DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the best way to obtain and maintain healthy, white sclera? Mine appears to be a light, off-white gray. — M.T. ANSWER: Sclerae — the whites of the eyes — tend to thin with age and reveal the darker-gray choroid underneath. This is benign and common, but I don’t know of any way to prevent or reduce
it. Scleral color changes can happen with rare diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta, and some collagen diseases. The sclera also can change color as a result of scleritis (inflammation of the sclera), and this often happens in relation to Wegener’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The bottom line, though, is: If you are having no symptoms, it’s overwhelmingly likely that these changes are the benign form. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with positional vertigo. My doctor has me doing Cawthorne head exercises. Have you heard of these? Do they work? — M.M.S. ANSWER: Vertigo is an
By Cindy Elavsky Q: Can you tell me when my favorite show, “UnREAL,” will be back? — Keri R., via email A: Lifetime’s critically acclaimed series — which gives a fictitious behindthe-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a dating competition program called “Everlasting” — will return for its third season on Monday, Feb. 26, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Caitlin FitzGerald comes aboard as Serena, the female “suitress” of “Everlasting.” Serena will face off with the show’s queen bees, producers Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby) and Quinn King (Emmynominee Constance Zimmer), who are shaking things up, all for the sake of ratings. The ladies will be tempted more than ever when they’re surrounded
Caitlin FitzGerald by hot new suitors, including Bart Edwards, Alex Hernandez, Adam Demos and Alex Sparrow. Returning to the show are Craig Bierko, Josh Kelly, Jeffrey BowyerChapman and Genevieve Buchner. Joining the cast are Brandon Jay McLaren as the on-set psychologist, Dr. Simon; Kassandra Clementi appearing as Chet’s new girlfriend, Crystal; Chelsea Hobbs as Charlie, a talented new camera assistant; and Jaime Callica as Xavier,
abnormal sense of motion while still. Many people describe it as a “spinning” sensation, but others feel it differently. The most common cause probably is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and rehabilitation exercises, such as the Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises, are very effective. Although medication is frequently prescribed, I recommend strongly against long-term use of medication, which can slow down or stop healing. Although you can do the exercises on your own, I recommend learning how to do them properly and safely with an occupational or physical therapist. READERS: The book-
let on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: How long do shin splints last? Is there anything besides ice that will make them go away faster? My left shin started hurting a little more than three weeks ago. I ran on it once or twice, then I stopped, but it still hurts. Is this normal? When do you think
I can run on it? I did a longer run on a flat path, and normally I do it with hills, so I thought maybe that was the problem, but three weeks seems like too long. — H.O. ANSWER: Pain in the shin bone (tibia) is common in runners, but the hard part is distinguishing between “shin splints,” properly called “medial tibial stress syndrome,” and a stress fracture of the tibia. A stress fracture usually has a discrete area of tenderness, but MTSS has more diffuse tenderness. An X-ray may be needed to be sure it isn’t a stress fracture, since the treatment is very different. A runner with a stress frac-
ture needs to avoid impact activities like running, whereas MTSS usually gets better with just lower running mileage. In your case, the degree of pain is higher than I would expect after three weeks. I’d recommend an X-ray. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
a dancer and Jay’s love interest. Q: I’ve always loved “The Librarians” movies, and I’ve tried to keep up with the series. Will there be any more seasons of the series, or perhaps another movie? — Hattie M., Des Moines, Iowa A: TNT’s “The Librarians” will be back for a fourth season, which is slated to launch with a two-episode premiere on a new night, Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). The hugely popular fantasy series is based on, as you mentioned, TNT’s hit movie franchise of the same name, and centers on an ancient organization dedicated to protecting an unknowing world from the secret, magical reality hidden all around. Returning to the show are Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, Lindy Booth and John Harlan Kim as protectors of the world’s mystical treasures, with John Larroquette resuming his role as their reluctant caretaker. Special bonus: Noah Wyle
recurs in seven of 12 episodes this season as Flynn Carsen, the role he played in the movie trilogy. READERS: I told you I’d let you know when I received more information about “Final Vision,” the true-crime drama based on the longest running criminal case in U.S. history, and I now have a premiere date: Sunday, Dec. 10, at 8/7c on Investigation Discovery. The movie stars “Scandal” alum Scott Foley as Jeffrey MacDonald, a handsome, Ivy League-educated U.S. Army Green Beret doctor who was convicted of brutally murdering his pregnant wife and two young daughters in the middle of the night. The story is told through
the eyes of best-selling author Joe McGinniss (played by Dave Annable of “Brothers and Sisters”), who was approached by MacDonald to write a book about his personal nightmare as he was about to go to trial. Immediately following “Final Vision” will
be an enhanced encore of “Jeffrey MacDonald: People Magazine Investigates” at 10/9c. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

