DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know if you have ever heard of a person being allergic to psyllium fiber? My doctor suggested I take Metamucil for constipation, as opposed to stool softeners. However, when I took it, my face and eyes began to itch, I began to wheeze and I coughed until I vomited
it up. My doctor stated he had never heard of anyone being allergic to it. As a side note, my husband has used Metamucil for years, and I have had a couple of episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath that could be attributed to inhaling some of the powder when he mixed it. — P.G. ANSWER: I haven’t seen any cases either, but it can happen, rarely — most often to people who have allergies to grasses or dust. It is possible that inhaling some of the powder started the allergy. I would be careful to stay away from the area where your husband is mixing his, as allergies sometimes
worsen over time. Unfortunately, you will have to find another source for fiber. Good dietary sources include wheat bran, prunes and prune juice. If you need a supplement, you may try methylcellulose (such as Citrucel), wheat dextrin (like Benefiber), and calcium polycarbophil (Fibercon). Be sure to get enough fluid, and start with a low dose and then slowly increase. The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money
order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 86 years old and in generally good health. He has been falling for no apparent reason for the past three years. He has had MRIs and X-rays, been to neurologists and ENTs — no one has an explanation. He has walkers and an electric wheelchair, but there are times when he has to stand and/or walk a little. My parents’ apartment looks like a war zone. Almost all of the furniture has been broken, not to mention the cuts and bruises on my dad.
Is there anything you can think of that might cause this? — J.G.
There are two ways to find out. You either can have the vitamin D level checked by a doctor, and use vitamin D if it is low; or, you can try a daily dose of vitamin D for a month or so and see if it helps. Most authorities
recommend 400-800 IU daily. Personally, I have found that 1,000-2,000 IU often is needed. This dose is unlikely to do harm if taken for only a month trial, and may be necessary for those whose levels are deficient and have symptoms. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
Hayley will be going on the road this spring
in the Strong, Sweet and Southern Tour. She has
been building up her country/pop music career and is excited to get out and perform for her fans. Says Hayley: “I couldn’t be more excited to get a chance to meet everyone and share music that has been deeply inspired by this wild last year of my life. I’m looking forward to meeting and personally thanking the fans who have followed my musical journey from the beginning, and those who have found me through ‘The Goldbergs.’” Go to hayleyorrantia.com to see if she’ll be performing near you. Q: My mom heard they were making a movie about Jody Arias and the murder mystery surrounding the death of her exboyfriend. Is this true, and if so, what can you tell us about it? — Gilda F., Land
O’ Lakes, Florida A: “Investigation Discovery” will air a three-part limited series surrounding the events, beginning Sunday, Jan. 14, at 10/9c as part of its American Murder Mystery franchise. For those unfamiliar with the horrific case, on June 4, 2008, friends found 30-year-old Travis Alexander dead in the shower of his Mesa, Arizona, home. He was stabbed more than 20 times, his throat was slit and he was shot in the head. Alexander’s family and friends were stunned, and phone calls flooded the police station with tips and information about the case. Alexander’s family and friends point to one key person of interest: Jodi Arias. Q: Can you tell me when “Victoria” will return to
PBS? I am hooked on that show! — Allan T., via email A: The critically acclaimed period drama that revolves around the young queen of England will return for its second season on Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Jenna Coleman returns as Victoria, as does Tom Hughes as Prince Albert and Rufus Sewell as the prime minister. Joining the cast is legendary actress Dame Diana Rigg (“Game of Thrones,” “The Avengers”), who plays the Duchess of Buccleuch, the court’s new Mistress of the Robes. She’s a fount of oldfashioned good sense for the queen, who is now in the throes of motherhood. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.
By Cindy Elavsky Q: I really like the girl who plays the sister on “The Goldbergs” and think she has a wonderful voice. Will she try to pursue a career in singing as well as acting? — Denise W., via email A: Hayley Orrantia, who plays Erica Goldberg on the hilarious family comedy that centers on the trials and tribulations of growing up in the 1980s, began singing as a child and recorded her own songs at the age of 14. In 2011, she was a contestant on the first season of “The X-Factor” and was eliminated in week five. When she was cast as Erica in “The Goldbergs” in 2013, creator/writer Adam F. Goldberg heard about her singing talent, and he incorporated that into her character.
ANSWER: If multiple doctors haven’t helped with the benefit of a complete history, exam and labs, I’m not likely to. However, vitamin D supplements have been shown to improve strength and reduce falls in the large number of people who have low levels.

Scouts to host Star Wars Gala in May Attention all wookiees, stormtroopers and, jedi: Mark May 4 on your calendars to attend a Star Wars Gala in Yorkton. The Friends of Jamborees, an umbrella fundraising group of the Yorkton Scouts is having a Star Wars Gala on May 4th, 2018, at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cultural Center in the city.
“It is an opportunity for the inner jedi to come to life for every Star Wars fan,” said project chair Kent Latimer. “We encourage all Star Wars fans to come dressed up as their favourite Star Wars character.” The evening will consist of Star Wars music, trivia contests, costume contests, live action light sabre battles, and more,

The Yorkton Scouts sent 20 scouts and leaders to the National Jamboree in Halifax in 2017. Latimer, also a scout leader, commented that the jamboree had 5000 scouts from 21 coun-

The opportunities to have photos with your favourite characters will be endless, added Latimer, adding it will be a family evening for all ages. The supper is a fundraiser for the Yorkton Scouts who

