DEAR DR. ROACH: About a year ago, I began to experience irritation in my left eye. It felt like there was a scratch or eyelash in it all the time. It became very inflamed. The other eye is affected, but to a lesser degree. All types of treatment for dry eye have been unsuccessful. Most recently I have been using a serum made from my blood. My eyes are red and weepy, and my left eye feels sore or achy at the back of the eyeball, if that makes sense. I’m hoping that you might have some suggestion about treatment. — N.T. ANSWER: Dry eyes can

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Steffy confided in Bill about how Liam betrayed her by not only kissing Sally, but by continuously defending and standing up for her against her wishes. Wyatt and Liam didn’t see eye-to-eye about Bill’s controversial views regarding business and family. Liam was beside himself with worry having not heard from Steffy and wondering where his marriage stood. Eric and Quinn relished in their impenetrable bond after having weathered the wrath of the venomous Sheila. After getting to know Steffy much better the night before, Bill had a difficult time keeping his mind off her. Wanting to move forward past their fight from the previous evening, Liam surprised Steffy with his idea to renew their wedding vows

be caused by many different conditions, and this is very prevalent in the population, especially in older individuals. Because many conditions can cause it, I can’t offer any one specific treatment, and it sounds like you have tried a lot already. First-line treatment includes artificial tears, one drop four times daily. Preservative-free formulations may be helpful for some people, but they are more expensive. Gels and ointments may be more effective, but since they can blur the vision temporarily, they work best at bedtime. It sounds like you are getting autologous serum tears, a treatment reserved for severe symptoms, such as in people with Sjogren’s syndrome, which causes the body to destroy its own tear glands. A treatment you may wish to discuss with your ophthalmologist is placement of punctal

occlusion, which blocks the drainage of fluid from the eyes to the nose. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a healthy 61-year-old woman. I take no prescription medicine or aspirin. I recently had a flu shot at a health fair, after which blood ran down my arm all the way to the elbow. I then had a tube of blood taken for a cholesterol check, and they had a hard time stopping the bleeding. I started drinking a small glass of red wine in the evening a few weeks ago. Could the red wine be thinning my blood, or is this something I should see my doctor about? — C.M. ANSWER: Although large amounts of alcohol can predispose a person to bleeding, a small glass shouldn’t affect bleeding much or at all. You should see your doctor, who probably will check your platelet count and go from there.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about apple cider vinegar. I have heard that you can use it in small doses as an antacid. It seems to be a contradiction because it is acidic in nature. Is this true or just an old wives’ tale? — C.V. ANSWER: Old wives’ tales sometimes contain great wisdom. In this case, however, there is no scientific data to back it up. There are many anecdotal reports of success and many theories why it might work. However, I’m a believer in evidence, not theories, and there just isn’t any. Further, vinegar can damage teeth, so if you try it, be sure to rinse carefully or use a straw. That being said, it’s unlikely to do any other harm, so it may be worth a try. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers

Saskatchewan Health Authority launching their day-to-day patient care responsibilities as usual.” By moving to a single provincial health authority, the provincial government will be able to reduce senior administrative staff positions by 86 per cent and reduce senior administrative staff salaries by 80 per cent or $9 million annually. “Maintaining local connections and preserving

strong community relationships is a priority for our government and for the Saskatchewan Health Authority,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “While there will be some changes to senior administration, management and support services will continue to be located across the province, and local health system contacts and representatives will still be available to community

partners.” “While the transition into one organization will formally occur on December 4, the work to unify the health system under a single organization and co-ordinate system-wide transformation to improve patient care will take time,” Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Scott Livingstone said. “We are embarking on a

multi-year journey in collaboration with patients, health care providers and partners across the health system.” When the Saskatchewan Health Authority launches, it will be the largest organization in Saskatchewan, employing more than 44,000 employees and physicians responsible for the delivery of high quality and timely health care for the entire province.

Protect your livestock with insurance Cattle producers know all too well how factors beyond their control can wreak havoc with the markets and cause financial hardship. The value of the Canadian dollar, Mother Nature, international trade and food safety issues have had a great impact on markets and producers have been left to deal with these challenges

on their own. With the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP), producers can protect themselves against the negative impact of these events. The effectiveness of WLPIP has been demonstrated recently. In the last three years over $12 million has been paid to Saskatchewan producers who purchased price

insurance, compensating for the downturn and volatility that was experienced in the livestock market. Producers also responded this past spring as over 22 per cent of the marketable calf crop was insured, the highest amount since the program started in 2014. As a result of the introduction of WLPIP, producers have a way

to manage price risk and remove some of the uncertainty in the market place. Price insurance is offered year-round for feeder cattle, fed cattle and hogs. Calf price insurance can be purchased between February and the end of May each year, as this coverage is for spring born calves which are normally marketed

in the fall. Producers who purchased calf price insurance in the spring of 2017 are reminded that settlement prices for their claim window will be occurring throughout the fall. Each producer’s claim window will be different depending on the length of the policy. It is important producers

review their policies to determine when their claim window begins. Producers can then monitor the settlement prices during their claim window and decide whether to make a claim. For more information contact any of the 21 Crop Insurance offices across the province, call 1-888935-0000 or visit saskcropinsurance.com.

