DEAR DR. ROACH: After having a body rash for five months, I finally was diagnosed as having subacute lupus. After searching on the Internet, I got very little understandable information. I am an 83-year-old very healthy woman. — J.B. ANSWER: Lupus (literally “wolf,” as the classic rash of systemic lupus erythematosis was thought
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might feel compelled to get involved on the “right side” of a seemingly unfair fight. But appearances can be deceptive. Get the facts before going forth into the fray. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bullying others into agreeing with your position could cause resentment. Instead, persuade them to join you by making your case on a logical point-by-point basis. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist pushing for a workplace decision you might feel is long overdue. Your impatience could backfire. Meanwhile, focus on that still-unsettled per-

to resemble a wolf bite) is a complicated group of related diseases, including SLE (the “full-blown” syndrome, which can affect many organ systems, although itself highly variable), discoid lupus erythematosis (a skin condition that can exist by itself or as part of SLE) and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosis, which I think you are referring to. SCLE is a skin condition that starts as small, red, scaly raised bumps, which coalesce or form ring-like patterns on the trunk, shoulders, forearms and neck, but usually not the face. About a third of the time, SCLE is related to a medication. Many medications are associated with development
of SCLE, including blood pressure medications, some statins, omeprazole and other anti-ulcer and GERD medications. About half the time, SCLE occurs in combination with systemic lupus. Treatment of SCLE involves careful avoidance of direct sunlight, including the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. Any drug commonly associated with SCLE should be stopped, if possible. Stopping smoking may improve the disease. Low vitamin D level often is associated with SCLE (possibly because people are avoiding sunlight), so supplementation may be necessary. If medications are needed, topical steroids are
probably the most effective treatment. Topical calcineurin inhibiters such as tacrolimus (Protopic) are (very) expensive alternatives. So many people ask me to comment on dietary treatment that I will mention that although there is no data to prove it, I have anecdotally found that the “anti-inflammatory diet” of high fruits and vegetables, low saturated fat, low processed and high wholegrain products, and high omega-3 fatty acids such as fatty fish and walnuts, may improve symptoms of lupus, and is a generally healthy diet for most people. I found two especially good websites for more information: www.lupus.

You might decide to redecorate your home, or take a trip somewhere you’ve never been, or even change your hairstyle. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might want to take a break from your busy schedule to restore your energy levels. Use this less-hectic time to also reassess your plans and make needed changes. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) What you like to think of as determination might be seen by others as nothing more than stubbornness. Try to be more flexible if you
hope to get things resolved. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch that you don’t unwittingly reveal work-related information to the wrong person. Best to say nothing until you get official clearance to open up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) With things settling down at work or at home, you can now take on a new challenge without fear of distraction. Be open to helpful suggestions from colleagues. It’s also a good time to renew friendships that might be stagnating due to neglect on both sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Congratulations. org and www.mollysfund. org. READERS: Since lupus affects many organs and joints, the signs and symptoms are equally many, and most who suffer are women. To learn more, order the Arthritis & Lupus booklet by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: At 53, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and since this runs in my family, I had the cancer removed. For three years now, I have gotten the PSA test done and my numbers have been steady at 0.01. Some friends say I should go for additional radiation treatments, but my doctor says I’m fine. I believe in my doctor, but maybe you can put the argument to rest. — M.P.
ANSWER: Believe in your doctor. A persistently low PSA is very good evidence that the cancer is cured or at least staying quiet. If the PSA starts increasing (which I hope it doesn’t), your doctor will go over your options with you. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Harvest nearing completion across SK. Warm and dry weather earlier in the week allowed many producers to return to the field after several days of rain delays. Eighty-nine per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 78 per cent last week. Harvest progress remains ahead of the five year (2012-2016) average of 82 per cent for this time of year. Eight per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 98 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern and west-central regions have 92 per cent combined and the eastcentral region 89 per cent.
The northeastern region has 78 per cent combined, while the northwestern region has 69 per cent combined. Many producers worked long hours over the last week to combine remaining crops prior to the rain. Some crops have been taken off tough and placed into aeration bins. Ninety-nine per cent of chickpeas, 98 per cent of mustard, 97 per cent of durum, 93 per cent of canaryseed, 92 per cent of spring wheat and barley, 84 per cent of canola, 81 per cent of oats, 64 per cent of flax and 46 per cent of soybeans have now been combined. Fourteen per cent of canola is swathed
or ready to straight-cut. Producers in many areas of the province welcomed the heavy rain and snow to help replenish the topsoil. However, warm and dry weather is now needed for producers to finish harvest. Rainfall this past week ranged from small amounts to 92 mm in the Kenaston area. Many central and northeastern areas reported well over 50 mm of rainfall, while areas in the south reported snow. Topsoil moisture conditions have greatly improved with the recent moisture, but more will be needed to replenish the subsoil moisture for next

