DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had a low resistance to germs and have caught colds every two to three months. I take adequate vitamins and B-12 shots. Approximately eight months ago, I started taking 50 mg zinc once a day. I feel fine and have not caught a cold since taking zinc. A local pharmacist advised that zinc contains too much metal to take on a regular basis and to take it only at the onset of a cold. I feel fine now and would like to continue taking zinc. What do you advise? — L.F. ANSWER: It is unusual to see problems from excess zinc, but it can happen. Zinc and copper both are absorbed by the same enzyme, so with too much zinc, you can’t properly absorb copper. A student of mine published a report of someone who took MUCH more zinc than you
• “I buy gifts all year long and save them in a closet until the holidays, when I get them out and have festive fun while wrapping. As a matter of fact, I buy my cards after Christmas, too — on sale. I get them out and start writing the day after Thanksgiving instead of shopping.” — M.E. in Minnesota • “I have a gorgeous metal tray that I like very much but didn’t have counter space for in my kitchen. My husband attached it to the wall with a screw and
are taking (the adequate intake per the Institute of Medicine is 11 mg, and you are taking about five times that amount; this person was taking 30 times the recommended amount), who had extraordinarily low copper levels and dangerously low white bloodcell counts. The upper limit for safe zinc intake is 40 mg, and I would definitely recommend against taking more than that every day. I would think taking 25 mg daily would be safe. However, it’s not clear that zinc prevents colds, at least when studied in large groups of people. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with a skin condition called dermatitis herpetiformis 35 years ago. He was prescribed dapsone and has been taking it ever since. We have moved to Florida, and none of the doctors here know anything about dapsone. He is unable to get a prescription. Right now, he is miserable with a horrible skin rash with blisters, and he itches constantly. He is careful with his diet (he is lactose intolerant), but otherwise can find no
answers. Dapsone is the only thing that helps him. Please help. — M.M.C. ANSWER: Dermatitis herpetiformis is an uncommon skin disease seen more often in people with ancestry from northern Europe. In the vast majority of cases, it is linked to gluten sensitivity (celiac disease). A gluten-free diet is one mainstay of treatment, and the other is dapsone. Dapsone is a powerful medication with many potential side effects that must be used by someone familiar with it who must be monitored carefully with periodic exams and blood tests. It causes hemolysis (breakdown of blood cells) to a small extent in most people; however, in people with a condition called G-6PD deficiency, the hemolysis can be fatal. If your husband hadn’t been taking it safely before, he would be tested for this common enzyme deficiency before being prescribed dapsone. Most people with dermatitis herpetiformis who stick to their gluten-free diet carefully are able to stop dapsone eventually. Your husband needs a very experienced derma-

Small Businesses will pay less tax Following legislative amendments which were introduced today, small businesses in Saskatchewan will soon have the highest income threshold in Canada. Effective January 1, the provincial small business income threshold—the amount of income up to which small businesses pay tax at the much lower two per cent small business tax rate—is going up from $500,000 to $600,000. “Small businesses are so vital to the health of the economy that our government decided to further enhance the Saskatchewan Advantage,” Finance Minister Donna Harpauer said. “Increasing the income threshold to $600,000 provides Saskatchewan small businesses with an incentive to hire more workers and invest new capital right here in our province. Meanwhile, rates for personal income tax in Saskatchewan continue to be reduced, which also helps create jobs.” Today’s amendments will implement business income tax initiatives that were announced in the October Throne Speech. This includes returning Saskatchewan’s general corporate income tax rate to 12 per cent (a half-point increase), effective January 1, 2018—matching the rates of the other western provinces. “Once implemented, Saskatchewan’s 12 per cent corporate income tax rate will continue to be competitive and among the lowest in the country, maintaining our province’s advantages when attracting new investment and jobs,” Harpauer said.
Average provincial yields at this time are reported as 43 bushels per acre for hard red spring wheat, 34 bushels per acre for canola, 18 bushels per acre for soybeans, 63 bushels per acre for barley, 746 lbs per acre for mustard and 1,369 lbs per acre for lentils. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions remain a concern for much of the province. Very little moisture has been received in the last number of weeks and strong winds have further dried fields. The fire risk remains very high in southwestern areas and there have been many reports of grass and stubble fires in recent weeks. Significant moisture will be needed heading into winter to replenish what has been lost throughout
the growing season. The majority of producers have indicated that the subsoil is very dry and that seeding conditions next spring will be impacted if moisture is not received. Heading into winter, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 40 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and 23 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 32 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 33 per cent very short. Average hay yields on dry land are reported as 1.1 tons per acre for alfalfa and alfalfa/brome, 0.9 tons per acre for other tame hay, 1.0 ton per acre for wild hay and 1.6 tons per acre for greenfeed. On irrigated land, the estimated average hay yields are 3.0 tons per acre for

