DEAR DR. ROACH: Most health professionals agree that one should follow a “healthy diet,” yet no one ever says exactly what that is. I have low thyroid, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Some of my meds cause chronic constipation.
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Brooke stood up to Ridge during his argument with Thorne. Steffy’s immense guilt surfaced when Liam queried her about the night she left him and what caused her to forgive him. Ridge interrupted Brooke’s lunch with Thorne and made her go back to the office with him. Having overheard the quarrel, Sheila approached Thorne and told him all about Ridge and Quinn’s kiss in Australia. Eric told Quinn about Brooke’s colorful history with the Forrester men. While Steffy filled Bill in on the lie she told Liam, Quinn was innocently telling Liam about the bracelet Steffy left behind at the Forrester guesthouse. Thorne admits to Brooke why he really
We live in a time where we expect our athletes to be exceptional, to become “human cheat-codes” in the video-game parlance, and not simply adequate or even effective. For perhaps no other professional athlete, that sentiment rings far too true for one golfer — Tiger Woods, the King, one might say, of heightened expectations. As the PGA Tour’s socalled 2017 NovemberDecember Challenge Season (or as some refer to the official-ish slate of shootout and skins tournaments that don’t count toward a player’s official earnings, the “Silly Season”) begins, Tiger Woods has signaled he is all in. The problem is, he doesn’t know what that means quite yet. The embattled former champion who once seemed destined to break every one of Jack Nicklaus’ records, the player who even made Augusta National reconfigure (read “Tiger-proof”) its hallowed links, now is looked upon as a larger-than-life curiosity. Never mind wondering if the man can win another major when the question now is: Can he even walk? Since his late May DUI
I and hundreds of others would be most appreciative if you could print a structured diet to follow for a week or two, and then we could repeat it. — F.G. ANSWER: This is a question I get often, but I have been reluctant to answer it. I certainly could print a diet that I think is healthy, but depending on your medical conditions, it might not be precisely right for you. You have diabetes, so avoiding sweets is particularly important, and since you have high blood pressure, it’s more important for you than it is for others to keep your sodium intake low. However, the most
important reason I can’t publish a healthy diet that would work for everybody is that food choices are intensely personal and relate to your upbringing and locale. With my own patients, I don’t try to give them a diet they should change to, but instead get a careful diet history and work with them to try to make their diet healthier. For most people, that means reducing red meat and choosing other good protein sources, like legumes, fish, nuts or tofu. It usually means increasing vegetables and fruits, reducing sugars and substituting whole grains for processed ones.
It often means removing unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks entirely. What it emphatically does NOT mean is taking the joy out of eating. If I have a patient who really, really enjoys a less-thanhealthy dish, I recommend that the patient eat it, without guilt, but infrequently, so that it becomes a special indulgence. For most people, it’s easy to make some changes in the diet in order to feel better, get healthier and maybe live longer. DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter recently was operated on for a large tumor in her head. They called it a paranasal sinus

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Rafe was forced to hide when Hope showed up at Sami’s hotel room. Will reunited with Belle, who inadvertently revealed an unpleasant incident from his past. GENERAL HOSPITAL Sam fought for her future. Jason was drawn to the familiarity of the docks. Franco wrestled with his conscience. Nelle tried to play nice. Sam made her intentions known. Amy was surprised to see Maxie. Lulu hatched a new plan. Olivia crossed Monica. Ned offered a solution. Sam pleaded with Alexis for help. Carly had a run-in with Nelle. Ned stood his ground. Sam sought help from an unlikely source. Sonny got a lead on an enemy’s whereabouts. Josslyn received an important package. Franco surprised Liz. Lulu told Michael
arrest, where we learned his search for a cure from back pain included taking copious amounts of pills — Ambien, Dilaudid, THC, Vicodin and Xanax were found in his system — Tiger has been in hybrid pain and pill management. After his fourth back surgery in July fused together portions of his spinal cord, Tiger immediately set his sights on the course. In late November, the legend himself returned to the Hero World Challenge, where he cautioned anyone looking for heroics. “I don’t know how hard I can hit it, what shots can I play. ... I’m still learning this body,” Woods said. “Once I get a better understanding, I can give you a
better answer.” The Hero World Challenge was just the third tournament Tiger Woods has played in for the past two years. His exodus has been neatly filled by the arrival of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler. Unsurprisingly, the competitor who finished 15th in a field of 17 last year, who hasn’t won a tournament since 2014, who hasn’t played an official round in 10 months, still shows plenty of spark when their names come up. “In an ideal world, I would like to have them feel what some of them had to go against all those

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Ashley was furious when she learned that Abby quit Newman Enterprises after Victoria double-crossed her at the press conference. Nick gave Sharon his blessing when she told him that Scott was moving in with her. Cane was impressed when Hilary made an instant connection with his new baby, Sam. Chelsea received pressure from Victor to attend his tree lighting party at Newman Ranch. Victoria invited Ravi for a drink and offered him a position at Newman. Jack and Nikki shared an emotional moment. Nick opposed the city’s plan to demolish Chancellor Park and build condos. Scott and Abby almost kissed. Hilary agreed to change the gossipy nature of the “Hilary Hour.” Wait to See: J.T. Hellstrom returns. years,” Woods said. Can Tiger win back his awe-stricken fan base and return to anything remotely like his championship form? All we know is that he’s not out of the woods yet, and that’s the real challenge. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.