Police operation The Yorkton RCMP conducted a police operation south of Broadway on Agricultural Ave. in the early hours of November 22. Details of the operation were not available at press time, but traffic was restricted and residents were asked to steer clear of the area, respect police barricades and traffic restrictions and be aware of an increased police presence in the area. Also, musician/songwriter and acting newcomer Jake Etheridge has been cast in the recurring role of Sean, who is a recent military veteran suffering from severe PTSD who has yet to embrace his talent and passion for music. Also of note, in season five, Jake co-wrote six songs featured on the show, including “Burn to Dark” and “As the Crow Flies.” Rainee Lyleson has been cast in the recurring role of Alannah, a beautiful singer-songwriter who starts out as a backup sing-

with an offering of a dead animal. Well, there’s actually a good reason for it. It seems that the cats most likely to present owners with a gory gift are spayed females, and they’re acting out behaviors seen in the wild. Feral cats teach their young how to hunt by bringing them dead or injured prey. With no kittens to teach, your cat is

evidently trying to teach the family it does have — namely, you — how to find food on its own. • You probably aren’t familiar with the term “anthropodermic bibliopegy,” but in the unlikely event that it ever comes up in conversation, you now know that it refers to books bound in human skin. • It’s not surprising that during the severe northern winters, the Arctic ground squirrel goes into a state of suppressed physiological activity. What is surprising, though, is that during this torpor, its body temperature can get as low as 27 degrees Fahrenheit —

without the animal becoming just another chunk of ice. This nifty trick can be attributed to a biological process that clears the rodent’s blood of ice nucleators, which facilitate freezing. • You might be surprised to learn that in a 2016 survey of human resources professionals, it was reported that more than half of all workplaces offer paid time off for employees to vote. The versatile actress also is filming the HBO movie “My Dinner with Herve,” with Peter Dinklage, Jamie Dornan, David Strathairn and Andy Garcia. Season four now will have a ONE-episode premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), with episode two making its debut the following Wednesday, and so on. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Atomic Blonde” (R) — In a coterie of ruthless spies, Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) reigns supreme -- a vixen with literally killer stilettos, endless style, smarts and the brawn to back it up a mile. And that’s what she does — in satisfyingly unending fight sequences and all the gritty action you came for. After a colleague is killed, she is sent in from MI6 to Berlin to assist the local chief (James McAvoy) in ferreting out a double

LOG CABIN PUDDING Whip up this rich dessert for whatever celebration you attend. •2 envelopes unflavored gelatin •1 cup maple syrup •2 cups milk •1 cup heavy or whipping cream •1 cup pecans, toasted and chopped •30 vanilla wafer cookies, crushed In 2-quart saucepan, evenly sprinkle gelatin over 1/3 cup cold water; let stand 1 minute to soften gelatin. Heat over low heat, stirring, 2 to 3 minutes, until gelatin completely dissolves (do not boil). Remove from heat; stir in maple syrup. Pour milk into medium bowl; with wire whisk, stir in gelatin mixture until blended. Set bowl with gelatin mixture in large bowl of ice water. With rubber spatula, stir gelatin mixture until it gets very thick, about 15 minutes. Remove gelatin mixture from bowl of water. In large bowl, with

Sprinkle half of cookie crumbs over bottom of shallow 2-1/2 quart glass or ceramic baking dish. Top with pudding mixture and sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight. Makes 16 servings. • Each serving: About 200 calories, 3g protein, 12g fat (5g saturated), 29mg cholesterol, 40mg sodium. PUMPKIN RAISINBREAD PUDDING •1 loaf (16 ounces) raisin bread with cinnamon •5 cups milk •1-1/4 cups sugar •1 can (16 ounces) solidpack pumpkin (not pumpkin-pie mix) •3 tablespoons all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground ginger •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •6 large eggs •Confectioners’ sugar for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 F. Cut each bread slice into 4 pieces. In very large bowl, with wire whisk or fork, beat milk, sugar, pumpkin, flour, ground ginger, vanilla extract and eggs until well-mixed. Add bread; gently press down bread to coat well. Let bread soak in milk mixture 15 minutes. Spoon mixture into 13-by-9 inch glass baking dish. Set baking dish in large roasting pan; place on oven rack. Fill roasting pan with boiling water to come halfway up side of baking dish. terrain by wildlife agent Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner). As the two piece together her story, they are presented with both the strength and vulnerability that result from living in such remoteness. Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan (“Hell or High Water,” “Sicaro”), this film is a master class in nuanced character study and bone-chilling tension. You’ll be drawn in from the start, and by the time the action comes, you’ll be absolutely frozen to your seat. “Brigsby Bear” (PG13) — Corny and a little weird, but somehow unexpectedly sweet, “Brigsby Bear” is the story of James (Kyle Mooney), who was abducted as a baby, raised underground and cut off from the world but for an educational children’s show about the titular bear. After James is rescued and reunited with his birth family — and finds

