Feeding the way to increased forage yields Charlotte Ward, PAg Regional Forage Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Yorkton Regional Office Forage production is often limited by soil nutrients. A planned extensive winter feeding program can be used to introduce nutrients into a forage stand. Research from 20032005 at the Western Beef Development Center (WBDC) has shown that extensively or in-field winter feeding cattle can be both practical and economical. Bale processing, bale grazing, swath grazing and stubble/crop residue grazing are extensive feeding systems that have two big advantages: 1) they are proven to decrease the cost of winter feeding per animal per day and 2) they increase the efficiency of putting nutrients back on
the land. The first research from WBDC showed that extensively bale grazing or bale processing on perennial pasture decreased the cost of winter feeding the cow to approximately 2/3 of the cost of traditional pen feeding. The second part of the study evaluated the efficiency of nutrient capture. Both bale feeding and bale processing increased soil nitrogen levels 2.5 to 3 times greater than spreading manure from pen feeding. Forage yields were 3 to 4 times greater on areas with extensive feeding compared to areas with no winter feeding or manure application. While we often focus on the cost per cow per day to feed cows, it is the increase in the value of nutrient cycling and capture in forage production that is often overlooked as a significant benefit to extensive winter feeding. It has large implications
for fertility management on perennial forage stands. Bales and even feed grains have a replacement value of commercial fertilizer in many situations. The Ministry of Agriculture has developed a Forage and Crop Nutrient Calculator available on their website at http://publications.gov. sk.ca/details.cfm?p=76536. The calculator compares the value of nitrogen, phosphorus as phosphate, potassium as potash, and sulfur in various feed stuffs relative to the nutrient value of commercial fertilizers. For example, one tonne of alfalfa-grass hay (dry matter) will contain on average 49 pounds of nitrogen, 9.5 pounds of phosphate, 44 pounds of potash and 4 pounds of sulfur. Using current fall delivered fertilizer prices, this equates to a nutrient value of $39.54 per tonne
CO poisoning info Many people are aware of the threat posed by carbon monoxide, or CO. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 430 people die from accidental CO poisoning in the United States each year, while the Canada Safety Council notes that carbon monoxide is the leading cause of fatal poisonings throughout North America. The CDC points out that instances of CO poisoning are entirely preventable, which might surprise many of the estimated tens of thousands of people in the United States who visit emergency rooms to be treated for CO poisoning each year. Learning to recognize signs of CO poisoning and how to prevent it can help people avoid its harmful effects and potentially save lives. Recognizing CO poisoning The National Center for Environmental Health says that breathing CO can cause a variety of symp-
toms, including headache, dizziness, vomiting, or nausea. Infants, the elderly and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or breathing problems are more likely to get sick from CO exposure than children, adults and people without the aforementioned conditions. How can I prevent CO poisoning? Even those people who do not lose their lives to moderate or severe CO poisoning can suffer longterm health consequences, including an increased risk of heart disease, as a result of their exposure. So it behooves everyone to take steps to prevent CO poisoning from occurring. • Do not run a motor vehicle, generator, pressure washer or any gasolinepowered engine within 20 feet of an open window, door or vent. The exhaust from such items can vent into enclosed areas, increasing the risk of CO exposure. • Do not leave motor
vehicles running in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces, such as a garage. • Do not run generators, pressure washers or gasoline-powered inside basements, garages or other enclosed structures, even if windows are open. • Do not operate charcoal grills, hibachis, lanterns or portable camping stoves indoors or inside tents or campers. CO poisoning can cause very serious consequences, including death. Fortunately, all instances of CO poisoning can be prevented.
of forage dry matter or $21.35 of nutrients in a 1400 pound bale at 15% moisture. Barley greenfeed has slightly higher nutrient value at $40.88 per tonne of dry matter while cereal straw contains considerably less nutrients at $19.36 per tonne of dry matter. The potential of feeding grains should not be overlooked for their fertility value either. Oats has a nutrient value of $49.63 per tonne or $0.40 per bushel. It is long established that the cow retains approximately 10% of the nitrogen and 20% of the phosphorus she consumes. This means that there is a significant amount of nutrients being deposited in the urine and feces that will be available for nutrient cycling. Results from the WBDC study found that 30 to 45% of added nitrogen and 21 to 32% of phosphorus from feed and bedding was captured and recovered in forage production with in-field feeding. In contrast, only 5 to 9% and 3 to 5% of nitrogen and phosphorus, respect-
ively, was captured and recovered from manure applications. While extensive feeding was a far cry from 100% nutrient cycling and retention in forage production, feed stuffs can be a significant source of nutrients and fertility. The winter of 2017-18 may be an opportunity to place nutrients in areas of low forage production. Purchased feedstuffs are often valued based solely on how they meet the cow’s requirements. The value of the nutrients that will be cycled back into the soil should also be considered as well. For those producers who are not utilizing
commercial fertilizers on their land to increase forage production, I challenge them to consider how their feeding program and feed placement can be used as a source of soil fertility. Thus, the cost of purchasing feed sources can then be looked at as the value of purchasing and importing soil nutrients as opposed to simply feeding the animal. For more information on the impact of winter feeding on forage fertility, please contact Charlotte Ward in the Yorkton Regional office at 306-7861608 or email charlotte. ward@gov.sk.ca.