Canola accessing the EU biodiesel market Recently the European Commission published an implementing decision that will allow Canadian canola continued access to the EU biodiesel market. The decision affirms the greenhouse gas emission reductions achieved when Canadian canola is used to make biodiesel according to a detailed life cycle methodology that reflects the entire canola growing process. “This decision means
continued access to an important market for Canadian canola,” says Jim Everson, president of the Canola Council of Canada (CCC). “The Canola Council has worked hard on this over the past two years and this confirmation is very good for the entire value chain.” The European Commission’s decision details the greenhouse
gas emission intensity of Canadian canola production, a requirement for access to the EU biodiesel market. As of January 2018 all EU biodiesel must demonstrate greenhouse gas emission reductions that are greater than 50 per cent compared to fossil diesel, a requirement that must also be met for canola biodiesel in the U.S. According to the values published by the EU
Commission, biodiesel produced from Canadian canola will meet this requirement, resulting in emission reductions of more than 50% versus fossil diesel. “This decision shows the environmental benefits of using canola for biodiesel,” says Everson. “The EU is far ahead of North America in using renewable fuels which creates a good export opportunity for us.”
To arrive at its decision, the Commission considered a report on the lifecycle emissions of Canadian canola that was submitted by the Government of Canada. It outlined emissions from all stages of canola production including fertilizer, field emissions and fuel used by farm equipment. It calculated how these emissions change based on specific geographical differences such as mois-
ture levels and soil types. Over the last two years this involved close cooperation between the CCC and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Over the last three years, average annual exports of seed, oil and meal to the EU have totaled approximately $200 million. In 2016, 597,000 tonnes of canola seed and 37,000 tonnes of canola oil were shipped to the EU.
SaskEnergy sets another record Daily natural gas consumption in the province has set another new record of 1.50 PetaJoules (PJ) of natural gas. This record, set in the 24-hour period between 9:00 a.m. December 29th and 9:00 a.m. December 30th,
breaks the previous record set on December 26th, 2017. These records surpass the 1.33 PJ record from the winter of 2016/2017. The 1.50 PJ natural gas consumption record is due to the extreme cold temperatures, along with high
natural gas consumption from customers, especially industrial customers and power plants. A PetaJoule is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million GigaJoules (GJ) of natural gas – the average home in Saskatchewan consumes
about 102 GJ of natural gas annually. Record-setting natural gas usage days are happening more frequently with higher customer volumes. SaskEnergy’s system is designed around this increased growth, ensur-
911 tips for the new year If you unwrapped a new smart phone recently on Christmas Day, Sask911 reminds you to do your part to protect the integrity of the 911 system by making sure you understand how your high-tech gift accesses emergency services. “Smart phones are great tools that make our lives easier, but they also have functions that need to be used properly,” Saskatchewan’s Emergency Management and Fire Safety Commissioner Duane McKay said. “Everyone can do their part to ensure 911 operators and emergency service dispatchers are available to serve those in need.” For example, iPhones

with newer operating systems can have their lock button clicked five times to have the option to swipe SOS. After swiping SOS, the smart phone dials 911. However, this function does not ping your location to Sask911. “Sask911 has received some calls from people testing the feature, which ties up valuable resources,” McKay said. “We want to be proactive and remind people to please call 911 only when there’s a real emergency. If you do accidently dial 911 for whatever reason, please stay on the line so staff can
verify quickly that there isn’t a real emergency.” Smart phone users should also ensure their phones are locked when carrying them in a purse, pocket or bag to prevent accidental 911 calls. From January to November of this year, Sask911 operators took 330,281 calls. Of those, 58 per cent or 190,296 were from a cell phone, and 12 per cent or 40,046 were abandoned – meaning a caller hung up after dialing. Other tips to help prevent accidental 911 calls: Manually dialing 911
instead of preprogramming the number in your phone; and Teaching your children the importance of 911 and when it should and should not be used. General 911 tips: When calling, say where you are and identify which emergency services you require, such as police, fire or ambulance. Try to remain calm and be able to provide additional information, if requested by an operator. Don’t hang up until an operator advises you to do so.
ing additional capacity so that even on peak record days, the system is able to provide more natural gas than required. SaskEnergy employees work throughout the year to inspect, maintain and upgrade the province’s
natural gas system so that it can operate safely and efficiently regardless of the weather conditions. The system is continuously monitored to manage peak demands such as the winter weather conditions Saskatchewan has been experiencing.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “American Made” (R) — Tom Cruise is back behind the controls of a plane as Barry Seal, TWA pilot turned CIA mapmaker turned drug runner. It’s no surprise that Cruise shines in the role of characters that are larger than life, and his pure energy and charisma are on full display. Domhnall Gleeson plays CIA agent Monty, who approaches Seal, then a low-level pilot, to
It’s a wild and dangerous ride, but somehow it all just seems crazy and harmless in the light of that megawatt smile. “Battle of the Sexes” (PG-13) — It’s 1973. Social upheaval and the sexual revolution brought us a combination for the ages: colorful male chauvinist and former men’s champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carrell) Emma Stone, Steve Carrell in versus the then No. 1 “Battle of the Sexes” women’s player Billie Jean King (Emma conduct a little extracurricular surveillance “for Stone). The match was his country.” Seal’s drug billed as the Battle of the contacts take advantage Sexes, and this movie was by using him to mule ever well-done start to finish. more drugs, then guns, etc. It would be easy to make
a comedy in this framework, but with both players struggling with personal issues off court (Riggs’ gambling addiction and King’s sexual preference), director Simon Beaufoy brings out the humanity point for point. “Rebel in the Rye” (PG13) — Based on the book “J.D. Salinger: A Life,” director Danny Strong tells the story of the writer behind an American masterpiece: “Catcher in the Rye,” starring Nicholas Hoult as Salinger in a strong performance. Victor Garber plays Salinger’s unsupportive father, and Zoey Deutch portrays Oona O’Neill, Salinger’s college love interest.
Kevin Spacey commands as Salinger’s mentor, famed editor/publisher and Columbia University teacher Whit Burnett, credited with inordinate influence on the young writer. A man who told stories but who had no love for film chronicled in a feature film? The result is surprisingly watchable. “Love Beats Rhymes” (PG-13) — Azaleia stars in the RZA-directed story of Coco, a young rapper on the verge of finding her voice. With her group going nowhere, Coco enrolls in a college poetry class. Jill Scott plays her college professor, who both walls up the worlds between poetry and rap music while chal-
lenging Coco to find her voice and dig deeper into her own expression. There is a nicely developing love story between Coco and TA Derek (Lucien Laviscount). ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be hurt by a colleague’s harsh criticism. But don’t let it shake your confidence in what you’re trying to do. A more positive aspect starts to appear by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re torn between your sensible self and the part of you that enjoys acquiring lovely things. Best advice: Wait
‘twixt friends or family members. Best bet: Ask the questions that go to the heart of the matter, then get them all together for a group hug. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you love being the center of attention, your big Lion’s heart impels you to share the spotlight with a colleague who helped you with that well-praised project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your eagerness to act on a challenge is wisely tempered early in the week by a lack of necessary information. Things begin to clear up during the weekend. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A relationship you’d hoped would keep
going seems to be going nowhere. Close it out and move on to a brighter romantic aspect just beginning to manifest itself. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things don’t go completely as planned this week. But enjoy the surprises, even if you have to adjust your schedule. Some of them could be quite delightful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Making choices is usually easy for straight-shooting Archers. But a new development could deflect your aim. Try to put off decisions until you know more. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) While part of you might prefer taking a more familiar path, let your more daring and — admit it — super-curious self see what the unexplored has
to offer. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Those nasty types have slithered back under the rocks and present no more problems. Now’s the time to move ahead on that promising new relationship. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new offer
could clear up that lingering money problem. Also, a more confident attitude on your part might well help get that personal situation back on track. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of turning chaos into order. You’re also generous with your help for those who seek it.
for an end-of-month sale, and then buy something wonderful. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your artistic side has practical applications this week, such as redecorating your home or redesigning your personal stationery. Whatever you do, someone special will like it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You could be drawn into a problem