of the southern and central regions were greatly affected by the extended period of hot and dry conditions this summer. Many crops did not fill properly as they ran out of moisture much earlier than normal. Some cereal crops have reduced protein content and lighter bushel weights. Spring wheat grades are above the 10 year average and are being reported as 74 per cent 1 CW, 23 per cent 2 CW and three per cent 3 CW. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to localized flooding, frost, strong winds, lack of moisture and wildlife such as geese and deer. Producers are busy
combining, completing fall field work, moving cattle and hauling bales.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (PG-13) — Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Disney bring yet another installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, in which the luckless Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) once again pits his vexatious charms against an undead seafarer — Javier Bardem as Capt. Salazar, once a Spanish pirate hunter now cursed captain of the Silent Mary. Jack must track down the legendary Trident of Poseidon to defend himself, with help from Will Turner’s son Henry (Brenton Thwaites) and the lovely astronomer Carina (Kaya Scodelario). Geoffrey Rush returns as Capt. Barbarossa. While repetitive in theme, it’s still packed with interesting visuals and plenty of love and action, at least enough for a satisfying
• On Oct. 16, 1773, the first public statement against the British Parliament’s Tea Act, a document known as the “Philadelphia Resolutions,” urges all Americans to oppose the British tax. Two months later, a group of colonists disguised as Mohawks boarded three British tea ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor. • On Oct. 22, 1797, Andre-Jacques Garnerin makes the first parachute jump from a hydrogen balloon 3,200 feet above Paris. As he had failed to include an air vent at the top of the prototype, Garnerin oscillated wildly in his descent, but he landed shaken but unhurt. • On Oct. 17, 1906, Wilhelm Voigt, a 57-yearold German shoemaker, impersonates an army officer and leads an entire squad of soldiers to help him steal 4,000 marks from the mayor’s office. Voigt humiliated the German army by exploiting their
Seann William Scott in “Goon: Last of the Enforcers” rainy afternoon. “Goon: Last of the Enforcers” (R) — A hockey lockout brings a slew of new players to the Canadian minor league, just as Doug “The Thug” Glatt — the gold-hearted goon of the 2011 original film, again played by Seann William Scott — is sidelined with a shoulder injury. Now married to Eva (Alison Pill), and expecting a baby, he attempts to settle into a normal life and job, but is brought back onto the ice when his nemesis, the aggressive son of the Highlanders owner, tanks the team’s record with his recklessness. With some help from his old friends and colleagues — Liev
Schreiber, Jay Baruchel, Marc-Andre Grondin and all the favorites — can he reclaim his place as protector of players in time to win a championship? This reincarnation is delightfully raunchy, although it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor. “A Ghost Story” (R) — In a film where the lead actor, known for his nuanced expression, spends a significant portion of the film covered in a white sheet, you’d be forgiven for thinking it hokey or trite, but you’d be wrong. It’s sen-
timental and sweeping, both in its presentation of a passionate, timeless attachment, but also in exploring the deepness of eternal human emotion. Casey Affleck stars as a struggling musician who occupies an unassuming home with his wife, played by Rooney Mara. After his unexpected death, we witness his ghost’s emotional journey through the expanse of time, and the result is the exaltation of infinite love. “The Survivalist” (NR) — In an oppressively bereft, post-apocalypse future, a man (Martin BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)

McCann) lives alone in the forest, farming a small plot of land, ever vigilant for raids and thieves. The tension in the silence is palpable, and it is into this that two women (Mia Goth and Olwen Fouere) intrude, seeking food and shelter. Fidelity and trust are hard to come by in a world where existence hangs by a thread, but the presence of others forces these three to examine what exactly is necessary for survival. First-time
feature director Stephen Fingleton manages a rich tapestry in this isolated landscape, giving us an escalating study in need.