alfalfa and other tame hay, 2.0 tons per acre for alfalfa/brome and 3.5 tons per acre for greenfeed. Hay quality going into winter is rated as 11 per cent excellent, 78 per cent good and 11 per cent fair. At this time, most livestock producers have indicated that they will have adequate supplies of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain heading into winter. However, producers in southern regions are reporting that many areas will have inadequate winter feed supplies and that shortages will be likely. The loss of feed supplies due to recent fires in the southwest has increased concern for producers in those areas. With the drier than normal field conditions this fall, the number of acres
seeded to winter cereals is below average in most areas. Rain was received in much of the province at the end of September, allowing for winter cereal crops to germinate and establish.
Thanks to the recent warm and dry weather, producers have been able to complete fall work such as putting down fertilizer, fixing fences, moving cattle, working fields, hauling bales and grain, picking rocks and cleaning up fields. Many producers, particularly in eastern regions, have been able to reclaim acres lost to flooding in previous years.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Can you tell me what Nathan Fillion has been up to lately? I really liked his recurring role on “Modern Family” last season and was sad to see him go. I need him on my TV screen again! — Ginger F., via Facebook A: You’ll get to see the ruggedly handsome face of the former “Castle” star soon in ABC’s “The Rookie,” which Nathan will star in and executiveproduce. The show has been given a straightto-series order from the network, its premise being, as outlined in “Entertainment Weekly”: “Nathan Fillion stars as John Nolan, a rookie cop in the LAPD who is 20 years older than most of his fellow rookies. Nolan ditched his small-town life and career to move to L.A. to pursue his dream of becoming a cop, but now he finds himself navigating the unpredictable, dangerous and occasion-

The show originally airs in Australia, but Netflix co-produces the series and airs it on the streaming site a few weeks after its Australian premiere. The series centers on the strange goingson in Yoorana, Victoria, Australia, where James Hayes (played by Patrick Brammall) is a small-town policeman. Hayes is called to the local cemetery in the middle of the night after seven people have inexpli-
roni and cook as label directs. Meanwhile, in 5- to 6-quart saucepot, heat oil over medium-high heat until hot. Add onion, cabbage, garlic and pepper; cook until cabbage begins to wilt, 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often. Stir in broth, beans and 1-1/2 cups water; heat to boiling. Drain macaroni. Stir macaroni into cabbage mixture; heat through. Serve with Parmesan if you like. Serves 6. Along with local doctor Elishia McKellar (Genevieve O’Reilly), James struggles to keep the case hidden from his colleagues, his family and the world. The seven people are all linked in some way, and the search begins for someone who knows the truth about how and why they have returned.” Q: I heard that Amy Sherman-Palladino has a new show out. Where and when can I see it? — Kelli D., via email A: The talented creator of “The Gilmore Girls” has a new series called “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which premieres Nov. 29 on Amazon Prime. The series takes place in 1958 in New York City. Midge Maisel (played by Rachel Brosnahan, whom you might remember as Doug Stamper’s doomed ex-prostitute girlfriend, Rachel Posner, on “House of Cards”) has her life on track: husband, kids and elegant Yom Kippur dinners in their Upper West