out that the show he is obsessed with was made exclusively for him by his underground “Dad” (Mark Hammill) — he begins to equate the resurrection and resolution of the show as necessary to his assimilation into real life. He is joined in his mission by a cast of characters, among them Greg Kinnear as the local detective on his case, Ryan Simpkins as his new sister Aubrey, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as her filmmaker friend Spencer. “The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” (PG) — Squirrels, moles, mice and birds unite to save idyllic Liberty Park from a Very Bad Man with plans to bulldoze the natural beauty to make way for a garish theme park. There are familiar (and talented) voices here (Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, Maya Rudolph, Jackie Chan), but in the time it took for pizza to be delivered, my kids were on to other things. There’s a

weak political undertone, some tired tropes and a few funny moments, but not much else.

HOLLYWOOD — Clint Eastwood is so confident as a director, he’s cast the actual non-actor heroes — California friends Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlotos and Spencer Stone — to play themselves, re-creating when they took down a terrorist on a train to Paris. Supporting them are Jenna Fisher (of “The Office”), Judy Greer (“The Planet of the Apes” franchise) and Ray Corsani, as the terrorist. Eastwood’s decision to

For every certain moment of greatness in sports, there is an equally certain moment of tragedy. On Nov. 7, 2017, Roy “Doc” Halladay became the living embodiment of that sentiment through his death. Halladay was a great pitcher. Baseball is a funny sport in that hitters get all the accolades, but true fans and those in the business of the sport know that pitchers are what make the game work. Fans may cheer for the home-run hitter, but it’s the pitcher who puts the ball in play, and it’s the pitcher who sends that hitter back to the bench with a few killer curves and fastballs that

• Since you know it’s coming anyway, take the opportunity to clean out the fridge a day or two before a big family dinner. It’s a good idea to eat up any leftovers for dinner the day before. • In the fridge, it takes 24 hours of defrosting for every 5 pounds of turkey. When defrosting in water (only birds in a leakproof plastic wrapper), allow 30 minutes per pound and change the water every half-hour. • “When setting the table, my mom would put note cards face down under the place mats. On the note card was written an afterdinner, but before-dessert chore. Someone would be responsible for packing up leftovers; another would load dishes and flatware into the dishwasher; still another would wash or dry the servingware, and pots and pans. We all chipped

Clint Eastwood go with the real guys was made just before shooting most people in the upper decks can’t even see nor comprehend. Halladay was just such a guy. Seven times he was in the top five for the Cy Young award; twice he left with the iron. At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, his was a figure you couldn’t ignore. For years, it was common knowledge around the league that if you had Halladay, you had a winner on your team. He won 20 games three times, 19 games twice. Never lost more than 11 games in a season, ever. His lifetime WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) was 1.17 ... better than Bob Gibson (1.18), Jim Palmer (1.18) and Bob Feller (1.3) to cherry-pick a few. He threw two no-hitters — one a perfect game and another in the playoffs, matching only Don Larsen in that feat. He won

began in July. It’s a risk, but will be very exciting to watch. “The 15:17 to Paris” opens Feb. 9. Who is Bill Skarsgard, and why did his recent film, “It,” gross $654 million? Skarsgard plays Pennywise in the film of Stephen King’s novel, which was already a miniseries in 1990. Skarsgard, 27, recently completed “Assassination Nation,” with Joel McHale, Maude Apatow (daughter of Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann) and Anika Nani Rose. Bill Skarsgard comes from a famous Swedish film family. His father,

Stellen Skarsgard, is best known for “Mamma Mia” (2008) and will be in the upcoming sequel. Bill’s three brothers are all stars of the Swedish cinema. Alexander Skarsgard (41) is known for “The Legend of Tarzan” (2016), the HBO series “True Blood” (200814) and his recent Emmywinning role in “Big Little Lies.” His brother Gustaf (36) has starred since 2013 in The History Channel’s “Vikings” (which returns for another season Nov. 29) and youngest brother Valter (21) already has appeared in 15 Swedish films.

203 games and lost only 105. The guy had Hall of Fame written all over him, and there was little doubt that he could have kept pitching after his retirement. He was only 40 when he died. To understand Halladay’s dominance during the early parts of the 21st century, you only need check the baseball columns of the day. Halladay pitched in Toronto for 12 seasons, and every single team wanted him in their uniform next. Philadelphia won that contest, and the instant credibility he lent to the franchise was impossible to miss every fourth day. “There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings ever to play the game,” read the