Did you know? According to Food Allergy Research & Education, more than 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions. However, many of the serious allergic reactions to food can be traced to eight allergens in particular. These allergens include crustacean shellfish, eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, soy, tree nuts, and wheat. If it seems as though food allergies in children have increased in recent years, they have. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention report that,
between 1997 and 2011, the prevalence of food allergies in children increased by 50 percent. Though some people may only experience an itchy mouth or a few hives after eating food they’re allergic to, symptoms of allergic reactions to food can be severe and may include anaphylaxis, which occurs suddenly and can cause death. Anaphylaxis can produce a host of frightening symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and weak pulse. Food allergies often resolve during childhood,

New Provincial Park in Saskatchewan best-known outdoor activities for generations to come.” Consultations with local First Nations and Métis people and local stakeholders began in 2011 to share information and identify concerns. While some parks within the provincial park system offer recreation and camping with all the modern conveniences, the new park will focus on protecting the region’s nat-
ural beauty and ensuring the landscape and cultural value of the land is preserved. The Porcupine Hills are significant for First Nations and Métis people who have traditionally used the area. The new park will respect all Treaty and traditional uses, protect natural and cultural resources and provide year-round recreational opportunities. Hunting
and fishing will continue to be managed as they are now, campgrounds will stay small and simple, and First Nations and Métis people will continue to celebrate their cultures and carry out traditional use activities. With the designation of the new park, a total of 29,800 hectares (73,637 acres) will be protected as park land, contributing to Canada’s Target 1 to conserve at least 17 per cent
of the nation’s terrestrial areas and inland water bodies by 2020. The new park will incorporate five existing provincial recreation sites including McBride Lake, Saginas Lake, Pepaw Lake, Parr Hill Lake and Woody River. As implementation of the park proceeds, local stakeholders will have direct input into formalizing a vision for the park and long-term management planning.
Small businesses will pay less tax Following legislative amendments which were introduced today, small businesses in Saskatchewan will soon have the highest income threshold in Canada. Effective January 1, the provincial small business income threshold—the amount of income up to which small businesses pay tax at the much lower
two per cent small business tax rate—is going up from $500,000 to $600,000. “Small businesses are so vital to the health of the economy that our government decided to further enhance the Saskatchewan Advantage,” Finance Minister Donna Harpauer said. “Increasing the income threshold to $600,000 provides
Saskatchewan small businesses with an incentive to hire more workers and invest new capital right here in our province. Meanwhile, rates for personal income tax in Saskatchewan continue to be reduced, which also helps create jobs.” Today’s amendments will implement business income tax initiatives that