Gifts, meals, activities, memories. It’s that time of the new year to share a big “thanks to those who made the December holidays special for our families and kids. By doing so, we model to the youngest generation the habit of expressing appreciation to others. Hopefully they’ll grow into the “saying thanks habit without our prodding. According to Amy Jaworsky, editor for the
Hearst Corporation and mom of two school-age girls, 13 and 8: “Acknowledging someone’s generosity is a reminder to ourselves of all we have to be grateful for. The more we real-
ize how lucky we are, the more apt we are to want to deserve it by being better people. Good words for all, not just for kids. Teaching her daughters to express thanks to others
As a student at Harvard University, a young Theodore Roosevelt championed “the vigorous life, and the burgeoning sport
of American football was something he clearly supported. When he became president, the game often figured in his landmark speeches. “In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: hit the line hard; don’t foul and don’t shirk, but hit the line hard! His mood changed
a few years later, however, when his young son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. enrolled at Harvard and joined the football team. The annual Harvard-Yale game had become the nation’s top sporting event by this time, and football had become far more violent than the “masculine game Roosevelt knew
to 5 minutes longer or until tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in basil and cook until wilted. From lime, squeeze 1 tablespoon juice into mixture. Meanwhile, in large bowl, combine spinach and pinch salt. Cover with vented plastic wrap; microwave on High 3 minutes or until wilted. Spoon next to salmon, along with rice and pepper mixture. Serve with lime wedges. Serves 4.
Meanwhile, in a food processor or blender, combine mint leaves, peas, Parmesan and salt; pulse until finely chopped. With motor running, pour in oil and water in a slow, steady stream until mixture is pureed and pesto is thick. Drain pasta, reserving 1/2 cup cooking water. Return pasta to pot; add pesto and shredded chicken. Pour reserved pasta cooking water into the empty food processor or blender and swirl to loosen any remaining pesto; add to pasta mixture and toss to combine. Transfer pasta to a serving bowl and sprinkle with toasted pine nuts and more Parmesan cheese, if you like. Makes 5 servings. SALMON WITH PEPPERS There’s no excuse to order takeout when you can throw together this tasty, healthy dinner for four in the time it takes to wait for the deliveryman. •1 cup quick-cooking brown rice •1-1/2 teaspoon canola oil •4 skinless center-cut salmon fillets •2 limes •3 small peppers (red, orange and yellow) •1 medium onion •1/2 cup packed fresh basil leaves •6 ounces baby spinach Prepare rice as label directs. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat 1/2 teaspoon oil on medium 1 minute. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper on salmon. Add to skillet; cook 8 to 10 minutes or until opaque throughout, turning once. Transfer to serving plates. Grate peel of whole lime over fish. While salmon cooks, slice peppers very thinly. Finely chop onion. Drain fat from skillet. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in skillet on medium 1 minute. Add peppers, onion, 3 tablespoons water and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Cover; cook 5 minutes. Uncover; cook 3