Phillies twitter, echoing sentiments of fans everywhere. It’s creepy that Roy died in a plane crash. While air travel is considered the safest means of transport, it was hard for baseball fans to believe when Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson both met their early demise in a small cockpit. Halladay, it seemed, couldn’t resist the allure either. “I have dreamed about owning a A5 since I retired! Real life is better [than] my dreams!!” Halladay tweeted on Oct. 13. Well, Roy got his wish, and we got to watch him play. He’s in a better place, and every sportsman was better for having known the guy. Rest in peace, Roy ... fly on. Your desk job could be hurting you Best RRSP Rate in Town (NC) — With some experts calling sitting the new smoking, many of us who work in an office setting are rightly concerned about the effects of a sedentary lifestyle on our health. Fortunately, you can make smarter, healthier decisions if you know about the risks of sitting at a desk all day long. 1. Leg problems. Your body was made to move, and a lack of physical activity can lead to poor circulation and blood pooling in your legs. Excessive sitting can even lead to blood clots or thrombosis,

according to Thrombosis Canada. Like most other conditions here, a few simple stretching and walking breaks can help lower your risk. 2. Sick building syndrome. Did you now that the air inside a building can be up to 100 times dirtier than the air outside? You’re also exposed to a mix of unhealthy gases, chemicals and pollutants from air conditioning, dangerous bacteria and mould. To combat this, make sure to head outside for some fresh air during your lunch break.

3. Weak glutes. An inactive desk life can cause you to lose muscle tone, but recent headlines claiming that sitting makes your glute muscles completely break down are exaggerated. As long as you keep up with your gym routine, you won’t hurt your toned physique. 4. Mental health issues. Working long hours, tight deadlines and overexposure to harsh lights can all contribute to stress, which may lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Even motivational company meetings can

sometimes lead to feelings of depression, as forcing people to feel positive can serve to highlight how unhappy they might be. 5. Serious illnesses. Research shows excessive sitting and other hazards that come with working an office job can increase your risk for cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and obesity — all of which can also up your chances of developing an irregular heart beat (atrial fibrillation) and blood clots (thrombosis). Ergonomics specialists recommend switching up positions every eight

Celebrate Hispanic heritage Hispanic cuisine includes dishes from various countries. Food plays a big role in many Hispanic cultures and families, and a celebration of Hispanic heritage would not be complete without an authentic Hispanic meal. Marmitako is a Basque fishermen’s stew that was once eaten on the tuna fishing boats along the Cantabrian Sea along the northern coast of Spain. Whether you want to celebrate your own Hispanic heritage or indulge in one of the many culinary delights that trace their roots to Hispanic countries, the following recipe for “Marmitako (Tuna and Potato Stew)” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Exploring the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) is sure to please.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What do you think of the law in the U.K. that fines drivers up to $6,580 for having their pets unrestrained in the car? Isn’t that the perfect example of government overreach? — Chuck G., El Paso, Texas DEAR CHUCK: That is a hefty fine, but I understand why the law is on the books. While some dogs are comfortable sitting unrestrained in a back seat or passenger seat, so they can put their head out the window (you never see an unhappy dog doing that, ever), many pets have a hard time sitting comfortably as the car moves about. Unrestrained, dogs may slide around, fall onto the floor and otherwise be stressed by the ride. Some may get really agitated

Marmitako (Tuna and Potato Stew) Serves 4 •2 cups diced potatoes •Salt to taste, divided •1 red bell pepper, julienned •1 yellow onion, julienned •1⁄4 cup plus 4 teaspoons olive oil, divided •1 teaspoon sherry vinegar •1⁄4 cup Sofrito (see below) •1 teaspoon smoked hot paprika •1 cup fish stock •1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme and clamber around in the car, distracting you. I know from experience how difficult it is to keep a car on the road when a cat panics, climbs up the fabric of the back of the driver’s seat, and sinks both front claws into your shoulder. And of course, if there’s an accident and your pet is unrestrained, serious injury can result. Your pet will crash into objects inside the car, or be thrown completely out of the car. The U.K. isn’t alone in enacting legislation to restrain pets in mov-

Boil potatoes in salted water until soft; set aside. While potatoes are boiling, sauté the red pepper and onion in 1⁄4 cup olive oil with a little salt and the vinegar over low heat until caramelized, about 45 minutes. Then add the cooked potatoes and all other ingredients except the tuna to the red pepperand-onion mixture. Cook for another 15 minutes. Prepare 4 small plates. Place 3 tablespoons of the vegetable mixture on each plate. Adjust salt. Preheat a plancha or cast-iron skillet on high. Drizzle 1 teaspoon olive oil on each piece of tuna and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Sear the tuna on the plan-

Each law has different requirements and penalties, but all agree that an unrestrained pet can contribute to distracted driving or an obstructed view. Regardless of your state’s law, keep your pet safe by making sure it is either in a carrier or a pet-specific seat restraint when you drive. After 35 years of cooking, I’ve had my share of Holiday disasters! Here are some secrets to saving your sanity and your dinner: HOW TO DEFROST A TURKEY You’ll need at least 24 to 48 hours (about five hours per pound) to thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator. If you need to do a quick thaw, place the wrapped, frozen turkey in your kitchen sink or a large container like an ice chest. Cover the turkey with cold water. Drain and refill the water every half-hour because as the bird thaws out, the water will get warmer. Using this method, the turkey will thaw at the rate of about a half-hour for each pound.