Clubroot a serious disease in canola Cory Jacob, Regional Crops Specialist, Watrous, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Clubroot is a soil-borne disease of canola and other crops in the Brassicaceae (mustard) family including mustard, camelina and related weed species. The clubroot pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae) infects plants through the roots leading to swollen deformed roots which reduce the plants ability to take up nutrients and water from the soil, ultimately leading to premature death of the infected plant. Clubroot is a serious disease of canola and should not be taken lightly, however with the use of good agronomy and the latest in plant breeding technology the disease is manageable Clubroot galls were identified on the roots of canola plants this past summer in Saskatchewan crop districts 9A and 9B, which is North Central and Northwest Saskatchewan. The identification of clubroot in Saskatchewan should not surprise anyone as the pathogen can be moved in soil and the disease is present in Alberta
and Manitoba. Couple that with our canola acreage in the province and tight crop rotations, it was only a matter of time before the disease was found in Saskatchewan and now we have to deal with it. The specific locations of where clubroot has been identified in those crop districts are not being released due to confidentiality restrictions and the nature of the disease. It is highly unlikely that clubroot is only present in those identified fields in those crop districts as the spores of the pathogen can be present in a field at low levels without showing symptoms on the plants. With the likelihood of clubroot being present in other fields in crop districts 9A and 9B and potentially other areas in the province, growers need to be utilizing proactive management strategies and scouting their fields to detect the disease early. Clubroot is best managed by preventing the introduction of the pathogen to a field. There are management practices that you can use to manage clubroot whether you have discovered it in a field,
farm in an area where it has been detected or are just generally concerned about the disease: • Plant susceptible crops, including clubrootresistant canola varieties no more than once every four years. Therefore, if you farm in crop districts 9A or 9B, a switch to clubroot-resistant canola varieties is recommended and the implementation of a four year crop rotation. • Weeds in the Brassicaceae (mustard) family are clubroot hosts, control of them will help to keep spore numbers down. Weeds in this family include: all mustards, volunteer canola, flixweed, shepherds purse, stinkweed, etc. • Minimize traffic to and from fields and practice good sanitation to restrict the movement of soil from the contaminated field to other fields or other parts of the field. • Sanitation includes the removal of crop debris and soil, washing with a power washer using hot water and misting with two percent bleach. • If the clubroot infestation is located at the field entrance or a patch within
the field, consider seeding that area to a perennial grass and creating a new access point as far as possible from the infected area. When possible, create a separate exit as far as possible from the field entrance to reduce the movement of the pathogen inoculum out of an infected field. • Use direct seeding and other soil conservation practiced to reduce erosion and soil movement. To monitor for the presence of clubroot in a field, scouting of both susceptible and resistance canola varieties is recommended for clubroot symptoms, which are galls on the roots. Scouting should be focused to field entrances and areas of the field that showing symptoms of wilting, yellowing, stunting and premature ripening. DNAbased soil testing can used to detect the pathogen at lower levels than what will cause symptoms in the field. There are a number of private labs that offer this test for a fee. Before sampling, contact the lab about the proper sampling location and depth as this will influence the ability

to detect the pathogen in the field. In Saskatchewan, clubroot is a regulated pest. Under The Pest Control Act, rural municipalities (RMs) have the authority to undertake prevention and enforcement measures related to the spread and control of clubroot. The provincial government does not have authority under The Pest Control Act. When clubroot is identified in the province through the Ministry’s annual canola disease
surveys, the information is kept confidential. Only general information is released publicly to inform producers in the region that clubroot has been found and this allows producers to manage appropriately. Ministry specialists will also provide support to producers and agronomists to develop farm-specific clubroot management plans. HOLLYWOOD — Chris Pine, fresh from the $821 million “Wonder Woman” grosses, has completed the sciencefantasy film “A Wrinkle in Time,” opening March 9 with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Zach Galifianakis. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your work requires increased effort during the next few days. But it all will pay off down the line. Things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and/or friends. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Liam felt betrayed when his brother and father made a major business decision without him. He later was forced to tell Sally in person that their plan to rebuild and relaunch Spectra Fashions would never happen. Bill met with the demolition crew and concocted a plan to turn the Spectra building into rubble by day’s end. Liam encouraged the Spectra employees to stage a sit-in at the site. Shirley called Sally out on her feelings for Liam and reminded her that he was married. Unsuccessful in his attempted negotiations, Bill decided to put some fear into his opponents. Steffy warned Sally to stay away from her man. Saul and Darlita had a big Halloween surprise for Sally. Wait to See: A clandestine couple fears the
Did you know? There is an emotional component of becoming a pet owner, but finances also need to be considered. Pet ownership may be impractical for those who are barely making ends meet. The ASPCA says that the first-year cost of pet ownership can exceed $1,000. Annual pet expenses include food, medical exams, litter, a license, toys, treats, and any unexpected medical costs resulting from illness. Flea and tick prevention, training, professional grooming, and boarding can drive up costs even further. The animal adoption site PetFinder suggests potential pet parents do their homework to determine the feasibility of getting a pet by examining potential costs and how such costs fit into their budgets.