started on a practical level when her oldest, Presley, turned 4. “I was standing in the background at giftopening time at her birthday party when the eager guests circled the birthday girl. It felt like a feeding frenzy, she says. “They closed in, and it moved fast. With all the excitement, Presley tore through the wrappings, so it was hard to get a complete list of who gave what. That’s when Amy came up with an idea the following year to ask gift-givers to stand with her daughter while she opened their present, so she could snap a photo of them as they posed with the gift. Through the years, she has seen how both the giver
and receiver feel special when they capture the moment together. When it comes time to say “thanks, she has no worries making sure the right card is with the right gift. “I have the evidence in my camera, she says. “I print out the photos and we mount them to simple cards with envelopes. As my daughters grow older, they can express a more detailed ‘thanks,’ she adds. Here are more saying “thank you ideas: —If your child received a holiday gift from someone who wasn’t present, take a photo of your child enjoying building with the new blocks, dressing a new doll or shooting a
puck with the new hockey stick. Print it, and mount it on a card with a personally written thank you. —Email or text a short video of your child saying “thanks and using the gift. —Encourage your children to draw a picture of the gift. If they aren’t writing yet, let them dictate as you write their “thanks. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day is airing on public television nationwide. from his time in college. This was the era of the “flying wedge. A Harvard alumnus and war historian noted that the game’s strategy closely mirrored military maneuvers. Even though he never played a down of football, he designed the flying wedge — a play that mimicked the tactics of Napoleon’s army by concentrating a large number of men and pointing them like an arrow at the weakest part of the opponent’s line. Harvard unveiled the play in 1892 against Yale, and people literally stood in awe when they saw the team take the formation. Shaped like a “V with the ball carrier nestled inside, fans watched as most of the Harvard players linked arms and moved forward,
completely obliterating the hapless Yale defender who stood in their way. The play helped spark interest in the game. Parke Davis, an early sports writer, commented that the play energized fans. “Sensation runs through the stands at the novel play, which is the most organized and beautiful one ever seen upon a football field. Pundits estimated that a flying wedge weighed more than a quarter-ton. Every resulting pileup from a play lent itself to anticipation: Was somebody crushed? The answer, sadly, was often yes. In 1905 alone, the “flying wedge play resulted in 22 deaths and an estimated 149 “serious injuries. Newspapers printed body counts and
took out full-page editorials calling for reform. Ever the hands-on president, Roosevelt called on the leading institutions to visit the White House. There, he used his “bully pulpit to spur the creation of what is today called the National Collegiate Association of Athletics (NCAA) — a body that began in the name of safety for college athletes. The flying wedge was outlawed as a result, but the play does exist today in a reduced form. Returning teams are allowed to form a “wedge for the kick returner, and defenders who take on the formation are called “wedge busters. Look for it next time you watch a game, and marvel as nobody dies. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Try a taste of the Mediterranean diet In recent years, heightened awareness with regard to the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet have led many people to try it. Many delicious dishes are included in a Mediterranean diet, and for many newcomers, this approach to eating suits their lifestyles and health goals. Offal might not be the first thing people think of when considering a Mediterranean diet, but it fits in with the Mediterranean way of cooking that uses every part of the animal.
HOLLYWOOD — Chris Hemsworth’s biggest moneymakers have been the six films in which he played Thor (2011-2017). Despite the golden touch of director Ron Howard, “In the Heart of the Sea” (2015) cost $100 million and grossed only $94 million. “The Huntsman: Winter War” (2016) cost $115 million and grossed $165 million (which wasn’t a break-even gross). With “Avengers: Infinity War” now completed and due May 4, and the untitled “Avengers” movie currently filming (for a May 2019 premiere), Hemsworth is filling in the gaps with “12 Strong,” with Michael Shannon and “Mom’s” William Fichtner, opening Jan. 19. PAN-FRIED KIDNEYS WITH BACON AND MUSTARD Serves 4 •3⁄4 ounce dried porcini •14 ounces lamb’s or calf’s kidneys •1-3⁄4 ounces smoked bacon •1 tablespoon chopped
Chris Hemsworth is “Bad Times at the El Royale,” set in a dilapidated part of the California Lake Tahoe region, with Jeff Bridges as a down-onhis-luck priest. Another star needing a big hit is Gerard Butler. While “London Has Fallen” (2016) grossed $206 million, “A Family Man” (2017), with Gretchen Mol,
Immerse the porcini in just enough hot water to cover them (too much water results in overcooking later) and set aside to soften. Halve the kidneys lengthwise, remove the thin membrane on the outside if necessary and cut out the white fatty core. Cut into 1⁄2-inch cubes and set aside. Dice the bacon or cut into strips. Chop the thyme and garlic and set aside.
Select a large skillet and heat up the oil and butter. When hot, add the kidneys, cooking one side until just brown, then turning to brown the other side. Season with salt and pepper and remove carefully with a slotted spoon, keeping the butter and oil in the pan. Add the bacon and cook briefly. Squeeze out the porcini, reserving the soaking liquid, and add to the pan along with the garlic and thyme. Cook, stirring frequently, until the bacon is just lightly browned. Return the kidneys to
the pan along with the reserved porcini liquid, discarding any sediment at the bottom of the bowl. Then add the brandy. Cook for a few minutes to reduce the liquid until it makes a thick sauce. Add the cream and mustard, bring to a boil, and when the sauce just coats the kidneys, remove from the heat. Taste to check the seasoning and serve immediately with a scattering of the parsley, either on thin crispy toast with a small warm brioche, or with boiled rice.
harming public morality. The director of the video also was fined and given two years in prison, but in true double-standard chauvinism, his sentence was in absentia. They’re both appealing the verdict in a higher court. Disney is buying the assets of 21st Century Fox for a mere $55 billion. That won’t include the famed 20th Century Fox lot, which still will be owned by Rupert Murdoch and has 80 permanent buildings (sound stages and offices) spread over 1.8 million square feet. Currently,
“Modern Family, “Fresh Off the Boat,” “The Orville,” “Speechless,” “The Mick” and Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story: The Versace Murder,” among others, film there. In 1956, Fox sold its vast back-lot acreage to cover losses when Elizabeth Taylor’s “Cleopatra” went millions of dollars over budget. The back lot was converted into The Century Plaza Hotel, Century City, with huge office buildings and a huge mall. Now that Disney owns ABC Television, Pixar, The
Marvel Universe, the “Star Wars” franchise and more, the only thing Disney has to worry about is 21st Century Fox gobbling up Mickey Mouse!