Autumn is here. With the new season, it’s time to discover something new and different with your family. Even familiar activities can be enjoyed with a new twist now that the kids are a year older. Whether you take a weekend day trip to ramble through the fantastical shapes of a baffling corn maze, pick out pumpkins at a patch or take in a lively Oktoberfest, there’s something outdoorsy to do for all ages and interests. Even when you step out for a neighborhood walk together, there are colorful leaves to collect, bird’s nests to spot on bare tree branches and juicy apples to discover at your local farmer’s market. Week to week, jot down, illustrate and save the memories in this artsy
Here’s the fun: 1. Cut off the front and back of a box for your book cover and back. Cut construction paper to the same size as one side of each piece of cardboard for the inside of the front cover and inside of the back of the book. Glue in place. 2. Squeeze some glue on a paper plate and dilute with a few drops of water. Use the paintbrush to paint glue across the opposite sides of the cardboard. Tear tissue paper in different sizes and press on the glue, and then pinch it a bit here and there to make irregular textures and designs. Cover the entire surface. Paint a final coat of glue over the tissue. Let dry. 3. Cut paper bags into pages slightly smaller than the cover. 4. To bind, poke three holes evenly along the left edge of the cover and back. Make corresponding holes in the paper. Stack the book back, pages and

HOLLYWOOD — As producer Ryan Murphy was getting over the disappointment of his miniseries “Feud: Bette and Joan” winning only two Emmys (for hair and makeup) out of 18 nominations, his thoughts must have turned to the lawsuit filed by two-time Oscarwinning actress, Olivia de Havilland. The Bette Davis/Joan Crawford feud allegedly began in 1945, when Crawford was dropped from her MGM contract after 25 years, and was able to talk Warner Brothers studio head Jack Warner into letting her be “Mildred Pierce” (1945). Her first film of a fourpicture deal for Warners was the non-paying benefit film “Hollywood Canteen” (Bette Davis’ pet project). Davis considered “Mildred Pierce” the one that got away,” and she felt Crawford stole it from her, along with the Oscar she would have won for it. Only one actress
Olivia de Havilland depicted in “Feud: Bette and Joan” is alive today (Crawford died in 1977 at 71, and Davis died in 1989 at 81). To add narrative to the eight-part miniseries, producers used Oscar-winners Catherine Zeta-Jones as Olivia de Havilland and Kathy Bates as Joan Blondell (who died in 1979 at 73). They never expected de Havilland, at 101 years old and living in France, to file a lawsuit. “The series made me look like a gossip who exploited others for her •1 teaspoon apple pie spice •1/3 cup Land O Lakes Fat-Free Half and Half

Heat oven to 350 F. Place pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate. Flute edges. Evenly arrange apple slices in prepared pie crust. In a medium bowl, combine Splenda, flour, margarine and apple pie spice. Mix with a fork to make a crumbly mixture. Spoon half the mixture over apples. Stir gently to blend into apples. Carefully pour half and half over apple mixture. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture over top. Bake for 1 hour. Place pie plate on a wire rack and allow to cool completely. own gain, and despite being the only living person portrayed in the show, I wasn’t consulted,” de Havilland said. We checked the book “Bette & Joan: The Divine Feud,” by Shaun Considine, published in 1989, for which he had interviewed both Davis and Crawford, and couldn’t find any quotes attributed to de Havilland as depicted. Because of her advanced age, Olivia has asked the court for and been granted a speedy trial. On Nov. 27, “Feud’s” lawyers will have to produce evidence proving De Havilland actu-
ally said the things she claims have defamed her. She’s so adamant about this case she’ll probably travel from France to testify. What happened to Simon Baker, star of “The Mentalist” (2008-2015)? He returned to his native Australia when the show ended, took time off and began preparing to direct himself in the upcoming ‘70s surfing drama “Breath,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to good reviews. Universal Pictures was disappointed in Tom Cruise’s recent “Mummy” film, which cost $195 million to make and grossed $408 million (a little bet-
ter than break even in Hollywood terms), especially since his newest release, “American Made,” grossed $34 million of its $80 million cost before even opening in the U.S. Universal was hoping his star power would kick off its slate of hor-

based on the book series “The Perfectionists,” written by “Liars” scribe Sara Shepard. Here is a description of the show from Freeform: “Everything about the town of Beacon Heights seems perfect, from its top-tier college to its overachieving residents. But nothing in Beacon Heights is as it appears. The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town’s first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi.” Q: One of my favorite authors is Neil Gaiman, and I absolutely love “American Gods.” Will he be involved in any more