HOLLYWOOD — Bradley Cooper’s direction of Stefanie Germanotta in the reboot of “A Star Is Born” must be so hot, Warners has moved up the opening from September 28 to May 18. In case you don’t know, Stefanie Germanotta also is known as Lady Gaga. In this version, the Esther Blodgett/ Vicki Lester character in the Judy Garland version is named Ally, and Cooper’s character is named Jackson Maine instead of Norman Maine. Elliott Gould (former husband of Barbra Streisand, who starred in the 1976 reboot) is playing her “benevolent manager.” Andrew Dice Clay is portraying her father and Dave Chapelle is playing someone named Noodles. Meanwhile, Chapelle has taped a special for Netflix, “The Age of Spin: Dave Chapelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium.”
It’s a new era in the NFL. For the first time in years, a new crop of general managers and head coaches have taken a leap by bounding into the trade market. Usually the providence of Major League Baseball, the NBA and NHL, the time has finally come for the NFL. With the exception of one or two streaking teams, the vaunted parity of professional football, the desperate fight to make the playoffs or the desire to begin a quick rebuild has led to a spate of high-profile trades. It began when Marcell Dareus, a defensive tackle and former No. 3 overall draft pick, was traded to Jacksonville from Buffalo. One year after Rex Ryan, Buffalo has surprised many this season, actually challenging New England despite having a weak passing attack. That

When Chris Pratt starred in “Parks and Recreation” from 20092015, he was overweight, which worked for his comedic role on the show. In order to become superhero Peter Quill/ Star Lord for “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014, he pumped iron and became a super hunk. “Jurassic World” (2015) further cemented his ascent to stardom. His wife, Anna Faris, had their son, Jack, in 2012 and began the CBS series “Mom” in 2013. A new baby, both parents working in series and the global attention afforded Chris may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. They announced in August they were amicably separating. Anna has confessed, “Life is too short to be in a relationship where you feel it isn’t fully right or somebody doesn’t have your back or
fully value you!” Pratt went from “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” ($200 million cost; $864 million gross) right into filming “The Avengers: Infinity War,” due May 4, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” out June 22, “The Lego Movie Sequel,” opening February 2019, and the untitled “Avengers” sequel arriving May 2019. He had no time to play
changes with the addition of wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, a former firstround pick and Carolina’s leading receiver this year. Three-time Pro Bowler and former first-round draft pick Duane Brown was dealt to the Seahawks in exchange for draft picks, quarterback Russell Wilson restructuring his contract in exchange for added protection on the line. With the loss of Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, a Giants team in total disarray, Seattle vaults to the head of the pack in the NFC with the move. Wilson is dynamic as ever, and this pickup can only help. The Eagles and the Patriots may have made the best deals, however. The Eagles, with Carson Wentz behind center, look like the real deal. Anyone that has watched the NFL over the years knows that in order to be taken seriously in the league you have to put together two consecutive seasons of top performance, otherwise
you’re a Scott Mitchell or a Matt Cassel. We’ve seen enough of Wentz to know he’s going to be around for quite a while. He throws a ball like Dan Marino used to ... no West Coast offense in Philly. They matriculate the ball downfield, Wentz not afraid to chuck the ball a good 30-yards a clip. Their fifth-ranked rushing attack just added Jay Ajayi for a fourth-round pick, and even though Ajayi is gaining a reputation for being a locker-room cancer, that move has the word “steal” written all over it. The Patriots shook up the market, dealing highly touted backup quarterback Tony Garoppolo to the 49ers for, get this, a second-round pick. At the time of the trade, Tom Brady told the press he couldn’t name his backup, but it likely won’t matter anyway ... the guy is a rock. Even the Jets made trades! Hapless Cleveland tried to make a trade for Cincinnati’s backup quarterback, but in true Browns fashion, forgot to