• On Nov. 27, 1095, Pope Urban II calls on all Christians in Europe to war against Muslims in order to reclaim the Holy Land. Urban’s war cry caught fire, and all told, between 60,000 and 100,000 people responded to his call. • On Dec. 2, 1777, Philadelphia housewife and nurse Lydia Darragh single-handedly saves the lives of Gen. George Washington and his Continental Army when she overhears the British planning a surprise attack. Darragh took notes, which she sewed into her coat before passing them onto American troops. • On Nov. 30, 1886, the Folies Bergere in Paris introduces an elaborate revue featuring women in sensational costumes. Some revues featured as many as 40 sets, 1,000 costumes and an off-stage crew of 200. Per tradition, the show’s title always contains 13 letters and

PREPARING THE BIRD Remove the giblet package (neck, livers, heart and gizzards) from inside the cavity of the bird AND check the neck cavity. Some manufacturers place the giblet package in the neck cavity and others place it inside the cavity closest to the legs. Most turkeys come with the legs already trussed (crossed and secured with a metal or plastic bracket). If you’re not going to stuff your bird, there’s no need to truss the legs. Trussing an unstuffed bird hinders the hot oven air from circulating inside and around the legs. This means that the dark meat will take longer to cook and the breast meat will cook faster and probably dry out before the legs ever get completely done.

up” timer in the turkey, as it usually means that the breast is overcooked and the dark meat isn’t done. If the dark meat isn’t done, remove the wings and breast meat from the rest of the turkey, in one piece, if possible. Cover the breast and wing portion with foil and set it aside. Put the drumsticks and thigh portion of the turkey back into the oven to continue cooking until done. You can re-assemble the whole turkey and garnish it, or just cut it into serving portions and arrange it on a platter.

THE TURKEY ISN’T DONE Don’t rely on the “pop-

STUFFING SAVERS If the stuffing/dressing is too wet, spread it out in a thin layer on a sheet pan so that it will dry quickly. Place it back into the oven for 5-7 minutes. If it’s too dry, add more pan drippings or chicken broth to the mixture. If you don’t have any more drippings or broth, combine a chicken bouillon cube (if you have one), along with a teaspoon of poultry seasoning, three tablespoons of butter and 1 cup water. Cook the mixture in the microwave for 3-5 minutes

includes the word “Folie.” • On Dec. 1, 1913, Henry Ford installs the first moving assembly line to mass produce an entire automobile, reducing the time it takes to build a car from more than 12 hours to 2 1/2 hours. Ford divided the Model T’s assembly into 84 discrete steps and trained each worker to do just one. • On Nov. 28, 1925, the “Grand Ole Opry,” a popular showcase for Western

music, begins broadcasting live from Nashville, Tennessee. The showcase was originally named “Barn Dance,” after a Chicago radio program. • On Nov. 29, 1952, newly elected President Dwight D. Eisenhower goes to Korea to find the key to ending the Korean War. Although he remained mum about his plans, an armistice was signed eight months later.

or until it comes to a boil. Stir to combine and then add it, a little at a time, to the dressing until it’s moist. SOUPY MASHED POTATOES Add unseasoned dry breadcrumbs to soupy mashed potatoes to absorb any excess liquid. GRAVY RESCUE TIPS If the gravy is lumpy, pour it through a strainer into a new pan and bring it to a simmer, stirring gently. If it’s too thin, mix a tablespoon of melted butter with a tablespoon of flour. Bring the gravy up to a boil and whisk in the butter mixture to thicken your gravy. If the gravy is too thick, add a little more chicken broth, pan drippings or a little water and butter to thin it out. BURNT OFFERINGS If the turkey begins to burn while it’s roasting, flip the bird over immediately and continue to cook it. After the turkey is done, you can remove and dis-

card any blackened skin and about half an inch of the meat below any burnt area. Slice the remaining breast meat, arrange it on a platter and ladle gravy over it. If your vegetables or gravy burn on the bottom, carefully remove the layer that isn’t burned into another pot or serving dish. DON’T SCRAPE THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN. If the dinner rolls are burned on the bottom, just cut off as much as you can, butter them, and fold them in half to cover the missing ends. SOGGY PIE CRUST Sometimes, the top crust on a pie will cook faster than the bottom crust. If your bottom crust is underdone, cover the top with foil so it doesn’t burn and put your pie back in the oven at 425 to 450 degrees for about 12 minutes. Make sure to put it on the bottom rack so the underside gets the most heat. Alternatively, you can scoop out the filling and

top crust and just bake the bottom crust by itself. That way, when it’s done you can pour the filling back in and make a crumb topping from the top crust. It may even look better this way if your top crust didn’t turn out great the first time. Whipped cream is the perfect “make-up” for desserts that aren’t quite up to par. You can cut the top layer off a burnt pie and cover it with whipped cream. Hopefully, these tips will rescue you from any Holiday disasters. • eating spicy food • drinking carbonated beverages • sudden changes in air temperature • excitement or emotional stress • swallowing too much air • overeating Many cases of hiccups last only a few minutes, but for some people hiccups can last a while longer. Persistent hiccups are caused by injury or irritation to the nerves that control the movement of the diaphragm. Sometimes this results from acid reflux, degenerative nerve diseases, like multiple sclerosis, or even brain injury. Hiccups also may last longer due to overuse of tobacco or alcohol. Males tend to be more prone to hiccups than females. While there are a number of ways to treat hiccups, there is no definitive cure. Holding one’s breath or putting sugar under the tongue are some of the more popular remedies. Hiccups are largely a nuisance and not a medical emergency. However, knowing how to get them under control can be a relief.