Yorktonite aims for pageant glory By Sean Mott Staff Writer A former Yorktonite is taking her knack for glamour and eloquence to the international stage. Holly Weselowski is heading to China to compete in the annual Mrs. Globe pageant in December. “I’ve never been to Asia,” Weselowski said. “I’m very excited to meet other women.” Last March, Weselowski won the Mrs. Canada Globe 2017 title at a competition in Regina. Shenzhen, a city in the Guangdong Province in China. The event runs from Dec. 4-13, with the full pageant on Dec. 12. Weseloowski, who now lives in Saskatoon, is the only Canadian delegate. “I’m most excited about getting onstage and representing what Canada’s all about,” Weselowski said. Weselowski, who works full-time as a registered nurse, has been competing in pageants for years. She also has a background in body-building. She won the World Bikini Championship at an Ultimate Fitness Events (UFE) show last year. She’ll be defending that title in Toronto this year before her trip to China. “There’s pressure, but I’m used to it,” she said. Weselowski likes to be involved in her community. She finds that her pageantry titles allow her to make a big impact in fields she cares about. “I’m passionate about healthcare,” she said. “With [the Mrs. Canada Globe] title, it’s easy to fundraise.” At the Mrs. Globe pageant, Weselowski will compete in several categories, including a swimsuit round and an evening gown round. Weselowski is most excited for the speech portion of the show. “My speech will make or break the competition for me,” she said. “It’s about empowering women.” Women from over 80 countries will be competing in China. The contest, which began in 1996, has seen winners from America, Lebanon, Spain, and elsewhere, but never from Canada. Weselowski could make history in December. “I would be in heaven [if I won],” she said. The pageant will be broadcast on payper-view.

Family room opened at Jowsey House The new Yorkton Hyundai Room was officially opened Monday at Jowsey House in the city. The room was made possible through efforts of the Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer program, thanks to funding from Yorkton Hyundai. Yorkton Hyundai, in conjunction with Whitewood Dodge and Moosomin Dodge made a donation of $15,000 towards the Close Cuts Local Cancer Initiatives Program earlier this summer. The program aims to enhance the lives of local cancer patients. The money was raised through a donation on car sales, a car show and barbecues. At the time of the cheque presentation Leone Ottenbreit said the money would go to completing a family room at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre as part of the palliative care initiative. The family room will be located between the two palliative care rooms as a place for families to find a quiet spot. The room which opened Monday includes a fridge, coffeemaker, television and comfortable chairs and is a place for families to find some quiet alone time. “It’s a place to relax and be on their own,” said Ottenbreit. “… It’s a more home like experience.” The room was termed “very important for families going through