house! Another “super hunk,” Henry Cavill, is of course playing Superman in the Nov. 17 release of “Justice League.” He is now filming the psychological thriller “Nomis,” with Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario, Stanley Tucci and Nathan Fillion, and will be dealing with Tom Cruise (they haven’t said if it’s as a friend or foe) when “Mission: Impossible 6” opens July 27, with Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett and Alec Baldwin. Baldwin has taken time off from his “SNL” White House duties while they are not taping to complete “Downsizing,” with Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz and Kristen Wiig (due Dec. 22). He gets top billing in “Drunk Parents,” with Selma Hayek, and with Sienna Miller in “The Private Life of a Modern Woman.” Alec’s been so busy he hasn’t had any time to clash with photographers! call in the trade. That franchise is a mess. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had an intern try to fax it over. In all, let’s hope that this is a harbinger of things to come. As any MLB fan will tell you, trades are practically half the fun of the game. Shaking things up in the NFL versus standing pat is a tradeoff most fans would take any day. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Cars 3” (G) — When aging racer Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is being overtaken by the newest and youngest rides out there, he must look inside himself and rev up a few new tricks with a little help from a techie named Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) and his friends. Has Lightning McQueen faced his final checkered flag? Don’t count him out yet. With any threequel — especially in kids’ animation — you’re taking a risk on a lump trying to cash in on merchandising one last time, but the “Cars” franchise still has it: the right jokes, the touching moments, the inspiring message and the heart of a champion. Long live No. 95. “Ingrid Goes West” (R) — Mostly unbalanced and awkward, Ingrid Thorburn (brilliantly played by Aubrey Plaza) has a savage social-media problem (can you say #stalker?). Personal tragedy makes it clear to Ingrid that she needs a #BFF to help her weather the storms of life, so she heads to California and tracks down Insta-star Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen), a social-media maven whose envy-worthy online escapades have made her an “influencer.” Ingrid hacks her way into Taylor’s inner circle by

Elizabeth Olsen, Aubrey Plaza in “Ingrid Goes West” any means necessary, but following someone IRL isn’t always something to “like,” as we find out in this hilarious dark comedy that’s a biting commentary on obsession and the underbelly of Internet celebrity. O’Shea Jackson Jr. cameos delightfully as Ingrid’s landlord. “mother!” (R) — A couple (Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence) live a remote, tranquil existence in a home that is truly paradise. Their idyllic life is disturbed when visitors (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) show up, and an unraveling mystery begins to tear at their relationship. Director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “Requiem for a Dream”) helms this thought-provoking and truly cerebral thriller. Seen through the eyes of Jennifer Lawrence’s mother figure, your enjoyment may or may not depend on your amenability to Aronofsky’s allegory. The story is certainly not straightforward, but it’s captivating and suspenseful. You will be either rolling your eyes midway through or still thinking about it hours after you turn the television off.
“The Limehouse Golem (R) — A serial killer is on the hunt, and Scotland Yard’s Inspector Kildare (Bill Nighy) seeks to eliminate this threat, the Limehouse Golem, at the earliest opportunity. With scant clues written in blood, the public in a frenzy and the confidence of his superiors in question, the case leads Kildare through a maze of suspects, among them connections to a music hall star accused of a terrible crime (Olivia Cooke) but who may be a witness of the first order. Troubled pasts are everywhere you look, while lush cinematography highlights the dark and dirty corners of Victorian London. Did you know? According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year.