cancer, and said that it is very rare, with only a few other known cases. Can you help me know what caused this? — F.W. ANSWER: Paranasal sinus cancers are very rare. They usually have no symptoms until they get large enough to invade other structures, and so can be very advanced when diagnosed. They often present as pain in the teeth or face, bleeding or persistent nasal obstruction. They also can press up against the eye, causing double or blurry vision. Treatment depends on the type of tumor cell, but it usually involves surgery and may include both radiation and chemotherapy. As far as what caused it, there is no way for me to tell for your daughter.
However, factors that increase risk for paranasal cancers include air pollution, tobacco smoke and occupational exposures, especially for leather, textile and wood workers. Human papillomavirus may be the cause in some people.
The prognosis also depends on the cell type. With rare cancers, it is very hard to make a general statement. I hope she has a good outcome.

It’s one of the key provinces in Canada.” While the dealership represents the future, it’s coming on a celebration of the past for John Deere itself: 100 years of tractor production. The final detail at the grand opening had little to do with tractors and farm equipment, but instead with a young man with cancer and his family. The dealership raised money for Zackary Pelly, who is suffering from acute leukemia, with the dealership matching donations up to $5,000 for the family. All Pattison Agriculture dealers have picked a charity to raise money for, and Ward wants to see them contribute the maximum amount. people.” Ose says they’re happy “We wish him the best to see the investment and we know it’s not easy Pattison is making in the for a young family.”
Pattison Agriculture holds grand opening By Devin Wilger Staff Writer It has been a year since Pattison Agriculture has opened its new location in Yorkton. The new facility celebrated its official grand opening the day before its anniversary. Arthur Ward, President of Pattison Agriculture, says that the new facility was something they needed in Yorkton, as they were bursting at the seams at the former location on the opposite end of town. “Based on the size of equipment and demands of producers today, we were just not able to properly service our customers and represent John Deere out of the facilities that we had.” That lead to the new, much larger facility on York Road. The design was intended to provide better customer service, with more room for parts and service as well as a safer environment for employees. The new facility also represents Pattison’s commitment to the region, Ward says. “When you build a facility like this, at the cost of construction today, it isn’t a short term play. We’re not going anywhere, there will always be a John Deere dealer here in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. I can’t imagine a time in the future when it isn’t Pattison Agriculture. So when you build a facility like this you have to try to look forward and build it not just for today but for tomorrow as well. So that’s why when you see certain things, people may wonder why you did things a certain way, but it’s our best guess of what we’re going to need in the future.” One unexpected feature is a teaching theatre, something that Pattison is putting in their new dealerships. Ward explains that they’re working to meet producer needs. “Machinery is getting more and more complicated to operate, and experienced operators are getting harder and harder to find. So as a dealer, we want to help our producers by offering training services to them.” They also will offer the

Jenny Ose, Manager Ag and Turf for the Canadian Sales Region for John Deere, notes that they feel that this is a commitment to both sides of the business, John Deere and the product they’re selling, and the customers who they are serving in the region. Ose sees a challenging time for agriculture, especially as commodity prices aren’t increasing at the same rate as input costs. “Commodity prices have been challenging in the past few years, export markets have been challenging and the other thing that has been challenging has been input prices, you think about fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and anhydrous... All of those input costs are very expensive and are continuing to grow year over year for our farmers. So when commodity prices aren’t at historically high levels, they put a strain on producers and their overall profitability year over year.” The investment in the region by Pattison is some-
thing that she sees as looking towards the future of agriculture in the area. “To make investments
in agriculture, it’s showing a very strong commitment to the future of ag, feeding 8-9, eventually 10 billion