Amazon previously announced that Michael Sheen and David Tennant
would be taking on starring roles in the series, playing angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, respectively. And now we know that Jack Whitehall will be playing Newton Pulsifer, aka Newt, an unfulfilled clerk-turned-witch hunter; Michael McKean will take on the role of Sergeant Shadwell, the leader of the witch-finder army who sends him on his mission. Miranda Richardson will play Madame Tracy, the psychic medium and parttime courtesan who provides a helping hand to the pair as they try to save the world from Armageddon. Trump says it’s disrespectful to the flag and the veterans who served this nation, and while I agree with that sentiment, it isn’t making me tune out. Players and veterans alike seem to agree on
one thing: They should be allowed to take the knee if they want to. Veterans fought for our constitution and way of life. They didn’t expressly go to war to defend Francis Scott Key’s signature work. “The Star Spangled Banner” was written by Key while he was in prison, and as our president will surely tell you, that means he’s a loser. Our president doesn’t like anthem writers who get captured. And while he seems to think that his message will somehow unite us, it actually has been one of the most divisive stances any president has ever taken. Football never liked it when Nixon got involved
with football, either. He was known to draw up “tricky Dick” plays for the local pro team that were never used. In 1969, he declared that he would decide who the No. 1 college team was, to the delight of nobody. But it was his speech, delivered on a football field to Whittier College grads, that contains a credo that resonates even more today than back then. “When I speak of firmness ... we must have firmness without belligerency,” Nixon said. “It’s very easy, I can assure you, and sometimes very tempting when you are insulted to strike back with the same
words. But we must avoid engaging in a war of words which would heat up the international atmosphere to the point that we would have a nuclear disaster. And a nation that is strong, a nation that is confident that it is right, does not have to resort to returning insult with insult. We can be confident of ourselves.” I’m confident that this impasse will pass soon, and we’ll just go back to watching adults play games again where they’re meant to be: on the field. When that happens, America will be truly blessed. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

This isn’t the first time politics invaded the football world. Teddy Roosevelt loved the game and helped start the NCAA while he urged rule makers to ban the controversial “flying wedge” (controversial because it KILLED players). Dwight Eisenhower played football for Army, and Richard Nixon played on the practice squad for Whittier College (more on that later). JFK made the JV squad at Harvard, Gerald Ford was an All-American center for Michigan and Ronald Reagan played on scholarship at Eureka College. Also, he played the “the Gipper” in a Hollywood movie. With the notable exception of Nixon (of course), nobody has meddled more with football than our current dear leader. Donald Trump never played the game, but he used to own the coolest USFL team — the New Jersey Generals — in the early ‘80s. There he was famous for threatening to fire the coach if he ever used fullback Maurice Carthon on a goal-line

Home improvement projects for your fall to-do list Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated and unappealing to prospective buyers. Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists. Roof inspection Less precipitation tends to fall during the warmer months than during the late fall and winter. As a result, homeowners may not be aware of leaky roofs until autumn has come and gone. But waiting until winter to inspect the roof can prove disastrous, as weather conditions will not be conducive to inspection and increased precipitation may result in potentially costly damage. Leaky roofs
can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately. Gutter cleaning While some homeowners prefer to delay their gutter cleaning projects until late fall, those whose homes are surrounded by trees may need to schedule two such projects. Gutters clogged with leaves and other debris can cause serious roof damage, and that damage can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, clogged gutters make great nesting areas for insects or critters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand and dropping leaves and debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof and leaning over gutters greatly increases your risk of injury. If the gutters are clear when you first examine them in early fall, you can wait until later in the
season to give them a complete and thorough cleaning. Once you have finished clearing the gutters, you can use a hose to run water through them and the downspouts to confirm everything is functioning properly. Window and doorway inspection Before temperatures start dropping once again, homeowners will want to inspect their windows and doorways for leaks. Over time, cracks can develop around windows and doorways, and while such cracks are rarely noticeable when the weather outside is warm, they can be quite obvious and very costly if they remain unsealed come the start of winter. Cold air can enter a home through cracks around windows and doorways, and many homeowners who don’t suspect leaks may respond by turning up the thermostats in their homes. That can prove quite expensive over a full winter. Choose a windy autumn day to place a hand by windows and external doorways in your home to see if you can feel drafts. If you can, seal these cracks as soon as possible.
WINTER'S COMING... ARE YOU READY?
Patio cleanup Patios are popular hangouts during spring and summer, and that can result in a lot of wear and tear. Once you store patio furniture for the winter, inspect your entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing. While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, you can still clean any stained areas around the grill and look for cracks in the sidewalk that need to be addressed. Preparing for fall home improvement projects ahead of time can
help homeowners complete projects in a timely manner and ensures they
won’t be forced to brave the winter elements when refurbishing their homes.