BLUSHING APPLE BUTTER A flavorful cholesterol- and fat-free spread. Yummy on toast or bagels. •3-3/4 pounds Granny Smith apples (about 8 large), peeled, cored and thinly sliced •1-1/2 cups apple cider or apple juice •1 cup cranberries •3 strips (3-by-1-inch each) lemon peel •3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice •1-1/2 cups sugar In 5-quart Dutch oven, heat apples, cider, cranberries, lemon peel and

but the story line is a mess. Elba’s performance is a bright spot, the action is so-so. It’s loosely based on and meant as a sequel to the book series by Stephen King. It’s not clear if that helps or hurts in under-

standing the film’s plot. “Kidnap” (R) — As a mom, I can tell you one thing: This movie is basically a documentary about what happens when you try to snatch a sweet, sweet baby from a Fierce Mother. Halle Berry plays Karla, a single mom who takes her young son Frankie (Sage Correa) to the city park for some afternoon fun. He is kidnapped, which Karla witnesses, and in the effort to pursue the kidnappers, Karla loses her phone — meaning it’s down to her alone to keep up with the car she is pursuing. It’s just as tight and barebones as that: a mother chasing down her son by any means necessary. She’s not previously military Special Forces, not an
off-duty cop, just a scared but ferocious momma bear who Will Not Quit. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but it’s a vindicating couch escape. “Person to Person” (NR) — This ensemble piece brings together a cast of interesting, complex characters who explore their small, personal issues in a slice of the old Big Apple pie — from the pursuit of a rare recording (Bene Coopersmith) to teen angst over sexuality (Tavi Gevinson), to remorseful action to right a terrible mistake (George Sample III). Along the way, reporters and witnesses (Michael Cera, Abbie Jacobson, Philip Baker Hall) unravel the story of a mysterious death. It’s meandering and
exploratory. It’s low-budget, and doesn’t apologize for it. It was shot entirely in 16 mm, and fans of the low-budget, characterdriven, quirky people in New York indie will like it.

Six simple ways to make more time for family Time is at a premium for today’s families. Many households are dualincome, and children may engage in one or more extracurricular activities after school. The challenge often lies in finding ways to spend quality time together as a family. Although that can sometimes feel impossible, with a little creativity and thoughtful planning, families can find time with one another. 1. Adust wake-up time. Have the family get up with the earliest riser. Then everyone can enjoy breakfast together and touch base about their day to come. Many activities that keep families busy occur after school, so this ensures at least one family meal together every day. 2. Take off for school holidays. Working parents can adust their schedules to include a few vacation days used on school holi-
days. This way everyone benefits from sleeping in and spending time together. 3. Schedule a family day off. Preplan for a weekday when the entire family stays home from work or school. Museums, indoor play areas, movie theaters, and other attractions are less busy during the week than during the weekend. This allows families to have more fun together. 4. Turn chores into family projects. Work around the house will get done much more quickly if everyone pitches in. Plus, this is a great opportunity to work together and learn new skills. Kids may enjoy learning how to prepare meals or plant a garden. 5. Host a family reunion. Extended families may only have the opportunity to see each other a few times a year. Annual family reunions help
strengthen the bond adults and children have with their extended families and provide a fun reason to get together. 6. Schedule a weekly family night. Families can make sure that at least one night each week the schedule is free so that they can spend time together playing a game, watching a movie or doing another family-friendly activity.