The causes of hiccups Hiccups may not be a medical emergency, but they certainly can be a nuisance. Also known as “singultus,” hiccups can come out of nowhere and last for quite some time. An effective way to alleviate hiccups has proven elusive to many, forcing many people to ponder if they can be prevented. According to the resource Kids Health, the funny noises and other annoying ticks associated with hiccups can be blamed in part on the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the chest. When the diaphragm is working correctly, it helps to regulate breathing. In a contracted position, the diaphragm lets air into the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes, the lungs release carbon dioxide. Hiccups occur when the diaphragm starts contracting erratically and out of rhythm. These spasms can cause the larynx and vocal cords to close suddenly, resulting in a sharp intake of air and the hiccup chirp that occurs thereafter. Hiccups can stop and start abruptly, for no reason at all. But certain things may contribute to hiccups. These include:

A chicken dish to please the whole family Chicken is a versatile food that can be prepared and cooked in various ways and is capable of being combined with a host of tasty ingredients. In fact, cooking and serving chicken with certain foods can pack a flavorful punch, turning an otherwise bland chicken breast into a dish families won’t soon forget. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Roasted Red Pepper, Sun-Dried Tomato and Feta Topped Chicken” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simply Scratch: 120 Whole Homemade Recipes Made Easy” (Avery). ROASTED RED PEPPER, SUN-DRIED TOMATO & FETA TOPPED CHICKEN Serves 4 •4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (6 to 8

ounces each) •1⁄2 cup My Grandma’s Greek Dressing (see below) •1⁄3 cup diced charred red bell pepper (see below) •1 tablespoon minced sun-dried tomatoes •1 tablespoon brined capers, rinsed and drained •1 tablespoon minced fresh flat-leaf parsley •1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt •1⁄8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •3⁄4 cup crumbled feta cheese •1 tablespoon unsalted butter •1 tablespoon olive oil F.

Preheat the oven to 350

Place the chicken in a medium bowl or large resealable bag and pour the Greek dressing over

the top. Marinate the chicken on the countertop for 20 minutes. (Any longer and the lemon juice will start to break down, or “cook,” the chicken.) In a medium bowl, combine the bell pepper, tomatoes, capers, parsley, salt, black pepper and feta. In a 12-inch cast-iron or other oven-safe skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium-high

heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade and let any excess marinade drip back into the bag. Place the chicken top-side down in the skillet and sear for 4 to 6 minutes. Turn the chicken over and divide the pepper and feta mixture over the top. Slide the skillet into the oven. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Carefully transfer the chicken to a platter and let it rest for 5 to 6 minutes before serving. MY GRANDMA’S GREEK DRESSING Makes 3⁄4 cup •1 large clove garlic •1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed in your palm •1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt •1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Pass the garlic through a garlic press into a glass jar or resealable storage container. Add the oregano, salt and pepper. Pour in the lemon juice and olive oil. Shake. Pour. Swoon. Store the salad dressing in the refrigerator, but pull it out 10 to 15 minutes prior to using to warm up the solidified oil, or run the jar under warm tap water. Store in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 months. Charred peppers:

A fresh and tasty take on a much-maligned holiday staple Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just something to go ignored on holiday serving tables. The following recipe for “Fig and Walnut Fruit Cake” from Andrew Schloss’ “Cooking Slow: Recipes for Slowing Down and Cooking More” (Chronicle Books) is chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruit cake. FIG AND WALNUT FRUIT CAKE Makes 12 servings •Vegetable oil spray •1 pound walnut halves and pieces •1 pound dried figs, stems removed, quartered •3⁄4 cup all-purpose flour •1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder •1⁄2 teaspoon fine sea salt •1 cup sugar •3 large eggs, lightly

beaten •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •1⁄2 cup diced candied orange peel •1⁄4 cup walnut brandy, such as Nocello Preheat the oven to 225 F. Coat the inside of a 9-by13-inch baking pan with the vegetable oil spray; set aside. Toss the walnuts and figs in a large mixing bowl; set aside. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Toss 3 tablespoons of the dry ingredients with the nuts and fruit to coat. Adds the eggs and vanilla to the remaining dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon to form a smooth batter. Mix in the candied orange peel. Scrape into the nuts and fruit and toss with a rubber spatula until everything is evenly coated.