Q: Please give me some scoop on “The X-Files.” The wait is killing me! — Valerie B., Toledo, Ohio A: You and me both, Valerie. Well, we learned some more info about the upcoming 11th season of the what’s-old-isnew-again hit alien/sci-fi series, which premieres on Fox in January. First of all, remember that episode from the first goround that creeped out everyone, “Home”? (Look it up if you don’t, because
I can’t stomach rehashing it here.) Well, the actress who played the under-thebed mom in that episode will be featured as four different characters (two of which are male) in an episode this next sea-
son. Also, as I mentioned before, this 10-episode season will consist of eight stand-alone mysteries and two mythology installments. We will get an episode that deals with the backstory of the Cigarette Smoking Man (played by William B. Davis), as well as one that delves into the life of Mitch Pileggi’s Skinner, who also will be featured more heavily this season. The question on everyone minds is where is William — Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully’s (Gillian Anderson) son — and does he have plans to destroy mankind? The truth is out there ... come January. Q: I’ve been waiting and waiting for news about
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there a cure for keloids? My husband is 56 and has several keloids on his body, but there is one on his chest that has gotten considerably larger over the years and causes the most problems. He has experienced pain and discomfort, and it also bleeds at times. My husband would prefer not to have surgery. He was born with a keloid on his ear. At a very young age it was operated on, and it returned larger in size. He has tried numerous types of remedies, but none has prevented the keloid from growing or bleeding. — J.B. ANSWER: A keloid (from a Greek word meaning “tumor-like”) is a com-
plication of scar tissue. In some people, when the skin heals from a cut or a burn, the healing cells keep growing, creating a variably sized, disfiguring, sometimes painful lesion called a keloid. The best treatment in people who are predisposed to keloids is to avoid them by avoiding any unnecessary surgery (including ear and other body piercings). Once a keloid has formed, there are several possible treatments. Unfortunately, the longer a keloid has been there, the harder it is to treat. I have seen great results from silicone gel sheeting. This is particularly effective when used immediately after surgery, but may have some effectiveness on your husband’s chest keloid. Another potentially effective treatment is injection of steroids, which help flatten and shrink keloids up to 75 percent of the time. DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a fall on ice and suffered a severe concussion.
I was unconscious for several minutes. At the hospital, I had a CT scan, but there was no damage. Two months later, I had an episode where I became disoriented and the room was spinning. I was taken to the hospital, given Antivert without success and kept overnight. A physical therapist came the next day, did some vestibular rehab that helped some, and I continued it at home as needed. The episodes are getting worse, and neither the Antivert nor the exercises are helping. Could this be due to the fall? My ENT says no. — G.M. ANSWER: You clearly have vertigo, but whether it is due to the fall isn’t clear. Certainly, people with postconcussion syndrome get dizziness and vertigo, but in most cases I have seen, it starts soon after the trauma: Two months is longer than I have seen. Headaches also are common in postconcussion syndrome, but their absence doesn’t mean your vertigo is NOT due to the fall.

“Psych.” I heard a while ago that they were bringing it back, but since then, crickets. — Elly W., via email A: The cast of “Psych” will be back — for a reunion holiday movie. As series star Dule Hill announced via video at the New York Comic Con, the much-anticipated movie will premiere Dec. 7 on USA Network. “Psych: The Movie” reunites the cast of the original series, and also welcomes aboard newcomer John Cena. Fans at Comic Con got to preview the first 20 minutes of the movie at the “Psych” panel, and they were not disappointed by the tease. Q: I’ve been bingeMeclizine (Antivert) is an antihistamine commonly used for vertigo; however, prolonged use (more than a few days) prevents the brain from adapting to the changes in the balance system that caused the vertigo. Thus, it’s concerning that you may still be taking it. I have seen many people taking meclizine long term and having persistent vertigo. Vestibular rehab is the best treatment we have for vertigo. If it’s not working, it may be time to re-evaluate and make sure there isn’t another cause for the vertigo. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. watching “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce” on Netflix, and I love the actor who plays badass pastry chef Scott. Can you tell me more about him and where else I can see him? — Gina T., via email A: Forty-year-old British actor Will Kemp had his breakout role in “Van Helsing,” with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale back in 2004, and has been working steadily ever since. The actor, who also is a dancer, co-starred in “Step Up 2: The Streets” and Lifetime’s “Petals on the Wind,” both roles showcasing his classical dancing training. Will also played Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley in the CW’s
historical-fiction series “Reign,” which wrapped up its fourth and final season this summer. Next up, he stars with my favorite kickass actress Maggie Q (have you seen her in “Designated Survivor”?) in the feature film “Slumber,” a supernatural thriller. The film centers on a sleep doctor (played by Maggie) who tries to protect a family from a demon that feeds on people in their nightmares. Catch it in theaters starting Dec. 1. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Girls Trip” (R) — When Dina (Regina Hall), a motivational writer on the verge of next-level success, books a speaking engagement in the Big Easy, it seems like the right time for her and her college gal pals to rediscover their friendships and blow off a little steam at the Essence Festival. But after bestie Sasha (Queen Latifah) gets an incriminating photo of Dina’s husband, the only thing these women are discovering is their wild side — and what a ride. Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish (in an exceptional breakout performance) round out the group, and it’s crude and raunchy and absolutely what you need right now. This movie is chockablock with hot guys and musician cameos, but it’s the bonds of sisterhood running deep that makes this a ladies’ adventure done right. “ S p i d e r- M a n : Homecoming” (PG-13) — Tom Holland follows up his adorable debut as Spider-Man (introduced in “Captain America: Civil War”) with a solo turn in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” the newest feather in the hat of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Under the tutelage of Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), the young buck must