Those who want a truly Mediterranean experience can try their hands at the following recipe for “Pan-fried Kidneys with Bacon and Mustard” from Sophie Braimbridge’s “Stylish Mediterranean in Minutes” (Kyle Books). thyme or rosemary leaves •1 garlic clove •2 tablespoons butter •1 tablespoon olive oil •2 tablespoons brandy •4 tablespoons heavy cream •2 teaspoons good-quality whole grain mustard •Sea salt and freshly Alfred Molina, Allison Brie and Willem Dafoe, made $1.2 million overseas and nothing in the U.S., and “Geostorm” (2017) needed to make double its $120 million cost to turn a profit and only grossed $207 million. Butler will try to change that with the heist/action-thriller “Den of Thieves,” with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, out Jan. 19, and “Hunter Killer,” with Gary Oldman, Billy Bob Thornton, Willem Dafoe and Oscar-winning songwriter and actor Common, opening in 2018. How to cope with the winter blues (NC) — During colder months, many of us can suffer from what’s known as the winter blues. Symptoms can include crankiness, fatigue, low energy and anxiety, and are usually caused by the shorter days we experience in our winters. Feel healthier and happier so you can take advantage of what the winter wonderland has to offer with these three tips from the Canadian Health Food Association. Eat smart. The cold weather might make us want to reach for snacks and junk food, but these treats do little more than fill our stomachs with unnecessary calories and simple carbs. Instead, reach for smarter options, such as whole wheat breads or healthy fats like fatty fish or avocados. Rather than making you full and ready for a nap, these foods will give you a boost of energy for your snowy outdoor adventures. Enhance your ambiance. When we’re huddled inside away from the cold, it’s especially important to make sure our home is cozy and happy. There are many ways to achieve this, whether it’s redecorating, adding plants or using aromather-

apy, which has been shown to help with bad moods. In fact, diffusing a calming essential oil, such as lavender, may help improve mood and increase feelings of relaxation. Sleep well, not just more. According to a survey conducted by CHFA, 73 per cent of us say that lack of sleep has negative effects on our happiness. Improving sleep quality is just as important as getting enough hours each night. One way to do this is supplementing with melatonin, which can decrease the amount of time it takes to fall asleep while increasing the amount and quality of our rest. When shopping for natural health products, remember to look for the eightdigit Natural Product Number (NPN) on the label. This is your assurance that the product has been licensed by Health Canada and approved to be safe, effective and high-quality. For healthy tips and to find a CHFA Member health food store in your neighbourhood where you can find all these and more, visit chfa.ca.
Did you know? Millions of people resolve to get healthier by dieting and exercising more frequently at the start of each new year. According to data from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, 12 percent of new gym memberships are opened in January. The second week of January is one of the busiest times of year in the fitness industry. But many people who decide to exercise more at the dawn of a new year quickly lose that resolve. New Year’s resolutions to diet may wane as well. In 2013, a UK food company found that of those who diet regularly, two out of five
quit within the first seven days, one out of five last a month, and only 20 percent make it to the three-month mark. To make healthy resolutions last longer, people should recognize that results do not happen overnight and should not be discouraged by slow progress. In addition, diet and exercise is not a fast fix, but rather a lifestyle change. With consistent calorie control and exercise, people may see a gradual reduction in weight and other improvements to their overall health. Some may find it most effective to work with a nutritionist and a gym trainer.

Some of the long-term effects on the body of smoking cannabis are similar to the effects of smoking tobacco, and include increased risk of bronchitis, lung infections and chronic cough as well as increased mucus buildup in the throat. 4. Mental health. (NC) — With the upcoming changes to the legal status of cannabis in Canada being considered, many of us are wondering about the possible health effects and risks. While cannabis may make you feel relaxed and happy, you could also experience unpleasant, unwanted or negative effects on your brain and body. Here are some health facts to help you make an informed decision. 1. Short-term effects. Even occasional use of cannabis has been linked with confusion, fatigue, difficulty remembering and anxiety. The short-term effects on the body can include decreased blood pressure, which can cause people to faint; increased heart rate, which can be dangerous for people with heart conditions; and damaged blood vessels caused by inhalation of smoke. 2. There’s no disputing the power of food to provide consolation in times of stress, and a classic meatloaf is no exception. There are very few dishes that combine tradition and innovation the way that meatloaf does. My husband, Michael, loves meatloaf, and evidently, he’s not alone. Statistically, affluent baby boomers order the entree on a regular basis when dining out. Whether it’s made from ground beef combined with pork or veal, or a more modern version featuring ground
• The unknown soul who made the following sage observation must have been a keen observer of events: “A politician can appear to have his nose to the grindstone while straddling a fence and keeping both ears to the ground.” • In the 17th century, a Frenchman opened a coffee shop in London and sold chocolate, newly imported from the Americas, for 10 to 15 shillings a pound. That may not sound like much until you learn that at the time, the going price of a pound gold was 20 to 30 shillings. • Are you interested in pogonotrophy? If you’re
turkey or chicken, meatloaf is at the top of the list of comfort foods. It’s about time this humble dish got the recognition it deserves. It takes about 1-1/2 pounds of ground meat to make a meatloaf that serves six people. I’ve found that “marinating” the ground meat in a bowl with 1/4 cup of water, a tablespoon of mild to medium salsa, and a tablespoon each of Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce makes for a moister, more flavorful
a woman, the answer is probably no. The word, derived from the Greek word “pogon,” or “beard,” and the suffix “trophy,” or nourishment, refers to the growing of a beard. • Most people realize that many places in the United States were once known by different names. Here’s a sampling: the Potomac River was originally called Conococheague Creek, Camp David was named Shangri-La, and the USA itself was once known as the United States of Congress Assembled. • Good news for the not-so-neat among us:
meatloaf. I season my meatloaf with salt, pepper, minced bell pepper, garlic, onions and 1/2 of a shredded carrot, along with fresh herbs including parsley, thyme and basil or a tablespoon of dried Italian Seasoning. A cup of a starch or binder is the next component in a classic meatloaf. I use seasoned breadcrumbs or crushed crackers, and an egg. A gentle touch when combining the mixture ensures that the meatloaf will be well-seasoned without being tough. The final step in making a traditional meatloaf is adding the “gravy.” I combine ketchup with salt, pepper and medium salsa or barbecue sauce. I pour off any accumulated fat, and then slather the topping on the meatloaf halfway through the cooking process. Meatloaf isn’t a comMaking your bed could be bad for you. A study done in the United Kingdom at Kingston University showed that the linens of an unmade bed retain less moisture, therefore making them less attractive to dust mites. • Evidently it’s not just humans who associate a deeper voice with maturity (and desirability) in males. It seems that male owls try to appear more macho and attract females by lowering the tone of their hoots. Thought for the Day: “The cult of individual personalities is always, in my view, unjustified. To be sure, nature distributes her gifts variously among her children. But there are plenty of the wellendowed ones too, thank God, and I am firmly convinced that most of them live quiet, unregarded lives.” — Albert Einstein