Scrape the batter-coated nuts and fruit into the prepared pan, wet your hands with cold water, and pack the nuts and fruit firmly into the pan. Set in the oven and bake for 8 hours, until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. (An instant-read thermometer inserted in the center of the cake should register 215 to 225 F.) Remove the pan from the oven and spoon the brandy over the top. Cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Run a knife around the edge to loosen, invert onto a rack, remove the pan, turn right-side up, and cool to room temperature. Variation: You can “bake” this in a slow cooker; you will need a 1-1⁄2-quarter soufflé dish and a 6-quart or larger

slow cooker. Once the batter is in the soufflé dish, put it in the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.

Visiting loved ones in assisted living facilities For many seniors, a day arrives in their lives when it is no longer safe or practical to live at home alone. Assisted living facilities can help seniors adjust to their new situations. Such facilities typically offer comfortable surroundings, caring staff and all the amenities of home. Although fellow residents can provide companionship and friendships can develop over the course of time, assisted living facility residents also enjoy regular visits from family and friends. Such visits keep seniors connected with their loved ones and break up routines that, over time, may become monotonous. Some people may feel anxious or awk-

ward visiting assisted living facilities because it may shed light on the frailties or specialized needs of loved ones. This may be especially true if a loved one has a physical, neurological or mental illness. Rather than avoiding visits, individuals can follow these guidelines. Time visits right Many residents have the most energy in the morning or early afternoon right after meals. Call ahead to find out if there are any medical appointments or outings planned. Visiting during meals or activities can be fun because you’ll be engaged and will have something to keep both of you busy.

Limit distractions Find a quiet and comfortable place at the facility where you can spend time with your loved one. This way you can focus most of your attention on the person you are visiting, and he or she can do the same. A sitting room or an outdoor area can be a nice place to spend time away from television or other people’s conversations. Plan an excursion If you are able to take the resident off of the property, arrange to take them somewhere that would interest them. Do not plan too much, because you want the excursion to be fun, not taxing.

Bring along items Gifts are not necessary, but photos, books, puzzles, or even keepsakes from home can serve as catalysts for wonderful conversations.

Help the conversation along If a loved one has dementia, visits can be especially challenging. However, simply being present can be comforting for the person even if conversation is stilted. Be patient and positive. Find topics that stimulate responses, and fill in if things get quiet. Visiting someone in an assisted living facility can buoy residents’ spirits and make for an enjoyable afternoon.

Tips for tackling your picky eaters Many a parent understands the problems posed by picky eaters. Dinner table confrontations over vegetables can try parents’ patience, and kids busy refusing to eat their broccoli may not be getting all the vitamins and minerals they need to grow up healthy and strong. Recognizing that parents sometimes face an uphill battle when confronted with picky eaters, the American Heart Association offers the following tips for dealing with picky eaters. t -FU LJET QJUDI JO PO QSFQ The AHA recommends allowing picky eaters to help shop for gro-

ceries and prepare meals. Youngsters who pitch in may be more invested in their meals and therefore more likely to eat them. t 4UFFS DMFBS PG VOIFBMUIZ GPPET Kids imitate their parents’ behaviors, and that extends to the foods mom and dad eat. Parents who set bad examples by eating unhealthy meals and snacks may find it especially difficult to convince youngsters to forgo pizza and potato chips in favor of healthy fare. In addition, kids can’t sneak unhealthy snacks if such snacks are nowhere to be found. Avoid sugary drinks, such as soda, in favor of water or 100 per-

Helping multiples feel special Seeing two or more babies on an ultrasound can change the lives of parents in many happy ways. Twin and multiple births have been on the rise, thanks in part to a number of factors, including couples’ willingness to undergo various fertility treatments to improve their pregnancy odds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 135,336 twins were born in the United States in 2014, the most recent year on record. Multiples can sometimes lose their identities when they are broadly referred to among family and friends as “the twins or “the triplets. But all children, whether they shared a womb or a home, are unique, and it’s important that parents treat them as such. t 3BUIFS UIBO GPDVTJOH on multiples’ similarities,

celebrate their differences. This can help them develop their unique talents and personalities. t -FU NVMUJQMFT FYQSFTT their individual style rather than dressing them in the same clothes. t 'PS JEFOUJDBM NVMtiples, clue others in to recognizeable features that distinguish them from one another. t 1MBO TQFDJBM EBZT when multiples have alone time with friends or family members. This way they do not have to always do things jointly. t "WPJE DPNQBSJOH NVMtiples as much as possible so jealousy and rivalry does not become an issue. t 1VSDIBTF TFQBSBUF birthday cards, cakes and items that cater to multiples’ desires. t %FGJOF NVMUJQMFT CZ who they are rather than their twinhood (or triplethood).