Tom Holland in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” hone his superhero craft and prepare to face a new threat in villain Vulture (Michael Keaton). This reboot has everything you’re looking for: witty banter, exciting action, death-defying special effects and a super-cute new Spidey in Holland, who maintains the innocence, cockiness and highschool angst of our hero without being overly sappy or beating you over the head with a merchandise message. You’ll be caught in the web of fun from start to finish. “Shot Caller” (R) — Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”) stars as Jacob Harlan, a studious stockbroker who is
sent to prison after a DUI accident takes the life of his best friend. He loses his home and family and is forced to confront what it will take to survive in prison. His subsequent transformation from a clean-cut, wide-eyed vanilla pudding of a man to a hardened, tattooed killer called “Money” is unnerving. After his debt to society is paid, he must then begin to repay his debt to the prison society that kept him alive, even as he longs to return to the life he once led. This rich, unsettling study of the penal system and its long-reaching effects comes from director Ric Roman Waugh. “Landline” (R) —
Fidelity, family and the 1990s figure heavily in this dramedy by director Gillian Robespierre (“Obvious Child”) set in 1995 Manhattan. Twentysomething Dana (Jenny Slate) and teenage sister Ali (Abby Quinn) uncover clues that their father (John Turturro) is having an affair. Their attempt to search for answers without arousing the suspicion of their mother (Edie Falco) leads them through a meandering dissection of family relationships and the significance of sex and love, all the while relying heavily on the nostalgia of pre-social media-era conventions of payphones, floppy disks, “Must See TV” and more. Brace Yourself For Winter
What to do if you lose power when it’s cold out You’re watching your favourite show on a cold winter evening, when all of a sudden the TV shuts off — as do all the lights in your home. If a power outage were to occur when it’s freezing outside, would you be prepared? Read on to learn how to react in such a situation. First, make sure your
home isn’t the only one affected by the outage. Then, try to reach your electric provider to find out how long they expect the blackout to last. If you’re going to have to wait several hours before power is restored, proceed as follows. • Unplug all of your electronic devices and
household appliances • Leave only one light on inside and outside your home • Turn all thermostats down to the lowest setting • Don’t open any doors or windows • Put warm clothes on, light some candles and try to distract yourself Make sure you’re well
prepared to deal with a prolonged power outage: 1. Purchase a space heater or generator and use it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Prepare an emergency kit containing what you need to survive for three days (water, food, clothing, a battery-pow-
Five ways to ensure optimal visibility It’s no secret that our eyes play a crucial role in navigating the road safely. In fact, 90 per cent of the information we need to drive responsibly comes through visual stimuli. All the more reason to see clearly, right? This winter, benefit from optimal visibility (and reduce the risk of accidents!) by following these tips:
before hitting the road. Also, make sure to defrost your windshield wipers and unstick them from the glass. 3. Make sure that your windshield wipers are in good condition. Do they leave streaks behind or make odd noises while operating? Are they adapted to local winter road con-
ditions? It’s recommended to replace your windshield wipers every fall. 4. Check if you have enough windshield fluid before heading out. Keep an extra gallon in your car, as well as a shovel, a broom and an ice scraper to remove snow and ice that accumulate while driving.