plex dish, nor does it make a visually stunning presentation. As a friend of mine once said, “It’s a lot of meat in a loaf, and you don’t have to chew it very much — what’s not to like?” Meatloaf has provided a tasty way to stretch a dollar for generations of American families. In these uncertain economic times, we could all use a plate full of comfort. MINI-MEATLOAVES The great thing about this recipe from the Betty Crocker kitchens (www. bettycrocker.com/recipes) is that the mini meatloaves provide individual servings and are ready in just 30 minutes. This would make a great maincourse dish for children or a unique appetizer for a retro recipe party. •1/2 cup ketchup
•1/2 tablespoon packed brown sugar •1 pound lean (at least 80 percent) ground beef •1/2 pound ground pork •1/2 cup Original Bisquick mix •1/4 teaspoon pepper •1 small onion, finely chopped (1/4 cup) •1 egg Heat oven to 450 F. In small bowl, stir ketchup and brown sugar until mixed; reserve 1/4 cup for topping. In large bowl, stir remaining ingredients and remaining ketchup mixture until well-mixed. Spray 13-by-9-inch pan with cooking spray. Place meat mixture in pan; pat into 12-by-4-inch rectangle. Cut lengthwise down center and then crosswise into sixths to form 12 loaves. Separate loaves, using spatula, so no edges are touching. Brush loaves with reserved 1/4 cup
ketchup mixture. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until loaves are no longer pink in center and meat thermometer inserted in center of loaves reads 160 F. Serves 6. Substitution: While the mixture of ground beef and pork gives these little loaves a unique flavor, you can also use 1-1/2 pounds of ground beef instead of the mixture. Having a cat means making a few compromises in your life, particularly in the interiordecorating department. It means being more careful about setting expensive glassware on the countertop. It means a Christmas tree whose bottom third remains undecorated, or adorned with unbreakable, pet-safe ornaments. It means patiently retying
your shoelaces after your cat has pounced on them. It means buying a new sweater every fall, or keeping your favorite ones in a drawer to wear on special occasions only. The tradeoff, however, is that you have a companion for many happy years. A cat kneading his or her claws on your sweater while curled up in your lap is an expression of contentment, an acknowledgment that you’re family. You don’t have to give up all the breakable things that you love in order to live with your cat, you just need to make a few concessions to keep both your cat and your glassware safe. Send your pet care tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

this conundrum, I can honestly say most cats won’t respond to pleas, begging or even treats. Well, sometimes they’ll respond to treats. But they’ll go right back to doing what they enjoy most: destroying all that you love. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do cats do what they do? Why do they tear ornaments off the Christmas tree, knock glasses off the coffee table, attack our shoelaces and knead their claws into our sweater? Is there any way to get mine to stop doing, like, all of these things? Sign me — Frayed Sweater, and Nerves, in Toronto DEAR FRAYED: After years and years of studying
GRANDMA’S CHICKEN POT PIE For you weekend warrior cooks who like to have things made up ahead of time in the freezer, this recipe is a must have! •1 (10-3/4 ounce) can Healthy Request Cream of Chicken Soup •2 cups frozen mixed vegetables, thawed •1-1/2 cups diced
I’m being (slightly) sarcastic, of course.

In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, combine chicken soup, mixed vegetables and chicken. Cook over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes. Evenly spoon mixture into prepared baking dish. In a medium bowl, combine baking mix, egg
TIPS: 1) Thaw mixed vegetables by rinsing in a colander under hot water for one minute. 2) If you don’t have leftovers, purchase a chunk of cooked chicken breast from your local deli. • Each serving equals: 180 calories, 4g fat, 15g protein, 21g carbs, 418mg sodium, 55mg calcium, 1g fiber; Diabetic exchanges: 1-1/2 starch/carb, 1-1/2 meat; Carb Choices: 1-1/2.
Stuffy nose? You might not need an antibiotic (NC) — Busier schedules and more time spent indoors means winter is also unofficially cold and flu season. If a seasonal ailment has you or your kids down, it’s important to know what it is so you can get treatment and start to feel better. More than recognizing if you have a cold or flu, it’s essential to know if your illness is viral or bacterial because this will determine whether you need an antibiotic. Only bacterial, not viral, infections benefit from antibiotics. Taking an antibiotic when you don’t need one won’t help you get well; in fact, it could end up hurting in the long run. With antibiotic resistance, also known as antimicrobial resistance, on the rise and the World Health Organization calling the issue a “global health emergency,” it’s essential to know if an antibiotic will help before popping a pill. Your doctor is your best resource for determining whether an antibiotic or another medication is the remedy, but the information below is a