In a city that has several million doors and storefronts, 34 Carmine Street in New York’s Greenwich Village stands out. It’s a bookstore — but not just any bookstore. This place is called “Unoppressive, Non-imperialist Bargain Books.” Once inside, after the radical-looking clerk tacitly denies the opportunity to oppress you, you’re
met with an impressive bunch of books. In one corner, there are more Bob Dylan biographies or studies of the man than you ever thought possible. That’s because Dylan — be it Dylan Thomas or Bob himself — is to the Village as Mickey Mouse is to Disneyland. Everyone thinks they like him, or knows that they should like him, but many aren’t so sure. Anyway, it’s on one of those shelves where the title of big book grabs your attention: “Oh No! Not Another Book About Bob Dylan!” Every time the Yankees
make the postseason, or every time Duke is the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll, I am reminded of that book. The Yankees are supposed to win every year, as Hal Steinbrenner and all Yankee fans remind us ad nauseum. But sometimes I think the coaches are just too afraid not to pick Mike Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils for fear of some cosmic retribution. And while Duke lands atop the preseason poll, the band gets back together for another tour. North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky are never far
behind Duke on the main stage. The poll does little else than remind Duke that they forever have a target on their back, and the rest of the league’s teams all rally around that familiar song: “Beat Duke.” In the first few weeks of the season, faced with tough challenges in the ACC, the Blue Devils usually do get knocked off the top perch, only to reappear as the odds-on favorite to win the NCAA tournament in March. I don’t know about you, but I always play three brackets — one picks my alma mater, another picks who I think will win (thus dooming that team to never win) and the third one picks Duke. That’s not just practical sense and experience talking, it’s sound investment advice. If I had invested heavily in Duke, North Carolina
and Kansas for the past 20 years, it would have far outpaced the growth of my 401(k) (and likely a lot of yours, too). Following behind Duke in the poll this year is Michigan State (great coach), Kansas (great players), Kentucky (great freshman about to be in
A9
the NBA next season) and Arizona (great logo). It’s the same old song, and if you have any question that any one of those teams can or cannot win it all this year, well, don’t think twice, it’s all right. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Kids love to read about things that capture their interests: baseball, rainforests, dinosaurs. There are all kinds of online links to these subjects, plus multiple stacks of books for all reading levels available free to check out from your kids’ school and local library. Fiction and nonfiction. But relishing a triceratops doesn’t have to stop with the book itself. Designing big, elaborate bookmarks to keep track of your kids’ reading progress and enhance hot topics can bring creative hours of fun and become real page-turners. For an inspiring “after library” activity, here’s how to make some clever bookmarks to get kids rarin’ to plunge right in
to book reading. These themed bookmarks are fun to handle, and a personalized way for your kids to keep track of their favorite books and subjects. 1. Cut strips of poster board about 4 inches by 12
inches. 2. Have your kids draw pictures that reflect the themes of the books they’ve chosen, and then cut them out. They also might want to flip through some magazines and cut
School and lice As the school year begins anew, lice often becomes a subject of conversation among concerned parents. In certain areas, such as in classrooms and locker rooms, lice easily can be transferred from person to person. Understanding this common foe can help students avoid it and parents recognize it when it’s present. A louse is an ectoparasite, meaning it feeds on its host while living on the surface of the host’s body. Although lice can affect various parts of the body, they are most notably present on the scalp. Research indicates that head lice have been spreading among humans for millenia. Ancient Egyptian and Greek books of medicine make reference to lice, and they have even been found on prehistoric mummies. No one is quite sure just how lice originated, though it is suspected they once targeted another host species, but then adapted to living among humans. Unlike lice that congregate on other parts of the body, head lice are not a vector for disease transmission. They are relatively innocuous, but can be quite a nuisance. The insects are adept at clinging to human hair and feeding on blood from the scalp. Anyone can get lice, regardless of their personal hygiene or lack thereof. Schoolaged children between the ages of four and 14 catch lice more frequently than adults. Although firm data on lice infestations is difficult to come by, estimates suggest that as many as 12 million
infestations occur each year in the United States among children between the ages of three and 11. Head-to-head contact with an already-infested person is the most common way to get head lice, offers the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Head lice can be spread when people sit closely to one another, such as in a classroom or theater. It is very rare that lice are spread through shared belongings such as hats, combs or on furniture. Pets do not play a role in the spread of head lice. Lice tend to congregate behind the ears and at the neckline at the back of the head. Sometimes, they can be found on the eyelashes or eyebrows. Lice can be difficult to detect, and they may not produce symptoms. In some instances, itch-
ing and irritation may be so mild that it goes unnoticed. Plus, because eggs (nits) and even adult lice are so small, they can be difficult to identify. Treating lice typically involves using specialized combs to remove nits and lice. Pesticide shampoos and lotions or nonpesticide treatments may be used to eradicate the lice. Limiting head-to-head exposure is the best way to avoid a lice outbreak.