Salvation Army needs money and toys By Devin Wilger Staff Writer The Yorkton Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign has reached $43,494 so far. The goal for 2017 was to raise $135,000 for the Christmas campaign, says Lieutenant Samuel Tim of the Yorkton Salvation Army. They moving a bit slower than they would like, he admits. “We are a bit behind, we could use a bit of help.” They are also still in need of toys. Tim says that the most pressing need for toys is in the most difficult age bracket, age 11-14. “That’s always a tough one.” Toys are accepted at any time, but to help put something under the tree this Christmas they need toys by December 15. If any toys are not used this Christmas, they will be kept for next year.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Despicable Me 3” (PG) — After Gru (Steve Carrell) and wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) are sacked from the Anti-Villain League for failing to thwart a former child actor-turned-villain, the aptly named Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), the adoring minions hope for a return to villainy. Unfortunately for them, the family instead packs it up to visit a newfound relative — long-lost twin brother Dru (also voiced

It’s surprisingly suspenseful and funny and disturbing, and it’s the absolutely deadblack Christmas murder comedy you didn’t know you wanted this year. “Crash Pad” (R) — Attractive mature woman Morgan (Christina Applegate) cheats on her neglectful husband (Thomas Hayden Church) with a younger, gingerhaired romantic named Stensland (Domnhall Gleeson). Instead of being the fulfillment of her dreams, it turns out he’s a simply a tool in a revenge plot against her hubby. But when the Mister finds out, he confronts the younger man, and then abruptly decides to turn the tables on Morgan by moving in with Stensland and reliving his glory days. The pair of opposites’ escapades make up the bulk of this under-the-radar bromedy. Gleeson remains incredibly adorable throughout, and Church’s alpha-dog antics are giggle-worthy indeed.

cial. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) It’s fine to appreciate the importance of “proper form” for doing things. But relax a bit in order to allow newcomers on the project to feel less intimidated by you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Use your boundless reserve of optimism to persuade others to work with you to resolve a difficult workplace problem before it can ruin your holiday fun. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You brim over with self-confidence as you begin to tackle a new challenge. And, before you know it, you’re not alone: Others have taken the plunge with you. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a highly defined sense of commitment to others. You would make a fine social worker.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and after one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for
a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise. It turns out that it doesn’t take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I’ve never gone without just to pay for “Racquel’s” vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your readers not to skip this important annual appointment. — Donna in Sioux Falls, South Dakota DEAR DONNA: You
told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they’re not vaccinated. To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. These are usually held on specific dates and places — pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinary clinics. However, these clinics often don’t advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search
a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which often sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers often know about pet health clinics nearby. These clinics offer required vaccinations and licenses, and sometimes have microchipping and a basic health exam available at a low fixed price per pet. “American Assassin” (R) — Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) is a man with a revenge mission. His parents were killed, his fiancee was murdered by terrorists and he’s uniquely suited to dish out a boatload of payback. Or so he thought until he gets lured into a CIA black-ops training program under the tutelage of master spy mentor Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). Hurley sharpens the knife that is Rapp into a scalpel, seriously suited to dish out a boatload of payback. When terrorist arms dealer Ghost — formerly trained by Hurley — steps into the picture, Rapp and Hurley combine to investigate and, you know, dish out a boatload of payback. This movie is like three-quarters stuffed with fights, killing and mayhem — and I’m all right with that. The film is potentially the first of many, as it’s based on a novel series by Vince Flynn. Sanaa Lathan also stars.