Brace Yourself For Winter
Winter driving: five tire safety considerations
Good tires that are adapted to winter conditions as well as your vehicle are essential to stay safe on the road throughout the cold season. Here are five points to consider when it comes time to tire up your car for the winter: 1. Even if there’s no snow in the forecast, it’s a good idea to install winter tires on your car once temperatures reach around 7 °C. Anything colder than that will have a hardening effect on the rubber
of summer tires, thus reducing their traction. Winter tires, on the other hand, are designed to maintain optimal flexibility — even on days where the thermometer plummets to -40 °C. 2. Your tires should have a tread depth of at least 4.8 millimetres. If they don’t, or if they’re almost worn to the limit, replace them without delay. 3. It’s essential that all four tires on your car be identical and of the cor-
rect size. They should also ideally show roughly the same level of wear. If they don’t, install the leastworn tires in the back to maximize your vehicle’s stability. 4. There’s more than one type of winter tire: some are designed for snowy conditions, while others perform better on ice. Make sure that you choose your tires according to the road conditions you’re most likely to encounter. 5. Tire pressure great-
How to prepare your vehicle for storage
Are you thinking about putting your vehicle in storage this winter? Continue reading to learn the proper procedure! First, clean your car inside and out to get rid of all organic materials and dirt that could lead to rust. Next, dry it thoroughly to prevent moisture from setting in. You should also grease the door hinges, the latch on the hood and the rubber around the sunroof with an appropriate type of lubricant. If your car
Did you know? At just 50 km/h, the impact of a crash is comparable to falling from a four-storey building. It also multiplies the weight of everything in the vehicle by at least 20, meaning that a 70-kilogram passenger becomes a 1,400-kilogram projectile. Always fasten your seat belt: it cuts your risk of severe injury and death in half.
has leather seats, consider using a special protectant to keep them in good condition. Furthermore, the engine oil and filter should both be changed before you place your vehicle in storage for the winter. Make sure to verify your car’s fluid levels, and fill your gas tank three-quarters of the way to stave off condensation and rust. You’ll ideally want to add a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel from degrading and oxidizing during prolonged periods of inactivity. Once in storage, wait until the engine has completely cooled down, and
then start it back up for a few seconds (not more than 30) to allow all components to be properly lubricated. Next, disconnect the battery and store it in a mild, dry area. Note: it’s recommended to recharge the battery at least once during the winter. You’ll also want to keep your car elevated on bearing blocks to preserve the condition of the tires. Otherwise, they can wear easily beneath the car’s weight, especially if they start losing air. Finally, if you cover your car to protect it from dust, choose a breathable fabric to avoid moisture from forming and getting trapped.

Of course, putting your car in storage until the return of warmer days is the best way to keep it safe from winter’s harsh effects, but if that isn’t an option, here are some ways you can help prevent rust from taking hold in the cold: 1. Have your car professionally rustproofed. This is especially recommended if you frequently park indoors. Drastic temperature variations, espe-

thank you! 3. Protect the body. Install mud flaps, a grille guard (clean it often to avoid an accumulation of road salt, which could scratch the paint), or clear plastic strips to protect the lower body frame. 4. Wash your car often. It’s important to clean your vehicle periodically during the winter — even though the results won’t last long! — to get rid of calcium deposits and other dirt. A dirty car is more likely to rust. Make sure to thoroughly dry everything off, and avoid washing your car when temperatures fall below
Track down the (hidden) causes of a cold house in the winter Do your teeth chatter when you get out of bed in the morning? Do you have to wear two pairs of socks and thick slippers so your feet don’t freeze on your icy floors? If your heating bills are increasingly expensive and you’re seriously considering a move down south to escape the winter, try to determine — and neutralize — the cause of your thermal discomfort before making a hasty decision.
You should also consider replacing your windows with more energy-efficient models. Simply call a window company in your area to benefit from perfect installation and the best possible after-sale service. Is your home well insulated? To preserve your home’s heat (and save your money), start thinking insulation. The areas
where warm air leaks out are mostly found in attics and around foundations. Have them professionally insulated and you’ll really feel the difference. Another simple yet smart thing you can do is insulating electrical outlets on all exterior walls. You can buy insulating kits designed just for this in hardware stores. Practical tip: leave your curtains and blinds open
to act fast: the procedure requires outdoor temperatures above 10 °C to be successful.