out photos, or choose images from their sticker collection. 3. Arrange and affix the images and stickers on one side of the bookmarks. Add some decorative designs and borders with markers or watercolors. 4. Draw rows of lines on the backside for writing down the titles of the books they’re reading on that bookmark’s theme. Parenting tip: If your youngest says, “But I can’t read yet!” while an older sibling is making his bookmarks, say: “No problem. What’s your book about?” She may look at the book’s pictures and say, “Puppies!” Hand her some paper and crayons, and encourage her to draw some puppies — any kind of puppies. And when you’re reading to her later that evening, stop at some point in the book and say: “Time to stop. Where’s that marker so we can finish this tomorrow night?” She’ll leap at a chance to use her creation. Extra gift idea: Bookmarks make lovely, literate gifts. Collect colorful small flowers or colorful leaves, press them, and when they’re dry, glue the petals on both
sides of a poster board strip, and cover with clear adhesive-backed plastic. Don’t forget about adding back-to-school class pictures. Grandparents would love to keep track of their grandchildren and the page number of the book they are reading at the same time. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a whippy little mutt who has a ton of energy. “Curtis” will zoom around the house at light speed, sometimes running into furniture and knocking things over. He will not listen to me at all. How can I get him to obey and to calm down? — Exhausted “Puppy Mom” in Denver DEAR PUPPY MOM: It sounds like Curtis needs more exercise time, preferably outdoors with
plenty of space to zoom around. If you have a backyard with a fence, that’s a great place to let him run — supervised, of course. If you don’t have a yard, scout out a fenced-in area where you can take him regularly — but not a dog park, not yet. Curtis first needs to learn to come when you call. He needs to learn how to sit and stay. These three basic commands are the foundation of a dog’s training. Once you’ve let him run in an open space for several minutes and he’s spent that initial burst of energy, call Curtis to you. Use a firm, confident voice. Don’t plead. Don’t get angry. Don’t change your tone of voice. He may not respond right away; just
call again. When he does come, give him praise (and a little treat). Do this every day until he responds each time you call. In fact, he may eventually spend less

• It was 20th-century American journalist, editor and writing teacher Brenda Ueland who made the following sage observation: “Inspiration does not come like a bolt, nor is it kinetic, energetic striving, but it comes into us slowly and quietly and all the time, though we must regularly and every day give it a little chance to start flowing, prime it with a little solitude and idleness.” • If you heard the word “pantophobia,” you might (logically) assume that it means a fear of pants. You’d be only partially correct, however; those who suffer from pantophobia are, presumably, afraid of pants — but that’s just because they’re afraid of everything. • You might be surprised to learn that the first Model T Fords weren’t black — they were green with red stripes. • If you’re thinking of starting a business and want to get up and running right away, there’s a company ready to help

Delight guests with delicious dessert grated lime zest •1⁄4 cup fresh lime juice •1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract •3 large eggs, at room temperature
Baked goods are staples at many family gatherings. Whether hosting family for the holidays, reunions or weekly Sunday night dinners, hosts can make dessert that much better by serving this “BlackberryRipple Lime Cheesecake” courtesy of Lori Longbotham’s “Luscious Creamy Desserts” (Chronicle Books).
Filling •2 6-ounce packages ripe blackberries •2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar •1 teaspoon cornstarch •1-1⁄2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature •1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk •2 teaspoons finely
BLACKBERRY-RIPPLE LIME CHEESECAKE Serves 10 Crust •1-1⁄2 cups pecans •2 tablespoons sugar •1⁄4 cup (1⁄2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
15 minutes. Add rice. Mix well to combine. Continue simmering for 15 minutes. When serving, evenly sprinkle Cheddar cheese over top of bowls. Serves 6 (scant 1 cup). TIP: Usually, 2/3 cup uncooked instant or 1/2 cup regular rice cooks to about 1 cup. • Each serving equals: 137 calories, 1g fat, 5g protein, 27g carbs, 71mg sodium, 39mg calcium, 5g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Protein, 1 Vegetable, 1/2 Starch; Carb Choices: 1-1/2.
CHILI RICE SOUP Is meat taking a hit on your grocery-store budget? Give this meatless chili a try. It has so much flavor, you won’t miss the meat. •1/2 cup chopped onion •1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper •1 (14.5-ounce) can Hunt’s Tomatoes Diced in Sauce •2 cups reduced-sodium tomato juice •1 (15-ounce) can red kidney beans, rinsed and drained •1/2 teaspoon minced garlic •1-1/2 teaspoons chili seasoning •1 cup cooked rice •3 tablespoons (3/4 ounce) shredded Kraft 2 Percent Milk Cheddar cheese
Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 F. Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 9-inch springform pan. To make the crust: Pulse the pecans, flour and sugar in a food processor until the nuts are finely ground. Add the butter and pulse just until combined. Press the crust evenly over the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until light brown. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely. Reduce the oven temperature to 300 F. To make the filling: Mash the blackberries and sugar together in a medium saucepan with a pastry blender or a fork. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the ber-
ries begin to release their juices. Stir in the cornstarch, bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, and boil for 1 minute. Pour the purée through a coarse strainer set over a small bowl, pressing hard on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Refrigerate, tightly covered, until thoroughly chilled. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the cream cheese in a large bowl for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the condensed milk, zest, lime juice, and vanilla, scraping down the side of the bowl as necessary. Reduce the speed to medium and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the pan. Transfer the blackberry purée to a small glass measure. Drizzle it in a spiral pattern over the batter, then swirl a table knife through the batter to mar-
bleize it. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until the cheesecake is puffed on the sides and still slightly jiggly in the center. Let cool on a wire rack. Refrigerate the cheesecake, tightly covered, for at least 8 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set, or
for up to 2 days. To serve, run a sharp knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the cake and remove the side of the pan. Cut the cheesecake into thin wedges with a sharp knife dipped into hot water and wiped dry after each cut.