Bush Beans.” Store in a cool place, and your heirloom seeds will be ready for planting next spring. Rather than keeping them all, give some away, too.
Harvesting the remaining green tomatoes off of yellowing, spindly vines might seem like a final salute to summer and fall’s bounty, but don’t say your adieus yet. A scragglylooking plot gone to seed is ripe for more family outdoor fun. Hiding in pods and drooping flowers are thousands of seeds waiting to be discovered, sorted and saved for next year’s planting. There’s potential for doing artful activities, too, using odd-shaped seeds and withering finds. Here are four engaging seed activities to do with school-age kids:
seeds on a paper towel and continue to dry for a day or two.
DISCOVER A plant usually has to die off for the seeds to be ready to harvest. If you have a pole-bean plant, for example, look for beans that are shriveled and turning brown. Pick and break them open to reveal the drying seeds. Place
SORT Collect seeds from other plants, including flowers. Marigolds store seeds right in the dried bloom. Shake the blooms to dislodge the seeds and examine them with a magnifying glass. They look like porcupine quills.
Kids will have fun sorting through them to find and keep those that have a nice black color to them. SAVE Put sorted dried seeds into small containers or paper bags. Decorate the outside and label and date with personal descriptions, like “Mason’s Magic Marigolds” and “The Bennetts’ Bodacious
CREATE Big seeds you collect can be made into one-ofa-kind jewelry. Thread a large needle with elastic threading or heavy threading doubled up and string on pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, spacing with beads for an eye-catching bracelet or necklace. Or, make a stick-style figure with sticks and other finds on a sheet of paper. You might start with a smooth leaf for a body, such as a maple leaf. Use an acorn for a head, snap thin twigs for arms and legs, and add two large pinecone seeds for feet. (Shake a large pinecone to dislodge seeds hiding inside.) Withered flowers, milkweed floss and grasses make great hairdos. Dot glue under the objects if you want to keep the picture for a while. Or, give it a name and just enjoy it for the moment. If so, you might want to check out the WorldSkills Competition. Every two years, competitors from 75 WorldSkills member countries compete to find out who is the best at a variety of skilled trades, ranging from bricklaying, plumbing and cabinetmaking to auto body repair, die-making and electronics. All three dogs have been fixed. — Jackie M. in Denver DEAR JACKIE: Chloe’s behavior sounds more like a compulsion than a simple “mommy” or nurturing thing. It also seems to be a way of signaling dominance over the two males. Whether it bothers the other dogs or not, it bothers you, and you can work

Start by giving the dogs a refresher course in basic commands: sit, down and stay being the most important for this scenario. Dogs that quickly obey basic commands are often easier to train out of other habits. When the dogs have been placed in a “down” • If you’re looking for an American-made car, your best bet is ... If she starts licking the others, repeat the “stay” command; if she continues the behavior, separate her from the others and practice the “down-stay” commands for a few minutes. Other methods are available for curbing compulsive behavior, but daily training in basic commands is important in establishing a base to work from. If training doesn’t help, consult your veterinarian to rule out any health issues with the dogs and to get advice on Chloe’s behavior. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Christmas tree safety tips Christmas trees are staples of the holiday season that can be found in millions of households across the globe. But Christmas trees can be as dangerous as they are heartwarming. According to the American Christmas Tree Association, Christmas tree fires contribute to $13 million in property damage annually. Many Christmas tree fires involve live Christmas trees that, while beautiful, pose a greater fire threat than artificial trees because they can dry out, making them vulnerable to electric lights and nearby heating sources. Homeowners can take the
following steps, courtesy of the ACTA, to prevent Christmas tree fires. • Purchase a fresh tree. The ACTA notes that fresh trees are less likely to catch fire than trees that were cut weeks before being purchased. Avoid trees that are shedding their needles. Try to purchase trees with vibrant green needles that are hard to pluck. Purchasing freshly cut trees from tree farms instead of grocery store parking lot vendors, whose trees might have been cut weeks earlier, can ensure trees are fresh. • Discard damaged lights. Damaged lights are
not just an eyesore but a significant safety threat. Electrical malfunctions in lights can contribute to tree fires, so discard any damaged lights. Before placing lights on the tree, stretch each strand out on the floor and plug them in to see if any lights are damaged or burned out, replacing those that don’t pass inspection. • Place the tree away from heat sources. Christmas trees are the centerpieces of holiday decorations. But trees should never be placed near heat sources, no matter how aesthetically appealing certain spots
may seem. Keep trees away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heating vents, and lights. • Keep the tree watered. A tree that gets ample water is less likely to dry out, and dried out trees pose a significant fire risk. Check water levels and water trees in the morning and night as needed, and even more frequently if necessary. • Turn lights off at night. Christmas tree lights should always be turned off at night when residents are going to bed. In addition, lights should never be on when no one is home.
Natural ways to fight dandruff Dandruff is a skin condition of the scalp that is relatively easy to spot. Telltale flakes can be seen on shoulders, and are especially noticeable on dark clothing. Dandruff can be embarrassing and sufferers may try various methods to alleviate the symptoms. While relatively harmless, dandruff can cause itching and irritation. The Mayo Clinic says the condition may worsen during the fall and winter when indoor heating can dry out the skin. Leading causes of dandruff include irritated, oily skin that forms flaky white or yellow scales. Failing to shampoo enough may contribute to the buildup of oils and skin cells, which also can cause dandruff. A yeast-like fungus known as malassezia lives on the scalps of many adults, and when it is overproduced, can cause more skin cells to grow, resulting in dandruff. Dry skin and skin sensitivity also may contribute to dandruff.
Dandruff typically does not require the care of a doctor. Many over-thecounter shampoos and products designed to alleviate flaking are readily available. Many dandruff products contain coal tar to lessen symptoms, offers the American Academy of Dermatology.