cent juice as well. t 4UJDL UP B TOBDL TDIFEVMF The AHA advises that many kids like routine and will grow accustomed to eating at certain times. When parents and kids stick to a snack schedule, the AHA suggests kids are likely to eat what they’re given. Choose healthy

snacks, ideally incorporating two food groups. t "EE IFBMUIZ GPPET UP EJTIFT LJET BMSFBEZ MJLF Another way to get picky eaters to embrace healthy foods is to introduce such foods into dishes kids already like. For example, add antioxidant-rich blueberries to pancakes. Kids

might like that extra burst of flavor, and parents can rest easy knowing kids are eating something healthy. t %PO U CF BGSBJE UP TFSWF UIF PDDBTJPOBM CPXM PG JDF DSFBN PS CSPXOJF When eaten in moderation, foods that are not often associated with nutrition, such as ice cream and baked

goods, don’t pose much of a threat. In addition, if kids’ diets never include such indulgences, the AHA notes that youngsters are more likely to overindulge when they do get their hands on forbidden foods, such as at birthday parties or other special events.

SMUD - In loving memory of my best friend Iris Smud, who passed away Nov. 26, 2014. The Day God Took You Home: A million times I’ve needed you, A million times I’ve cried. If love alone could have saved you, You would have never died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place no one can ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you But you didn’t go alone. Part of me went with you The Day God Took You Home. -Lovingly remembered by Every Thurs. Marilynand & Gene.

(NC) — With the school year underway and winter here, kids who suffer from eczema (an itchy, chronic skin condition) may find that uncomfortable symptoms interfere with focusing and hitting the books. If your child suffers from eczema, education is key to helping them have a successful and productive school year. Help them stay focused on the important job of learning with these tips. Don’t wait until parent-teacher interviews. Make a point to meet with teachers, the school nurse and administrators to discuss your child’s eczema, how it might affect them in terms of activities, and how the school can provide support. If possible, request that your child be seated away from heat sources that may worsen their condition and relocated to an area with fresh air. Discuss specific triggers. Work together to avoid “flare-ups”. A child may unconsciously scratch throughout the day, further damaging their skin barrier. Prepare effective strategies that can help your child manage in the classroom. Prepare a relief kit. Include a moisturizer, bandages, and any prescription medications. Keep the kit at school, and walk your child’s teacher or school nurse through it to make sure they understand what each item is for and when and how it should be used. Dress for success. If school uniforms are required, ensure that a cotton alternative is acceptable. Many uniforms are made of synthetic fabrics, which can contribute to the eczema itch. There is no cure for eczema, but it can be managed effectively by avoiding triggers, using moisturizers, proper use of prescription medications, and by adopting a long-term approach to care. Speak to your dermatologist and find more information at www.eczemacanada.ca.

Practice illness etiquette this flu season Be honest with other parents. Whether it’s a birthday party or family get-together, you’re responsible for disclosing the sick status of your kids to other parents. The flu spreads easily and can have especially serious repercussions in families with young or old members, so be courteous and tell people or just keep your sick kids at home. Know the cutoff point for fevers. Children should stay home if their temperature passes 37.8 C. “Make sure your kids are feverfree for 24 hours before they go back to school or play dates, reminds Wong. “The same rule applies to parents going back to work. Teach your kids the basics. Using tissues for runny noses, coughing into sleeves and hand-washing are all things kids can easily do to halt the spread

(NC) — The flu can come out of nowhere, hitting hard and bringing high fevers, coughing, muscle aches, headaches, chills and fatigue –– lasting anywhere between a few days and a few weeks. It’s no wonder that in a recent survey 86 per cent of parents admitted they are annoyed when others send their sick kids to school or daycare. But what constitutes good illness etiquette? “In the same survey, 30 per cent of adults said they have sent their kids to school or daycare when they were sick or contagious, so I think we have a lot to learn, says Victor Wong, a pharmacy owner with Shoppers Drug Mart . “By following a few simple rules of illness etiquette, we can easily stem the virus’ spread and avoid putting other families at risk.

of germs. Because the flu is contracted through mucous membranes, reminding kids to keep their fingers away from their mouths, noses and eyes can also be helpful. “Make it fun and you’ll make it a routine, suggests Wong. “Teaching vampire coughs or giving your kids a 20-second hand-washing countdown are great ways to subtly share good hygiene practices. Get vaccinated. “Vaccination is part of a comprehensive flu prevention plan and one of the best things you can do protect your family and others, advises Wong. “Spending just a few minutes to get vaccinated at your local Shoppers Drug Mart or Loblaws store could save you and your kids weeks of misery, and it might even save someone else’s life.

Did you know? According to the National Sleep Foundation, using a computer or electronic device before bed can make it hard to fall asleep. Studies have shown that even small electronic devices like smartphones can emit enough light to confuse the brain. Photoreceptors in the retina sense light and dark, helping to align circadian rhythms to the external daynight cycle. The signals these receptors send to the brain help people be alert

in the morning and fall asleep at night. But using devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptop computers before bed can miscue the brain and promote wakefulness at a time when the body should be falling asleep. Men and women who like to read before going to bed can increase their chances of getting a good night’s sleep by reading print books or print editions of magazines or newspapers rather than e-readers or tablets.