How do you mash your potatoes? Little did I realize until I casually asked around that there are as many techniques and addins as there are families that love eating them. Satisfying and delicious, mashed potatoes are one of the first dishes my kids learned to prepare. While my 10-year-old son took on the peeling and slicing, my 8-yearold daughter engaged her muscles 25 minutes later, mashing the tender chunks.
Whether you rice ‘em, mash ‘em or cream ‘em with an electric mixer, let’s face it — they do take time to prepare from scratch. That’s where this make-ahead recipe fits my schedule, especially during this busy holiday season. Prep this large batch a day or two in advance, getting your kids in the “mash,” and relax knowing they’ll be ready to pop in the oven to serve when you need them. MAKE-AHEAD MASHED POTATOES (Makes 10-12 servings) •5 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes •1 tablespoon salt •1/4 cup melted butter •1 8-ounce package cream cheese, room tem-
By Cindy Elavsky Q: I’ve really gotten into Sarah Jessica Parker’s comedy on HBO called “Divorce.” Can you tell me if it will be back for another season? — Barb T., via email A: The 10-episode second season of “Divorce” premieres Jan. 14 at 10 p.m. ET. If you’re not familiar with the series, “Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church star in this biting comedy series from creator Sharon Horgan about the lows and lower lows of a very long divorce,” as per HBO. Joining the cast this season are Steven Pasquale as a love interest for Sarah’s Frances, and “Ugly Betty” star Becki Newton is coming aboard as Jackie, a successful realtor who will be a new squeeze for Thomas’ Robert. Q: For years I’ve been hearing that there is going to be a sequel to “The Incredibles,” but it’s been so long, it feels like it might not be happening. Can you give me any info about that? — Katie S., via email A: It’s been 13 years since “The Incredibles” captured the hearts of so many adults and children alike, and it’s about to make its mark on a new generation. The computeranimated Pixar superhero film — which starred the voices of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter and Samuel L. Jackson — will be back with a follow-up, appropriately titled “Incredibles 2,” which is due to hit the-
Sarah Jessica Parker aters June 15. Craig, Holly, Samuel, et al., are reprising their roles and, according to Pixar, the sequel picks up right where the first one left off, with the Parr family about to face off with The Underminer (voiced by Pixar favorite John Ratzenberger). “Incredibles 2” will focus on Helen Parr (Holly), also known as Elastigirl, while her husband Bob (Craig) remains at home to watch their children, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack. The family struggles to maintain normal lives while they remain unaware of Jack-Jack’s powers. However, they, along with Frozone (Samuel), soon will have to battle a new villain with a sinister plot. Q: Can you tell me when the Golden Globes will air? I feel like it’s coming up soon. — Marc J., via Facebook A: The “75th Annual Golden Globe Awards” is set to air live coast to coast on Sunday, Jan. 7, from 8-11 p.m. ET (5-8 p.m. PT) on NBC. Late-night host/ comedian Seth Meyers will be the emcee of the annual gala, which has always been known as the more “fun” awards show,
Now it’s time to mash them while they are hot, using your favorite family method. If you use a ricer, work together with your child to rice the potatoes into a large bowl. If you prefer a traditional hand

potato masher, pour the potatoes in the bowl and mash. Or, use an electric mixer. With all methods, add butter as you go. Next, stir in cream cheese, sour cream, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir well until
To prepare the potatoes: Quarter or halve the potatoes, so that chunks are equal in size. This is a good job for your preteen. Place in a large pot with enough cold water to cover by 1 inch. Add 1 tablespoon salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce to medium and cook for about 20-25 minutes until tender when pierced with a fork. Drain potatoes well in a colander. where almost anything can happen, with many viewing it as an indicator of who will be honored at the Academy Awards. Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement: “We are thrilled that Seth Meyers is going to be hosting the Golden Globes this year. As he does every night for us in late night, he will be taking a closer look at this year’s best movies and television with his unique brand of wit, intelligence and mischievous humor.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.