folate, iron and magnesium. Green beans can be served as a side dish or used in salads, soups or casseroles. This recipe for Sweet Potato, Apple, Broccoli and Green Bean Bake uses these superstar fall vegetables in an interesting and delicious new way! It’s important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet year-round to stay healthy and to ward off diseases, but serving fresh vegetables can be a bit challenging during the winter months. If you enjoy eating seasonally, there are still a good variety of delicious, flavorful vegetables available. Here are some of the superstar fruits and vegetables of the fall and winter months. Sweet Potatoes: They have more nutrients than regular white potatoes and can replace white potatoes in some recipes. Sweet potatoes are loaded with beta-carotene (which the body makes into vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B-6. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert. Apples: A traditional fall favorite, apples are easy to find in the supermarket, or you can pick your own at a nearby orchard. They’re a quick, easy snack that can be paired with peanut butter or cheese for protein. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber. Remember the old saying: “An apple a day keeps the
doctor away.” Broccoli: This is one vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease, while boosting the immune system. Nutrients in broccoli include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B-6, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E. Pumpkin: It’s is a great source of potassium and beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is good for the eyes. Canned or prepared fresh, pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts. Kiwi: This fruit can be eaten alone (after peeling) or can be added to many different dishes, including soups, salads and desserts. Kiwi contains antioxidants, which can help protect the eyes, heart and colon, plus vitamin C, fiber, potassium, magnesium and vitamin E. Avocado: While avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fat, even healthy fat is a dense source of energy, so it’s important to eat them in moderation. Avocados also
contain vitamin E, fiber, potassium, folate and vitamin C. They can be used on sandwiches or salads, or made into guacamole. Spinach: Dark-green veggies contain lots of nutrients that a healthy body needs. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anti-cancer agents. Frozen or fresh spinach can be added to just about any meal. Try using it on pizza or lasagna, or use it instead of lettuce in a salad. Pears: This fruit is a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may guard against macular degeneration. Pears seldom cause allergies and usually are safe for infants and small children. Green Beans: They are high in vitamin K, which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium,
• “I have a great idea for cleaning skylights. Attach an old T-shirt to the broom end of a longhandled broom, then just mist with a cleaner. You can hold it up and scrub gently. The T-shirt material makes a great scrubber.” — C.L. in Alabama
• “In my house, cleaning up is a big issue. I have a large basket in the garage that is designated Toy Time Out. I ask the kids to pick something up and give them a time limit. If I have to ask again, the item goes into time out for a day. I typically get a good response to my requests.” — Mom in Maryland • For a tailgating favorite, make this: Prepare a batch of macaroni and cheese, then add an egg and stir in. Butter the wells of a muffin tin, and fill with the mac and cheese.
Top with a bit of shredded cheddar and bake for 20 minutes at 400 F. You can even make them super portable by using muffin liners. The gang loves these — no fork necessary! Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Coping with fewer hours of daylight Daylight saving time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline. Some people are more accustomed to darkness than others. Norwegians, Swedes and people living in Alaska and the upper reaches of Canada near or above the Arctic Circle may go through a period when winters can be especially dark. Fairbanks, Alaska, gets just three hours and 42 minutes of sunlight on the winter solstice. Those in Barrow, Alaska, will endure a period of 67 days of darkness, according to Alaska.org. Residents of
Seattle, which is even further north than cities such as Fargo, North Dakota, or Portland, Maine, deal with more darkness than those living outside the city may know. Although much of the rest of North America doesn’t experience such profound periods of darkness, when the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Borrowing some of the coping mechanisms relied on in northern latitudes can help many people to see the dark in a different light. • Be aware of SAD.
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD. • Make daylight hours count. Spend time outdoors while the sun is