professional mechanic. He or she will assess the condition of your vehicle and perform any minor repairs before the winter worsens the wear.
Vehicle checks Make sure that you have enough air in your tires, that your windshield wipers are in good condition and that your car battery isn’t corroded. Next, test your heating and defrosting systems, as well as the headlights and blinkers, and make sure to lubricate the locks. Once you’ve performed the necessary vehicle checks, top up all fluids
Equipment checks Always be prepared for the unexpected! Make sure to keep an extra gallon of antifreeze and windshield fluid in your car. But that’s not all! You should also have an emergency survival kit that contains a shovel, an ice scraper, a broom, jumper cables, a towing cable, warm clothing, non-perishable foods, emergency flares and a flashlight. Lastly, take a

Properly maintained gas fireplace No matter what type of heating you use during the winter, you definitely don’t want it to let you down on a freezing day — or night! If you own a fireplace that runs on propane or natural gas, know that your unit should be inspected and cleaned every year. The main reasons for this are outlined below. Performance and longevity Here are some of the instant benefits of cleaning a gas fireplace: • Ensures optimal performance • Reduces the risk of failure and breakdown • Limits heat loss • Preserves its appearance • Protects from fire hazards • Prolongs its life expectancy • Reduces harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide Inspection and maintenance As you can see, investing in the maintenance of your gas fireplace makes sense. During the technician’s visit, he or she will: • Adjust the thermocouple and thermopile • Calculate and adjust the gas pressure

Are we ever truly “Gone with the Wind”? Take, for instance, Vivian Leigh, who won an Oscar in 1939 for playing Scarlett O’Hara in the classic Civil War film. She was in Hollywood keeping an eye on her partner, Laurence Olivier, while he was at MGM making “Wuthering Heights” with Merle Oberon. She won a second Oscar for playing Blanche Dubois in Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire”
(1951). Vivian Leigh died July 8, 1967, at the age of 53, from tuberculosis, and her grandchildren, who have waited 50 years to auction off her personal effects, at Southerby’s in London, say they did it to ensure her memory lives on. Some 1,400 bidders from 52 countries came to own a piece of her past. A gold ring, given to her by former husband Laurence Olivier, to whom she was married from 1940-1960,
sold for $50,000. The size M 1/2 ring bore the inscription “Laurence Olivier Vivian Eternally.” A personal copy of “Gone with the Wind,” given to her and autographed by the author, Margaret Mitchell, sold for $67,000. An original painting, painted and given to her by Sir Winston Churchill, sold for $855,075. In all, the auction raised more than $3 million to ensure her grandchildren live on ... in style!