Brace Yourself For Winter
Three pre-winter lawn care pointers Winter weather can be harsh, especially on lawns. Homeowners who spend much of spring and summer tending to their lawns may fear the impact that winter will have on their once-lush landscapes, making the fall a great time to fortify lawns against any harsh conditions to come. Homeowners must take grass type into consideration before taking steps to prepare their lawns for the winter. Some grasses are best fertilized in late-summer, while others should be fertilized in autumn. Cool-season grasses, including fescue and bluegrass, are best fertilized sometime between the months of September and November. Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda
or zoysia, should be fertilized between July and September. Once homeowners have gained a greater understanding of their lawns, they can begin exploring the various ways to prepare their lawns for whatever winter has in store. 1. Explore winterizing fertilizers. Homeowners who want to make their grasses more winter hardy can consult landscaping professionals to determine if winterizing fertilizers will work for their lawns. These specially formulated fertilizers, many of which are made exclusively for coolseason grasses, contain higher levels of potassium and lower levels of nitro-
gen than early-season fertilizers. Potassium helps strengthen and harden plants, and cool-season grasses may need extra potassium as winter settles in. Homeowners who are not sure if they should apply winterizing fertilizer can conduct soil tests to determine the potassium levels in their soil. If the test indicates the soil has sufficient potassium, then applying a winterizing fertilizer is likely unnecessary. In addition, homeowners who have fed their lawn a balance of nutrients throughout spring and summer likely will not need to apply winterizing fertilizer. 2. Get rid of fallen leaves. While fallen leaves
Preparing for the winter season Fireplaces and woodburning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire. • Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she
will be able to effectively clean the chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents. • Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years. • Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous
fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering. • Inspect the damper. A damper is a valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly.
may be integral components of idyllic autumn landscapes, leaves left on the lawn throughout the winter may lead to disease in the grass. Leaves trap moisture and block sunlight and air from reaching grass, and that can encourage the development of disease. In addition, leaves can harbor insects that also may contribute to disease. Leaves left laying on lawns for long periods of time can contribute to the same types of damage
as leaves left on the lawn throughout winter. 3. Take steps to fight snow mold. Homeowners who live in regions where snow falls into spring or where spring tends to be cold and damp may want to take steps to prevent snow mold. Gray snow mold typically looks fuzzy and gray, and lawns infested with snow mold may develop unsightly gray or brown spots indicative of dead grass. Pink snow mold may
be even worse than gray snow mold because pink mold attacks the roots as well as the leaves. To prevent snow mold, continue mowing into the fall, even as lawns grow dormant, clearing the lawn of grass clippings and leaves after each mow. Thick lawns may provide a breeding ground for snow mold, so homeowners whose lawns have a history of developing snow mold may benefit from mowing their lawns into the fall.

Address air leaks to save energy and money their homes more energy efficient. • Identify air leaks around windows and doorways. Autumn is a great time of year to identify air leaks. Fall, and particularly late fall, tends to be characterized by cold air that makes it easy to detect air leaks. Feel for leaks around windows and doorways, ideally conducting such tests on cold, windy days when you can quickly detect if air is flowing in from the outside. Leaks around windows and doors waste energy because the interior of the home is either colder (in the winter) or warmer (in the summer) than it needs to be, prompting homeowners to turn up their thermostats or rely more heavily on air
conditioning units. • Look for leaks elsewhere around the house. While windows and doorways are where many leaks are found, leaks also may be found around plumbing, electrical fixtures and dryer vents. Inspect such areas by feeling for drafts or looking for signs that insects and critters might be entering. • Look up and down. Evidence of air leaks may be noticeable on both the floor and the ceiling. Dirty spots on carpeting and the ceiling may be indicative of air leaks at interior wall/ ceiling joints and wall/ floor joists. Fixing such leaks may be as simple as applying some caulk. • Go with gaskets. The United States Department
Importance of clean gutters Every autumn, trees and shrubs take on their brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows that mark the end of the growing season. Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure. Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off. Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter. Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur. • Leaks: Water will take the path of least resistance. When clogged gutters do not allow the water to drain away properly, water will find other ways to the ground. It may work itself right into the walls and ceilings of the home. In addition to damaging walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can promote mold growth. It also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests. • Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and
other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely. • Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests. Furthermore, birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can grow unchecked. • Ice-damming: Left untreated, pooled water and leaves in gutters can freeze over. Blocked water can back up and push against the roof, lifting shingles and destroying the roof in the process. • Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and other cement areas around the home to sag and crack. Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning services to handle the job or do the job themselves. Rinse the gutters with water from the hose afterward to ensure good run-off. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. This routine maintenance can save homeowners many headaches and prevent some very expensive repairs.