Pros and cons of bed sharing Many couples sleep in the same bed as their partners, although there are plenty of couples who attest to the benefits of sleeping separately. When children are introduced into the family, sleeping arrangements may be revised once more. Some parents opt to have their child share their same bed space, while others feel children should be trained early to enjoy their own beds. The following is a look at the pros and cons of bed sharing. Pros Proponents of bed sharing say that it strengthens the emotional bond between parent and child. Some studies suggest that the proximity to a parent may also help an infant’s immature nervous system learn to self-regulate during sleep and lessen anxiety. Many mothers sleep with their children to facilitate feedings. It can make nighttime breastfeeding more convenient and also may help a mother’s milk production
increase with more frequent nighttime breastfeeding. Bed sharing is the norm in many countries outside of North America. Children in Asia sometimes co-sleep with their parents into adolescence. Japan has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world. When sleeping side-byside, a baby may synchronize breathing and heart rates with his or her parents. The familiar warmth of a parent also can naturally calm a baby. For those who decide to share a bed, certain safety precautions can help remove risk. • Sleep on a firm mattress with a minimal amount of bed linens. • Tie up long hair and remove jewelry. • Do not drink alcohol or take drugs before bed, as these can effect depth of slumber. • Consider a co-sleeper crib, which attaches to the bed so the child is safer. Cons There are many things
Did you know? Men have a small amount of breast tissue, and that means they can be affected by breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, men’s breast tissue has ducts, but only few, if any, lobules. That’s because men do not have enough female hormones to promote the growth of breast cells. Breast cancer can be separated into several types based on what the cancer cells look like under the microscope. They can be in-situ, meaning non-invasive or preinvasive. They also may be invasive types that have spread to the ducts in the breast tissue. Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. Only about 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men this year. But men who feel lumps or other anomalies in the
area around the nipple should consult their physicians.
to consider before sharing a bed with a baby, and safety is of the utmost concern when doing so. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that babies should sleep in the same room as their parents for the first six months, or up to a year, of life, but not in the same bed, as adults may unknowingly trap a baby in the linens or in the space between the bed and wall. Parents also may roll over onto the child if they are sharing a bed. Some studies also suggest co-sleeping increases the risk of SIDS. Parents also must consider the potential for nighttime wakings before sharing their beds with children. Children who share a bed with their parents, whether infants or toddlers, may cause parents to spend extra time awake. This is especially true for light sleepers who can be awakened by the slightest sounds or movements. Some parenting experts also say that sleeping with a child may result in reduced opportunities for self-soothing. Superattentive parents may pick up or feed the baby when it’s not necessary to do so. Also, a child who requires nighttime parental comfort to sleep may then require it in the daytime to nap as well.

bright in the sky. Make an effort to switch your schedule if work interferes with getting outdoors, even if all that can be managed is an outdoor walk at lunch. Sit by a bright window and soak up rays whenever possible. • Celebrate winter activities. Go skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating, or snowshoeing. Look forward to winter for what can be done, rather than what can’t. • Socialize more often. Instead of holing up indoors alone, frequent the places that become indoor gathering spots for locals. These can include coffee houses, breweries, restaurants, or even the local church. Plan more social occasions with friends and families so everyone can collectively shoo away the winter blues. • Exercise more. Use
the darker hours as an excuse to exercise more, be it at the gym or outside. The Mayo Clinic says that exercise and other types of physical activity can relieve anxiety and depression, lifting an individual’s mood as a result. • Light a fire. Set the kindling ablaze in a fire

pit, fireplace or woodburning stove, or just light a handful of candles. Flames can be soothing and less harsh on the eyes than artificial light. Fall and winter darkness does not have to send a person into the doldrums if he or she embraces the right attitude.