People who suspect they have dandruff should speak with a doctor just to rule out dandruff as a symptom of something more serious. After such discussions, those concerned about over-thecounter treatments may want to try these natural remedies. • Lemon juice: Massage two tablespoons of lemon juice into the scalp and rinse with water. • Apple cider vinegar: Mix 1⁄4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1⁄4 cup water in a spray bottle. Spritz on the scalp and wrap your head with a towel. Allow to penetrate for up to an hour before washing hair as usual.

Cranberries also can be used to decorate your home during the holidays. Try placing cranberries in a glass bowl with water and place a floating candle in the container. You’re only limited by your imagination and creativity. The Thanksgiving table would not be complete without the cranberry sauce. No need to open a can when this delicious Holiday Cranberry Sauce is so simple to make at home! And after Thanksgiving, use the cranberry sauce to create these delicious Sweet Potato Cranberry Muffins! HOLIDAY CRANBERRY SAUCE This sauce can be made ahead and will keep in an air-tight container for 2 weeks. Combine this wonderful sauce with 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard and pour it over leftover turkey, baked fish, chicken or pork. It’s a delicious way to finish the dish and a wonderful use for any Thanksgiving leftovers.
Combine all of the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer until thick (about 15 minutes), stirring occasionally. Cool completely. Makes 16 (3 tablespoon) servings. SWEET POTATO CRANBERRY MUFFINS •3 cups all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon salt •1 tablespoon baking powder •3/4 teaspoon cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon nutmeg •1 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons orange zest •3/4 cup cooked, mashed sweet potatoes •1/2 cup canola oil •2 large eggs •2/3 cup milk •2 teaspoons vanilla extract •3/4 cup cranberry sauce (about 1 tablespoon per muffin) •3 tablespoons turbinado sugar, if desired Heat oven to 400 F. Line a muffin tin with paper liners for best results, or grease well. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Rub sugar and orange zest together. Whisk into dry ingredients. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the sweet potatoes, canola
oil, eggs, milk and vanilla. Slowly mix the wet ingredients into flour mixture. The batter will be thick. Place half the batter at the bottom of 12-muffin cups. Spoon a tablespoon of the cranberry sauce on top of the muffin batter. Top muffins evenly with remaining muffin batter. Sprinkle each muffin generously with turbinado
sugar, if desired. Bake muffins for 15 to 17 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove muffins from pan and let cool on a cooling rack. Makes 12 large muffins. Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author

Cranberries are part of many fall holiday feasts, but their nutritious tastiness is worth having at any time. Like many fruits, cranberries are high in fiber and vitamin C and low in calories and fat. A fresh cup of these tangy berries has just 51 calories, with 5 grams of fiber and 24 percent of the vitamin C the average person needs in a day. Cranberries are packed with antioxidants that may help maintain heart health and reduce cholesterol. The tannins in cranberries may help prevent gum disease and urinary tract infections. In the lab, cranberries prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract and the gum line. According to the November 2010 edition of the Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter, “a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigating cranberry intake and urinary-tract infections showed that there has been some benefit established in reducing the number of infections in women.” Cranberry juice often is the form used when deliberately seeking to prevent infection. The fluid in the juice does help maintain hydration, which is known to help prevent infection. Cranberries are very tart and often are consumed in combination with sugar. For example, a glass of cranberry juice cocktail has about 30 grams of sugar