of Energy recommends installing foam gaskets behind outlet and switch plates on walls. Outlets and switch boxes on exterior walls provide another place for air to leak into a home and drive up energy costs. Properly installed gaskets can cut back on air infiltration, providing an inexpensive way to save energy and money. • Cover the kitchen exhaust fans when you are not cooking. Kitchen exhaust fans can help prevent fires and unfavorable indoor air conditions when preparing meals at home. But such fans provide opportunities for air to enter a home, so make sure they are tightly closed or covered when no one is cooking in the kitchen. Air leaks around a house can waste energy and contribute to high energy bills, particularly during the winter and summer when temperatures outside tend to be
at their most extreme. Homeowners looking to reduce their energy consumption and save money
can inspect various areas of their homes for air leaks and immediately address any they discover.

Rising energy costs coupled with the continued adoption of ecofriendly lifestyles are two factors driving homeowners to seek ways to reduce energy consumption in their homes. Reducing energy consumption is reason enough for many homeowners to make changes around the house, but saving energy sometimes means saving substantial amounts of money as well. Energy-efficient appliances and eco-friendly building materials can help homeowners reduce energy consumption. Pick the right boots for Canadian winters (NC) Do you try to hold winter at bay by keeping your winter boots packed away until the first snowstorm hits? Although denying the inevitable onset of our harshest season may give you a psychological lift, experts say it’s important to get your winter footwear out and thoroughly checked over well before winter arrives with a fury. “Canadian winters are tough — frigid temperatures, ice-covered paths and endless snow and slush can cause serious harm unless you are prepared,” explains Peter Morcom, president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a Canadian certified pedorthist. “A quality pair of lined, properly fitted winter boots is essential for winter in Canada.” Although he doesn’t recommend one style or brand of boots, Morcom says these seven tips will help ensure you are wellequipped for everything winter has in store. 1. Winter footwear doesn’t last indefinitely, typically only one to three seasons. If you are using the same pair of boots as last winter, inspect them closely to make sure there are no rips or cracks that could allow water to permeate. 2. Traction is key. To
minimize slipping, select footwear that has a more aggressive tread and a sole made with softer materials such as rubber. If you have balance issues and
are concerned about falling, buy cleats that stretch over your boots for extra traction. 3. Only buy footwear that is waterproof, and
wear moisture-wicking socks to further protect your feet. Wet feet increase the risk of frostbite and fungal or bacterial infection. 4. Make sure your boots fit properly. Your feet can change size over time and footwear sizes differ from style to style, so have your feet measured every time and only buy boots that feel comfortable the first time you try them on. 5. If you spend a lot of time outside, choose a pair of boots with a colder temperature range than you need as they will provide you with extra comfort and protection. 6. Don’t buy boots that aren’t supportive. Some fashionable sheepskin styles of boots look cozy and warm but they won’t provide the support your feet and lower limbs
require. Stylish, leatherheeled boots should be kept for special occasions. 7. Don’t ask your children to wear hand-medown boots or buy boots with room for them to
grow. Boots that are too big or too small will chafe or squish their toes, which will cause blisters and rubs. Find more information at pedorthic.ca.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m fine with microchipping my pets. I have a 2-year-old collie mix, “Bard,” and a 5-year-old cat, “Millie,” and both are chipped. But I worry that if they get out of the house and get lost, I’ll have to rely on strangers getting them to a veterinarian or shelter to have their chip scanned. I’d like to take finding my pets into my own hands. — Carl G., Madison, Wisconsin DEAR CARL: With the rise of the smartphone and
an increase in small, wearable technology, you can take a more active role in finding your pets. A microchip is an important component because unlike a collar, it won’t fall off, making it the best backup if your pet is lost. However, advanced pet technology is out there, and a huge number of pet owners are taking advantage of it. The Los Angeles Times reported that 43 percent of dog owners now own an electronic tracking device, based on an APPA survey. Tracking collars like the LinkAPC sync with a smartphone app that reports your dog’s location on demand. It includes a fitness tracker. That collar will run you almost $150, but there are budget trackers like the TrackR Bravo, a small device which costs
just under $30 and attaches to your dog’s collar. Pet owner networking apps also are popular, allowing neighbors and friends to connect with
each other through their pets. They can serve as places to ask for help in finding a lost pet, essentially sending out an APB to other owners and there-
by reaching much farther than just posting “lost pet” fliers around the neighborhood. Adding any of these products or apps can give
you greater control over locating your pets should they get out. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

