thick poplar bushes. It forces players to plan each shot and play a finesse-style of game on technically difficult routes. “Rocanville is the most challenging course in the
Parkland region,” said Holness, who has regularly been seen on the podium following Parkland Association of Disc Golf circuit events this season. “The tight lines and unforgiving brush make it one of the most technical courses I’ve ever played. It’s one of the best, too, if you’re brave enough to try it.” Holness said the Istaces had an advantage with Rocanville being the family’s home course, sug-

gesting their knowledge of the each hole’s routing was a great benefit. “Also, Ryan and I tend to play bigger shots. Toning down a drive just isn’t in our nature, so being forced to do exactly that made it difficult for us to catch up to the leaders in the second round,” he said. Taylor Mountain and Kadie Hozempa of Regina finished third with a score of 61-62 (plus-one) while Rick Goraluk and Karl Kreutner from Inglis, Man. were fourth with a 69-67 for a plus-14. This year’s tournament was sponsored by CDI Injury Recovery Centre and Mullett’s RONA Hardware. The Istaces also won
the tournament’s Deuce Pot competition by collecting seven birdies on the course’s 11 par-three holes through the two rounds. Holness-Seitz and Mountain-Hozempa both had five twos on the day. By being a member of the second place team, Seitz has earned a spot at the PADG’s Champions Challenge scheduled to take place at the Asessipi Beach and Campground north of Russell, Man. on Oct. 15. The Istaces and Holness had previously qualified by finishing first or second in PADG events earlier this summer. Although temperatures were cool during the event, the course was dry and the

Lower Mainland, so, even though the trees out here are much smaller and different, I enjoy being back among them when I can. From a disc golf perspective, I enjoy many of the approaches to the tonals. They offer tight lines and picturesque settings.” —submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf
journey.” Kara also told me about her fond memories on the set, saying: “I remember the atmosphere — there’s something about that time, as awful as it was, but it was electric and beautiful. You have the music and people just wanting to have fun; life was pretty tough, and people were just gathering together. There was a lot of love, and a lot of good things sometimes come from bad times. I just remember it being a lovely atmosphere. It was a great cast and crew, and everyone just enjoyed being at work. It was one of the most enjoyable things I’ve ever done.” Q: What has Tom Welling been up to lately? I haven’t seen him much since “Smallville.” — Gerry T., via Facebook A: The handsome superhero has just landed a role on the Fox hit supernatural/crime/dramedy series “Lucifer.” In its upcoming third season — which premieres Oct. 2
with 26 all-new episodes — Tom plays Marcus Pierce, a well-respected police lieutenant who develops a romantic connection with Chloe (played by Lauren German). I’m thinking that Lucifer, played by the handsome and charismatic Tom Ellis, will certainly have something to say about that. Readers: In other “Smallville” news, Erica Durance — who played opposite Tom Welling as Lois Lane — has been tapped to replace Laura Benanti as Kara’s mother, Alura, in season three of the CW’s “Supergirl.” Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed a few months back: “Unfortunately, Laura ... was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in [New York].” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: A friend of mine in England was telling me about this new series called “The Halcyon,” which she described as “Downton Abbey” in a hotel. Will that show ever come to the States? If not, do you know where or how I can see it? — Lottie F., via email A: “The Halcyon,” which is produced by Chris Croucher, who also produced “Downton Abbey,” is similar to “Downton,” but it’s quite different in most regards. The acclaimed U.K. series, which tells the story of a bustling and glamorous five-star hotel at the center of London society during World War II — premieres Monday, Oct. 2, at 10 p.m. ET on Ovation with eight one-hour episodes. I spoke with series star Kara
Kara Tointon Tointon recently, and she gave me the inside scoop. Kara revealed: “It’s such a compliment to have a comparison to anything that’s been so successful like ‘Downton Abbey.’ I can see the similarity because you’ve got the upstairs/ downstairs element, but it’s a completely different backdrop of the hotel and storyline-wise and character-wise. The best way to watch anything is just to go in completely fresh-eyed, and just take it for what it is; you’ll get the best outcome when you do that. It’s a really warm show with a great heart, and it’s fun to get carried up by the