great primer before your appointment. Fever. A fever is a tricky symptom that can be present with a bacterial infection and also with a viral illness like the flu. The likelihood of it being a flu increases if one is going around in your community. Your best bet is to be proactive and get a flu shot at the beginning of the season. Sore throat. A sore throat is common in many sicknesses. It can happen with several other symptoms in a cold or flu, or it could be a throat infection, for which you can get a test to determine if you need an antibiotic. Chest symptoms. Many people think that anything more than the common cold is a bacterial infection, but even illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia can be viral or bac-
terial. Your doctor can help determine the culprit. If it’s viral, an antibiotic won’t help you, but your doctor may recommend an antiviral medication instead. Runny nose. A runny or stuffy nose is another tough symptom to decode. It can be due to a cold, but even one caused by a sinus infection may not need an antibiotic, as it too can be bacterial or viral. Lab testing. The best way to tell if you need an antibiotic is with a lab test of nasal or cough secretions or a throat swab. The lab test will determine if you’re sick because of bacteria, and if so, can help your doctor decide on the best antibiotic to prescribe. Find more information on antimicrobial resistance at amr.bd.com/en-ca.

However, the following techniques may be helpful. • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress. • Meditation: Mindful meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and tai chi are ways to focus the brain away from stressful situations. • Socialization: Talking and spending time with friends or family can relieve stress.
• Hobbies: Crafts, hobbies and other engaging activities can direct attention away from stress. • Talk therapy: Seeing a therapist may help some people work through stress and discover additional techniques to change how they respond to stress. • Situation changes: Changing a job, residence or a condition that removes a source of stress may be handy. Many people suffer from stress, which can be very harmful if not dealt with healthily and readily.

tially resulting in lack of motivation or focus, anxiety, sadness, and/or angry outbursts. Healthline links chronic stress to behaviors such as overeating, not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, and social withdrawal. Reducing stress is a priority for many people. Although it is not an easy undertaking, slowly removing stressors from one’s life and taking steps toward changing one’s responses to stressful situations can help. There are

from the vehicles around you. Keep a safe distance back from the car in front of you to cut down on extra water and snow directed at your car. Stay focused. If you can’t see what’s happening, you won’t be able to stop your car in time. Always be alert and stay cautious to what’s going on around you. Slow down. Your car’s ability to brake on wet or slushy roads is extremely
diminished. Same goes for accelerating – doing so too quickly can cause your wheels to spin, making it harder to keep control. Think safety first by travelling at a safe speed that allows you plenty of time to brake when needed. Get winter tires. The best time to install winter tires is before the first snow fall. Winter tires do more than just help you drive in snow – they provide better traction for
driving in wet, icy and slushy conditions. Better tire traction means more control, and less chance of an accident. Lights on. No matter the time of day, keep your lights on so you are visible to other vehicles. Despite the weather, remember that you are in control of your vehicle. However, sometimes car accidents happen even after you’ve made all the right moves to prevent one.

Start the year off on a Mediterranean foot Peppers play a significant role in the Mediterranean diet, providing nutrients such as vitamin C and potassium while also giving meals a fresh boost of flavor. Long touted for its health benefits, the Mediterranean diet has piqued the interest of men and women looking to get healthy. Those who want a meal
with a little Mediterranean flare can try the following recipe for “Mediterranean Beef Ragoût” from Judith Finlayson’s “The Healthy Slow Cooker (Second Edition)” (Robert Rose). Mediterranean Beef Ragoût Makes 8 servings •2 pounds trimmed stewing beef, cut into
1-inch cubes and patted dry
•2 tablespoons olive oil, divided •2 onions, chopped •4 cloves garlic, minced •2 tablespoons ground cumin (see note 2 below) •1 teaspoon dried thyme •1 teaspoon grated lemon zest (optional) •1⁄2 teaspoon salt •1⁄2 teaspoon cracked black peppercorns
A new take on “spaghetti” Spaghetti is a staple of many family dinner tables. But home cooks who want to veer away from traditional pasta without giving up their love of marinara can try the following, zucchini-inspired alternative to traditional spaghetti, “Z’paghetti Marinara with Shrimp,” courtesy of Lisa Lillien’s “Hungry Girl Clean & Hungry” (St. Martin’s Press). Z’paghetti Marinara with Shrimp Makes 2 servings •28 ounces (about 4 medium) zucchini •8 ounces (about 16) raw large shrimp, peeled, tails removed and deveined •1⁄4 teaspoon Italian seasoning •1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder •1⁄8 teaspoon black pepper •1 cup Clean & Hungry •Marinara Sauce (see below) •2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese Preheat the oven to 375 F. Lay a large piece of heavy-duty foil on a baking sheet and spray with nonstick spray. Using a spiral vegetable slicer, cut zucchini into spaghetti-like noodles. (If you don’t have a spiral veggie slicer, peel zucchini into super-thin strips, rotating the zucchini after each strip.) Roughly chop for shorter noodles. Place zucchini noodles in the center of the foil and top with shrimp. Sprinkle with seasonings. Top with marinara sauce and Parmesan. Cover with another
Did you know? Although full moons occur roughly every 29.5 days, blue moons are much more rare. According to Space.com, a blue moon happens on average once every 2.7 years. A blue moon has nothing to do with the color of this celestial orb, but rather it refers to when there are four full moons in a season of three months instead of three full moons. The fourth moon is referred to as the blue moon. Occasionally, two full moons appear during the same month. This will next happen in January 2018. January 1st featured the full Wolf moon. At the end of the month, on January 31, sky-gazers can view the second full moon, or the blue moon.
large piece of foil. Fold together and seal all four edges of the foil pieces, forming a well-sealed packet. Bake for 25 minutes, or until zucchini noodles have softened and shrimp are fully cooked. Cut packet to release hot steam before opening entirely. Transfer packet con-
tents to a large bowl, and toss to mix. Clean & Hungry Marinara Sauce Makes 6 servings •3 cups canned crushed tomatoes •1⁄4 cup tomato paste •1 tablespoon white wine vinegar •2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
•1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder •1⁄2 teaspoon onion powder •1⁄4 teaspoon salt •1⁄8 teaspoon black pepper Combine ingredients in a large sealable container. Mix until uniform. Seal, and refrigerate until ready to use.
•1 cup beef stock •1⁄2 cup dry red wine •1 - 14-ounce can nosalt-added diced tomatoes, including juice •2 bay leaves •2 roasted red bell peppers, thinly sliced, then cut into 1-inch pieces •1⁄2 cup sliced pitted green olives •1⁄2 cup finely chopped parsley leaves In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add beef, in batches, and cook, stirring, adding more oil as necessary, until browned, about 4 minutes per batch. Transfer to slow cooker stoneware as completed. Reduce heat to medium. Add onions and garlic to pan and cook, stirring, until onions are softened, about 3 minutes. Add cumin, thyme, lemon zest, if using, salt, and peppercorns and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add beef
stock, wine, tomatoes with juice, and bay leaves and bring to a boil. Add to slow cooker and stir well. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours, until mixture is bubbly and beef is tender. Stir in roasted peppers, olives and parsley. Cover and cook on high for 15 minutes, until peppers are heated through. Discard bay leaves. Note 1: This dish can be partially prepared before it is cooked. Heat oil and complete step 2. Refrigerate overnight for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to cook, complete steps 1 and 3. Note 2: For the best flavor, toast and ground cumin seeds yourself. Place seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Immediately transfer to a spice grinder or mortar and grind.