• It was Irish author and editor Robert Lynd who made the following sage observation: “History may be read as the story of the magnificent rearguard action fought during several thousand years by dogma against curiosity.” • Historians say that the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating dates back to the early European tradition of mumming, when costumed dancers would go door to door to perform choreographed routines, as well as songs and plays, in exchange for treats. • You might be surprised to learn that on a per-capita basis, Finland has more heavy-metal bands than any other country on Earth. • If you’re fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Argentina, you’ll almost certainly make a stop in Buenos Aires, the capital. While you’re there, keep an eye out for a mobile work by Raul Lemesoff. The artist, known for his eccentricity, converted a 1979 Ford Falcon into a kind of a tank — it even has a turret that swivels. Instead of soldiers and armaments, however, this tank carries books on shelves both inside and outside the vehicle. Lemesoff drives his “Weapon of Mass Instruction” through the city streets, delivering free books to all comers. His only requirement?

You probably weren’t aware, though, that the novel was such an instant and ongoing success that Burroughs wrote 24 sequels. • In a recent survey of pet owners, 43 percent of respondents said that they’d be eating healthier themselves if they ate the same thing they fed their pets. Protect the planet this Halloween In the minds of children and even many adults, Halloween is one of the best days of the year. Youngsters love to dress up as monsters, beloved television characters or superheroes in the pur-
suit of candy, while their parents often enjoy some Halloween fun of their own. Celebrants might not have the environment in mind come October 31, but there are a handful
The effects of breathing ozone Ozone, the main ingredient in smog, is a harmful air pollutant that can have negative effects on human health. Breathing ozone can be especially harmful to children, whose lungs are still developing. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that children’s susceptibility to the harmful effects of ozone is greater because they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. So that means children who breathe in air that contains ozone are getting a higher dose of that ozone for their weight than adults. Children also tend to spend more time outdoors than adults, increasing the likelihood that they will suffer the harmful effects of breathing ozone. When ozone is breathed in, it harms the respiratory system by inflaming cells that line the upper airways and the lungs. The EPA notes that this damage is similar to the damage done to skin as a result of sunburn. Breathing ozone can make it more difficult for people of all ages to breathe deeply and vigorously while also causing a sore or scratchy throat. Asthma sufferers may even experience more frequent

attacks when breathing ozone than they would when breathing cleaner air. And according to the EPA, ozone might still be damaging the lungs after symptoms have subsided.

beloved dish even more delicious. • Exchange costumes with neighbors. Rather than buying new costumes each year, parents can save money and help the planet by exchanging costumes each year. Halloween costumes are typically worn just once, which is wasteful when considering the amount of materials, energy and packaging required to produce and sell such costumes. Homemade costumes also are less wasteful, as parents won’t have to package such getups in potentially harmful plastic. • Clean up throughout the evening. Trick-or-
treaters are many things, but are not likely to be conscious of the trash they produce as they sneak candy bars here or there during their travels. Candy wrappers and other litter can quickly accumulate on Halloween. Unless this trash is promptly picked up, it may ultimately find its way into drainage systems and nearby waterways. Sweep up throughout the evening to keep lawns and driveways clean and protect the environment. • Add pumpkins to compost piles. Pumpkins, and jack-o’-lanterns in particular, are symbolic of Halloween. But pumpkins deteriorate rather

of opportunities for all those participating in Halloween festivities to make their celebrations more eco-friendly. • Hand out locallyproduced treats. Candied apples can be found at Halloween parties, and some people even give them out to trick-or-treaters. When buying apples that will ultimately be transformed into candied confections, buy your apples from local farmers. Locally produced apples did not have to travel far, reducing the fuel needed to go from farm to table. And locally produced apples may taste fresher than those shipped from far away, making this

quickly, and homeowners might be quick to simply toss them into the garbage with the rest of their trash. But pumpkins can make great additions to compost piles. Before adding pumpkins to your pile, remove any seeds from inside the pumpkin, as lingering seeds may germinate within the pile. In addition, remove any decorations and lighting from the pumpkin, and do not add pumpkins that have been coated in preserving sealant to your compost pile. Halloween might not inspire celebrants to be eco-friendly, but there are ways to have fun and protect the planet at the same time.