Let’s pair up, everybody! Sounds like we might be on a basketball court doing drills. Or maybe lining up for recess. Remember second grade?
The game has changed — all of them — and it’s now up to ownership to understand the risks that fans are now being subjected to for no apparent reason. When slap shots started to dent people’s heads in the NHL, things like helmets and plexiglass came into vogue. It took a few deaths before baseball moved to wearing helmets at bat. Football is struggling to figure out how to protect its players, but the NBA’s plexiglass backboards have worked pretty well insofar as not obstructing a fan’s view or sending a splinter into someone’s arm. But we have a problem in Major League Baseball. Times have changed, and the danger that modern athletes wielding supercharged bats at superfast balls is literally ruining lives. A Cubs fan is suing because he took a foul off his eyeball, blinding him and subjecting him to a life of migraines. A little girl was smashed in the face at a Yankees game during the pennant race. Busted bats are stabbing people in the stands. Hey, baseball, this has got to stop. The game has fundamentally changed. Baseball is now a power game where seemingly everybody is swinging maple bats and pitchers are blowing 100 mph-plus fastballs with astonishing regularity. This was never the case before. Fans used to cheer bunts. Slow balls covered in tobacco spit were splattering off of catcher’s gloves. There wasn’t even a net behind home plate. It was, literally a different ballgame. Then in the 1980s, strikeout king Nolan Ryan was clocked throwing faster than anyone ever before by judges at the Guinness Book of World Records. By the ‘90s, he was still throwing 100 mph on the
Lots of things we do and use every day such as clothing and accessories come in pairs, and kids become aware of the combinations at a very young age. Even 3- and 4-yearolds like to help sort socks. As children grow, they become more skillful at distinguishing things that are alike and different. No wonder that matching games like Old Maid, Concentration and domimound as pitchers like Greg Maddux posted ERAs that rivaled Cy Young’s. An anomaly would be a guy like Mark Wohlers, Kyle Farnsworth and Neftali Perez ... guys who could throw 100 mph with regularity but had a hard time keeping the ball over the plate and in the park. Today, that’s not the case. Seemingly everyone and their little brother throws 100-plus mph. Take Luis Severino for the Yankees, throwing 103-mph fastballs after 130 pitches in the playoffs this season, only to give way to relievers who also threw 100-plus mph fastballs. A deflection is enough to maim anyone in the stands for life. Yet baseball, soooo open to change (sarcasm), can’t seem to figure out how to protect fans. A guy is going blind, babies are getting smashed to the face, but baseball is worried that netting will “ruin the view.” Here’s a clue for you owners: plexiglass. The NHL figured that out decades ago. Guess what? That won’t ruin the view, and it will solve your problems and probably save lives as players get bigger and stronger each passing year. When Todd Frazier ripped that foul ball with an exit velocity of something like 108 mph into a toddler’s face, baseball players literally put their hands to their mouth, took a knee and cried. Do I even need to say it? THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. Fix it before someone fixes it for you in a court of law. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

noes are favorites from generation to generation. Here are a pair of activities for adults and kids who enjoy matching things up. First find a partner, because in both activities you will play in pairs. DRAWING IN PAIRS Each member of the pair will need some paper and a marker or pencil. Sitting back to back, one person draws a simple object, such as a car, house or baseball glove, and gives his or her partner directions on how to draw the same thing. The goal of the activity is to provide enough explanation (without saying what the object is) so that when you’re done, you’ll have a pair of drawings that might be identical, very similar or, in some cases,
Extra idea: Ask your kids to think of things that are referred to as a “pair” even though they are really one item. For example, a pair of pants, scissors, eyeglasses, binoculars, pliers, shorts, tights, earbuds, etc.

celebrated Halloween in 2016. Total spending for the holiday reached more than $8.4 billion, which was an all-time record. • Around 65 percent of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween, including getting dressed up or handing out candy. The U.S. Census Bureau says 41.2 million trick-or-treaters are children between the ages of five and 14. • The National Retail Federation says 70 percent of Americans hand out candy, spending around $25 per person on sweets. • The amount of children in Canada participating in trick-or-treating was up 1.4 percent between 2015 and 2016 — totalling 3,870,938, according to Statistics Canada. • Roughly $418.8 million was spent on candy, confectionery and snack foods at large retailers in Canada in October 2015. • According to a survey conducted by RetailMeNot, the average Canadian plans to spend $178 on Halloween. • Many people associate Halloween with children, but the day gives everyone the chance to dress up. The NRF estimates that Americans will spend more money on adult costumes than those for children. Witches, pirates, vampires, Batman, and cats are the most popular adult costumes. • Halloween is celebrated in many different countries. In addition to the United States and Canada, areas of Europe, Asia and Latin America have their own Halloween celebrations.