smooth. Taste the mixture, adding more seasoning, if you wish. Sometimes we add a few shakes of Lowry’s seasoning. To store: Pour the mixture into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish, smoothing the top. Cool, cover and put into the refrigerator for up to three days. To bake: Heat oven to 350 F. Remove potatoes from refrigerator. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Add garnishes and serve. Cook’s Note: To enhance with garlic flavor, peel and halve 2 garlic cloves. Cook and mash with potatoes. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. HOLLYWOOD — Leonardo DiCaprio is spending more time as a producer than as an actor. He is involved in producing no less than 33 films, executive producing seven and acting in at least four. Mark L. Smith, who wrote “The Revenant,” for which Leonardo won an Oscar, has written “Conquest,” which Leonardo has in preproduction. He’s also preparing to play Theodore Roosevelt in “Roosevelt,” take on the Sicilian Mafia in “The Black Hand” and star in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” He’s just completed producing “Robin Hood,” with Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx and Jamie Dornan, as well as the mini-series “Frontiersmen,” about Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Lewis and Clark, and Andrew Jackson, no doubt inspired by “The Revenant.” Nicole Kidman celebrated her Emmy win for HBO’s “Big Little Lies” by lining up films for 2018. First up is “The Upside,” with Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart, opening March 9; followed by “Boy Erased,” with Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges,
Cranberry Pan Sauce Over Chicken Breasts Tasty cranberry and balsamic-vinegar pan sauce is a great way to liven up ordinary chicken breasts and Brussels sprouts. •1 container (10 ounces) Brussels sprouts •1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon olive oil •1 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •2 tablespoons all-purpose flour •4 medium skinless, boneless chicken-breast halves (about 1-1/4 pounds) •2 cups cranberries •1/4 cup sugar •1/4 cup balsamic vinegar Heat oven to 450 F. Trim Brussels sprouts; cut lengthwise into thin slices. In 15-1/2 by 10-1/2inch jelly-roll pan, toss sprouts with 1 tablespoon oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper to coat. Spread evenly in pan; roast 15 to 20 minutes or until tender and browned at edges. Meanwhile, in nonstick 12-inch skillet, heat remaining oil over medium-high heat until hot. On waxed paper, combine flour and remaining salt and pepper; use to coat chicken. Add chicken to skillet and cook 6 minutes. Reduce heat to medium; turn chicken over and cook 6 to 8 minutes longer or until juices run clean when thickest part of breast is pierced with tip of knife. Transfer chicken to platter; keep warm. To skillet, add cranberries, sugar, vinegar and 3/4 cup water; heat to boiling over medium-high heat. Cook until sauce thickens
Leonardo DiCaprio arriving Sept. 28; and “Aquaman,” with Jason Momoa in the title role, due Dec. 21, 2018. Kidman is currently starring in the BBC series “Top of the Lake,” which is airing on The Sundance Channel in the U.S. Meanwhile, her “Big Little Lies” co-star Reese Witherspoon is coproducing a new series for Apple TV with Jennifer Aniston. Jenna Elfman, who became a TV star in 119 episodes of “Dharma & Gregg” (1997-2002), has had less success with her series that followed: “Accidentally On Purpose” (18 episodes on CBS, 20092010), “1600 Penn” (13 episodes on NBC, 2012-2013) and “Imaginary Mary,” (nine episodes on ABC, 2017). She’ll now be a regu-
lar on “The Walking Dead” in its upcoming sixth season. Sorry to report we lost “Magnum, P.I.’s” Higgins, John Hillerman, Nov. 9. I visited Tom Selleck several times on location in Hawaii, I was lucky to spend time with Hillerman as well. He was as funny and delightful as he was as Higgins. He received four Emmy nominations for “Magnum” (1980-88), and finally won in 1987. When his health declined, Hillerman decided to retire in 1999 and move back to his native Texas. Among his 24 films was 1972’s “What’s up Doc?” and two for Mel Brooks: “Blazing Saddles” (1974) and “The History of the World, Part 1” (1984). He was an original. Get ready for another senior-citizen comedy. This one, “Just Getting Started,” stars Oscarwinners Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones as golfing rivals at a Palm Springs senior resort who must put aside their differences to fend off a mob hit. Rene Russo, Jane Seymour, George Wallace, Joe Pantoliano, Glenne Hedly, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Elizabeth Ashley are along for laughs. It hits screens Dec. 8. It’s not how you start, though, it’s how you finish!