Mayumi no Roru Cabegi (Mayumi’s Cabbage Rolls) Serves 4 as a main course or 8 as an appetizer •1 head green cabbage, outer layer of leaves discarded •5 green onions, including tender green tops, thinly sliced •2 slices white bread, torn into small pieces •1⁄4 pound shrimp, peeled, deveined and chopped into small pieces •1⁄4 pound ground pork
•1-1⁄2 teaspoons ginger juice (see note) •1⁄2 teaspoon salt, plus more for seasoning •1⁄4 teaspoon ground pepper •1 tablespoon sake •5 cups reduced-fat, low-sodium canned chicken broth •1⁄4 cup tomato ketchup •5 tablespoons mayonnaise Fill a large pot threefourths full of water and bring to a boil. Add the cabbage, submerging it in the water. When the water returns to a boil, remove the cabbage from the pot with tongs and place it in a colander to drain. Reserve 5 tablespoons of the boiling water for the sauce (you may not use all of it). When the cabbage is cool enough to handle, carefully peel away the leaves without tearing them. As the leaves are removed, place them on paper towels to absorb the excess water. You will need 8 large leaves without rips, tears or heavy spines. If you can salvage

Stuffed cabbage can sometimes be a heavy dish that, while delicious, makes its fans feel very full. However, the following recipe for “Mayumi no Roru Cabegi (Mayumi’s Cabbage Rolls)” from Amy Kaneko’s “Let’s Cook Japanese Food!” (Chronicle Books) calls for the rolls to be made smaller than normal. That makes the meal feel less heavy while also cutting down on cooking time, which is sure to please time-strapped home cooks.

more leaves, do so, in case you have extra filling. In a bowl, combine the green onions, bread, shrimp, pork, ginger juice, 1⁄2 teaspoon salt, pepper, and sake. Using your hands, mix the ingredients together until evenly distributed. In a large saucepan, heat the chicken broth over medium-high heat.
While the broth is heating, prepare the rolls: Position a leaf with the stem facing you. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons of the filling in the middle of the leaf, bring the edge nearest you over the filling to cover it, fold in both sides, and then roll up the leaf. Secure the roll with a toothpick, being careful not to tear the cabbage leaf. Repeat to make 7 more rolls. At this point, the broth should be at a slow boil. Carefully add the cabbage rolls to the pan. They usually fit in a single layer, with just 1 or 2 rolls on top. Cover the pan with a drop-lid (see note below),
and cook until the cabbage leaves are very tender but not disintegrating, 30 to 35 minutes. To test, prod a roll or two with a fork or chopstick; the leaf should be very easily pierced. Taste the broth and season with salt if needed. In a small bowl, stir together the ketchup, 3 tablespoons of the reserved cabbage cooking water, and the mayonnaise until well combined. If you have ended up with extra filling and the leaves to wrap it, you will want the remaining 2 tablespoons water for mixing up extra sauce. To serve, place 2 cab-

wine) •1/2 cup (125 mL) chicken stock •1 tsp (5 mL) Dijon mustard •Fresh thyme •Salt and pepper In a shallow bowl, mix flour with salt and pepper. Lightly dredge loin chops in flour. In a large frying pan over medium-high heat add olive oil. When oil is hot, add loin chops to pan. Sear on either side for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside. In the same pan, add
butter and mushrooms. Sauté mushrooms until liquid is released, about 5 minutes. Add shallots and garlic. Cook 1 to 2 minutes, or until fragrant. Slowly add wine to deglaze pan, using spatula to scrape it clean. Add chicken stock, mustard and seared loin chops. Continue to simmer, stirring frequently, until sauce is slightly thickened. Sprinkle with fresh thyme and serve over hot mashed potatoes. Find more impressive weeknight meals online at mushrooms.ca.
bage rolls in a shallow bowl, add broth to each bowl to reach about halfway up the sides of the rolls, and drizzle with the sauce. (Or, if you want to the serve the rolls as appetizers, divide the rolls, broth and sauce among 8 bowls.) Serve immediately. Note: To extract ginger juice, you don’t need to peel the ginger. Simply grate it and then squeeze the pulp in your hand to release the juice. A 31⁄2inch piece of fresh ginger yields about 2 teaspoons juice. Note: Known as an “otoshi-buta,” a drop-lid has a small wooden handle and fits just inside of a pot rim. It floats directly on the simmering foods, keeping them from moving around, helping to spread the flavors of the liquid evenly, and preventing the liquid from cooking away.