Benefits of enjoying breakfast for dinner A sweet stack of pancakes, a plate of delectable French toast or a hearty omelette are just a few breakfast table favorites. These comfort foods enjoyed at home or at diners across the country are the very reasons why many people consider breakfast, long touted as the most important meal of the day, their favorite meal. Breakfast foods need not be relegated to mornings and mornings alone. In fact, traditional breakfast foods can make for great lunches and dinners as well. They also may be the centerpiece when
entertaining guests. According to a national poll conducted by ORC International and Krusteaz, makers of premium baking mixes, 90 percent of Americans say they eat breakfast for dinner, with more than half of respondents enjoying breakfast night dinners once a month or more. It’s a family-friendly trend, as breakfast foods can often be whipped up in minutes, making them ideal dinners for busy families. Explore these many benefits of digging into breakfast throughout the day.
• Affordability of ingredients: Bread, eggs and milk are mainstays at the breakfast table. Such foods are relatively inexpensive compared to seafood, meat and poultry. Anyone on a budget can save by enjoying breakfast for dinner once per week. Many egg-based dishes can be put together for around $5 per meal, provided herbs and seasonings are already in the pantry. • Versatility of menu options: Baking mixes can provide the basis for waffles, pancakes, crêpes, muffins, scones, biscuits, and much more. Options
are even more numerous when such mixes are paired with eggs in different presentations, be it fried eggs, eggs Benedict or poached eggs. • Ideal for picky eaters: Children love breakfast for dinner in large part because the foods are familiar and friendly. When families can’t decide on what to make because kids are unlikely to eat what’s available, consider breakfast. • Faster than delivery: Marie Claire says that breakfast dishes can be
cooked in as little as 10 minutes, which is less time (and money) than it will take for pizza or Chinese food to be delivered. When a fast meal is needed, breakfast foods reign supreme. • Variety of flavors: Breakfast foods can be customized according to one’s palette. A filled crêpe can be savory or sweet. The same can be said for pancakes. Add cooked ground sausage to the batter and serve with a side of grilled peppers for a savory twist. • Introduce more fruits and vegetables: Reluctant
Caring for dentures improves oral health Proper dental care and oral hygiene is essential at all stages in life, even for people who have dentures, partials or implants. People with dentures must recognize that oral hygiene protects their dentures as well as their mouths. According to the American College of Prosthodontists, 35 million Americans do not have any teeth, while 11 percent of the population requires the use of a complete denture. In addition, 5 percent of the U.S. population wears a partial denture. The Canadian Denture & Implant Centres says that 16 percent of the population wear dentures. Removable dentures require care to keep them clean and in good repair. Servicing dentures also helps ensure wearers’ mouths stay healthy. Follow these guidelines to keep dentures clean. • Handle with care. Dentures are strong, but they are not impervious to damage. Treat them with care while handling, being sure not to bend or damage any clasps when cleaning, and try not to drop the dentures. When handling dentures, Colgate recommends standing over a folded towel or basin of water for added protection. • Brush daily. False teeth need to be brushed, so don’t trade in your toothbrush just yet. Brushing will help remove food deposits and prevent staining. • Take a break. Remove dentures before going to bed and soak the dentures in warm water or special denture cleansers. Removing dentures for six to eight hours allows tissue inside the mouth to recover. Soaking helps to remove stains, bacteria and tartar. The Mayo Clinic notes that most dentures need to remain moist to keep their shape, so do not allow them to dry out. • Clean your mouth. While dentures are removed, use gauze or a soft toothbrush to clean the tongue, palate and cheeks. If you still have any natural teeth, use a soft-bristled brush to cleanse. Always rinse dentures before returning them to your mouth. • Schedule regular
dental visits. Dentists can advise how frequently to have dentures checked for fit and professional cleaning. Loose dentures can cause sores and infection, so it’s best to address any issues regarding fitting promptly. Dentists also will inspect the inside of the mouth for signs of disease or irritation. • Eat healthy foods. Make sure to eat a well-
balanced diet to keep the body and mouth healthy. Cut up hard foods like fresh fruits and vegetables if dentures are impacting your ability to eat these foods. People of all ages rely on partial or complete dentures to maintain their smiles. Routine care is necessary to keep the dentures intact and mouths healthy.
produce eaters may be inspired to dig in when vegetables are mixed in with their breakfast table favorites. Experiment with fresh-fruit compotes, or cook eggs inside of hallowed-out peppers or squash.
• Health boost: Breakfast foods can be nutritious and lower in calories than other meals, helping those looking to shed a few pounds.
Breakfast for dinner is a fun trend that can save busy families money and time.

This is something you should do anytime there’s a sudden change in a pet’s behavior. Then you’ll need to clean the area thoroughly to remove as much of the pee smell as possible — not just for your nose, but

Butter-Bean Pie Here is a vegetable that doesn’t get enough attention — the butter bean. If you enjoy this vegetable and are looking for a new way to prepare it, you will truly please your taste buds with this one.
Heat oven to 375 F. Spray a deep-dish 10-inch pie plate with butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, brown meat, onion and green pepper.