ROASTED SOYBEANS Soak whole soybeans at least 8 hours, then rinse, then drain well. To roast, spread in a single layer on a cookie sheet, 2 cups (don’t overlap, if you want a consistency of crispness) of the beans. Bake at 350° F, stirring after 15 minutes, and then every 5 minutes until golden brown and crunchy. It took 35 minutes, to get to where we liked it. Then flavor with what you like — salt, onion salt, garlic salt, dry spices, etc. These make a good change from chips, and other snack food — and it is also nutritious. Dare you to stop with one handful!!!!! Joyce Paul Yorkton, SK.

have a wire suspended across a shallow wooden bowl with water in the bottom. A cross wrapped in a sprig of basil is suspended from the wire, and the water keeps the basil fresh. Every day during the holiday season, a family member dips the cross and basil into some holy water and sprinkles each room of the house. In addition to the religious significance, this ritual is said to keep away the kallikantzeri, mischievous goblins that appear during the 12 days of Christmas. I also bought a fruit tray, which I just put out in the morning. The kids ate a proper breakfast, and I still had the kitchen to myself to start preparations. It worked great!” — Sharon L. in Florida Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Freshly baked cookies are a wonderful holiday gift. Hosting family and friends for a cookie exchange party is a great way to start a new holiday tradition and get a variety of baked goods and some new recipes without spending much money. A cookie exchange party also is an inexpensive way to entertain because the cookies provided by your guests are the centerpiece of the party, and everyone leaves with a variety of cookies as a parting gift. You also can host a cookie bake and exchange party. Since everyone is so busy, buying good quality cookie mixes and having the guests stir them up, bake and decorate them can become a party activity. The first cookie exchange party started more than 70 years ago. It was usually a social event for women and was extremely popular with women’s clubs and church groups. Each person baked one or two dozen of their favorite cookies and exchanged one with each person in attendance. The party also offered a wonderful way to collect the personal stories behind
the cookies. Sharing stories also acts as an icebreaker and a way for guests to get to know each other. Here are a few tips for hosting a cookie party exchange, plus a great recipe for my mother’s Peanut Butter Cookies. • Invite eight to 12 people for the best variety of cookies and conversation. Traditionally, everyone attending brings a dozen of one kind of cookie, squares or candies for each of the other people in attendance, plus one dozen for themselves and an extra dozen for the “sample plate.” Since this would require a huge amount of baking, I suggest that each person bring three dozen cookies: two dozen to exchange and a dozen for sample plate. Although each guest might not get one of each cookie to take home, this makes the event more of a real party, as your guests won’t feel pressured to turn their kitchens into a bakery. Suggest that they wrap each dozen they are bringing separately. • Send invitations by
email or regular mail a few weeks ahead of the party. Specify a start and end time for your party. Send email reminders a week ahead of time. Remind guests to bring a large container so that they can take their cookie assortment home. • Avoid duplication of cookies/recipes by asking guests to RSVP and tell you about the cookies that they will bring. You might want to suggest selecting a recipe that has a special family meaning or one that is traditional to their background. This is a great way to learn about the traditions and recipes of other cultures and ethnic groups. • Ask each guest to bring a copy of their recipe to pass around with a little information about the origin or memory associated with the cookie. Having a list of the ingredients also ensures that people with food allergies can protect their health. • If the cookies or candies have been frozen, label them “Previously Frozen.” • Set a beautiful table
and arrange all the cookies as the guests arrive. • Create separate sample cookie and exchange cookie areas -- either ends of a table or on separate small tables. Keep each recipe on its own plate. • Design the table or areas in a layout that provides easy access to the treats from all sides. • Eating sweets induces thirst! Have self-serve pitchers of ice and sparkling water on hand along with warm and cool drinks, cups, plates and napkins. This is a gathering where you can make your own rules and traditions, like baking these Easy Four-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies every year. Relax, and don’t forget to enjoy your own party! EASY FOURINGREDIENT PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES •1 cup sugar, plus 3 tablespoons for sprinkling •1 cup peanut butter •1 egg •1 teaspoon vanilla extract Heat oven to 350 F, and line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, stir all four ingredients together until smooth. Using a tablespoon measure, scoop out 2 tablespoons of cookie dough and roll into a smooth ball. Place pre-rolled cookies on your cookie sheet about 1-inch apart. Press down with the back of a fork and then press again from the opposite direc-