Ten reasons to quit smoking right now Quitting smoking can greatly improve smokers’ long-term health and can even begin paying dividends almost immediately. Smoking is a leading contributor to many diseases and harms nearly every organ of the body, advises the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says smoking causes more deaths each year than HIV, alcohol use, illegal drug use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm-related incidents each individually. Smoking not only accounts for 90 percent of all lung cancer-related deaths, but also it increases the risk for coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancers almost anywhere in the body. Nicotine is a toxic, colorless or yellow liquid that is the chief active constituent of tobacco. Because nicotine is addictive, people who want to quit smoking must recognize they will need to overcome their addictions en route to getting healthier. The good news is that, for people who smoke infrequently, most remnants of nicotine are gone within three to four days of quitting, says the Quit Smoking Community. It may take longer for nicotine to leave the bodies of heavy smokers or those who have been smoking for a long time. As nicotine levels decrease, the body will eventually recover from withdrawal symptoms and begin to feel better. The following are 10 reasons to quit smoking today.
• On Jan. 18, 1778, English explorer Captain James Cook becomes the first European to discover the Hawaiian Islands when he sails past the island of Oahu. Two days later, he landed at Waimea on the island of Kauai and named the island chain the Sandwich Islands, in honor of the earl of Sandwich. • On Jan. 21, 1855, John Moses Browning, sometimes called the “father of modern firearms,” is born in Ogden, Utah. When he was 24 years old, Browning received his first patent, for a rifle that Winchester manufactured as its Single Shot Model 1885. The rifle is still made today. • On Jan. 16, 1919, the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the sale of alcohol, is ratified and becomes the law. It failed to prevent the distribution of alcoholic beverages, however, and led to the rise of organized crime in America. • On Jan. 15, 1936, Edsel Ford, the son of auto industry pioneer Henry Ford, forms a philanthropic organization called the Ford Foundation with a donation of $25,000. The foundation was established in part as a legal way for the Ford family to avoid inheritance taxes.
1. Financial savings: The cost of a pack of cigarettes varies depending on where you live, but the cost savings of quitting can add up quickly. New York City and London have some of the most expensive cigarette prices in the world. In America the average price of cigarettes is $5.51, according to Fair Reporters, based on cigarette prices across the United States. Many states fall between $6 and $8 per pack. 2. Cleaner teeth: Smoking can stain teeth,
so quitting smoking can prevent future smokingrelated stains. 3. Greater lung capacity: Many people find their lung capacity improves by as much as 10 percent within nine months of quitting, according to the World Health Organization. Within one to nine months of quitting, coughing and shortness of breath decreases. 4. Better circulation: Blood flow improves when smokers quit smoking, which can mean fewer feelings of “pins and nee-
dles” in extremities and warmer hands and feet. 5. Improved fertility: Nonsmokers often find it easier to get pregnant because the lining of the womb is stronger and sperm is more potent, says NHS Choices, the United Kingdom’s largest health resource. Quitting also can reduce the chances of birth defects or miscarriage. 6. Blood oxygen improvement: Within 12 hours of quitting, blood oxygen levels return to normal and carbon monoxide lev-
els will drop to normal, offers the quitting helper QuitSmokingSupport.com. 7. Coughing decreases: Chronic cough due to tobacco smoke irritation, and damaged cilia in the lungs can abate over time, says the Mayo Clinic. The cilia can recover, regaining mobility, and mucus production begins to return to a normal level as well. 8. Better sense of smell and taste: The Cleveland Clinic says that smoking can damage the nerve endings in the body, including
those involved in taste and smell. People who quit may begin to taste flavors and experience aromas better than they did when they were still smoking. 9. Improved aroma: By quitting smoking, smokers will no longer have the odor of cigarette or cigar smoke clinging to their hair and clothing. That can make them smell more pleasant to themselves and others. 10. Longer life: Quitting significally improves smokers’ chances of living a long, healthy life.
